Damn......125 people and the ceremony was 3 hours long. Who were the commencement speakers? The entire US Senate? My class graduated 488 and it was only a little over 3 hours. Of course, this was when the diplomas were still carved in stone....... Oh, and Soup.....your mini rant about poor education might have been more effective without the misspelled words...... or was that the intent? Naw, probably just that poor education.....

Not giving the diploma is punishing the parents and family.
The kid is graduated and will get the diploma.
I agree...those things are long as it is. If the request is made to not cheer and applaud until after the ceremony, and the vast majority of the people indeed follow the rules, what makes these people so special??
Maybe the kid was the first in the family to attain the level of HS graduate...I don't know.
Just go with the program.

Babe, it depends on the school. Both my kids graduated in classes w/over 400 students. Tickets were limited. Only 4 per child. Usually, it's the parents and grandparents that attend. Sometimes a sibling.
And I can't believe that no one is talking about the air horns going off. Do you know how loud those things are. That is ridiculous. Let's face it, the school in question resorted to drastic measures only because drastic measures were called for because the majority of people did complain about the selfish assholes.
It also kills me that the people who broke the rules are the ones complaining and receiving sympathy.
You know.....this entire story is indicative of what goes in today's society. I already mentioned the driving scenerio. There are also people who double park or park in handicapped spots because they don't want to take the time to park properly or walk another 20 yards. People leave their shopping carts in parking spots because they don't want to walk 5 yards to the corral. Meanwhile, no one else can park in "their" spot. I also love when you find frozen packages in the cereal section because the "me" person changed their mind and don't want to walk "all" the way back to the frozen food section. People mutilate books after borrowing them from the library or don't return them at all. It goes on and on because people care only about themselves and not the rest of society.
You know.......if we were all considerate of each other's needs instead of just our own, this world would be a much better place and drastic rules would not need to be in place.

The graduates AREN'T the one's who "broke the rules". That's the entire premise of this very debate. You're punishing an innocent third party for the act of others.
But some advocate such nonsense.

The FACT is,these graduates have no control over others in that auditorium. It's like the cops coming and arresting you because somebody you go to school with or one oif your moronic cousins robbed a bank.
No Pit, it's the school punishing the only person THEY have any control over... Would it have made you happier and made for a better commencement if the Gestapo was standing in the aisles waiting to cart mom, dad and grandma off to jail for cheering? What recourse does the school have against the parents? None.. they have a slip of paper signed which says they won't cheer... under penalty of what?
It's a matter of respect for everybody else in the ceremony... Obviously with the signed slip and everything the "no cheering" rule was common knowledge I'm sure it was even mentioned during the ceremony to hold applause until the end... I'm sorry their daughter (and a few others) have to be made an example of but it will serve as a good example next year when hopefully parents will think twice about humiliating their child because they have no self-control....
The girl graduated, the diploma is just a piece of paper, it's not keeping her from going to college or putting HS Graduate on her resume.. . She'll get it eventually.

I am certainly not defending the people that broke the rules. I'm defending the graduate. I'd be PISSED if it was me in her place and my guests were the ones making the noise. I'd be PISSED if THIER actions resulted in a punishment for ME.
Frankly, the school would be better suited to punishing those that made the noise. Tell them that you will arrest and charge them with disorderly conduct and follow through with it.
No, it's absolutely not fair to the other kids whose names might not be heard. I graduated in a class of 500 and my ceremony was 3+ hours long too. But my ceremony wasn't hindered by inconsiderate a-holes. Yes, people cheered, but nothing that drowned out announcements. Any cheering was done strictly via clapping. Nothing loud enough to hamper the ceremony. Of course, I graduated at the JAR arena on campus at Akron U and now my alma mater uses Blossom Music Center.
And my family cheered like frickin' banshees when I graduated from Ohio State. But they also don't call each name individually. That ceremony would be 4 days long if they did that for the June graduates. LOL! I was also the first member of my Dad's family to earn a 4 year degree (still am!).

Either way, the school looks bad. I can see the judge.. "Next on the docket is Mr., Mrs., and Grandma Jones who are charged with cheering at their daughters graduation.... "

people wonder why kids don't care about education. Things like this are why.
There's a time and a place for everything Soup, at this time and this place the school expects a certain level of decorum. If you had a kid about to go up to receive the diploma you wouldn't be too happy to have the whole experience drowned out and marred by people whooping like hyenas.
yea this might have been an extreme case of hooting and hollering, but I don't think there is anything wrong if a family member or friend gives a shout out during the ceremony. I think some are overreacting here. go talk to most of the students, and I bet that the majority could care less if they recieve a shout out from the crowd. graduation is all about having a good time, and it seems the parents are the ones that are having a problem with the hooting and hollering. well, I got news for you, you're not graduating. if it's alright with the students and they see nothing wrong, than it's fine with me. after all they're the ones graduating.
I remember when I graduated from OSU, they didn't call names or anything. I picked up my degree and went home for the day.
People are making a big deal out of nothing in my opinion.

If you believe commencement is more for the students than it is for the parents.. well you're just wrong. I've been through 3 graduations of my own, high school, college, and masters... I could have cared less. High school I was anxious to get to the baseball state semi finals game we had the next day, college I was so hung over I couldn't see straight and masters I didn't even go... those graduations are for the parents.

Honestly, I'd be pissed at both, but moreso of my guests.
Frankly, I never would have signed the contract and I'd have tried to get others to follow suit and protest the ridiculousness of punishing the student for the actions of others that I have no control over.

