What was the motive for the execution style slaying of 8 members of the same Ohio family in four different locations?

Piketon is in the middle of nowhere. It wasn’t some sort of deranged family member (there’d already be an All Points Bulletin).

I don’t think this fits a “drug related” killing. Not in Piketon. Not a whole family in different locations.

It wasn’t random.

I can’t fathom a motive.

Southern Ohio is reeling.

Someone in the witness protection program got outed and they went after the entire family.

Tell ya what.

As extraordinarily unlikely as that is, it fits the resources, commitment, and motive to pull this off.

Someone was certainly sending a message. What is was related to I don't know. I'm betting the one to whom the message was meant for is still alive to live the horror. Somebody in that family who survived/was not targeted knows the message.

Of course the local enforcement officials were overwhelmed.

Information from the local sheriff:

"Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader, said none of the victims — all shot in the head — had committed suicide, leading investigators to strongly suspect that they were killed by someone still on the loose."

None of the victims comitted suicide. Investigators "strongly suspect" the shooter is on the loose.

Really? I'm not a forensic expert, but I'd go with that too.

Give CSI Appalachia a break, they just got their Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass in the mail last week.

Actually they're probably already on it. I think this one is worthy of federal assets.

The FBI has to take over. The witness protection program is federal after all.

I've been to Piketon., Visited the uranium enrichment facility there.. The town is very small. I just can't imagine what could have caused anyone to go berserk like that...

Yeah, they were saying on 610 all day yesterday that they did pop the kids almost up till the press conference.

But they did pop the kids mother, while one of the kids was in bed right next to her.

I can't even imagine...

Now that makes me wonder. If it was found out that somebody was stealing uranium and the Family was involved, then I can see why.

That wasn't berserk. That was methodical. If they were all shot 'execution style' there was more that one assailant for crowd control. This looks to me an effort to wipe out conspirators or witnesses.

I was looking at a Piketon police blotter, and there appears to be quite a bit of drug activity in that area - methamphetamine and heroin. It may or may not be related, but it seems more likely than a uranium smuggling caper gone bad. Besides, I would think the security at a uranium enrichment site would be crazy good.

Could be (at a very high level). This wasn't for a couple pounds of pot.

Somehow there's a family connection. Obviously this was an organized execution of several related people in different locations. Were they all involved in a major drug distribution network?

If this is drug-related there's bound to be a drug factory nearby.

But why in such a podunk area. Why not a Cincinnati suburb?

I suppose the boondocks is a great place for a drug factory. Distribution of large quantities of methamphetamine and heroin is no problem by car.

I agree. This isn't your garden variety 1k to 10k hit.
This, I think would start out at least 6 figures. A team of 4-6. It would be interesting to know if this was a house to house or a coordinated effort. I think it would just about have to be a total effort of a team, with the way alarms and phones are. I bet the team is already out of the country. I don't think we'll ever know the whole story.

Not much to explain really, the way Rocky laid it out in the first post I just filled in a possible scenario that fit. You know, someone turns on the mob, they find out where they are hiding and in revenge take out the entire family but leave the little kids.

Now I did just get this update on my phone, Fox News.

Why kill so many family members in different locations. It should be easy to determine the motive.

It's unlikely all 8 victims, in four different locations had to be executed. (eg. "They could all identify "Mr. Big" - they all had to die)

My initial impression was that this was drug related. Today they announced 3 grow sites were found. Too early for mature plants, but there could have been a big chunk of money there for the grow ops. The beating before the execution may have been somebody working their way to the cash stash.

Just my guess at what happened from what we know. This sure is a terrible thing and I hope they catch them quickly.

By it's very definition, this is "organized crime".

The killers knew exactly where to go and obviously commit the killings so they didn't get caught.

For your information IRE, they will undoubtedly make a movie about this. I wouldn't be surprised if writers are already on the story-line and waiting to write the final chapters.

So food for thought as the swirling rumors of Marijuana growing operations whirl around this story... if pot was legalized, would we be reading this story?

I am sorry Arch but you must be making this up. Swish has assured me his marijuana purchases have never lead to the deaths of anyone like with hard drugs.

As long as it's kept illegal and you create an environment where Mexican drug cartels are involved, there will be violence. Even though we have no idea if that was the motive here yet.

Firstly, you have no idea if this was the motive.

Secondly, only the people who committed the murder are guilty of it. Which I never said differently.

Thirdly, if this nation was not so dead set against keeping marijuana illegal, the circumstances would not be such that this type of thing occurs.

Fourthly, if our law enforcement could actually enforce the laws concerning marijuana that were on the books, this kind of thing would not occur.

You see, a part of the problem is we have people making laws that are simply not enforceable. I don't blame that on law enforcement, I blame that on people making such laws.

Now you can sit there on your high horse spreading lies if you will. The fact is, the war on drugs was officially started in the early 70's. To date, there are more drugs available now than there were then. Something isn't working. No matter how hard you try to deny that, the facts are evident.
