“There’s things that he’s going to have to do in his personal life and his professional career to get it on track also, and there’s no hiding that,” safety Donte Whitner said of Gilbert on Monday. “So hopefully he’s doing what he’s supposed to do right now, so he can come in and contribute to this football team this year, and I haven’t had any contact with him. I haven’t spoken to him.” To have a chance at success Gilbert needs to come back to the team “with a new attitude” and be “willing to learn and do the small things it takes to be successful,” according to Whitner, who has his doubts that Gilbert is willing or able to do that. “If not, I don’t know what will happen,” Whitner said. “… But the slate can be wiped clean for him if he comes in with the right mindset, in the right shape that he’s supposed to be in. It can all change for him.” This is the second year in a row that Whitner has challenged Gilbert to start acting like a professional. “It’s time to grow up and not be a kid anymore. It’s a wasted year for him,” Whitner said following Gilbert’s rookie season. “There were so many ups, so many downs – a lot of it has been brought on by himself. He has to look himself in the mirror like (linebacker) Karlos Dansby said, he has to understand what he did wrong, what he needs to get better at, and make sure that you’re back here working out from day one when we return here to show everybody you have a good attitude and you want to go out there and be the player they drafted you to be.” Whitner’s comments are in line with other reports about Gilbert not wanting to put in the time to be successful. Former team staff writer Kevin Jones detailed some of the issues in a November story in Scene magazine: Gilbert just doesn’t get joy out of breaking down the Xs and Os. Flashy plays get him going, not the nitty-gritty details that define professional football. Gilbert is on an island in a way, just not the way the organization wanted. While other Browns players generally make an effort to get to know each other in the locker room and cafeteria, Gilbert is usually by himself, sometimes even leaving the facility during the free hour period before practice. Team good guy Joe Haden attempted to mentor Gilbert this offseason by working out with him in Miami, but Gilbert continued to push away veterans looking to help guide him in Cleveland. He’s isolated himself from the team. There might not be anybody in the NFL who cares less about football than Gilbert Gilbert’s defenders have spent the past two seasons blaming former head coach Mike Pettine for all of Gilbert’s problems, while ignoring what his own teammates were saying and what those close to the team were reporting. Those excuses are gone now, though, as the Browns have another new coaching regime in place. A new coaching staff can present a clean slate for Gilbert, it is also true that while he has been wasting the first two years of his career everyone around him has been working to get better. And with cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu on the mend and the possibility that the Browns may look at cornerbacks in the 2016 NFL Draft, Gilbert’s days may be numbered. And this time, there will be no one to blame but Gilbert himself. http://dawgpounddaily.com/2016/03/01/donte-whitner-justin-gilbert-needs-a-new-attitude/ok I am done with this kid...next

I believe it's come to the point that Whitner should play better and talk less.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I believe it's come to the point that Whitner should play better and talk less. Yes, because he's wrong about Gilbert Gilbert as been almost as big a disappointment as Manziel. Not quite, but damn close. So for a Pro like Whitner to call him out is, IMO, a good thing.

I know it's just me, so don't rip on me - but I wrote this kid off when he was asked if he thought he would start and his immediate response was a monotone "we'll see". That moment was it FOR ME.
He doesn't want it on the inside, so it's pointless to bask on the features he displays on the outside, which there some freakish talent and etc there. Ah well, I got more hope on Ifo's behalf than Gilbert. Ray Farmer, ugh!

Damon, stating the obvious and airing dirty laundry in public I don't see as a good thing.
All Browns fans know that Gilbert has been a waste of a draft pick. We all know he hasn't done the work to produce. There's nothing newsworthy about anything he said.
Whitner himself has slowed a step. Nothing is to be gained by his statement. It serves no purpose. Now if you see that as somehow being beneficial I have no problem with that. But I see it as pointless rehashing of the obvious.

Phil Taylor did a lot of promotional events as well.. he still got the pink slip. I think someone needs to be hard on Gilbert.. maybe not in public tho.. As most say.. Keep it in the locker room. 20 years from now, let Gilbert say hey.. those guys were hard on me, and I appreciated it.. The way Whitner keeps talking to media, Gilbert is just gonna keep on his same way.

