Odell Thurman Accused of Assault

Last Update: Jun 5, 2007 12:32 PM
No charges yet but more trouble may be on the horizon for embattled Bengals Linebacker Odell Thurman.

Two men in Thurman's hometown of Monticello, Georgia claim he committed assault this weekend.

The men say Odell Thurman knocked one of the men to the ground outside a house party early Sunday morning, and his brother Willie Thurman placed a gun in the man's mouth.

The other man claims Thurman kicked and punched him.

The men filed complaints with police the day after the party.

Right now a hearing is scheduled for Friday where a magistrate will go over the case with Odell Thurman and his brother Willie before deciding whether criminal charges should be filed.

Thurman missed all of last season after a suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

While serving that suspension he was arrested for driving drunk.

I do wonder what those two men were doing prior to getting thier butts kicked, Were they trying to rob thurmams house, selling drugs on the property, ??? just wanna toss out the innocent until proven guilty thing, and lets hear both sides, now if they were Ravens than we'd convict and toss the key away.

Here's a link to a court doc on this. Not looking good for Odell. Could he be Goodell's first to get a permanent vacation?

LOL, man, that police report should go under the "spelling and intelligence" thread. I've seen 3rd grade essays written better.

If it is proven that they left and then returned with the gun, then that makes this that much worse, it shows premeditation.

Only saving grace Odell has it that he wasn't cited as the one with the gun. But assault and trespassing while already on thin ice, and most likely still on probation, isn't good.

Suspended Bengals Linebacker Odell Thurman Accused of Assault in Georgia
Jun 5, 3:13 PM (ET) Email this Story

By TERRY KINNEY
CINCINNATI (AP) -Suspended Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman has been accused of kicking and hitting two men in his Georgia hometown during the weekend. He has not been charged with a crime, but a magistrate will hear testimony Friday to determine if charges should be filed.

The NFL suspended Thurman for the first four games of 2006 after he skipped a drug test. The suspension was extended to a full season following his arrest on a drunken driving charge in September. Thurman is one of nine Cincinnati players to be arrested in the past year.

Two men filed a complaint Sunday with police in Monticello, Ga., southeast of Atlanta, accusing Thurman of assaulting them early Sunday following an argument at a home, Jasper County Chief Magistrate Ken Jackson said Tuesday. The men accused Thurman's brother, Willie Thurman, of threatening them with a gun.

Because the allegations were not reported quickly and police were unable to conduct an immediate investigation, Jackson said, a county magistrate will hear testimony Friday to determine if anyone should be charged.

Messages seeking comment were left with Odell Thurman's agent and with the NFL.

Thurman pleaded no contest to the drunken driving charge in February. Last Friday, a judge in Cincinnati suspended all but six days of a 90-day sentence and ordered Thurman to serve those six days at a treatment center.

Thurman played two seasons at Georgia and was drafted by Cincinnati in the second round of the 2005 draft. He led the Bengals in tackles that season with 148.

this is great. did anyone see the clips from the presser with marvin lewis where he got all huffy when reporters wanted to talk about the bengals runins with the law? i saw a clip on espn, and marvin basically cut off a reporter and brushed off his question by saying that no bengals had been arrested this year, so why did they keep bringing this up. you could tell he was really agitated about always having to talk about it, but you reap what you sow when you draft those types of guys. i know he hasn't been arrested yet, but i would love to see the press conference with marvin if thurman does get arrested.

Suspended Bengals LB Odell Thurman accused of assault in Georgia
By TERRY KINNEY, Associated Press Writer
June 5, 2007

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Suspended Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman has been accused of kicking and hitting two men in his Georgia hometown during the weekend.

"Evidently, this was some type of party in the wee hours of the morning," Jackson said.

Thurman can apply for reinstatement for this coming season, although earlier this year coach Marvin Lewis refused to talk about whether Thurman still figured in the team's plans.

Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said Tuesday the team had no comment on the latest allegations.

"His situation is controlled by the league, he's not officially on our roster," Brennan said. "Since his possible reinstatement is in the league's hands, we would defer any comment to the league."

Whether he gets charged or not, I am in disbelief that ANY player is pulling stupid stuff like this after watching Roger "Big Toe" Goodell handle player misconduct in recent weeks.

I hate the bengals but I am almost starting to feel sorry for their fans. Their team is a bunch of lunkheads

Whoever was on Fox Sports Radio last night (about 8:00) read the report on this Odell thing.

He then said that even though teams are only in OTAs it's nice to see the Bengals in mid-season form.

I really think it's time for the Bengals to suck it up and tell both Thurman and Henry to look for another team to disrupt when their respective suspensions are up. Even if they are relatively good players(on the rare occasion that they're allowed to play), is it really worth having your franchise turned into a league-wide laughingstock? Not to mention, that you constantly have to worry about when(not if, but when) their next indiscretion will give the team image another black eye. If I were a fan, I'd be very embarrassed by the state of my team and ready to call for Marvin Lewis's head for letting it go on so long.

Two arrests is a coincidence, three arrests is a trend, twelve?(sorry I've lost count) arrests is the Bengals.

It was nothing more than a couple bored people looking to extort money from a NFL player.
When I saw that story posted a couple days ago, I thought "whatever" I'll post when the truth comes out.
A guy like Odell Thurman, who is a month away from reinstatement,I seriously doubt would create career suicide by beating down 2 guys who probally deserved it in the 1st place. Their story was baloney from the get go.
Meanwhile theres the Browns fans disappointed that Odell was innocent.
Myself I wouldn't mind seeing 150 tackles and 5 INTS back on the field for the Bengals. But thats up to Marvin Lewis when Odell gets reinstated.

First of all, nobody deserves to have a gun jammed in their mouth unless they did it first. Secondly, I think you'll notice that a lot of Browns fans said this would be sad if true.

My comment about him paying them off could easily be true if this incident indeed happened. For his sake, I hope it didn't....he needs to get his crap together and stay clean. But, looking in from the outside makes me wonder if he really can.

if he gets reinstated.

His record is not good, and given the Bengals situation I doubt that he will play for them in the future.

Didn't he get a Dui while he was suspended? The guy seems to have a serious problem and I don't know if he can beat it so easily. I don't think he intentionally goes out to get in trouble, but he does nonetheless.

By the way your article didn't post so there was nothing to read. Whether or not the supposed victims recanted their story has nothing to do with him being a Bengal. It has more to do with a troubled young man possibly doing something to save his career.
