I don't know when our Flying J owner and his Harvard business GM will understand that teams that save as much cap space as they can, rarely win a damn thing.
Wow, I am not sure if you meant to insult me or not. My point is only that the Browns are operating in a totally different fashion than in the past. It is the pioneers who take all the arrows. I think Sashi and Haslam are courageous to try what they are doing.
voleur...I simply noticed that you have nothing to say about "football" and a lot to say about winning some imaginary prize for saving cap space.
Just so you know, the Browns have not won or achieved anything by lying about resigning their own free agents.

They never said they were going to sign all their free agents this off season. There was no lie.
Stating a general principle is not the same as saying something is absolutely going to happen.I think they would have liked to have all four back. The four were less enthusiastic about the idea.

With the loss of 40% of their starting offensive line in free agency and wondering if Joe Thomas is going to ask to be traded or forced out, this MIGHT NOT be the best time for the Browns to draft a QB at #2.
We've seen that act before..the Browns management drafting a QB, hoping he would develop into their franchise QB while playing behind a poor offensive line..as a result, after 5 seasons that QB was physically used up.
The mistake management made back in 99 was NOT using the draft to build their offensive line before drafting a QB. Back to 2016, to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past, the Browns should think about rebuild the offensive line before they draft a QB.
If Thomas is sent packing, the Browns will be left with two returning OGs and that is it. Drafting a LT might be the best choice this front office could make in this draft. It is hard to develop an young QB playing behind a suspect offensive line.

Lineman aren't sure things coming into the NFL. They often take time after joining the league. We just drafted Erving and everyone knocks him. He was a first round lineman. You want to draft another just like him? Why not try to develop the one we already have. We also signed Bailey. We'll have a solid side of the line from the center (I'm assuming Greco moves over) through Bitonio and Thomas. Wentz can avoid rushers if he sees them coming. Bailey might be an improvement in the running game. Erving or Pasztor are better than some RTs we've trotted out in the past. What team trots out 5 all-pros on the offensive line? Carolina made the Superbowl with Remmers at RT. Denver made it without Clady.
Why would we get rid of Thomas if we're trying to develop a QB?
The sorry state of our line myth is overblown. I think we'll be better than most posters on this board expect.

We've seen that act before. Yes, many of us who have been around the Browns for a long time have seen this act before. And most of us are not being fooled by the empty-promises made by Jimmy Haslam. Take a look around, most of the guys making excuses for the Browns are younger guys. Their innocence is refreshing, but their lack of experience is blinding them. You see, mac...........they haven't see this act before. We have.

That was the message Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown delivered Thursday at the NFL Combine.
“It is important that we keep our own,” Brown said. “It sends the right message to the locker room when you reward guys that do it the right way and make sure that they understand that being here in Cleveland we want to build through the draft certainly but we also need to retain our guys when we get to free agency.
Grimm, I'm sure you agree with Sashi as he spoke about retaining the "present" Browns free agents.

We suck BECAUSE we've blown draft picks over and over, this regime hasn't YET...give them a chance. Can't make free agents stay....we've stunk for over twenty years, so who blames them...our line won't be as bad as some think...we invested big last year on the lines...played one guy all over the place...SHOULD be better...with Gordon and Pryor should be better at wideouts....must draft better....GO browns!!!

I try to be objective and not see shades of the past. I try not to buy into the self-perpetuating negativity that has us mired in (insert expletive of choice). I can see to an extent your distrust of Haslam, but I think you go overboard with it. He got thrown into the deep end, and got some crap advice on who to bring in. He had the right plan, but was led to pick the wrong people to carry it out. There's not really a training program for NFL owner. Are you saying he should have kept the Pettine/Farmer dysfunction just for the sake of stability? What else has he "lied" about?

I try to be objective and not see shades of the past. The past must be considered when trying to find true objectivity. To ignore it would be biased subjectivity. Once again, Haslam and Sashi are not "new."

Grimm, I'm sure you agree with Sashi as he spoke about retaining the "present" Browns free agents. I do agree, and they tried to do that. He never said we will absolutely, positively, with no regard for the level of overpayment, bring back every free agent who doesn't want to be here. It was a forward looking statement of what they would like to do, not a projection of what would happen this offseason. Your negative spin game is trying to catch up to Vers. Spin works both ways. Positive is more productive. Would you rather have had him say "None of our players are coming back. They don't want to play here"? That would have gone over well.

