I think the ST squads will be much improved this coming season.
Look for guys like Melila Purcell, Chase Pittman, Darnell Dinkins, Mason Unck and Brandon MacDonald to name a few to be leading tacklers on our KO and Punts. Our KO & PR teams should be more exciting with Cribbs and Steptoe also. I really feel that these units will play a very big role in our winning some tough games in a very tough schedule. JMHO

I disagree. Maybe the talent is improved, but losing Rosburg will hurt. He is among the best ST coaches in the NFL, from everything that I've read. He has had the ST units consistently in the top 1/3 of the NFL while he was here. I think we may see a step back.

Punt returner is the big ? Northcutt sucked as a WR, but he was one of the better returners.

I dunno how we got rid of our special-teams coach, was he not re-signed or fired? We should have done what it took to get him though. Our special teams hasn't been that bad, it's probably our brightest point between Offense, Defense, and Special Teams.

I think Cribbs might start both. Everyone's said Cribbs can't do punt returns, he isn't good at this or that. Forget that, honestly, Cribbs is the man. The guy's only getting better. I think Joshua Cribbs is electrifying and fearless on kickoffs. And I think he might be able to be those same things on punt returns as well (Dangerous on punt returns is good i guess, as long as you waive off the correct kicks). if he can catch punts consistantly.

Last year he was so much better than his rookie year, imagine what he might do his third year. More intelligent at the positions, maturing, he might not have the fastest straight line speed, but he's gotta moves and a warrior mentallity. While he probably isn't as good as Cutt at it, Cutt was a lot better than given credit for. One of the better in the league for sure at punt returning.

With that I say, Steptoe will be on the practice squad and Cribbs will be our kick returner and punt returner.

Rosburg's contract was up. I've read the Browns wanted him back, but he wanted a coach with more job security, so he went to Atlanta with a new coach.

I, also, think Cribbs will end up returning both punts and KOs. I know that there are a good deal of people on here that have reservations about him handling punts after how he did last year. The thing to remember is that he basically had no real experience at that job before Northcutt got hurt. I think he can become at least league average at it, while not eating an extra roster spot, and while signed long-term and filling the hole long-term.

Atlanta made Rosburg an offer and he took it.

I'd have to disagree... the loss of the best ST coach in the league is going to hurt us big time. The ST players are the worst players on your team. We have had phenominal ST with a team that has had one winning season since the rebirth. Our ST success was not because of the quality of the players but the coaching. I think we are going to take a step back in that department... Hopefully, it's not a big step b/c I love the ST unit.

Still waiting for the first ST coach to block a punt or plant a K.O returner.
Don't expect too much or too little this season...ST may be as good as before- even better.

I'm not really interested in how people might perceive them individually, what matters to me most is how they perform collectively. JMHO

Forgot about us losing Jerry Rosburg though.......that certainly will hurt us. The only good thing that I saw that I like re new coach Ted Daisher is that he did a short stint (1 year) with the Philadelphia Eagles. I have a lot of respect for that organization, they have very good coaches and football minds. But, on the other side of the coin, to play the devil's advocate, I wonder why Daisher's term was so short. This is an area I feel that a more experienced NFL man with contacts who are experienced in building teams would be of great value in our FO. JMHO

Speaking of RAC's coaching staff out of the 19 coaches......we have 8 brand new coaches to the family plus Rob Chudzinski who is serving his 1st year as our OC, and was formerly our TE coach. Talk about a house cleaning, whole new philosophy and system! We definitely are a team in transition and still growing. I really hope this group stablizes and bonds for the good of players and team. I'm more intersted in solid field position every single kickoff and punk... In comparison who cares about a bloked punt?

If Cribbs is our punt returner this year, then I think we're in real trouble.

Being a good kick returner vs. a good punt returner is apples to oranges. When catching a kickoff, you have a chance to look up field, get a head of steam and set up your blocks in order try and create a crease if one is not there. This is what Cribbs is good at, straight-line speed, good vision, and an ability to slip through tight creases. If you stop to make a cut/move on a kickoff, your dead. Trust me, I learned the hard way with some broken ribs.

A punt returner on the other hand. Needs a lightning quick first step to make the first guy miss (one always comes free), then the acceleration to get through the first wave. There is no getting a head of steam.

Cribbs isn't the kind of player to be a punt returner. If he is back there, it's to fair catch.

I won't disagree with your thought,,,,but I don't know how much impact D-linemen like Purcell and Pittman are going to have on kick returns and coverage....they might block on PATs or something.

Peen, re Purcell and Pittman....I was more thinking of their roles on either KO or Punts as guys going up the middle of the field who hopefully through experience and time learn to take on those wedge blockers. Chase Pittman, has a very mean streak in him and loves to hit according to the press. Purcell is supposed to have some fairly good speed, quickness and moves, he might be able to block a few punts here and there, although that's usually done by the outside personnel players. JMHO

I do realize that it is going to take some drafts and time to find all the pieces but, I feel for the first time that we are beginning to be on the right track and have come a long way from those early draft years..........thank goodness.

And my point is that the ST coach is more of a motivational leader than strategy guru....the coach does not tackle or block...his players do. The players may change just as the coach may change. They play he talks!
