Host Chris Rock pined last night about the lack of racial diversity at the Grammys last night:
“...the white people’s choice awards.”
Give it a break already.

You mean the oscars, right?
I think they ought to give a 'Token black person award' every year, and even name it the 'token black person award'. If the motion picture academy didn't think anything put up by black people deserved an award, then isn't that equal in itself? Do we have to have special awards or committees to approve 'racial diversity'?

Oscars, but I have a question...
In today's America, where isn't there racism now? There's more hatred now than I can ever remember. It's sad that popular events are now being used by so called 'actors' to display their views, most negative.
Something needs to happen, immediately.

need to start handing out participation trophies at these things so no gets their feelings hurt.
It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great!

I'm offended that the NBA has very few (if any) white players in the dunk competition
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Overall I thought Chris Rock did a pretty good job in his opening making his point but making fun of it at the same time.
Then it became a part of every skit, every introduction, every everything... it got old.

Just wait for the overreaction next year.. there will be black people nominated for everything whether they deserve it or not.

I will argue they aren't getting the roles, and its much for the same reason that hollywood seems insistent on sequels and remakes. They know what brings the cash. Why take a risk going outside the box?

It's either that or token or participation awards.

The Grammy's are certainly racist. As are the Oscars. There have been a lot of great black actors that they've been snubbing for years. Michael B Jordan got snubbed two years ago for Fruitvale Station. Selma got snubbed for a best actor nom for the guy who played King. Also, besides Inaratu, there were zero hispanics as well. Again, if you've seen a lot of movies, you know how much of a farce the Oscars can be.

It's either that or token or participation awards. My point is Hollywood is the first guilty party in this problem. The Oscars are then second. and this part is just clicking... Oh and the grammies are more a bunch of old people voting just as much as a racism problem. I mean, things like Jethro Tull beating Metallica for best heavy metal album should tell you that.

I saw Chris Rock's opening monologue and thought he was really funny.
I watched a little bit of the show after that and got bored, not for me. I can read who won what the next day.
P.S. The stage set-up looked really nice too. Classy.

The person-on-the-street interviews that Chris Rock did in Compton were kind of telling.. Most of the black people he talked to had never even heard of, let alone seen, most of the movies nominated for awards yet they had all seen Straight Outta Compton... So if black people tend to go see movies with a black theme or cast, why is it racist for white people to prefer movies with a white theme or cast? So since the majority of movie goers are white, the majority of movies are made for that audience... so the majority of the better roles go to white people... It's not a big racist conspiracy, it's peoples natural tendencies meeting simple economics.

The billionaires who fund movies are no different than the billionaires that own NBA teams.. if they could have more success and make more money with all black casts and promoting black superstars, they would.

Yes, but the oscars have nothing to do with money, other than being rich artistic people handing out awards to other rich artistic people. It's not based on money, it's based on whatever credentials they put on artistry. It's little more than a 'feel good' show to aggrandize themselves. Besides, this crap about racism should have been put to bed when Hattie McDaniel won best supporting actress for Gone with the Wind.

So until Black people from Compton watch Trumbo then they're cool, but until then, you-know-what them you-know-who? Let's also not mention the fact that they were handpicked interviewees. They had the most ridiculous/funny answers. Not the most factual or insightful. Unfortunately, this applies to all of our "news" and not just The Oscars.
But anyway, I completely get what you're saying. And you're right in many aspects. There's simply not enough economics in black movies, with black casts and black themes. There's also a lack of economics in having a black superstar opposed to a white superstar. Until these things happen then movies and the Oscars will never really change.
Unfortunately, we can still do a lot of progress and we don't. Movies are still independent of each other. We can grade them subjectively on their artistic merits, not their racial demographics. BUt we don't. David Owelo played MLK a lot better than Eddie Redmayne played Stephen Hawkins and Oyelowo didn't even get nominated. It would be one thing if these snubs occurred infrequently, but every year there are multiple examples of this.

There are a lot great black actors who are not getting recognition. Have you ever seen Chiwetel Ejiofor? He's one of the most talented actors around. Seriously. Have you ever seen him do Hamlet? Your life will change. Michael B Jordan and Idris Elba are both extremely talented. Again, constant snubs. It's not as simple as them just not getting roles. When they do get roles, they're not recognized. It's a shame.

That's 37.5%... And those are just the winners, not even the nominees.... sounds more like they are in a drought the last couple years than some rampant racism...

I'd honestly compare it much more to Leo's Oscarless career. But instead of Leo competing against Forrest Whittaker and Daniel Day Lewis, he's competing against all of his other movies, but he ends up losing against Bradley Cooper at the end.
Yeah, it's not a big deal, but everyone and their mother knows it's unfair.

Probably the first time I've ever seen racism be dismissed before the Jim Crow laws were lmfao So, when the academy flouted all social norms to award a black actress for doing a superb job, you think that wasn't a show of recognition where it was deserved? Sydney Poitier won before all those laws were rescinded, so I guess that doesn't count either. Just 3 years ago, 12 Years a Slave won best picture. I guess all that racism came back since then.

Where did I say this. All I said was that you dismissed racism before the Jim Crow laws got dismissed. You realize how absurd that is, right? Literally you'd have to be insane to think that. There's a reason why no one told Martin Luther King Jr. to chill because Hattie won an Oscar... And it wasn't because he wasn't fond of movies.

Yeah, it's not a big deal, but everyone and their mother knows it's unfair. It's subjective voting.. like all-star game nominations and Olympic gymnastics, every outcome will seem "unfair" to somebody. History says that the accomplishments of black entertainers have been well recognized... so racial tensions flair, black awards go down... It seems just as likely that this is a coincidence as a conspiracy..

Selma was a HORRIBLE movie point blank and even saying it was horrible is giving it too much credit . If you want to rail against a snub then look no further than Beasts of No Nation which was a much better movie than The Revanant ( pretty good movie btw ) . Idris Elba deserves all the recognition that could possibly be heaped on him . I suspect that the reason it and he was snubbed was because it was a movie not created by the major studios . I firmly believe had it not been created by Netflix it would have cleaned up and that is more Tinsletown politics than racism and that is a shame.

Wonder what would happen if the NFL and NBA as well as other professional sports organizations had to meet a racial quota?
Interesting there is no complaint with non white athletes cleaning up monetarily in some sports and make more in a season than most people make in a lifetime.
This constant whining and moaning by some group is getting old and, quite frankly, is counterproductive to what they state is their ultimate goal. This attitude is more divisive than anything.

NFL and NBA will draft anyone if they can play ball. It does not matter what color you are. If you are a athletic freak who can play(which will make the owner money) and has the best athletic ability then you will be in the NFL/NBA. Race plays no part so this is a very silly comparison. This constant whining and moaning by some group is getting old and, quite frankly, is counterproductive to what they state is their ultimate goal. This attitude is more divisive than anything.