Once again, Haslam and Sashi are not "new." Why don't you answer my questions? I think you are confusing the meaning of objectivity. Ignoring the past is the only way you can have objectivity. Objectivity is tied to the present moment. Biased subjectivity is expecting the past to have some bearing on the present. It may have been a poor choice of words in the original and I did expect you to jump on it immediately after posting. I probably should have said I focus on the present rather than I try to be objective. But I'm writing a message board post and not a research paper. What would you call them if not "new"? They are not long tenured in their positions.
Last edited by GrimmBrown; 03/18/16 10:03 AM. Reason: clarification: i,e. we still call the team the new Browns. They are the most recent to their position. Thus, they are "new".

We have yet to play a single game while this front office is in charge and implementing its agenda. I cannot comment on things I have no knowledge of. I could speculate on what I think would happen. That would lead me into being criticized for my speculation. I prefer to speak on things I either know or can see. As for the front office, I hear them talk about wanting players who want to be here. Mack, Schwartz, Gipson, Benjamin all wanted to be elsewhere because they left. They could have stayed if they were willing to live within the constraints of the new system. I suspect the players went for the money, security, and opportunities on other teams. In other words, they took the money as this is a business after all. I have read up on analytics and how it can be applied to running a sports franchise. If you play fantasy football, you in some ways use analytics. Analytics is just a means or a tool used to make reasonable predictions on future occurrences, such as wins and losses and cost per victory, yard gained, points, etc... Winning games is totally dependent upon the players performances on the field and the coaches decisions on and off the field. The job of the front office should be to put together the best possible team that they can using the variables they can control such as players on the roster. Salaries are a direct result of the players and talent. As the NFL is also a business, the variable of profitability and manipulating variables such as salary cap are all taken into the equation by the front office. Winning football games is the goal. It is not guaranteed by analytics, but it can be predicted by analytics.

Lineman aren't sure things coming into the NFL. They often take time after joining the league. grim...sometimes a team invests "years" into developing an offensive lineman in the NFL. I'm glad you recognize that fact.We just drafted Erving and everyone knocks him. He was a first round lineman. You want to draft another just like him? LAREMY TUNSIL, OT sets at the top of the draft. If the Browns worked out a deal to move up to #1 they could begin the rebuild of the offensive line by drafting a OT who is as close to sure thing as you are going find.
Erving was a horrible pick and it is going to be up to him to put in the necessary work to build his body to compete. As for him being a "center"...he only played 5 games at the center position in college...that does not make him a center. Why would we get rid of Thomas if we're trying to develop a QB? grim...If you were Thomas, would you want to stay in Cleveland?
Thomas, Mack and Schwartz were good friends and Thomas wanted the front office to keep the Oline together. Sushi gave his little speech about how important it was to keep our own free agents...
...basicly, Sushi lied to Thomas...they never even tried to sign Mack after he opted out, then they played their stupid games with Schwartz.
I could understand it if Thomas had enough of Haslam and his big brain boys.
grim...you ask, Why would we get rid of Thomas if we're trying to develop a QB?
Why would they get rid of Mitchell Schwartz?
The Browns had 4 yrs invested in Schwartz and he progressed to the point that he was able to handle Von Miller...and that was the reason the Chiefs jumped on Schwartz..they face the Broncos twice a year and now they have a RT who has already shown that he can block him.
But the Big Brain boys didn't see the value of retaining Schwartz and let him walk..4 yrs down the drain, just like that.
Browns should not draft a QB at #2.

