I bought some lights to play around with for night photography. I'd go outside, but the conditions are less than optimal at the moment.

Absolutely gorgeous day up here in Alaska. Mid 30s, sunshine, and no wind! I took the camera out, and I got these shots.

Just want to share my world with all of you.

Currently I'm on vacation in Dallas, Texas. Took yesterday to snap some pictures of some scream machines. Today I'll do more of the same, but here's one of the shots from yesterday.

That's a great shot.

Well, I finally broke down and upped my game with some new gear. Canon 7d mkii, a Sigma 150-600 sport lens, and gimbal mounts for the tripod and monopod. First major upgrades in a loooong time. I also popped for the Creative Cloud (Photoshop/Lightroom) subscription, but a quick look doesn't appear a whole lot different than the CS5 I have now.

I've only been out a couple times, but the focus speed, image stabilization and high ISO performance are blowing me away right now. I can now get shots earlier and later in the day that were impossible with my old gear. 10 frames per second will really help with the birds in flight pics to get the shots with the head not being hidden by a wing.

Here are a couple BIF pics and a very low light evening pic. Kind of hard to tell with the size and resolution of these uploads, but I nailed the eye focus on these birds. I could have used a faster shutter speed to get more clarity on the wings, or a slower speed to get more motion blur.

I took these last weekend. Spent the weekend at the coast with my girlfriend and our dog. Had beautiful weather on Saturday. We nearly had the beach to ourselves. Spent the day in the cabin keeping the wood stove stoked in between running the dog on the beach.

Here's two more from today; there's more but I like these the best.


I got here at 9am this morning for the closer coaster in the background. Well worth waking up a little early on a vacation for.

Well, this eagle pair managed to stop and pose while working on their nest this morning:

You have a good eye and a good camera. If you don't mind critique I'd say you next need to work on composition. Rule of thirds. If you don't know it look it up and go out with your camera always thinking about it. Merely cropping an image can change its overall impact.

Don't mind critique at all and I appreciate any constructive input. I actually like how the pair is framed by nest tree, and I really don't like the degredation from cropping further...not sure what you did there, but when I crop in on that pic it doesn't look nearly as nice as your rendition. The eagle in flight is actually clipped from a larger image that has the nest tree in view...I was more concerned with folks being able see the detail in the eagle vs. the entire composition. That was probably a mistake, and that's one of the problems we face when trying to post such small dimension pics. Thanks.

I cleaned up some of the degradation within the app. Photoshop has tools too.
Post production is huge in photography. Rarely will you ever see an untouched image in print.

I shoot RAW and have been using PS for years. I'm still working the kinks out with Lightroom. I really should worry more about composition than pixel peeping....it's a sickness.

Here's some from yesterday. I visited the Dallas World Aquarium, but it's more an aviary and an aquarium. A lot of the birds fly in the open around you. Some are caged, but still a great place to take some pictures.

I took these this past summer at the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in Washington. I took a bunch of others but they're huge panoramic files. The quality won't transfer to the board so I'm not posting them. It was a beautiful day.

Got back up to Alaska after my vacation to Dallas. I got in a bit earlier, and it's an unseasonably warm day in the beginning of March. Went out to the downtown observation deck on the water, and I took some shots.

Doing a bit of a project 365. Taking a picture of myself every single day. I'm keeping a running album on my personal Facebook page. Here's my shot for today, and I really really like it.

I could've cropped it, but I like the wide angle of it all. It gives y'all a great perspective of what I see every day as I walk to work.

The wind tends to blow like a banshee during the winter; such has been the case the last few days. Finally the storm broke, and calm weather rests upon us. Got out of work, looked down at the water, and I saw a mirror stretching past the horizon. No wind creates wonderful pictures opportunities on the water. Here's a couple to share.

I invested in my last lens. I bought a Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 wide angle. I ran it through its paces today, but astrophotography with it will have to wait till later.



I know the flare might not be desirable, but I like the starburst I picked up. I should look into better hood options.

I have a Tokina 12-24 and like it a lot....yours should be an even better performer. Landscapes are tricky, but you can get some great HDR compositions with multiple exposures since the subject doesn't move. Unfortunately, I get too caught up in chasing birds and critters and don't really spend the time I should getting landscapes.

Put the wide angle through the paces even more so today! I highly recomend clicking the links. The small previews on the board can't quite to these images justice.

Truly put my Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 through the paces today. I'm amazed at what it can do on my D3300.

Great shots, especially the in the links. The colors seem accurate as it just feels lifelike and real. I especially like the first shot with the buildings. It reminds me of a simpler, basic lifestyle that I've always yearned for. I bet the people are genuine and friendly.

Our village tends to be one of the more open and accepting of outsiders. Most of our region, we're the size of Ohio, welcomes everyone with open arms. Problems do exist due to poverty. Alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence, and sexual abuse go unreported.

Just another usual beautiful weekend day out in the far reaches of Alaska.
