It does feel that way and I guess there are two ways to look at it. At one point the US had a standard of living unlike almost anybody else in the world... we either need to fight to regain that or we can accept that all things find their equilibrium and it was destined that others would have to rise some and we would have to fall some... maybe nobody does stay on top forever.. not saying we should go without a fight, but are we fighting the inevitable.

It is a global economy, but the US sure seems to be more like trade deadline sellers than buyers lately.

Here it is, in a nutshell? Everyone here thinks they should be paid more. Everyone here shops for the cheapest stuff. Everyone wants more money, so they can buy stuff that costs less money.

It's like a feeding frenzy - but the food is being built/made in foreign countries.

Everyone thinks they deserve more pay, so that they can buy a product they don't make, at a cheaper price. But, "you" aren't supposed to do that. "You" are supposed to buy there product so they can make more money.

well, who's been selling us off?

at this point government = corporation. they're one in the same, it appears.

we've been selling the country off. we demand goods at a cheap price.

corps are going overseas to compete/maximize profits.

i want everybody to take a look at the global economy.

have y'all ever been to Israel? FYI, looks a lot like iraq.

anyway, most people in those manual labor jobs and service jobs? bangladeshi, africans, phillipinos, etc.

same with certain countries in europe. those jobs aren't really done by a lot of native citizens. pride thing.

we have the same problem here in america. i told yall to watch that Vice episode before. farmers don't have a choice to hire americans cause most americans don't wanna do that.

thats the reality, whether you choose to admit it or not.

it's a full circle of blame that belongs to everybody. we sold our own selves off.

Could be. Too many people think they should be entitled to sit in an air conditioned office, in front of a computer, making big bucks. Like they are entitled to it.

I have a very menial job, with nothing to back me up. Labor intensive. No paid holidays, no paid vacations, no employer matches.......heck, no employer. I do work that, 14 years ago, I thought was below me.

Today, and for the last 13 years? I love what I do and fear the day I can't be able to do it.

And I'm not rich.

j/c:

I have a couple of comments that will probably upset both sides. LOL...oh well.

--I think there are guys on here that don't like Obama because he is black and they constantly portray him in a negative light. I saw the national debt mentioned as an indictment. Yo man.......care to post the numbers while Bush was the president? Care to talk about how he sold his soul--and ours---to China? Care to talk about Reagan and his Freedom Fighters?

--Swish, the USA is not intolerant. I think we are too tolerant, but that is just a personal opinion. I do think the USA has other issues you could have touched on, such as how we manipulate other countries, how we are world's leader in pollution, how we set-up new governments in countries and then abandon them, how we are the most hated country in the world due in part to our interference, etc...........but intolerant..........no little bro. I ain't feeling that one.

I'd love to see the national debt each year for, say, the last 20 years. You brought it up, the info is available. Care to post it? No race here. Just facts please.

Oh wait...........for a minute, I thought you were being rational, but you are just being arch.

First off, I did not bring it up. Eric brought it up. I responded to his comment.

Secondly, you must have some knowledge of the amount of national debt to make the comment you did. Again, you are arch. Did you factor in the increase of percentage w/the national debt of each President or did you just use raw numbers?

The deficit. Now, I could show the numbers. But it would be neat if you would.

After all, you said this:
Quote:
Yo man.......care to post the numbers while Bush was the president? Care to talk about how he sold his soul--and ours---to China

So, go ahead. Post those numbers.

Obama's race (he's half white, remember?) doesn't come into play. Just the facts please.

Seriously, you are more intelligent than this, aren't you? You used to teach school.

By the way, China doesn't own much of our debt, relatively speaking. WE own most of our debt. You're an intelligent person, I think. Do some research.

We owe ourselves more than we owe china. But, we owe china too much.

Best way to handle that is? Borrow more, right? Cause that will get us out of debt, right?

The national debt has been an issue for years. It's not new. It's not a creation of Obama. To insinuate that it was [as Eric did] is false and/or misleading.

I will stand by my comments that race is a factor in whether some people like Obama or don't like him.

I will also stand by my comments that Swish was wrong for saying we are intolerant.

I will also stand by my comments that the USA does manipulate other countries, is the worlds greatest polluter, meddles too much, and is not liked by much of the world.

I ain't even arguing it. I am stating those things. You know.........like facts!

Hey arch..........I know you brought up my intelligence earlier, but really man, I am pretty good at math.

If you are having a hard time calculating the increase percentages of our national debt when Bush was the president vs when Obama has been the president, just forward me the numbers and I will do the calculations for you.

I do math...

$20 trillion man: National debt nearly doubles during Obama presidency

When President Obama signs into law the new two-year budget deal Monday, his action will bring into sharper focus a part of his legacy that he doesn’t like to talk about: He is the $20 trillion man.

Mr. Obama’s spending agreement with Congress will suspend the nation’s debt limit and allow the Treasury to borrow another $1.5 trillion or so by the end of his presidency in 2017. Added to the current total national debt of more than $18.15 trillion, the red ink will likely be crowding the $20 trillion mark right around the time Mr. Obama leaves the White House.

