The reality is that the money being thrown around is extremely high. If we're playing "moneyball" then we're not going to be the Yankees, we're going to spend money "wisely"...supposedly...

Too add to the fun, rumors are the Browns are hanging on to Manziel in attempts to trade him. Some things never change.

Agreed. I don't believe you can pin it down to one person or event. They'd better get to know their new linemates real quick because they aren't going to be as good as here...

This is really bad! Mitchell's brother, Geoff, is on twitter saying his brother went through some nonsense.

The Mack situation I kinda get. I think Mack didn't want to be hear, and gets to get his payday in a scheme where he can kill it, setting up another payday.

The Schwartz thing reads like one of those "Browns realized they haven't Browns'd anything in a while, so they did this".

How common is it to pull an offer off the table? ... on your own FA?

Like I said, not a good look for the new team.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

It has to be said, while it is not fun to see your team lose it's own free agents and see other teams signing guys to big contracts, there are still many quality players available.

Surely you don't mean another big payday AFTER this newest contract expires? No...

Are you guys really surprised? Would you want to play for a team that doesn't have a true GM? You really want to put your trust in sashi brown to make the team better? He isba numbers guy....not a talented evaluator. Haslam seems to think he is smarter than the rest of the league. ......

The Browns offered both Mack and Schwartz substantial contracts. One chose to go somewhere else and the other had his offered pulled for some [strange] reason.

This is not a "Sashi Brown doesn't know talent issue" this is a "we have sucked for a decade and a half issue."

Why would they care who's the GM? They play for the coachs and the paycheck.

Rumor has it that Schwartz was using our offer to shop himself around for a better offer, hence we removed it and I don't blame them, sign or go somewhere else.

Yeah, these players were so wanted by so many, until the FO blows all the deals. Then the players are trash and the excuses come popping out of the woodwork.

It's hard to explain the honeymoon sometimes.

I'm not making any excuses. I'm actually somewhat concerned that the money ball system isn't going to work this year precisely because the numbers were going to jump so high that we won't have time to account for them. In years where the cap is "relatively" stable it will hopefully work better, but when the average cap space is $25mil there's no reliable way to predict how the money is going to flow...

I haven't seen anyone say Schwartz and Mack are bad players (I have seen some say that about Benjamin).

The most disappointing thing about all of this is that neither guy was overpaid. They signed for right about what we thought they would. We had competitive offers on the table and they still walked. That is a bad sign.

I will wait and see what happens over the next week or so, but the early returns are not good.

Part of me feels frustrated that we haven't been able to keep any of our own players, but the other part of me feels like we went 3-13 with them here, so they're probably replaceable. I like the don't over spend strategy, but like most are arguing, at some point we do need to spend some money and try and improve this team. I expect to see some signings over the next week or so, but I'm thinking more 2nd-tier type of players. I think the plan right now has to be to build a young core through the next two drafts, and then when we feel strongly that we can contend for a division title, that's when we make the big push in free agency.

We're a rebuilding team, and giving players ridiculous contracts to come here right now doesn't make sense to me. Oliver Vernon from Miami just signed the biggest free agent defensive end deal in NFL history and he's only had one double-digit sack season in his four year career. He didn't do anything to help the Dolphins win last year. Most teams that win free agency don't do much the next year. Pittsburgh, Carolina, Seattle, Baltimore, Cincinnati and New England all usually are pretty quiet during free agency, and they find their success through the draft (along with franchise/coaching stability, obviously).

To be fair, overhyped is not the same as bad.

I am not happy about losing our guys, but here is some perspective:

This foundation #Browns fans are so terrified is being torn apart is 33-79 over last 7 seasons and a paltry 19-45 over the last 4

fact is we offered Mack and Schwartz contracts and Mack clearly wanted out. the pulling of Schwartz contract could due to a number of reasons. One of which may have been that he told the Browns he wanted out and would not sign thus they pulled the offer??? sounds logical to me...Travis also clearly wanted out or we just let him go to find a new home. I for one would rather have players that WANT to be here. the rest will hopefully sort itself out. Bottom line is that while we wanted them here they are not so time to move forward. FA is not over yet so we shall see what the future shall bring

You're likely correct. Pulling an offer off the table is a bargaining ploy. It is not the first time it has happened, but don't ask me to provide specifics...

I don't know why, but I find all of this hilarious. Not sure what is more funny:

I don't find what is happening to our team funny at all.

The excuses are pretty funny. It is pretty clear what is going on.
