With RGIII set to become a Brown today, that figures to make Josh McCown available in a trade. Jets, Broncos, Rams still with QB questions.

I know there's already a thread, but it's official now.

All over Sportscenter.

Looks like McCown will be traded and we're still drafting a QB at 2

so, i support this signing.

whats funny is that we was willing to trade away all those picks for him in 2012.

but then it didn't work out. and low and behold, he ends up on our team, anyway.

Welcome to Cleveland, RG3.

Still I don't get how this signing should have any impact on McCown or if we WANT to draft a QB @ #2.

Admittedly, I thought Kaep was a done deal just a few weeks ago.

I would keep McCown unless someone is desperate and throw us a 3rd or 4th.

But will RG3 be able to:

A. Be effective again
B. Accept not being our future

My guess is that he knows that drafting a QB at pick #2 is a possibility.

Browns sign QB Robert Griffin III
Posted 0 minute ago

Andrew Gribble
Senior Staff Writer
@Andrew_Gribble
Former Redskins signal-caller ready to compete in Cleveland

Robert Griffin III was sold on Cleveland as soon as his meeting with Browns head coach Hue Jackson and associate head coach Pep Hamilton was complete.

Now, the former Washington Redskins quarterback is focused on just one thing: Coming to the Cleveland and competing to become the team’s starting quarterback.

Griffin, a free agent, made it official Thursday when he signed with the Browns.

“I'm excited about the opportunity to join the Dawg Pound and help build something here in Cleveland,” Griffin said. “Coach Hue and Pep, I had a great meeting with them. I really believe in what they preach and how they can help not only me as a player but this team win games and that's what we're all about.

“I'm just excited to come in and compete. Nothing's ever been given to me in my life, so I just want to go out and compete with the guys and grow with this team. I feel like that's all I'm really focused on.”

Griffin (6-foot-2, 218 pounds) is entering his fifth NFL season out of Baylor. Originally selected by Washington with the second overall pick in 2012, Griffin has appeared in 37 games with 35 starts. He has completed 679 of 1,063 passes (63.9 percent) for 8,097 yards with 40 touchdowns, 23 interceptions and a 90.6 rating. He has added 1,480 career rushing yards with eight scores.

“We are excited to add Robert to our team,” said Browns Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown. “Robert possesses a unique skill set at the quarterback position. He has played at a high level in this league and is intent on doing everything in his power to return to that level on a consistent basis. After meeting with him, having him work out for us and doing our diligent research, we felt it was right to grant him an opportunity with our organization. We were able to see and feel his passion and commitment to re-establishing himself as a starting quarterback in this league and his embrace of the hard work that will be is essential to his development. We've been clear on the importance of improving and stabilizing the quarterback position for our franchise. We have said that the draft is and will be our primary focus, but we will always look to complement the draft through free agency, and this is one of those examples. We look forward to working with Robert and getting him in the building with his teammates at the start of the offseason program on April 4.”

Griffin III becomes the fourth quarterback on the roster, joining veteran Josh McCown, Austin Davis and Connor Shaw. Only McCown carries more experience in quarterback room that will be guided by Jackson and Hamilton.

“We are excited about Robert joining the Cleveland Browns,” Jackson said. “He brings starting experience to our team and organization. He's a young, athletic, talented passer and he's really just starting out in this league. Just like every player on our team, Robert will have to earn every opportunity he gets. He will compete with the rest of the quarterbacks on our roster and he helps improve our QB room, which was one of my goals upon taking the job. It's a special room and we want to put special people and players in that room.”

Griffin set NFL rookie records for passer rating (102.4), interception percentage (1.27) and rushing yards by a quarterback (815) en route to being named 2012 Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year and a Pro Bowl selection. He led the Redskins to a 10-6 record and their first division title in 13 years. Griffin totaled 3,200 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions, while adding 815 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

Starting 13 games in 2013, Griffin recorded a career-high 3,203 passing yards, as he became the fifth quarterback in NFL history to record 3,000 passing yards in each of his first two seasons. He started seven games in 2014 and registered 1,694 passing yards. Last season, he was inactive 15 games and dressed but did not play in another. He was released by Washington on March 7.