When Mr. Obama took over in January 2009, the total national debt stood at $10.6 trillion. That means the debt will have very nearly doubled during his eight years in office, and there is much more debt ahead with the abandonment of “sequestration” spending caps enacted in 2011.

I think our memory has forgotten just how bad the "recession" was. It was the greatest economical downfall since the Great Depression. Many people, in fact, would label it a "depression".

For example...at its worst, Oregon's state unemployment was about 15% and some towns were higher. Portland was about 12% at the height of the recession. We are now down to just over 5% unemployment and the population has grown. Cranes dot our skyline and progress and development are the buzz words in the city.

Obama deserves the credit for helping us claw our way out of what looked and felt like a black hole.

That's the American way, my friend. Everything is for sale for the almighty dollar bill. Same can be said about politics. If Trump wins then the White House & the US Presidency will be just another company on Trump's corporate resume.

I never said anything about the debt. I brought up GDP. His record on the GDP has been abysmal. Reading is fundamental. Please feel free to look over the last few posts of mine for anything on the debt.

the "great depression" recession started around 1929 and ended around 1938.

Arch acting like 8 years is long, yea, he clearly forgot, or chose to ignore how bad this recession was.

The president should have the powers assigned to him in the Constitution. Now, Trump could remove the regulatory burdens that the Obama administration has put on business. He also has the power to call on congress to change tax structures (congress still has to pass that as part of the budget). That can greatly affect the economy.

Are you talking the housing bubble or the Iraq war? Is this another blame Bush thing?

The housing bubble was started by Carter, regulatorily augmented by Clinton, and ignored under Bush II. Bush II didn't create the housing bubble, he was left holding the bag.

I have all sorts of complaints about the Iraq war, and I have stated them before. We would have been better off coopting Hussein rather than killing him. We had Iran between a hammer and anvil with our troops already in Afghanistan and Hussein with bitter memories of the Iran-Iraq war. He would have been a better puppet than corpse.

With all that said, even Obama complained about the debt being around $10 billion and a national security issue before he got elected. He has done little to nothing to lower the debt since he's been in office, so he must not consider it too much of an issue. They've all be in the wrong, and you're being silly if you think for one second I was a Bush follower. I had plenty of problems with him.

Lol, see I wasn't even talking about Bush. Read my post again.

I'm talking about the corporations you seem to worship. They have just as much responsibility for this mess as the government, but I never see you call them out.

Useless post is useless.

You never call out the issues corporations give the American economy.

Ever. I haven't seen one post

It's always the government. Which is funny seeing as how your very pay checks use to depend on the government since you was a contractor.

And that equates to 'worship'? It's nice to know I was right about the delusions. I haven't been a government contractor for over 20 years, and the small 8A company I worked for was a small fish in the contractor game.

Corporations do what they do. They try to pay the least taxes and make the most profit. When regulatory and tax burdens get too high, they try to find somewhere else cheaper to do business. That is one of the problems we have going on now. You add in some of the 'trade' deals, that allow certain countries to have 'free' trade to us (usually meaning they are able to undercut corporations in the US), then we lose out economically.

Do you really think GE would put money into 'green energy' research if they weren't getting the tax breaks? GE managed to pay no taxes because of their research. Oddly enough, GE is one of the few corporations within this country that could afford to do that, almost as if the legislation was tailor made for them. Maybe we should just go to a flat tax on businesses so none of them get special consideration.

Yep, with short term memory losses no wonder people forget the recession was beginning during Bush's term and think all the ills of the world rest on the last 8 years.

And 40...I have no idea what "horse hockey" means but, if you honestly do not think Trump is ready to corporate brand the White House and the US then you are naive. He is no saviour...he is an egotistical, power hungry, greedy, racist and xenophobic corporate business and real estate mogul who sees dollar signs on the vacancy of the White House and he pounces when people are at their weakest. All the middle class, blue collar/working class and very low income folks who have come out in support of him...he sits in his ivory tower on Columbus Circle and has no care for any of us except himself and his other friends who sit in the 1% . All Trump wants is their vote so he can get closer to his prize of #1 real estate property on the market. He is probably laughing at them all. Remember this guy made a ton of money during the recession while most of us lost most, nearly or everything we own. He embodies everything the 99% were protesting about just a few years ago. But, thanks to our appetite for sensationalist media that too is now lost in our short term memory collective.

Any time anybody wants to debate this to make Bush look bad, they always want the numbers in percentages because the tech boom had taken it unusually low and GDP was unusually high.. so anything Bush added to it looked really bad... in percentages..

here it is in real dollars, pretty sure Obama took over in 2008.. Hope this image isn't gigantic. Image wouldn't post...

Debt to GDP graph

I have no idea about the source, I just grabbed the first one I saw, if you can find a different one, go for it.
