I would love to know what was so bad that he deemed 'death from lions' as the way out? I mean, MAN!

...And in the nude. willynilly

P.S. I don't know why the lions had to be killed. After all, they were just being lions. You know?

So am I understanding? We capture wild animals who are predators, enclose them in unnatural habitats, allow a way for humans to enter the habitat, then kill them for doing what they do when an insane individual enters their habitat. Unreal! Just unreal!

Considering all the possible methods of committing suicide, I would think getting eaten alive by wild animals would fall near the very bottom of the list along with sliding down a fifty foot razor blade into a tub of alcohol, which would still be above the mauling.

I was thinking that too. It's one of the stranger ways I've heard of ... and painful

Darwin denied by outrageous, and undeserved good fortune.

Its a shame that the lions had to be euthanized - for doing what lions do - just to serve his twisted need for attention.

Well, it’s official.

After further review, I no longer think zoos are a good idea.

At least not for public exhibition.

Zoos were fine 100 years ago before TV and movies.

But now there’s incredible documentary specials with amazing videos of all sorts of animals doing everything from hunting, scavenging, sleeping, having sex.

Is it worth seeing what I think amounts to imprisoned animals?

I agree that it is horrible the lions had to be killed. I'm sure it has something to do with "once they have a taste for human flesh they can't be trusted" sort of thing. This a-hole likely made it unsafe for the zookeepers to do their jobs, and may have made them aggressive towards the zoo visitors.

I agree man.

I get why zoos exist, especially for endangered animals that are there for no other reason than because they've been poached to extinction levels.

But there's needs to be a middle ground now. We're putting big cats down only because we got idiots climbing in their sections, either trying to commit suicide, or that one person who was drunk and trying to pet them.

"Look honey, the monkeys are living comfortably in a safe habitat where they are fed regularly and are not in danger of being eaten by a predator."

Which is the funny part, as they have made these animal habitats larger and much closer to their natural habitat, they have given them many places to hide. Unlike when they were just in a cage.. .now if you go to the zoo you run the risk of not seeing as many animals..

But I still like to go to the zoo.

I used to love zoos. I still like them. They do serve a purpose. And yes, DC, zoos aren't what they used to be. So much effort has gone into replicating an animals natural habitat. I know, it's not the same.

And yes, the animals in a zoo don't have to worry about the predator/prey thing like they do in the real world.

Having seen many "zoo" animals in the natural habitat, I just don't get the same feel at a zoo anymore.

I was fortunate enough to spend 2 weeks in Kenya quite a while back. In the parks, we saw hippos, crocs, lions, cheetahs, 1 leopard, gazelle, zebras, giraffe, baboons (even watched a baboon take a ladies purse from the top of Treetops Hotel), wart hogs, hyena, elephants (our van was surrounded - the guide said "we can't start the van now, it might startle them) etc etc etc.

We were seeing them in their natural habitat - and let me tell you, it was awesome.

I understand why they felt the need to do it, they had to get to that child and I have no idea if a tranquilizer would have acted quickly enough to eliminate the danger the child was in.

Now how a 3 year old get into this situation is something you seriously have to look at the parents about.

I believe the reason that zoo's exist is the government wants them for national security. I think they let people go and visit, just as sort of a way to make it workable.

Same reason sea world type places exist. If there is a war, and suddenly the government realizes gorilla's can sneak under the lines, then having a zoo gives the government access.
And that, is national security.

There's a gorilla warfare joke in there somewhere.

Interesting. You may be onto something there, TL. I remember more than a few years back, hearing about the government creating an army of Pig-Men to fight the next war. I can't remember if it was Kramer on Seinfeld or Geraldo on MSNBC. (Doesn't matter, I suppose, since they have equal credibility.) Then there was the whole legend of ManBearPig, but that turned out to be something Al Gore made up.

Considering that male gorillas will kill male offspring from another male, they had no choice.

Yes, the problem was that the untamed gorilla had the ability to kill the little boy instantly. No choice.

A few years ago here in CT a pet chimpanzee bit a woman's face off. The whole front of her face: eyes, nose, mouth, all gone in an instant.

I won't post the "after picture" of her face. Here's the "before picture".