Yes it would. Only they probably wouldn't "go to jail" but they would be removed from the ceremony.
Yes DC,punishing people who DID wrong, makes me far happier than punishing those who did NOTHING wrong.
And everyone KEEPS IGNORING one simple thing. It may NOT have been "their family" making the noise. It may have been other underclassmen or others in the crowd who simply dislike the student to cause trouble for them.
Quite simply, the school "refuses to handle THEIR responsibilty of crowd control" and instead, punishes their students for their lack of taking responsibility for handling the situation themselves.
No wonder our society is so screwed up. People actually ADVOCATE punishing innocent people for the acts of others. They actually absolve the school of their responsibility of controling the crowd and applaud punishing innocent students for the acts of others.
Our democracy isn't about punishing the innocent. Well, not untill here as of late anyway. And that's very sad.
Lesson the student learns; Even if I do everything properly,I get punished for a situation I didn't create, had no part in and wasn't my fault.
A fine message to send the youth of America.

BS! If the noisemakers weren't the family members, someone would have come forward by now to set the record straight. This incident has drawn a lot of attention. Pit, you still are missing the key point to all of this. If people would not be so selfish in the first place and instead considered the feelings of other people, we wouldn't have to come up w/stupid rules. Perhaps you are one of the selfish ones. One of the drivers who passes everyone else in the closed lane? One of the people who double park? One of the people who litter? One of the people who make false claims against insurance companies, thereby driving up our costs? So maybe you can't understand why I am sick and tired of people who think only of themselves and to hell w/everyone else. They are bullies. And I have always hated a bully. So Pit.........if you try and pass me in the closed lane, be prepared to wreck your car. I ain't letting you in. Of course, it will be my fault.................right?

They should just put sharp shooters on stands behind the stage, and if someone makes even a peep, drop em. It's sad, and the best solution I can think of is limit the number of people. My stepson graduated and we got 6 tickets. They asked us to hold the cheers till after the ceremony, and specifically said it was so that the other families could also hear THEIR childs name when it's called, and for those that may be video taping the event. A light applause was permitted, but to keep it short. For the most part it worked, but there were a couple families that someone obviously got their hands on way more than 6 tickets. Truth is no one took our tickets, you just flashed it at the door, so anyone could have went in, taken the other 5 tickets back out, and handed them to the next group and repeat till you get 20-30 people in the door. What pissed me off is people actually holding seats for people. and I don't mean their 6 seats. one lady was trying to hold 3 rows of seats (it was held at the hockey arena). She went to battle with anyone who tried to sit in those rows, finally security came and told her she could only hold 6 seats.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

So you give tickets and jail time to my children for those infractions? THEY pay my fines and do the jail time for MY wrongdoing? Oh,that's really logical.

Yes,you're so sick of it you wish to punish their children for it.

So they actually had "security" handle the obligation of the school to restore order rather than make the "students responsible" for people they have no control over? Nice to know SOME schools understand that they are responsible for crowd control. Not their students.
Sounds just a little TOO logical for some posters on this thread.

Nobody is ignoring anything Pit... her mom admitted that the family was making the noise... Don't you think the mom would be going just a bit more ballistic if it wasn't the family making the noise?
Quote:
Gayles' mother said she plans to fight the school board — in court if necessary — to get her daughter's diploma. The noise "was like three seconds. It was like, `Yay,' and that was it," Carolyn Gayles said.

Yes I do Pit.. I absolve the school. Why? Because it's a school, it's not the Republican National Convention or an abortion protest march in Washington DC... they aren't in the business of "crowd control" and they don't have the budget for crowd control and the fact that we are even talking about crowd control for a high school graduation shows you what is wrong with society Pit...
If you don't see how dragging parents out in the middle of the ceremony would be even more disruptive than the cheering, then you just don't get it... and who is going to drag them out? The vice principal? Theâ„¢algebra teacher? Then there is a scene, possibly a fight... yea, that will help maintain order...
So, I have a few suggestions: 1. They should just stop having commencement, they can just mail the diplomas home, that way they don't have to worry about crowd control or any of this... Won't that be special...
2. Or, instead of giving free tickets, they should give each kid the option to buy 6 tickets for $75 each so they can afford to hire and pay for security specialists to remove surly participants... Of course then you'll whine that the poor are being punished because they can't afford to go to their own kids graduation...
3. The sniper idea isn't bad..
4. They could hold graduation without an audience and stream it over the web so the families could watch from home on their computer... those that can afford a computer and a high speed internet connection.
5. Or they could do what they did... send a message. How much do you want to bet they won't have this problem next year? I'm sorry these few kids had to made an example of, but I believe the message was sent loud and clear and next year, parents will pipe down until everybody has been given a diploma, then they can erupt with cheer...
I applaud the school for handling the problem...

This is basicly the cops arresting you, because your brother held up a liquor store. You were at work, with GW Bush and the President can confirm you were with him at the time of the incident, but you are tossed into jail because you couldn't control your family....
Doesn't anyone understand... The person being punished is not the person who committed the crime. No matter how you twist it or spin it, the girl walking across the stage to pick up her diploma, did not commit the "crime" of cheering too loudly for herself.

I see what you are saying and I agree for the most part.
However, I don't think someone should feel the punishment for the breach of a contract in which they are not a party. I heard on the radio this morning that she won't get the diploma until she performs community service. I don't really care that she won't get her diploma until later, but it should be the people who cheered performing the community service.

Yes,DC thinks giving community service to the innocent should be some "new standard" in our society. You'll see lawsuits rather than conformity DC. And in this case? Rightfully so........................ And it was ONE mom who said that DC. They held five diploma's from five students. So,you appear to be at least 20% right about that portion of your arguement. . The school speaking......"Yes your mom is a jerk so you do community service for it kid." BRILLIANT!
