Benji was a non-loss, IMO.
We should have done everything we could to sign the other 3.
This team makes no sense.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Gipson now 2 years removed from that nasty knee injury will return to his probowl form.....kid is a stud....and we let him go......good job sashi I'm pretty upset about how the day went down, particularly with the leaked information about Schwartz, but I'm glad we didn't pay Gipson that money. But perhaps we proves me wrong.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

No, just ask Denver. I admit this has set us back a year or two, but we'll bounce back... Ask Denver what? Ask them how they feel about losing QB #1 AND #2. Their problem is more serious than ours at this moment...and more difficult to resolve. Our current QBs are Josh McCown, Austin Davis, and Connor Shaw and we have no defense. Denver is miles ahead of us. Perhaps you misunderstood my intent. It will be much more problematic for them to repeat last season than it will be for us... My grades on our FA losses.
Alex Mack 5yr deal with Atlanta averaging $9.5 mil a year.
Mack actually took a little less money to go to Atlanta. Atlanta did offer more guaranteed money though. When Mack opted out, he said that winning was important, but it looks like guaranteed money was more important.
I can't knock the Browns for their offer. $50 mil over 5 years was more than fair and more than anyone else offered. Mack did not have his best year last year coming off of a broken leg and Atlanta fully guaranteed the next 2 years and a big chunk of his 3rd year when he'll be 33 years old.
Grade B-
Mitchell Schwartz
Rumors are that we pulled a 5 yr, $35 mil offer off the table. I don't know what happened in the negotiations, but the rumored offer is low in my opinion, given the rumors. Based on that alone I'm going to grade this a D- with the right to change it to an F at a later time. Letting this 26 year old walk is not going to get a good grade no matter how you slice it, But I don't know how much he got from the Cheifs.
Grade D- (possibly an F when more news comes out)
Travis Benjamin
Signed with the Chargers for 4 years 24 million dollars. This is about what I would have paid for a #2 and I have no idea if the Browns made that offer. Given our situation at WR, going as high as $7 mil a year might not have been a bad idea.
Grade D
Tashaun Gipson
Signed with Jacksonville for 5 years $35.5 million. Again, about what you would expect. Gipson and the Browns had a little bad blood, so there might not have been any way of signing him. He was the one player out of the four that I expected to go, but he didn't get crazy money.
Grade D+
Other grades...
Not one signing at the deadline when you knew 4 starters were leaving...
Grade F
Rumors that agents were not happy with the front office being hesitant...
Grade D (could have been an agent posturing)
Not signing anyone yet when a few players (Isa Abdul-Quddus, Rolando McClain, George Ioka) went for below market deals.
Grade F
Making it appear like players are fleeing a sinking ship...
Grade F
So far it does not look good for the front office. They need a heck of a 2nd day to change my mind.

All you whiners are forgetting all the money we are saving. I mean we are almost 50 million under the cap if that is not something to cheer about I don't know what is. I have been reading this board for a long long time and after reading over and over again about how much money we saved by not going out and getting players to help this team win a extra game or two a year so I can at least get a few more enjoyable sunday evenings I now drink the kool aid. Today was great, we saved money on some young free agents but remember we are keeping around some great players like whitner for 8.45m instead of Ilkoa who is 5 years younger and 5m a season, Bowe for 8m instead of Marvin Jones for 6.6 and already knows the system, Tramon Williams for 6.98 that was burnt almost every other play instead of just name a CB, Dansby who is an Ilb that is going on 35 years old and is making 6.5 m no upgraded or replacement need. And I almost forgot the icing on the cake we even saved money by not resigning our own young decent players. Brilliant. Go browns. Championship!!

Always. In a week we will have several new players. They won't be as good as the guys that left, but they will be real NFL players.

Maybe we're just waiting for next years free agency to make a huge splash. Give our new rookie QB a year to work out the lumps, then be poised for playoff push in 2017. More players will want to sign with us if we have a promising QB.

Looks like we are drafting Carson Wentz. FO must have decided best way to acclimate an NCAA Div 2 QB to a team is surround that QB with NCAA Div 2 talent.

Did anyone notify the Browns front office that free agency started today????? Given the events of today, a pretty damn good argument could be made that they were unaware.

I bet our D stinks, we can't run the ball, & we end up starting 3 QBs with these guys leaving.

#they'llprobablykeephimonthebenchallyear There must be some plan. We will need one of the best drafts in the history of drafts to improve on 3-13. I know some are rationalizing the inactivity by saying we were bad last year, but you can't convince me Mack, Schwartz and Benjamin were part of the problem. We are not better without them.

We fail to realize as fans we already had our Super Bowl(as in the browns highlight of the season) this year when we went coach shopping.

this is why you don't have business people making football decisions..so far this offseason has been worst case scenario after another...Please sell the team All of the players that left were offered significant contracts. This is not a player evaluation issue, it is a "our team has sucked since 1999" issue. and we have the cap space to sign them all and more
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

I just want this to sink in a little more...
We can't keep bleeding quality players that we have hit on in the draft
The past 2 years we have lost:
TJ Ward Alex Mack Mitchel Schwartz Jordan Cameron Rubin Jabal Sheard Buster Skrine Travis Benjamin Gipson
Possibly Robertson/Bademosi
I'm at a loss of words..
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

The thing is, some posters say "well, no Browns ever prove to be effective anywhere else so ... "
BUT, Sheard and Ward and Rubin proved to be VERY valuable to their respective teams

Do you think by the time their 5 year contract was up they would be play off winning team? How ignorant is over paying players who don't want to be here?

The problem is the players have to want to come back. The Browns front office can't make them stay even if they offer market value. If they don't want to be here, why overpay them to continue to be disgruntled? We've got to find a reason for players to be hopeful for the future that actually shows up on the field.

Wow .... I just don't know what to say about today. I was worried about the analytics crowd in the front office ..... and now I am downright terrified for the future of this team. I think that Benji was overpriced. I'm not upset with that one. Mack is 30, and so I could almost live with that one. Schwartz, though? Man, this is the kind of guy you work hard to bring back. I thought that Gipson was a good player, and at the right deal, he should be brought back. Instead, we have lost them all. Oh well .... maybe we're going for more compensatory picks, or something. Man, I want to have hope for this team, but they sure make it hard to do so.

The Browns are the least desirable franchise for a free agent to put on His destination list. Any free agent knows this franchise is 3 years away from being 3 YEARS AWAY. look at the division. The Browns have least amount of talent of the 4 teams

If I hear one more word about compensatory picks, I am going to puke. Really, we are choosing not to sign players so we can get second day draft picks the following year? Yes some teams do it because they have no cap space left and spend all of each year, and can not afford to sign talent. We are setting on 50 million that should be 60 or 65 at least if we would have gone to Yale and cleaned house. This team is giving Harvard a bad name.
