Not shocking news. It was a forgone conclusion when he signed this contract.

Not surprising, but still somewhat deflating.

It gives him more leverage in negotiations.
The big question is whether or not we can continue negotiations at this point?

Does his opt-out take effect on the 9th or immediately? If not until the 9th, then we can continue to negotiate and we know we're under the gun to make it happen before he can talk to other teams, etc...

If it takes place immediately, well, that sucks because we wouldn't be able to talk to him again until 4pm on the 9th, then.

No shock here, soon as the tag deadline passed - we should've all expected this. I'm actually optimistic on him returning though.

I'm not as optimistic as I guess you are. I think the "still possible" language is to keep adding more suitors to the conversation when the agent talks to teams. I hope I'm wrong.

I know this isn't surprising, but I have a terrible feeling him and Schwartz are gone.

Really, how so? IMO he's gone and he won't look back. The draft board better have an Olinmen up there early.

McCown will get in a few plays first.

At least we'd have a backup with upside "ready" for when McCown gets hurt. But, yeah, losing Mack would hurt. Could possibly slide Greco to center, if we re-sign Pasztor, but losing Schwartz then would be awful. We'd be back to zero depth.

Here's hoping we get them both back.

I'm wondering how much money he's going to get. I was thinking 10 mil a year before, but I'm thinking closer to 12 mil a year now. There really isn't much of a plan B for us. The only thing I can think of is that Wisniewski played for Hue Jackson in Oakland.

I was hoping not to hear this news but it is what it is.

Farmer accepted this deal, he shouldn't have handled it the way he did.

True $$$ will be a big key...

So what is the highest contract for a Center. Will Mack get offers for more? I'm hoping his agent miss his assessment on his worth. If he truly wants to stay here then I'm sure he'll give us an opportunity to get close to it. Just like many had come to Cleveland in the past to drive up their price. I think we will still work hard on keeping Mack here.

Schwartz don't know if we will work as hard.

Once all is finished...we know who stays who goes. Then we will worry about who plays where.

I think that it's more about guarantees than anything else, especially if he wants to come back here.

Make his 3 remaining years into a 5 year deal, similar annual salaries to Thomas' deal, with significant guarantees. I think that could get a deal done.

It would have made much more sense to franchise tag him twice though.

I don't know what the highest for a center is, but the average of all OL for franchise tagging is 13 Million and change. We can't do it, but it gives an idea what it might take., probably something like 15 to 18 mill a year maybe?

That's a lotta dough for a center..

Mack is as good as gone, why else would the team spend a 1st round pick on Cam Erving last year? Yes Erving could play anywhere on the OL (although none really well) but he came out of college as the top rated center so I've felt like Mack has been gone for over a year now. JMHO

The 3 highest paid Centers per year are Rodney Hudson and the Pouncey brothers at just under $9 mill a year so I around 10 mill a year should do it.

Franchise tagging OL is the avg. of the 5 best contracts of Left Tackles not Centers.

This 15 mil stuff is Sayonara for me. Sorry if that is his goal and a team is dumb enough to offer 15 mil if the average of the top 5 highest paid OL (probably LT) is just 13mil... gone

Ok but how does that square with the franchise Tag amount at 13 million? Oh wait, that's not just centers, that's all OL. Ok,, never mind

thanks wink that makes more sense and doable. 8.5 the first 3 years and all guaranteed...then 9 the last two. Something like that.

The question is, what winning/contenders are going to pay him big time, or even have the cap to do so? If he's wanting money, he'll likely go to another loser team, so why not get paid and stay in with a group that's actually pretty damn good.

We are the 2nd worst team on this league, why would you franchise tag any player.

Our team sucks, our offensive line is stable. I'm not against a fresh start but unfortunately that fresh start would involve Erving, and that's not the type of "fresh" I think most fans would want.

never know. erving might come around. i sure am not going to throw him under the bus based on last year. but the truth is we have 3 years before we have to worry about cap room.

until then overpay to keep our home grown talent. jmo.

Yes that was noted...the last numbers were from the top 3 Centers contracts from NFL Teams.

It was originally suggested that the Franchise tag was 13mil then Mack would be looking for 15mil...I then stated - tell Mack Good Bye.

That last figure where I was stating a possible contract from the 3 top Center contracts...not OL Franchise which are the Left Tackle Contracts. Not Center.
but thanks anyways.

This was expected IMO. He's been gone for over a year, at least mentally.

He'll go somewhere warm, cozy, and sumptuous.

Don't blame him, but I also don't care about him anymore either. It's whatever.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I dont see anyone paying a center, Even a Pro Bowl All Pro Center, more than 10 mil a year.

Dumb question, and maybe it's been covered in here and I didn't see it......but, he opted out. Can the Browns still sign him back? Or does opting out of his contract null any chance at all for the Browns?

JC...

The Harvard boys will be judged on their ability to keep the most talented players on our roster.

Mack and Swartz were among the top 5 in the NFL, at their position. If Haslam and Sashi Brown are serious about building a winning team in Cleveland, they have to pay those players who performed well, even when others were playing like crap and still drawing a paycheck.

My guess is Haslam and Sashi will not make a serious run at Mack because in their mind they have to justify using a 1st round pick on Erving, who had only 5 starts at center his senior year in 2014/15 and who played like crap as a sub for the Browns last season.

Now I expect the Havard bunch to spend those cap dollars on someone else's free agent rather than spending the money to keep their own players.

I HOPE I'M WRONG ...we shall see.
