Alec Scheiner to step away from role as Browns President

Alec Scheiner is stepping away from his position as President of the Cleveland Browns as of March 31, 2016 and will continue to serve as a consultant to the team through the end of 2016.


"We greatly appreciate Alec's commitment and work as President of the Cleveland Browns,” said Browns Owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam. “Alec is extremely capable and has helped us establish some very positive inroads with a significant focus on our fan experience, FirstEnergy Stadium and our business partners. He was integral to the rebuild of our organization, the renovations of our stadium and training facility, and many of our strategies on the football side of our business. His guidance has helped us accelerate our learning curve as NFL owners and that is something we will always appreciate. Alec is ready for the next challenge in his career, as our new structure would limit the opportunity for his leadership. He is one of the most talented executives in the industry, and we are fully confident that Alec will be successful in whatever permanent role he takes next. We wish him and his family only the best."


Scheiner served as President of the Browns since January 2013. During his tenure, Scheiner oversaw the transformation of FirstEnergy Stadium as well as the renovation of the team's practice facility in Berea. Under his stewardship, the Browns business made unprecedented strides. Scheiner overhauled the fan experience on game day as well as the team’s digital, audio and broadcast media.


"I have had an incredible experience with the Browns,” said Scheiner. “Cleveland is amazing and the fans are uniquely passionate. I want to thank Dee and Jimmy Haslam for the opportunity to do what I truly love: rebuilding an organization with a group of people who have shown unparalleled hard work, commitment to their team and city. I thought Alec did a good job on the business side of things. It was the rumors of him imposing himself on the football side that were worrisome.

I wonder why? In addition, I wonder who will replace him. Sashi is logical but he's got his hands full. Maybe Bryan Wiedmeier will be able to step back into a higher role. He's qualified but had that health scare a couple of years back.

They also have David A. Jenkins Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer as a possible candidate as well. That's internal.

I can't see Jimmy or Dee stepping into that role.

But some time back, I was looking at a video of Jimmy, and you know what, to me, he didn't look well. I'm not a doctor or anything, but he seemed to not look the same.

I have been wondering if he's well or not? Maybe that's why Dee is stepping in.

Or, could it be that he now is aware they are closing in on him for the scandal at PFJ?

Yes, but in the past she wasn't even mentioned. This is Dee Haslem move IMO. She has had an increased role in the team for the past several months. That's not a bad thing, by the way.

I don't think it's a bad thing either. But there's always a reason behind everything. I'm curious about this one. Not losing sleep over it.

There is already a show where they put a group of people alone together and let them struggle for power until everybody has been kicked out but the least qualified person.

If I had to bet money, I would bet that it is because of the harassment claims. He's staying on as a consultant, but Banner was going to stay on during the transition, and he was only here for a little while before he was booted ... err .... decided to leave earlier than expected.

That seems reasonable to me as well. I was kind of surprised that he was still in his position when Dee started having more of an influence in the team's affairs ...... but it looks like it was only a matter of time.

Joe Lull made accusations at the end of November and Alec reached out and called the guy and started following his Twitter feed.

Alec's last post on his own twitter feed was back in October.

I think he was given the ax a while ago, but with all the other drama going on they were keeping it quiet until now.

I also think these allegations had something to do with it and that was why he was also not in on the coaching search.

Joe Lull has been quiet since their talk, but there was a post on his Twitter right about the same time as the announcement that simply says "vindicated".

I agree. It looks like Dee will take over the business side. Scheiner was over stepping creating friction with his thirst for power. I hate it one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. I wondered what Alex thought he was accomplishing.

It looks like Browns are departmentalizing everything coaching, player personal, strategist, and team business.

Huh! Now Browns need football people to run concessions, marketing and sales, and manage the back office. Why can't football people do football things while business people do business things?