Cleveland Browns: The Browns have been talked about way too much this month, with most of the discourse prematurely burying the Sashi Brown era. There's no denying that the Browns are less talented than they were a month ago. Center Alex Mack, offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz and wide receiver Travis Benjamin were three of the best players on the team last year. Safety Tashaun Gipson was coming off a down year, but he played a lot of snaps for Cleveland. The biggest loss was Mack. They wanted to keep him, and he chose to join his old coach Kyle Shanahan in Atlanta. The Browns oddly pulled their offer from Schwartz, raising fair questions about the front office. Free agency ghosts Dwayne Bowe and Karlos Dansby were let go. There's not a lot to get excited about on this roster, but making big noise early in free agency hasn't exactly worked for the Browns in the past. This is a complete rebuild. Let's give this some time. Grade: D+ link HUURRRAAHH..THE GRADES ARE OUT.
How did the Big Brain boys do?...D+
I'm sorry, that grade is too damn high...it should be an F.

So, please understand that I am not insulting you when I say this...we just disagree....and that is fine. Jimmy Haslam and Sashi have been here. They are not new. And since they are the top two guys, I doubt much is going to change. I don't think what the Browns are doing is "new." Haslam has proven to be a shady character. He talks big and then blows things up. Then it is more big talk followed by another blow-up. I suppose my skeptical nature is having a hard time buying into what he's selling. Now, I am not asking you to agree w/me. However, I don't see this as a "new front office" in the way that you do.

I don't see this as a "new front office" vers...Many might not realize it, but Haslam has been saying the same thing about building the Browns via the draft similar to the way the Steelers built their franchise...he's been saying that since 2012...Haslam is entering his 5th season as the Browns owner and we the fans are still waiting for him to back his talk up with actions.
Also, NOTHING happens in this franchise without Haslam approving it. He tries to put on a front like he is not involved in every decision or action..but he is 100% in control.
Sashi is just there to act as a cushion between Haslam and the media. No contract offer to Mack after he opted out...that is on Haslam... ...playing games with Schwartz...that is on Haslam, too.
I believe Haslam has some issues...trying to run his football team like he does his Flying J Truckstops.

We built one of the better OL in the NFL, and it gained us nothing. Without playmakers, we can have the best OL, and it won't matter.
I am not saying that we don't need a strong OL, and that we shouldn't have tried to keep Mack, and especially Schwartz ...... (I don't think that you just allow guys who are at or near the top of their respective positions to just walk, especially when one of them is a young guy like Schwartz) I think that we should have kept Schwartz, even if we couldn't keep Mack. We have plenty of cap space, and it gains us nothing to go into the season without a RT. Maybe we have an answer at Center, with Erving .... time will tell ..... but RT is going to be a far more difficult hole to fill. It was so unnecessary.
However, I will be absolutely furious if we created holes on the OL in order to just draft more OL high in the draft. This team needs a QB. This team needs receivers and a RB. This team desperately needs pass rushers, and a real difference maker or 2 on defense.
Solid to above OL can be found in the 3rd round on. Other teams do it. We should have, at least, kept Schwartz ..... but since we didn't, it makes no sense to dump yet another high pick into the OL right now.
Get this team players who can make a difference on Sundays. Get players who can score from anywhere on the field, or who can blow up plays by an opposing offense.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

