I am of the opinion that we are taking a QB at 2, even if we sign RG3.
I think the hope is that we wind up with a situation where we have 2 very good QBs, and flexibility going forward. Or that we are in love with another player?

Pretty cool site. Griffin has had 2 ACL reconstructions on the same knee when that happens the chances of reinjury are a lot more severe than a single ACL injury. That compounded with the fact that Griffin prefers to finish his runs like a running back instead of sliding compound his chances of getting injured. He is projected to miss a few games this season Behind our soon to be line, I'd say he'd be projected to miss more than a few games.

Untrue. They did not deliberately sabotage RGIII. They tried working w/him, but he didn't work out. These conspiracy theories that suggest coaches deliberately don't want players to succeed blow my mind.
I agree about the lack of deliberate sabotage, and I think his injury also played a large factor in his falling out. Not just the physical aspect, but the mental side and the effect on his confidence. When he wasn't right, they had to get Cousins ready. Being injured in the Pro's sucks because the amount of snaps they have to spread around is actually rather small. Having the lack of confidence in the knee, and having the apparent lack of confidence from the coaching staff (they really had to get Cousins ready) seems to have effected Robert. Hopefully he is far enough away from the injury to have it feeling right and be confident/ not think about it. Supposedly, Hue is good with the mental/confidence aspect with QBs. It sounds like we're gonna find out.

Additionally, I think people forget just how bad RGIII was in 2014. He was named the starter that year. He started 9 games, had 1,694 yds, 6 TDs, 5 picks, and 5 fumbles. And the sacks.......oh my goodness.......the sacks. Here, read this: RG3 took sacks last season at a historic rate Posted by Michael David Smith on January 2, 2015, 9:20 AM EDT Brooks Reed, Robert Griffin III AP Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III took sacks during the 2014 season like no other quarterback in the 21st Century. Griffin was sacked 33 times last year while throwing only 214 passes. How rare is that? Not since Hugh Millen of the 1992 Patriots has a quarterback been sacked so many times while throwing so few passes. The NFL started counting quarterbacks’ times sacked as an official statistic in 1963, and in the 52 seasons since then, only six quarterbacks have been sacked as many as 33 times while throwing as few as 214 passes: Griffin, Millen, Randall Cunningham in his first season, Mike Rae of the horrendous expansion Buccaneers, Bobby Douglass of the 1969 Bears, and Archie Manning — who did it twice while playing behind the awful New Orleans Saints line of the 1970s. It would be tempting to blame the offensive line any time a quarterback gets sacked that often, but in Griffin’s case it would be incorrect. Washington’s other two quarterbacks, Colt McCoy and Kirk Cousins, weren’t sacked as often as Griffin. McCoy was sacked 17 times while throwing 128 passes, and Cousins was sacked eight times while throwing 208 passes. No, the problem with Griffin is that he isn’t good enough at getting rid of the ball when he’s under pressure. Griffin has been sacked at least 30 times in all three of his NFL seasons despite never throwing more than 456 passes in a year. (For comparison with a passer who’s good at getting rid of the ball, Peyton Manning has never been sacked 30 times in any of his 16 seasons despite always throwing at least 453 passes.) As a rookie, the 30 sacks Griffin took just seemed like part of the cost of doing business for a quarterback who was so good at making plays with his legs that he ran for 815 yards. But this year, when Griffin took 33 sacks despite rushing for only 176 yards, it seems like he’s still trying to rely on his legs to get him out of trouble — but his legs aren’t getting the job done anymore. RG3’s sack rate is another reason to think that building him into a franchise quarterback is going to be a difficult, and maybe even impossible, job. https://www.dawgtalkers.net/ubbthreads.php/ubb/newreply/Board/1/Number/1093572/what/showflat/fpart/8

He did dislocate his ankle in week 2 of 2014 according to that injury site you linked. I'm not sure why they didn't just shut him down after that. Mobility is such a part of his game, and I don't think a dislocated ankle is something that you can really fully recover from during the season. Not being able to move right, not being confident in his plant, probably some pain factor involved, I'm not surprised he did poorly. Hopefully he's fully healthy now.

