Actually, yes, it could be explained better than that. A lot better than that.
Let's take the race concerns out of it, and make it a constitutional issue. Because you have to pay to acquire valid photo ID, this means you are conducting a poll tax. This is unconstitutional through the 24th amendment. I fully support voter ID laws and think we should make them as strict as needed, but that means we must provide means to get valid photo ID without having to pay for one. Otherwise you are disenfranchising poor voters, who have just as much right to vote as someone who can afford the photo ID cost. In Ohio the cost to renew your drivers license is $25, and about $8 for an ID card. If we made the ID card available without payment then it would be constitutionally valid to enforce ID laws.

I was under the impression that State Photo ID was free while a drivers license costs you.
If not, I say Photo ID should be free!

Yeah, you have to pay a fee for a state ID. License obviously does too.

good luck with those voter ID laws. Can you, or someone else, explain to me what is wrong with needing an i.d. to vote? I just don't see an issue with it. When I vote, I walk in. The ladies running the polling station say "Hey, Arch, good to see you. I need your i.d." Believe it or not, I bought some beer 2 days ago. Cashier asked me for my i.d. Can't buy certain otc meds without an i.d. Can't cash a check without an i.d. What's the problem with having a valid state i.d. to be able to vote? I don't get it. In Ohio, even if you don't drive, you can get a valid, state i.d. for something like $7 - and it's good for 4 years. So, why is having a valid i.d. to be able to vote a bad thing? I got carded buying super glue at WMart last week. I couldnt believe it.

Agreed. I get what you're saying. But wow, $8 for a state id that is valid for 4 years - that comes out to $2 per year. So, okay, we make it free (which means others pay), next argument will be "oh, but I can't get to the place to get my free id." Regardless, I FULLY support voter i.d. requirements, and I simply can't understand the thought process of anyone that doesn't.

Maybe they thought you were going to give it to your wife to use as chapstick? Anyway, there are SO many things you need an i.d. for, and somehow rich, poor, whatever, they manage to i.d. themselves. Never hear a word about i.d. until it comes to voting, and then it's all "oh, the poor can't......"

A voter registration ID is free and completely valid. It varies by state. Indiana for example has strict photo ID laws to vote and their state issued photo ID is $20.

Why don't they just require a social security card. Can't have one without being a citizen, and as far as I know they are free.

well since we're fine with referring to him as hitler.
by your logic, i shouldn't be concerned with 13 terrorist.
i'm concerned with Trump killing 4 million colored americans.
that's gonna suck. Don't gas me, bro. I have already "Gassed" more than 4 million folks myself. Of course they were people of all different races.

Clem,
I think Authoritarianism in America is certainly a topic needing discussion (unfortunately it doesn't appear much of that has happened here)... but this article IMO is poor starting point because the premise is basically that it's a Right wing machination and Trump's popularity is only now pulling the cloak off of it. This isn't to say the GOP hasn't had their contributions, but the Dems have an equal contribution (and some could argue a greater one) to authoritarianism... things like more regulations, more laws, increased taxes or penalties to regulate behavior, mandating citizens to do things like the individual mandate in Obamacare... all these things contribute to authoritarianism. In everything I mentioned people try to associate altruistic reasons for them, yet it still doesn't change the fact that each of those takes away an individuals liberty and freedom. And actions aside, look at the rhetoric of the current President. Some point out that he's signed very few Executive Orders and while that is true, the fact remains that he has often stated that he would act unilaterally on a variety of topics if Congress did not act (or sometimes more precisely act in a way HE thinks they should). The problem with that is he implicitly recognizes that there are actions that belong in the realm of Congress. Saying those things is a clear disregard for the Separation of Powers, the Constitutional mechanism to curtail authoritarianism.
And to add balance to my post, the GOP often contributes to this by pulling the "homeland security" and "we gotta combat the terrorists at all costs" cards. People think that it's only issues of race and sexual orientation that are Civil Rights issues yet I'd submit that things like the Patriot Act, laws passed in the annual National Defense Authorization Act have done more to curtail our Civil Rights as citizens collectively than any individual incident in regards to race or orientation.

I would too... although I'm not sure they have a subset that is analogous to the subset discussed in this article. Logic dictates that they must. Far-Left Occupy-type anarchists, perhaps?

Who knows? The left absolutely has theirs. By the strictest definition of authoritarian... the right is being led to fear the outsiders, the Muslims, the immigrants, etc. the left is seeking authoritarian leadership because it fears the insiders.. stop the 1%, they are the cause of all of your problems.. then you have the climate change alarmists who have all but admitted, at the UN level, that climate change is about much more than environmental concerns, it is viewed as the greatest chance in centuries to use it as a means to level the economic playing field around the world and bring down those high and mighty nations and corporations and raise up the underdeveloped portions of the world.. Mandate change, punish those who won't change in line with you.. that's authoritarianism.. and the left wants it just as badly as any Trump supporter, they have just defined a different enemy that they need protected from.

Today we see a "can-do" Nation becoming a "You can't do that" Nation. You can't do that, you can't say that, you can't have that, you can't make that much, Nation. Political Correctness and Safe Speech Zones over Free Speech for all. As has always been the case, the Left cries and points a finger at exactly what they are doing themselves such as "Authoritarianism" while pushing their own brand of authoritarianism.