deputy...on Schwartz...if you want a player, you don't play games and lie to him. What they did to Schwartz was BS and Sashi and Haslam have to answer for it...expect them to lie their asses off. Unless you were in the room with them, you can't make that statement. You don't know if there was a deadline or if his agent was trying to put the squeeze on the Browns. You have no idea if anyone lied. I'm unhappy that we didn't keep him, but I'm not willing to make stuff up to improve my argument. What I do know from Schwartz's Twitter feeds is that it was all about the money for him before free agency started and this stuff about not wanting to leave and just buying a house only came out after he signed somewhere else. Players are human too and don't want to look like the bad guys in negotiations either. How long does it have to take to rebuild a football team. If you retain your core the improvements can be seen quicker. That really depends on how quickly you hit with your draft choices. The core of the team...the one unit that excelled when other areas of the team did not...was the offensive line. Together, the Oline earned the respect around the league for the performances they gave under very adverse conditions.
The Oline lost their primary coach before the season started. Andy Moeller was brought to Cleveland to help teach the zone blocking scheme in 2014...and due to his personal behavior he was one and done.
That 2014 offensive line, the only year the Browns had with Andy Moeller, improved from the 12th overall OL ranking in 2013 to the 6th ranked OL in 2014.
In 2015, without their primary Oline coach, the Oline improved their ranking from 6th to 5th, with pass blocking being their strength, ranked 3rd in the NFL. It was pointed out that the strength of the Browns offensive line was their two tackles, Thomas and Schwartz. Agreed although Mack did not have his best year coming off injury. Instead of building upon the strength of the team, this front office decided to let 40% of their strength walk away. It is obvious that the IQ boys do not think in football terms. One of those two guys that left is 30 now. He didn't have his best year and is the highest paid Center in the league. If we get extremely lucky and this is only a 3 year rebuild, he would most likely be a 33 year old declining Center with $20 mil left on his contract at a time that we would need that extra money to add the remaining pieces. With the Browns expected to draft a QB in the first round, the Browns front office decided to scuttle the offensive line. Smart move...??? If our plan is to start a rookie project QB, it is doomed to begin with. It was reported that Colin Kaepernick was interested in playing for the Browns, until the news that the Browns IQ boys did not put a high priority on retaining Alex Mack or RT Mitch Schwartz. With 40% of the Browns offensive line gone...Kaepernick is no longer interested in playing for the Browns..per reports. Thank God! So, the Browns are expected to draft a QB and put him behind a suspect OLine. I wonder how that is going to work out?...as visions of Tim Couch flash through my brain. While the Harvard educated have not experienced the Tim Couch era in Cleveland...Browns fans have! The fans have an advantage when it comes to experience. We have seen rookie QB run for the lives. Again no start the rookie QB. No! Bad mac, bad! All it takes is one missed assignment..one hit..and your prize rookie QB could be facing season ending surgery. So, retaining an experienced center and RT are not priorities for the Harvard educated.
If it had been me, I would have spent the money to keep the one area of team that has performed well in 2015, together...doing my best to protect whomever is the Browns QB.
If the Browns rookie QB ends up on IR, you can expect me to say...I told you so! Can you remember the last time we didn't have a season that the starting QB didn't wind up on IR? Even with that dream o-line, we are still getting QB's killed every year. We will get most likely more than one killed next year. We offered Mack about the most I was willing to go for him to stay in Cleveland. He took less to go elsewhere because it had much more guaranteed money than our offer. Guaranteed money that a rebuilding team cannot afford to give an aging player. We are following a rebuild plan similar to what Oakland is currently doing. They hoarded cash and drafted guys like Amari Cooper, Derrick Carr and Khalil Mack. Then they used that hoarded money to build around them. You mentioned before that someone else "didn't understand the cap because you don't get any points for saving money". You don't get any points for wasting it either. The money that you don't spend gets carried over to the next year and you then have even more money to spend than everyone else. You hold up Denver's spending as an example, but who is Denver's QB this year? They already lost a major part of their defense this year, but what about next year when Von Miller and Demarcus Ware are both free agents? Emanuel Sanders is also a FA next year. The whole reason that you build through the draft is that you get some key pieces of your team for cheap while they are on their initial contract. The Seahawks don't make their run without Russell Wilson being there making less than their kicker. They could only spend money on guys around him because of that cheap contract. I know it sucks that we are built to lose this season, but that is how rebuilding usually starts out. The only part of our FA season that bothers me so far is not signing Schwartz, but again, I wasn't in the room. Stop pretending that you were. Okay, even thinking about signing Kapernick bothered me, but I think that we are over that now.

On Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and the ultimate test of NFL patience: Tom Reed By Tom Reed, Cleveland.com Email the author | Follow on Twitter on March 17, 2016 at 4:09 PM, updated March 18, 2016 at 11:53 AM link BEREA, Ohio – When she's not tackling league issues or assisting in a coach's search, Browns co-owner Dee Haslam runs a production company specializing in reality television. If only she knew the NFL's most impatient owner and got him to agree to a total franchise makeover under the direction of a football outsider. Now, that would be entertaining. Jimmy Haslam has hung onto flip phones longer than some of his head coaches. He's fired more people than Donald Trump before the latter became a presidential candidate and had his hand size scrutinized like a quarterback at a scouting combine. So it's noteworthy that an owner who's changed regimes three times during his four years with the Browns is leading the most audacious experiment the NFL has witnessed in recent memory. He's entrusting his team to a Harvard-educated, analytics-driven front office that many around the league want to see fail. Other than that it's just business as usual in Berea. As Paul DePodesta and Sashi Brown begin to tear down the roster and build through the draft, it's anyone's guess as to whether the plan succeeds. Maybe the biggest test, however, will be Jimmy Haslam's patience. How will a man who becomes more red faced than Chief Wahoo after a loss in September handle a long-term project that should carry the slogan: Check Back With Us In 2018. (By the way, you should see my ugly rose-colored mug on deadline. I resemble a walking hockey goal light.) Haslam spent months criss-crossing the country last year talking to top sports executives, learning the best ways to build an organization. Jimmy and Dee have put lots of work and thought into their non-traditional approach and it takes courage on their part to go this far against the grain. But does Jimmy have the stomach to sit through two or three years of losing while other owners he respects tell him privately: "Get rid of those geeks." DePodesta's confessions about overhearing disparaging remarks aimed at him and the Browns' methods should come as no surprise. Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot shared similar sentiments from league personnel in January. The Browns have been pitied, mocked and ridiculed since their 1999 return. This reaction, however, is different. While analytics has been part of football for years – Joe Banner started a deeper dive here in 2013 -- it's never been employed on such a grand scale. Or, spearheaded by an executive with a baseball background. If it works in Cleveland, it could make some in the NFL's old guard look as obsolete as Haslam's flip phone. You can bet there were plenty of surreptitious fist bumps among general managers when word leaked out the Browns might have bungled the last-minute negotiations to retain right tackle Mitchell Schwartz, who opted to sign with the Chiefs. Meanwhile, the hiring of coach Hue Jackson received almost universal praise, as well it should. But unlike his predecessors in the Haslam era, the new coach didn't make any free-agent splashes, a la Paul Kruger, Desmond Bryant, Ben Tate, Karlos Dansby and Donte Whitner. Jackson saw his front office allow Schwartz, Alex Mack, Travis Benjamin and Tashaun Gipson to walk. It also cut ties with Dansby, who despite being 34, remains productive. Who knows what happens in the hunt for Colin Kaepernick, or if that pursuit remains ongoing. DePodesta told Baseball America last week he received assurances from the Haslams that they were willing to endure the growing pains while essentially starting over. "I said, 'I need someone who's going to want to get on the roller coaster with me knowing that it's not always going to be fun,'" DePodesta said. Jimmy Haslam also said he didn't plan to "blow things up" about his last regime before admitting, "I don't think any of us anticipated going 3-13" on the Jan. 3 night he blew things up. The Browns could be facing a string of 3-13s before fortunes start to turn. We have no idea whether the men in charge can orchestrate such a massive overhaul and make the right choices with their war chest of draft picks. Maybe. Maybe not. Many believe the rebuild will take several years, perhaps as many as four or five. All eyes will be on Jimmy Haslam. Wouldn't you like to hear some of his conversations with DePodesta and Brown on Monday mornings after the club gets boat-raced by the Steelers and Bengals next fall? If only there were someone with the access and ability to produce a reality show.

From my perspective, you've nailed it pretty well. The thing is, we are not privy to the day to day conversations that go on in Berea. Many if not all of us might understand the moves (or lack thereof) if we were privy to the overall plan they have in mind. We may not all agree, but we might understand it a little better. This is my uninformed thinking as of this moment (I reserve the right to change my thinking as time goes by and we see what moves they make) As of right now, I think it's just a Raze and Rebuild. I suspect (as do many others) that Thomas is on the block. either this year or next. I think, based on what I've seen, it's going to take a minimum of 3 years to get to a place of respectability. with that in mind, Thomas will be too old to be valuable at that point. Thus my thinking that it's better to get what you can for him now and it gives him a chance to get to a better team and win a superbowl before it's too late. But please Sashi and Jimmy, do it respectfully. No bums rush please. Someday, he'll deserve to be in the Browns Ring around the stadium and I want him to think well enough of the team and the fans to come back for that ceremony. Next up, might be Haden. Again, I think some of that might depend on Ifo. We'll see. But I truly expect us to suck worse than we have for at least 1 year and perhaps 2. With my expectations set so low, I can't help but feel that I need to let it play out. It's probably better for my mental health as well

