I have a buddy that is an english major in college and he can't spell worth crap.
I find it kind of amusing.
I have always been pretty good at spelling but haven't always been the brightest crayon in the box. Of course I never applied myself as much as I should have.

Show me a post that Einstein of Fitzgerald made on a message board before you call it a flawed analogy(not that you really can). I'm guessing that if either of them had had computers and spent leisure time using a message board for entertainment they wouldn't have cared so much about how they spelled since both admitted it wasn't something they did well.
If someone here were writing something to be published, yes spelling and grammar would be important. As it is we're shooting the breeze for fun not writing the theory of relativity. For some pointing out others' mistakes is entertaining I think that's sad and I find it entertaining to make that point.
I still contend that bad spelling is not a sign of lack of intelligence it's just a sign that some things are more important to some people than others.

Diam you got mentioned on the other thread and my comment was Diam is can't spell? I hadn't noticed You are a good illustration though because you do seem to have some degree of intelligence and you really are an atrocious speller.

Some very intelligent people aren't good spellers. Some people are naturally good spellers, they don't really have to be highly intelligent.

Man that is kind of bad, not knowing how when and when not to capitalize names and establishments. I thought that was a given and that everyone knew that, I guess not.

You can almost always find an exception to a rule if you have billions and billions of possibilities to wade through. Frankly I'm appalled that so many businesses feel that proper spelling and grammar are unimportant. 2 examples: I went to the bank, and in their commercial area hung a sign that read: "Stop! Look! Who's receipts are you handing out!!!!" One spelling mistake and one punctuation mistake in one small sign alone would be ridiculous, but this was a bank. One that wants my business, money, and accounts .... yet can't spell and punctuate. Really inspiring, especially when I stop and remember that this is the bank holding my mortgage. I went to the store on my way home from work, and there was a sign on the door for dog treats that read: "Their your best friend, don't they deserve the best treats?" Maybe I'm just the oddball, because I proofread ads for many years, and I notice these types of errors, but poor grammar and spelling on signs representing the business would be unacceptable if it were my business.

And I think that a person who is about to graduate from high school should be able to spell the word "congratulations." It's a word that is spelled incorrectly on here quite often actually, as is the word "lose."
What about "accept" and "except", and "sale" and "sell"?
They're, there, and their are other homonyms that drive me nuts when I see them misused.
"Loose" instead of "lose" is another one that just kills me. All someone has to do is sound the damn thing out.

Feel free to make the corrections if it bothers you. There's a period at the end and a couple of apostrophes that's all I felt necessary. I don't like commas so you can have all mine. Apparently you didn't read the part of the thread where I said my grammar is not always perfect. That's why I don't feel the need to constantly correct others.
Btw there's really no need to yell.

My question is, how do kids get out of school without knowing basic stuff? Like the difference between "set" and "sit"? I was in a pretty pricey store one day and on a chair was a handwritten sign that said: "No setting." Things like that...simple things...bother me. Can anyone explain this? Shouldn't this be taught (not to mention TAUGHT) before these people get out and join the workforce?

Frankly I'm not talking about spelling for business. In business it's important to use a dictionary and/or proofreader to ensure that spelling and grammar are correct. In that case it's shows a lack of profssionalism to not take the time to check and check again.
Even in that case the inability to spell doesn't mean that the person writing lacks intelligence. They may excell in other areas such as math or science and don't see the point in memorziing something they can easily look up.
In the case of a message board I don't see why it's necessary to point out others' mistakes. It's not like any of us are perfect.

Because people have for years and it will continue as long as there are people. This is nothing new I know plenty of older people who graduated some even from college who can't spell or use proper grammar without a lot of editing help. Some people just don't think spelling and grammar are as important as others do. We all have our pet peeves it doesn't mean we all have to point them out to everyone.
As I said to Ytown if it's a business grammar and spelling should be checked. However for the general public writing at their own leisure if the message is clear even with a word or two mispelled (or no commas) what's the big whoop?

Whether you agree or not, spelling IS important. If it's important in the "business" world, as you say, why is it not in the "general" world?
Like it or not, consistent misspellings DO reflect on a person......I didn't start it, I didn't end it, I'm just telling you how it is. And it's not just spelling incorrectly - it's the misuse of punctuation, run on sentences, using the wrong tense of a word, etc.
Let it slide here, there, etc, then pretty soon, it won't matter anywhere. It DOES reflect on a person.
I make mistakes, you make mistakes, we all do. But to defend someone for that is wrong. To attack them for that is also wrong, but pointing out a mistake may help that person. If you're one that would rather let little things slide into big things, great.
And before you chew me out, look at my first post in this thread, please.

Spelling DOESN'T make a difference to everyone or there wouldn't be so many people who mispell words. So we disagree on that and no amount of captialized words is going to change either of our opinions. What I'd like to know do you really want someone pointing it out in public when you make a mistake? I've always foudn that people are more likely to take constructive critism if they're not being called out in fact of everyone.
Also back to the original point if bad spelling gives someone the impression that a person is dumb it isn't necessarily the case..

Well, there are enough anal retentive people around here who disect every word. So "to them" there seems to be "some" importance, wheather they understand and comprehend the message or not.

I really should post because I have hard time spelling things online. In school in spelling I always got 100% on all my spelling tests it was one of my bests subjects, but I had to study the words and make up things to remember how to spell them. The problem is I forgot how to spell the words afterwards so it was almost pointless. I can spell right but it takes me time when you forget how to spell a word. I have been having trouble lately spelling words and always have when using them in real life situations. My grammar skills are also bad and is something i need to improve on.

Everyone is human, you are correct. However, when someone consistently uses the wrong word, or the wrong tense, it does reflect on that person. Am I being "nitpicky"? I don't know.
And no, I am not "judging" someone. Not based on a misspelling here and there. However, after a certain time, when someone constantly misspells or misuses the same words, over and over and over, it does make me wonder. If it doesn't to you, that's fine.
However, and this is to you pit, you seem to be big on everyone learning the english language (immigrants), yet here you are condoning not using it properly? I don't follow that. It's kind of like ebonics. Great in theory, but go try to get a job with ebonics.

And let me make this clear: A misspelling here or there is fine. I do it, you do it, we all do it. But consistent misuse is just wrong. 1 misspelling can be credited to the fingers getting ahead of, or behind, the brain. No problem. Consistent misspelling? Shows lack of caring, and peraps worse. IMO!!

Quite simply,I expect people who wish to "live in this country" to work at being able to "communicate" in English. That doesn't take being a perfectionist at spelling.
It takes comprehending English and basic writing skills in English. English is a language that makes little sense in the grand scheme of things. Our words are derived from several languages from Latin,to Spanish,to French and quite a few more.
That's why we have all thos silly "accept when it ends in Y","i after e accept when....". It's just silly. ie....scissors? Knife? I mean I guess one could become an English major or use spell check all of the time.
But I'm quite human and have no problem permiting people to see that I make a few mistakes. Sometimes there are "exceptions" where I just spell things wrong to get on people's nerves as well.