Possibly. Whitner is also one of the few Browns players that spends time around town in the off season. It may explain why he was chosen along with Hartline to go. Hue Jackson and Bernie also went representing the Browns for Ford, one of the team's sponsors. All guys actually in town this time of year.
Might be milking that cow a little more before putting it out to pasture.

I know, why should I love a pro bowl, SB winning safety that we drafted? That's just nuts.

nah just in a hurry...was running out the door
lol...As was my original Gilber title this time last year...well closer to Training camp.
Pit...its the off season I see nothing wrong with Whittner being right on the money. All that he said seemed to be correct. Whittner has been working hard (he might be getting a little ragged with age) but he has given a good example for the youth to follow unless you have heard other wise. ???
I don't know if he has any guarantees with his contract at a certain day or a roster bonus. If not no reason to throw him away too soon. Mini and training camp he will show Horton what he is worth. If nothing then he could be gone, if matured and is working hard so be it. Don't know why he has this attitude? Did he come with this premadonna attitude?

Well, I never seen somebody blame whitner for the reason ward got traded.
That's squarely on farmer, as far as I'm concerned.

My point is that people say he sucks when in fact, he and Ward are almost exactly the same.
Anyway........Gilber is getting a pass again. Weird.

Kind of getting a lil tiresome of the Whitner blows, Ward is/was the BEST talk. Why the Hell do you Whitner people/haters only focus in when the man whiffs on a tackle or chooses a bad angle? How come when he gets up on the line and is blowing by our defensive front to stick his nose in the run game, Noone says anything? How come when he destroys someone and jars the ball out in doing so, it's nothing but the sound of crickets?
I'm not saying he's elite and I'm not saying he's better or worse than TJ, but can't we be appreciative of a guy that's been playing good for our city, been active within our city and has been a vocal leader in the locker room? A native that understands our city?
Some of you people... I mean gosh. Go ask TJ if he's willing to have your baby if you're that attached. It's getting old now guys.

Explain to the board how many games that has helped us win.
Gilbert is trash, and he needs to step up or he's gonna be just a special teams guy.
But whitner has plenty of room for improvement himself, because so far he hasn't been as good as advertised.
At the end of the day, the fact of the matter is that whitner was a starter in one of the most trash as defenses I have ever witnessed on this squad.

Gilbert as been almost as big a disappointment as Manziel. Not quite, but damn close. I would disagree with that. Gilbert was a top 10 pick, Manziel a 22 pick.. Manziel showed flashes of being able to play on the field, Gilbert has shown NOTHING... Manziel has been a much bigger story, but from a pure draft perspective, Gilbert is a HUGE bust... and the only thing that keeps him from being mentioned at/near the top of long line of draft busts is the fact that he was drafted the same year as Manziel..

Bro if you fault our losing season because of a strong safety/Donte, then I'm not even sure how to respond to that. We lose because we suck as a team and as an organization, not because of Donte and not because we didn't retain TJ. Legit question to all willing to respond - if we never signed Hitner and we kept TJ within our schemes and etc, what difference would it have made in terms of wins and losses?

Both of their problems is between their ears, just manifested differently.

However, he doesn't wan to put in the hard work necessary on a day to day basis to be great on every play. The plays where the QB doesn't dare throw the ball, or a solid pass breakup, these plays are every bit as important, over the course of the game, as the flashy INT and return. Gilbert just doesn't seem to get this. It's a shame, because, physically, he is a very talented kid, with everything you would want in a lockdown CB. Unfortunately his "want to" is sorely lacking.

Whitner continuing to put it out in public serves no purpose. Parading it around in the press is pointless at best and self serving at its worst. It has nothing to do with T.J. Ward. In fact if Ward had done it for two years in a row, I would be saying the same thing. Me thinks you're being slightly defensive. But then again, defense wins championships.

Vers already said it, it isn't whitner's fault. and i have no problem with Whitner. but as the team goes, he was part of the problem, so him calling out gilbert does what? nothing. because calling out players when your underperforming yourself doesn't mean much.
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