I suspect (as do many others) that Thomas is on the block. either this year or next. daman...I believe Joe Thomas was waiting to see if Sashi and Haslam were telling the truth..that they were going to try to retain Mack and/or Schwartz.
I would not be surprised if once Joe Thomas heard that the Big Brain front office pulled their offer to Schwartz and he signed with Chiefs...Joe Thomas called Haslam to discuss Haslam's and Sashi's public comments about retaining free agents vs their actions...letting both Mack and Schwartz walk.
I seriously doubt that Joe Thomas likes being lied to by guys like Sashi Brown and Jimmy Haslam. Thomas may have had enough of Haslam's lies about building via the draft. Joe should realize that the Browns want him to go.
Actions speak louder than words...the Big Brains intended to blow up the offensive line.

We built one of the better OL in the NFL, and it gained us nothing. Without playmakers, we can have the best OL, and it won't matter. daman...really?...so let Joe Thomas walk and put our 2015 first round center in at LT...see how that works out for our QB.

you get some key pieces of your team for cheap Finally someone admits the core issue with this franchise...CHEAP!
Haslam is too freaking cheap to retain his own players buy has not problem dumping millions on someone eleses leftovers!!!!!!The only part of our FA season that bothers me so far is not signing Schwartz, but again, I wasn't in the room. Stop pretending that you were. dep...you don't have to be in the room to realize these educated idiots tried a bait and switch on Schwartz and lost. They put a contract on the table and when he returned before free agency started, they started playing games.
For some, they won't get it until our #2 pick rookie QB is laid out on the field and spends the rest of his season on IR....only then will some realize, we "had" a pretty good Oline last season.
Browns had sixth-best offensive line in 2014... 2014

DON’T BLAME O-LINE FOR BROWNS’ OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES PFF's Sam Monson explains why Johnny Manziel will be taking the field behind the NFL's No. 2 offensive on TNF. link
The Cleveland Browns are averaging 3.4 yards per carry on the ground, and have surrendered 27 sacks across both starting quarterbacks—but PFF just ranked their offensive line as the second-best unit in the league through the first half of the season.
Why?
Every single starter along the line has a positive grade, which looks crazy when their running game can’t get anything done, and their quarterbacks have been sacked more than all but four other teams.
Offensive lines are far too often perceived to be the only component in blocking for both the run and pass; in reality, they are only the most important part of a bigger puzzle. Backs, tight ends, and receivers all play a significant role, especially in certain blocking schemes.
When you add up all the blocking grades by players at positions other than the offensive line, Cleveland doesn’t just rank towards the bottom—they’re dead last in the NFL, with a cumulative blocking grade of -29.1, three times worse than even “bad” teams, and five times worse than the league average.
For as well as Gary Barnidge has been playing as a receiver, he has been little short of disastrous as a blocker—and Jim Dray has been little better in his snaps. FB Malcolm Johnson is our lowest-graded player at his position. No blocking scheme in football can get it done just with the five guys along the line—even a light defensive front has six guys in the box, one more than they can pick up—so you need the other players involved in the run game to hold up their end of the bargain to have any success on the ground.
Consequently, the Browns are a team that likes to run outside zone, and can’t reliably get to the edge. Their average yards per carry around right end is 2.7; to the left, it’s just 1.1. Running either side of G John Greco, by contrast, is yielding an average of 4.0 yards per carry.
When they run outside zone, the Browns have gained just 104 yards on 41 attempts (2.5 yards per carry), compared to more than a full yard better when they run inside. When they run outside zone, the blocking is generating an average of just 0.49 yards before the running back is contacted, which is 24th in the NFL. Inside, that jumps more than a yard, despite poor lead blocking.
When you look at the passing game, the offensive line is again being undone by the other elements in the equation. Josh McCown has the 10th-highest percentage of passes that take 2.6 seconds or more, and Johnny Manziel is even worse at fourth-highest, with 55.6 percent of his passes taking longer than 2.5 seconds. The offensive line is simply being asked to pass block for longer than most teams.
The team runs the sixth-most seven-step drops, and though the sacks are high, we have charged seven of those sacks to the Cleveland quarterbacks, four more than to any single lineman. Despite blocking in an offense that asks a lot of the linemen, we have only charged them with nine of the 27 sacks Cleveland has surrendered. Tight ends, running backs, and quarterbacks have been at fault for 13 of them (the remaining being some form of unblocked or clean-up pressure, which will not be charged to an offensive player).
The offensive line alone has surrendered only 82 total pressures, 47 fewer than the worst unit in the league (San Diego).
If you look only at the success of the Cleveland running backs and the number of times their QBs have hit the turf, you’d think the line has been doing a terrible job—but the tape places the finger of blame elsewhere on most of those plays. Cleveland’s offensive line has been grading well overall, with Joe Thomas, in particular, a perennial stud. The Browns’ issues on offense are because they’re not getting help from anywhere else.