I hope we sigh him. In a perfect world, we don't go QB before round 3.
We will gain some comp picks next year that can be traded. The word is we won't be all that good this year.
What qbs are slated to come out next year? Are they better than the guys on the slate this year? Maybe the plan is to gain picks next year and go get our guy then.

The problem is next years class at the moment looks pretty bare. Deshaun Watson, if he comes out, is the only QB currently seen as possible 1st rnd pick. They were talking about this very thing on NFL Network Radio on my way to work last week and the guys said that the Browns needed to get a QB this year if they want one cause next year's crop didn't look too promising.

And if the "will wasn't there," than that would be an even bigger negative on him.
I am more open minded and unbiased than you give me credit for.
I stated that as a big negative. So was the comment that he did not progress like a 2nd year QB should.
But if you can't just Cherry Pick. He definitely lost trust in the Shannys. No excuses just covering the basis.
You can disagree with me all you want no need to bite your tongue. Say your opinion as long as you don't insult mine. I'm pretty consistent if I waiver on a subject its because I've been convince.
But I didn't EXCUSE RG3 - I pretty much described his negative in all this.
He definitely is partly to blame if he lost his will. But you who have coached in the past, I don't care what level. The basics of football is the same. Its the coaches responsibility to get players Gungho and on board. Its a negative 100% on RG3 but also a negative on the Coaching staff.
Question is can Hue get him the "WILL" back to become the best QB.
Oddly I think he does. He relates to players not in a Romeo too soft fashion but pretty stern and yet gets them all on board.
I think Gruden mostly failed in that department. There is enough blame to go around. I didn't hold back on RG3. I for some reason you thought I put that out there as an excuse...no it was a negative observation on RG3. Give me a little credit on being pretty fair.

Mobility is such a part of his game The problem with RG3 is that he has NO GAME without his mobility. He is an over-hyped running back that throws the ball. He is not a quarterback. He can't and doesn't do the things that make a QB successful and when pressure comes he defaults to trying to rely on his athleticism to bail him out because that has always been his bread-&-butter; it is what got him to the NFL in the first place... the problem is, that's all he's got and it simply isn't enough at the NFL level. Like many before him, he surprises the league for a bit, but two things ALWAYS happen: defenses figure out your tendencies, and age and injury sap your ability to run and escape..... and once those things happen, if you haven't begun to master the other things that make a QB a QB, you're toast.

Wake me up when the Browns stop addressing their QB Issue with other franchises failed QBs. He's a bust plain and simple. Sounds right but each player and situation is different. RGIII or Kap or someone else, might be way more effective under a guy like Hue Jackson. Again, look how he worked with Terrell Pryor in Oakland to see how it can work. Rich Gannon under John Gruden wasn't bad either. Again, I'm not sitting here proclaiming that RG is the answer for the Browns. I don't know that. But keeping an open mind, he has some serious skills and if someone can bring them out, even if it's only for a few years until our long term answer is found and coached up, that would be terrific.

He throws well from the pocket. When he had one. Don't confuse an asset of his to actually be a crutch of his. He is not a Michael Vick. Coming into this league he was a QB first and a runner second.
What ever bad habits he obtained can we correct them? Who knows. But to stated he was not a QB is well an opinion that I don't see.

I don't need an open mind when it comes to this. I'm a fan - I want the team to actually play the odds and do what actually has the highest chance of success. I do not want to waste time watching my team attempt to be the home of reclamation projects being done on the cheap - I want them to find and pursue actual solutions to the problems. he has some serious skills and if someone can bring them out No, he doesn't. That's like saying Napoleon Dynamite has skills. RG3 has athleticism, but that is fading. Once he loses that top-end speed that set him apart, he's just another guy that can't read a defense running for his life behind a bad line.

