I am encouraged. I would like to see a "no-tag" offseason if possible. If professionals are worth their money, then value them and give them some time frame. Tags are like arm bars in that you win for a year, but they can beat you up if used repeatedly.

Sending a message that you as a player will be dealt with honestly and you will get paid might go quite a ways with Mack and others. Aprecedent I would like to see set going forward.

NO KC for me please.

You have to remember this team lost 13 games this past season. The only 2 players I would say are untouchables are JT and Mack. Other than that I don't think it would make that much difference who left.

I understand that. We are losers until we are not. But how people are treated makes some difference. I certainly don't want Irv to replace him. Hope he ends up here.

Whitner says he expects Gipson to leave Browns

Posted by Zac Jackson on February 29, 2016, 8:19 PM EST

Browns safety Donte Whitner told reporters Monday night that he doesn’t expect free agent-to-be safety Tashaun Gipson to be back with the Browns.

“I want to be hopeful,” Whitner said, per Cleveland.com. “But knowing him as a personal friend, having our conversations, I don’t think that he’s too hopeful that he’s going to be back. So we’ll see where it goes. There’s still a lot of time till free agency, till you have to put the tag on guys and so on and so on. But from our personal conversations, I really don’t [think he will be back]. But hopefully that can change.”

A Cleveland.com report last week said Gipson “expects to move on” from the Browns. The Browns aren’t expected to use the franchise or transition tags on any of their pending free agents before Tuesday’s deadline.

The free agent market officially opens on March 9.

Gipson, 25, was named to the Pro Bowl in 2014, when he finished with six interceptions in 11 games. He had two interceptions in 13 games last season. He and Whitner have started together the last two seasons.

“Just knowing what he can do on the football field when he’s healthy, when he’s in the right situation how he likes to go and attack the football, how he attacks his work every day, still being a young safety and being able to produce in this league, and still having a lot to learn, I think it will be a blow,” Whitner said. “But that’s what this league is about. Sometimes you lose players, you have to develop players, sometimes you have to bring guys in, free agency, so I really don’t know the plan, but me personally, I do think it would be a blow.”

Farmer should have locked him up. Maybe Ray had concerns about injury?
We are "letting" a Pro Bowl safety leave because our former GM played hardball iirc? Or maybe Gibby wants to head elsewhere.

Oline:

If we can somehow work out a new deal with Mack, I would probably go ahead an tag Schwartz. Ee have the cap room, and it'd give us time to work out a deal with him..

Gipson:

I don't think any on really knows what Gipson can be.. is he a legitimate pro bowl Safety? Or did he just have one good stretch? Can he ever come back fully from the injury?

I understand he wants to be paid, and I understand the team wanting to protect itself contract wise.

When I look at Gipson, I don't nessecarily see an all pro DBS that you'd be crazy to let walk..

If you fix the pass rush, and find a way to occasionally stop the run, whomever is hack there will look pretty good..

Get off your Banner Horse already.

Gipson comes off an injury and he can't cover squat let alone tackle.

You keep spouting off this defense sucks. So let's keep the very pieces that contribute to that suckitude. Great plan.

FS is by far the easiest spot on a field to fill with someone capable.

The real problem on this defense is the LB's. Has been for years. The 2 best D's in the NFL, of which both were in the Bowl have kick ass LB cores.

Screw Gipson. Go get Trevathon and land Ragland late first round. THAT will make a much bigger impact on this defense than any FS.

Well now wait a minute.. Sashi Brown just stated in an presser last week that while they didn't think they were going to use any tag on anyone he acknowledged that (paraphrasing here) that Gipson might be candidate for a tag

So, what do we make of that.

Which is the very reason the two sides couldn't come to a deal last offseason and why he was placed with a tender. My guess is nothing has changed. I'm hoping the guy gets a flavor for his market value and, in the end, comes back home.

I didn't read the article but there was something alluding to him wanting McCourty money?

Maybe a wait-and see tag? Let's see what an injured player who hasn't shown a bunch is worth to other teams. Maybe a radical and rude awakening. But there always seems to be some NFL club willing to overpay a bunch for marginal players. Bowe is a case in point. Find his replacement. I wouldn't call him a top FS. Shop around.

This? Why, I can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl...

In the end, the Browns will offer him a deal based upon where they think he is right now and in a couple of years from now. It will be weighed against how hard they think it would be to replace his production in the new/returning system and the extent of his recovery from injury.

Gipson, on the other hand, if not tagged, will almost certainly test free agency. He's getting his first real contract following his rookie deal, and he's just coming off a somewhat serious injury that might impact how he gets paid in the future..... he has to be thinking of protecting himself long-term RIGHT NOW, so he will almost absolutely be chasing the most guaranteed money that he can get. You can take it to the bank that his time in the NFL will be shorter than Mack or Thomas; he might not get another contract after this one, so he needs to make the most of this one opportunity to hit it big.

Yeah, and Donte said he still thinks Manziel can be a nfl starter. I'm kind of getting irritated with Donte. I understand he's likely getting asked these questions specifically, but you're pimping up a drunk kid who hits women. Avoid them topic like Hue, Sashi, Pep and all else on the Browns do when asked about that troubled kid.

Whitner on Manziel...He said that prior to the major problems where its basically gotten him fired.

The guy is a Browns fan, he would love nothing more than be part of a winner here. Obviously we brought a number to the table and Gipson's people rejected it. And obviously Gipson's people put a number on the table which we rejected.
And NO I have no proof of this or an article..."OBVIOUSLY" sort of means Common Sense says.

Transition Tag? Match or let go...but at least gives us a final say in keeping him to an acceptable contract.

I said it several days ago. FS is not a HIGH ticket item in the NFL. You want to keep your QBs. LT, Edge Rushers, Cover Corners....then all else take a back seat to the cap and the future cap of the team.

It will be a shame cause we got him to grow into a very good player from a UDFA investment. Yes, it would have been nice to get him in an extension before the end of the 2015 season...once it gets that far usually it goes to FA. In defense of the Farmer stuff 2014 he had a season ending injury and then 2015 he was rusty and working himself back. If we made an offer under those circumstances I'm sure it was one that Gipson's people could say NO to.

Just another bad timing stuff. Man I hope we keep this Organization together now for a long time. Stuff like this probably would not get that far.

Lets hope Horton can make a Good FS out of somebody on our roster that will step up. Or we make a SHORT TERM FA investment as we groom somebody into the position. The skill set is not difficult to fill - but its the mental capacity that separates the Good/Great FS from the Average.

It was more about keeping the entire line together. Cohesion.

If Mack leaves, then cohesion is ruined anyways, so while I'd like to still keep Schwartz. Mack staying means Id REALLY to keep Schwartz.