Might as well just forfeit the next 3-4 seasons, it will be less painful than watching this FO let our division rivals destroy us.

If they are thinking about drafting a QB and putting him behind a makeshift OLine with our 2nd teamers, we could see the second coming of the Tim Couch era.
What if Joe Thomas is so POed that he wants out..then what are the Big Brains gonna do?
It made perfect sense to retain the OLine free agents and draft a QB at #2.

Make-shift OLine? You do realize at this moment in time we are starting: Thomas Bitonio Greco Thats 3 (at the very least) solid to pro bowl level players. With two players that are questionable at the moment. Pasztor had a few good/decent games and the other one Erving was a rookie.....who played...uh, well we all know how he played. But he still has year, two years, etc to possibly improve (see DeCastro from Pitt). I'm not saying he WILL be good, but it's still a possibility, just like it can be a possibility that he plays like a bust. So at this moment that is 5 players who have played together in one capacity or another. I am not expecting or saying they will be a top 5 line. But to compare them to: Lomas Brown Jim Pyne Dave Wolabaugh Scott Rehberg Orlando Brown And we are still in the free agent period, haven't had the draft or close to the June 1st cuts or Camp cuts! So we still have time to find another piece or two, or to add to our depth since we just lost two good pieces. Also go back and look at Rivers, Rodgers, Brady, or Manning their first year starting. Most of those players either had a rookie LT (McNeil, M. Light, etc), a very young line or less, than what we have at the moment. *edit* Furthermore, we have a few comp picks this draft. If we are targeting a Center then that seems like a good time to target one. It's up to them to draft correctly.

