My first thought was he replaces the ST duties of Benji.. Apparently you thought the same thing.

I'm thinking this spells the end of Taylor Gabriel. And it's not that I think Taylor is just trash, but the season he had last year with the drops and etc definitely couldn't have helped him.

I think Gabriel has a chance to stick as he is a hell of a vertical threat and brings that element to this team. I felt last year with Hawk down we tried to make him a slot working underneath and it really isnt his thing. I give him 50/50 chance of sticking and improving with the scheme. Shanny did a much better job in utilizing his skillset than Flip did last year.

My guess is the new coaches will evaluate him mostly on his abilities in practice. Last year was a disaster for many players, I'm not sure how great of a tool it is in the evaluation process.

At 5'8 or 5'7, 167 lbs... I'm not sure that's the deep threat type you want to throw to. I thought he was a crisp route runner with speed, wouldn't that make him a slot WR?

Don't teams need slot receivers?

Don't teams need slot receivers? How many slot WRs does one team need though? We'll see, but I think the tape of Gabriel last year going to hurt his stock.

I always viewed Hawk as a true slot and Gabriel as an outside WR ... I think Gabriel's size makes people assume he's a slot, but he seems more effective as a guy on the perimeter IMO
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

I just remember all the feel good stories coming outta camp about him and how his route running is awesome and how Noone wanted to cover him in practice, then I see him falling down, dropping passes and etc on Sunday. He was just another guy out there getting shut down with single coverage. He's weak and got jammed on the line and never was able to recover his route.
But, an offseason with Brian Hartline and a Hue Jackson operated offense? Maybe he'll start good in camp and end the season on a good and productive note. I don't have faith in our WR core as a whole so don't think I ripping Taylor only.

Cincinnati Bengals release LB A.J. Hawk By The Sports Xchange | April 26, 2016 at 2:39 PM Linebacker A.J. Hawk was released by the Cincinnati Bengals. Hawk, signed last year as a free agent after spending nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers, was expendable when the Bengals picked up veteran Karlos Dansby to spell Vontaze Burfict. Burfict is suspended for the first three games in 2016. Releasing Hawk saves the Bengals $1.6 million against this season's cap. The 32-year-old was the fifth overall pick in the 2006 draft and is the Packers' all-time leading tackler with 1,118. He made the Pro Bowl in 2010 and was released by the Packers after undergoing ankle surgery in 2014. He was previously released by the Packers in 2011, but re-signed at a lower salary. With the Bengals in 2015, Hawk started 11 games and had 25 tackles and one sack. "A.J. was a big part of us last season as we won the division championship, and I appreciate his efforts," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement. "We're going a different direction at this point, but I've always been a fan of A.J. It has been a pleasure having him as part of our team and getting to know him and his family better." http://www.upi.com/Sports_News/2016/04/26/Cincinnati-Bengals-release-LB-AJ-Hawk/5051461695896/

I thought Hawk was going to be a lot better than he actually turned out to be. Definitely a miss by me.

He was the Packers all time leading tackler.. so not too bad.. he just didn't have the longevity I thought he would have.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...fter-four-days/Browns change their minds, cut Saalim Hakim after four days Posted by Darin Gantt on April 29, 2016, 5:13 PM EDT New York Jets v Cincinnati Bengals Getty Images Well, the Browns did take a wide receiver last night, and that was apparently enough to change their minds about another one. According to the league’s daily personnel notice, the Browns have released veteran wideout Saalim Hakim. They just signed Hakim Monday, after he had taken part in a weekend minicamp as a tryout player. He has spent time with the Jets, showing some degree of promise as a return man. But whether the addition of first-round wideout Corey Coleman had anything to do with the decision to release Hakim or not, they had a sudden change of heart.

I apparently had high hopes for Salim Hakim. I thought he was going to at least make it minicamp.

Brian Hoyer signs with Bears for $2M to be their backup QB. Not bad, for wearing a ballcap and carrying a clipboard - congrats to Brian.

