I'm actually really pumped about this opportunity for I. Campbell. Prototype heavy hitting safety that embraces contact. His coverage skills should improve and probably already has. I recall a decent amount of plays up near the line of scrimmage too.

I like the kid's upside. I really do.

Anyone find it ironic that Gilbert is still on the team, and Whitner is not? lol...

Personally, I got tired of Whitner bashing his teammates to the media. Keep it in house.

Come game day, that's what guys like Whitner and Dansby are for. NOT saying those guys lacked effort, but their jobs as leaders is to get that effort from the others. Not so sure I saw it.

Both guys were positive leaders. The one thing I can say about last year's team is that they didn't quit. They got beat a lot, but they played hard all the way through the season. That is one of the reasons I was okay w/retaining Pet. The team did not quit.

I think some posters are being overly generous when they say Whitner only had a few plays that stick in everyone's heads.. to me he started the season off pretty slow and with poor tackling but he did improve as the season went on. In any event, that's a matter of opinion.

That was me who said that. Two things:

1. I was replying to a poster who called him a scrub and talking about how terrible he was. You did not mention that some posters were being overly critical of the guy. That's revealing in--and of--itself, considering fewer people are praising him than bashing him.

2. Yes, it is a matter of opinion, but regarding player evaluation, I trust my evaluations over almost all on this board. Arrogant? Perhaps. Accurate? Would you deny it?

In regards to player evals, I'm not going to go in to a tit for tat pissing match, but I will stand solid behind my statement that it was more than just a few plays... try a few plays per game at the outset of the season. I will also stand solidly behind the rest of that paragraph where I give him credit for getting it together and playing well as the season wore on. I thought that part of my post refuted the bashers as equally as my post refuted the claim of only a few plays.

Obviously Hawkins is part of the draft-day trade that will happen between St. Louis and Cleveland.

Aaron Donald for Andrew Hawkins? If they say no then I will accept Robert Quinn.

Why in the world would the Rams trade either a starting DT or DE for a slot WR? never happen.

The Rams need a wide receiver, we need everything. Perfect match.

Did we cut Andy Lee?

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

A lot of criticism of the "late" release of Whitner but:

Pitt just released Cortez Adams
Ari just released Marion Grice
NE just released Ishmaa'lly Kitchen and Chris Jones

That should put to rest the Browns front office "doing him wrong" or "not knowing what they are doing.

Admittedly, I questioned the timing of the move. I think it was Deputy that suggested that the release might have been because the team was attempting to trade him. That's definitely possible. I'll add one more--- to give Hue enough time to watch his tape and see if he was worth keeping vs giving I. Campbell a shot. Hell, this team could be pretty bad next year...why not find out what we have?

At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

I'm not saying this as anything more than a guess but he was released at the same time players usually get their physicals as well. Same time we cut Ifo.

Crazy that it looks like Kitchen's career is over. He played in two games last year (one for the Lions, one for the Patriots) and now is cut before mini-camp even starts. I didn't think he was good, but I thought he was serviceable.

I've posted the images here before, but in that Bengals game, Manziels first start......Kitchen got so blown up, for the entire game, it was pathetic. He was getting literally pushed 10 yards off the ball. Itt was pathetic and we got rocked.

Edit: Found it, this was a touchdown run.

Didn't he have a broken leg?

He didn't. The broken leg game was the last game of the season.

They cut him when it made sense for them. Football's a business on both sides. They didn't owe Whitner anything but the guaranteed money he's still getting. They could have milked some mentorship out of him and then cut him in the preseason. Whitner wasn't bad last season, but I'm not sure he was living up to his contract either.

Whitner would have been the highest paid SS in the NFL if we'd kept him. His $8.45 million would have been almost 1.5 million more than Kam Chancellor this year.

NFL Salary Rankings- Safety

Whitner was credited with 3 forced fumbles, 1 INT, and 8 passes defensed while he was with the Browns.

He appeared to me to be slowing down some. He was still a good player, but I don't think his value on the field equaled the value of his contract.

Do we know if they tried to restructure?

If they tried to get him to agree to a pay cut and reduced role, and he declined, the move would make even more sense. I'm not saying it happened, but I could see how an increased focus on analytics could lead there.