Coming into this league, he was a Spread Offense, Read-Option QB that didn't have to engage his mind before the snap to know what to do with the ball. He had a simple "check with me" offense with the coaches. In the NFL, he doesn't know where to go with the ball which is why he hangs onto it and takes so many hits, which leads to him doing lots of running for his life. The ONLY way you will fix his "bad habits" is if you can force him to be able to read defenses so that he knows where to go with the ball pre-snap.

Honestly Purp, I don't know how you can say his athletic ability is fading. None of us has seen him do anything for a season. As for Skills, he's got them but man do they ever need work. As Vers pointed out, there are holes in his game. Maybe Hue can work with them,, Dunno No need to get Riled up, as I said, I'm not all that excited about him coming here. I just don't have any control over it.

It's crazy how fast the story can change, but they don't call it the N (Not) F (For) L (Long) without reason. Read this story on his award if you'd like a refresher: Link

figure this was the best thread to put this in since it would be dependent upon us signing RG3
ESPN New York's Rich Cimini reports the Jets "have interest" in acquiring Josh McCown.
The Jets have been at a stalemate with free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick and have begun discussing other options. In Cleveland, McCown seems likely to be the odd man out with coach Hue Jackson wanting to go with a veteran -- likely Robert Griffin III -- and an early-round rookie. The Jets would prefer McCown be released rather than having to trade for him, but Cimini ranks McCown as the most likely quarterback to land with the Jets should they not re-sign Fitzpatrick.

Jay Gruden: RGIII hs to master the dropback passing game Washington coach Jay Gruden has some advice for his former quarterback, Robert Griffin III: Learn how to pass from the pocket.
Gruden said at today’s league meeting that he thinks Griffin is fully recovered from the knee injury he suffered at the end of his rookie year, and capable of making plays with his legs again. But Gruden cautioned that for Griffin to have a long and successful NFL career, he’s going to need to rely less on his athleticism and more on throwing the football from the pocket.
“He can do the zone read, he can run the bootleg and all that stuff that makes him effective outside the pocket, but I think eventually he’s going to have to continue to master the dropback passing game in the NFL, which he needs to continue to do and he will do,” Gruden said.
At the moment, the Browns appear to be the most likely destination for Griffin, and Cleveland coach Hue Jackson would probably agree with Gruden: If Griffin is going to have a long and successful career, he’s going to learn how to be a dropback passer.

Chiming in.
If you're the Browns, I don't see how passing on RG3 would be smart.
I also don't see how passing on a QB at #2 would be smart.
Here's the bottom line: it costs the Browns nothing except for cap space to sign RG3 and give him the opportunity to fix himself. If he fixes himself? Fantastic. You may have a franchise QB. If he doesn't fix himself? It's no loss. You are NOT giving him the keys to the franchise by signing him.
But you STILL take a QB at #2 this year. No more waiting. No more cold feet. No more "let's get a good team around the QB THEN take the QB!" (this scenario very rarely happens, and when it does it's almost by accident). No more drafting a mid-round or late first round QB. No more "let's wait til next year when there will be a better QB class!" a) there is no guarantee you will be in position to take one next year, and no guarantee you will be able to trade into position to take one. b) every year people say this and since Andrew Luck the narrative has always been come draft time that the QB class is disappointing) Take the best one available. Take him. Just do it.
Heaven forbid RG3 works out and you have a #2 overall pick on the bench. I'd be far more worried if neither QB pans out.
I simply think the Browns are hedging their bets.

Very interesting. I'm sure we won't cut McCown now that there is interest in him. I never saw cutting McCown as a reasonable option. regardless of RG3 and rookie coming on board...both would need some mentoring. Something RG3 never got.
We can more than handle his contract.
This is JETS ammo to put in their negotiations with Ryan Fitz... Heck if they offered us a 2nd rounder, we would suffer the loss of a mentor. The actual key will be - do they Sign Ryan Fitz or not. They don't care about McCown. Only if Fitz goes somewhere else. A bridge QB to help Mentor the guy they take in the draft I guess.

As long as RG3 is only keeping the spot warm for the QB we take at #2, then sure. I'd rather not start a rookie in week 1. I still think RG3 is trash, but whatever.
I'd expect we then trade Josh too.