Its funny he'll be reunited with Dowell Loggains (Mr Wreck This League messenger). I always thought of Loggains as a Johnny guy, when Hoyer was here. If he does play he'll have some decent WRs to throw to; Alshon Jeffries, Eddie Royal, Kevin White. He'll do okay.

“We want to have a program that is sustainable,” Brown said. “As short as these guys’ careers are, if you are building with players whose careers are half over, it is hard to sustain. We do believe in adding players through free agency, and you’ll see us do that, but we do feel like the foundation of what we need to do is acquiring talent through the draft. For a lot of reasons, but primarily because we want players who will be developed and molded by our head coach in our system, and who will be here for a long period of time.” http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2016/05/04/cleveland-browns-nfl-draft-hue-jackson-paul-depodesta-sachi-brown

Someone should tell him the only way they can be there for a 'long period of time' is by re-signing them.

Carolina drafted CBs in rounds 2, 3 and 5.
Also, I read that Boykin will have now been on 4 teams in 10 months. The guy might have an attitude issue.

Tennessee Titans waive Zach Mettenberger 107 By Marc Sessler Around the NFL Writer Published: May 16, 2016 at 09:57 a.m. Updated: May 16, 2016 at 02:09 p.m. The Tennessee Titans have dumped a quarterback. The team on Monday waived backup Zach Mettenberger, their sixth-round draft pick from 2014. After playing second fiddle to Marcus Mariota last season, Mettenberger was whispered about as a candidate for release after the Titans signed veteran Matt Cassel to a one-year deal in March. Those whispers have turned into truth. It marks a swift free fall for quarterback once seen by the organization as "a poor man's Tom Brady." Mettenberger, though, was chosen by Tennessee's former general manager and coach -- the new regime saw something less majestic. Sporting an 0-10 record in spot starts over two seasons, the former LSU star quickly became an afterthought once Mariota was taken with the No. 2 overall pick in 2015. Mettenberger, 24, sports a big arm and prototypical size -- he's 6-foot-5 and 224 pounds -- but he was comprehensively inconsistent in his second season. Throwing for just 5.6 yards per attempt in four starts last year, Mettenberger turned the ball over in big spots before he was essentially yanked in Week 17 for Alex Tanney. Here's where we remind you that Cassel isn't about to save the day, either, if Mariota again succumbs to injury. The aging veteran was a disaster in Dallas last season and offers little inspiration at this stage in his career. As for Mettenberger, he's bound to find another job before long. Linky

Some on here have been wanting Mettenberger for awhile. He's done nothing good as a pro and just cut because a team signed Matt Cassel (who was one of the worst QBs I've ever seen last year). He also had character issues in college (which caused him to drop in the drafting).
No thanks.

I was one of the guys that thought he was worth taking a shot on. I was apparently completely wrong (shocker, lol!). I recall a number of folks telling me he wasn't worth a 7th rounder, but I thought he could have been worth taking in the 3rd.... I'm glad I didn't do the picking!!
All that being what it is, I expect that this FO is already doing some digging and research; Hue is probably looking at film with the QB coach.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

He had 3 things that were a concern, back in the draft days .... a really long delivery, he was not accurate, other than throwing to great receivers in their general area, and he stunk under pressure. His Wrs were some guy names Odell Beckham Jr and Jarvis Landry, so just throwing in their general direction usually worked. His RBs were some guys names Jeremy Hill, and Alfred Blue.
He also moved like his feet were stuck in hardened cement.
He had such talent that he just had to throw the ball in the general vicinity of his receivers, or hand the ball off, and he was good. I seem to recall that his OL was pretty darn good as well. The talent around him was able to overcome his flaws at the college level. Obviously this was not the case in the pros.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I was a big fan. He's probably been cut because they don't want a young QB for fans to yell out for if the franchise QB struggles.
That being said, they had no takers of even a 7th rounder for him or they wouldn't have cut him.