Just clicking., I took a quick look, didn't see this posted. Interesting Cleveland Browns commit to full-scale rebuild under new regime
By Marc Sessler Around the NFL Writer Published: March 18, 2016 at 11:04 a.m. Updated: March 18, 2016 at 02:33 p.m.
When the Browns cut Karlos Dansby on Wednesday, Cleveland's newfangled front office gave it straight to the 34-year-old linebacker.
"They respect me enough to let me know, 'We're going to rebuild this thing and we're going to do it with younger guys and we appreciate everything you've been able to do for the organization, but we can't do that to you,' " Dansby told The Plain Dealer.
During a hushed free agency period for the team, the front office, led by Harvard-educated lawyer Sashi Brown, VP of player personnel Andrew Berry and former MLB executive Paul DePodesta, stayed quiet as all four of the club's top free agents -- Alex Mack, Mitchell Schwartz, Travis Benjamin and Tashaun Gipson -- bolted for greener pastures.
With a boatload of money to spend, Cleveland has spent next to nothing, adding low-octane names like Justin Tuggle, Alvin Bailey, Demario Davis and Rahim Moore. While opponents break the bank for high-priced talent, the Browns seemingly have gone AWOL. Cleveland in the crosshairs
Browns fans don't want to hear it, but this team was never going to be a "winner" in free agency. Per a league source familiar with the club's plans, the new front office fully expected the public backlash and understands where the criticism comes from.
The current thinking in Cleveland is that the Browns, at their core, can't be fixed through free agency. While eager to develop a winner, the new regime is comprehensively determined to go young and reshape the roster, starting with the Browns' 10 selections in next month's draft.
If this all sounds familiar, it should. There have been so many iterations of Cleveland's front office over the past 17 years that no mantra could feel fresh. Former general manager Ray Farmer also squawked about building through the draft, only to waste a bounty of picks on all the wrong players.
Brown has been criticized by some for being in over his head, while DePodesta's presence has generated a waterfall of corny "Moneyball" quips. The idea that an innovative baseball executive could help an NFL team has been met both with curiosity and plenty of resistance, with DePodesta overhearing his doubters at last month's NFL Scouting Combine.
"I was standing right in front of them in line [at the airport] and I could hear them in back of me and they were talking trash about me and the Cleveland Browns," DePodesta said, per Baseball America. "I said, 'All right, this is like 17 years ago in Oakland all over again.' That's part of the fun."
Starting over -- again
When you double down on a dismal 3-13 season by giving birth to one of the NFL's most unusual front offices, you're asking for trouble.
Old-school NFL people don't buy what the Browns are doing and neither do plenty of pundits and fans. The new leadership, though, feels a sense of positive resolve, the source explained. If people within the industry are rooting against this to work, the Browns are comfortable with that.
While Jimmy Haslam is derided for repeatedly blowing up the machine during his short tenure, the Browns owner and his wife, Dee, are on board with a total refurbishing of the roster. Laugh if you must, but there is a feeling within team walls that a genuine plan has taken hold.
That extends to Cleveland's top asset: new head coach Hue Jackson, who was briefed during the interview process about plans to blow up the roster left behind by Farmer and former coach Mike Pettine. Jackson is part of the healthy discussions and decisions over what to do with players -- and how to acquire more talent. The team's current direction should be no surprise to a coach who has seen his share of rebuilds.
As the Browns angle to stabilize their foundation over the next two drafts, the sense inside the building is that this offseason will be the hardest for fans to endure. The cupboard isn't just bare, it's a black hole, leaving this latest redo as the biggest rebuilding challenge Cleveland has faced since the franchise's return to the NFL in 1999. The way out
It starts at the top with Haslam. He must keep his finger off the trigger after firing three coaches and a cavalcade of front-office henchmen since buying the team in 2012.
It's not a shock to see this latest front office enduring growing pains, with some agents grumbling about "confusing" tactics and "mixed messages" during the first few days of free agency. The Browns, though, must try something different this time: Seeing it through. After landing one of the game's most innovative offensive minds in Jackson, it's time for Cleveland to pattern itself after the rest of the AFC North.
The process will be painful, requiring the absolute gutting of a roster filled with subpar talent. The Haslams, though, must trust Jackson, Brown, Berry and DePodesta to create an entirely new organization from A to Z.
"I think Jimmy and Dee really want to do this right," DePodesta said in January. "It was one of the things that made a big impression on me when I was meeting with them -- that they were genuine, they were earnest. They really want to get this right. They don't want to keep changing things, because they know ultimately that doesn't lead to success. I think there is going to be that mindset here."
Generations of Browns fans have no concept of what it feels like to watch competitive football on Sundays, but Cleveland simply needs to scan the rest of the division for a CliffsNotes version of how to dig out. Surrounded by three of today's most consistent franchises -- the Steelers, Ravens and Bengals -- why not follow suit and give this unorthodox band of team builders a long leash to do the job? 2016 NFL DRAFT
Looking elsewhere for hope
It was just two years ago that embattled Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie spoke openly about his prized offensive tackle, Jared Veldheer, choosing to leave Oakland in free agency, saying: "Losing Veldheer was a blow to me. He didn't want to come back. It wasn't about finances. The kid didn't want to play for the Raiders anymore, and I struggled with that."
Two promising drafts later, the Raiders have emerged as a sexy pick for the playoffs, with McKenzie saying of the free agency process: "It's good to see people call us and not always have to beg."
Losing key players, as Cleveland has done, is symptomatic of what the NFL's bottom feeders must endure. As ESPN's Adam Schefter noted last week: "Players treat the Browns organization like it's a college experience -- four years and done."
Changing that culture won't be easy. Every name we've mentioned above could be swept out of Cleveland if their "build-through-the-draft" philosophy churns out another two years of overly paid busts.
This remains a franchise with everything to prove and little to boast about. Understandably, plenty of people have given up on the Browns -- but they haven't given up on themselves. Rise or fall, this latest regime will be fascinating to watch.