“(The experience in Washington) helped me become a better person and a better player and showed me how much I love the game of football,” Griffin III said. “I cherish the opportunity to get another chance to play this beautiful game.”

He started 40 games at Baylor and earned the Heisman Trophy following the 2011 season. He completed 800 of 1,192 career passes (67.1 percent) for 10,366 yards with 78 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He added 2,254 rushing yards with 33 touchdowns. In 2011, Griffin led Baylor (10-3) to its first 10-win season since 1980, as well as the program’s first bowl victory in 19 years. Griffin graduated from Copperas Cove (Texas) High School and set numerous high school and college track and field records. He was born in Japan, where his parents were stationed for the military.

“We are looking forward to working with Robert, as well as the rest of the quarterbacks on our roster,” Jackson said. “We have a lot of work to do to prepare to be the best QB room in the NFL and we look forward to the challenge that lies ahead.”

I feel like as a team we probably had that discussion with him.

So if he signed here knowing we are leaning towards a QB. Then either he's using us as a reclamation project for his career to then go somewhere else, or he feels like this is his "last chance"

I think the only way this impacts McCown is if the plan IS to draft a QB early. Just a guess.

So could we possibly be looking at:

1. RG3
2. Goff/Wentz
3. McCown

It was pretty clear the Kap thing didn't make sense and was coming from SF or Kap's agent from the get go.

If we (please DON'T) draft a QB with our first pick, then I really hope that your 2. & 3. are flip-flopped.

It's a two year deal.

RGIII was released, so this signing doesn't affect compensatory picks.

Honestly, I like McCown. I think he's probably performed the best (definitely top 3) of the QBs we've had since '99... but he's not the long-term answer, and the need to have him on the team is considerably less IMO with Hue Jackson as coach than it was with Pettine as coach.

Of course, I'd love to still have Kevin O'Connell around... but I could see us moving on from McCown. Denver would be a great fit.

I do too. I bet we take Wentz.

It does if we add a draft pick in the process.

Draft picks are gold to an analytics based front office, and a QB who is fast approaching 40 is not.

Welcome to the Browns RG3. Hope you survive the experience.

Also, I do not think that this signing does anything to impact our QB plans as far as the draft is concerned. I fully expect that we will go QB at #2. Maybe Wentz ....

Gil Brandt ‏@Gil_Brandt 44m44 minutes ago
One of the best pro days I've ever witnessed. Wentz reminds me of Joe Flacco. He had 2 55-yard passes that were as pretty as I've seen.

I agree. The two year deal allows the Browns to move on from him fairly easily. Ideally, RGIII has a solid year this year and we can trade him in the next offseason.

On a side note, Mr. McCown, please pack your belongings and head to the lobby.

I like this, I'm not sure he is the answer but at least our QB situation is more interesting.

I think if we were/are targeting a specific QB at #2, this signing doesn't change that.

They better. Otherwise they aren't doing everything they can to get it right this time. I don't see this having any impact on drafting a QB at #2. Even Hackenberg will be gone by the 32nd pick.

This is kind of what Seattle did. Get as many possible solutions as possible and hope one turns out. I wouldn't be shocked if we drafted a QB at #2 and then another one later in the draft.

Not sure what t think. I have not paid a lot of game attention to RGIII. I have no problem with the signing but I agree with the guys who think JM is still the starter, at least for now. My biggest problem with JM is he holds it too long so we will see how he looks with our OL changes.

Regarding drafting a QB at 2, I would only be slightly surprised. I wonder if the FO is thinking the QB they prefer from the big 3 available in the draft, might fall to 5-8 and would they look to trade down and still be able to get him, plus gain a pretty high additional pick in the process.

In my opinion the plan is for McCown to be the starter and if RG3 progresses enough to Hue's liking then eventually he'll take over but until RG3 shows he's ready for the job he'll be the #2 QB and whatever rookie QB we draft won't see the field at all this season.

McCown is not going to be on the team.
