From Berea: Thomas Optimistic He’ll Be Ready

By Fred Greetham
OBR Browns Reporter
Posted Jun 5, 2007

The offensive line took center stage today as rookie LT Joe Thomas said that he hopes to start all sixteen games and C LeCharles Bentley remains a possibility for the 2007 roster. Fred Greetham reports on Tuesday's OTA practices and comments by Phil Savage...

BEREA - If you ask Joe Thomas, he’ll be ready come the opening game of the season against the Steelers.
“My goal from the beginning was to start all 16 games as a rookie,” Thomas said after Tuesday’s OTA practice. “

Thomas might not have been just giving lip service as he said he and his agent are trying to get something done now. Thomas said the Browns’ Trip McCracken has been in Denver meeting with Thomas’ agent.

“We’ve been proactive (in contract negotiations),” Thomas said. “More than the other top five picks. My agent has been meeting with the Browns and I’ve heard things are going well. I’m encouraged.”

Phil Savage said the Browns have made proposals to all of their draft picks and thinks it would be important for Thomas, in particular, to be on time to training camp.

“As an offensive lineman, getting the timing down will be important for him,” Savage said. “The OTAs and minicamps are important, but training camp is when the pads go on.”

Thomas knows that talks frequently break down among top picks, but is hoping that won’t be the case for him.

“I don’t understand how this business works,” he said. “But it seems that most of the time the teams or agents wait until the last minute to get things going. My agent and I talked about my goal of starting all 16 games right from the beginning and we’ve been proactive toward that goal.”

Thomas also knows how important it is for rookies to be in camp with coach Romeo Crennel.

“Everything so far has been great,” Thomas said. “We’ve put in most of the offense and I’ve learned a lot. I feel we’re starting to coalesce as an offensive line.

“We’ve made huge strides,” he said. “It gives us a chance to learn techniques and be ready for minicamp.”

Notes

GM Phil Savage met with the media and updated the media on several topics:

LeCharles Bentley Update: “I can report there’s nothing scheduled for this week and he’s opted for no additional surgery,” Savage said. “He will continue to rehab for three or four weeks. I think it’s a good sign that he’s not having the surgery, but at this point we’re putting (the decision of him playing in 2007) off for three to four weeks.”

Bentley has been in Arizona recovering. Savage said he feels there has been enough recovery to put off another surgery, at least for now.

Gary Baxter Update: “He’s had a tremendous rehab and he was out on the field doing some running on Monday.”

K2: “He continues to rehab and should be ready for training camp.”

On Braylon Edwards being on third team: “He works with all teams whether it’s the first, second or third team. You can’t read much into the depth charts. I think he’s into it and wants to prove he’s a good player.”

On Bill Rees: “About a month prior to the draft, he said there was a situation with a family member that could impact his status. His new role is with Special Projects which will allow him to stay in Chicago and be with his wife and family.”

New Personnel Director: Savage said T.J. McCreight was promoted to take Rees’ place. Several other changes have taken place in the personnel area. Daniel Jeremiah joins the Browns as a national scout coming over from the Ravens.

Go Cavs: Several of the Browns echoed their support of the Cavaliers as they go to the NBA Finals.

“The Browns want to express congratulations to Danny Ferry and the Cavaliers,” Savage said. “They should be real proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

“I’m a Cavs fan,” Kamerion Wimbley said. “I think they’ll win. I don’t know in how many games, but I think they’ll win.”

“It’s great for the city,” Crennel said. “We’d like to build on their success.”

wouldn't that be nice if we get the first draft pick in the first to sign this early and get a top 5 pick at that

I love the fact that he's trying to get a deal done so he can be in camp on time...reminds me of Mr. Wimbley last year. Also like his motivation...so he can start all 16 games as a rookie. I knew I liked this kid since he decided to pass on the draft & go fishin' with dad on draft day.

Me too, I really think he'll be here on time. Especially given how he's said contract negotiations have already begun.

He'll blow past Shaffer before the first preseason game, and we'll all be very, VERY happy.

I love this guy's character.

I know BQ gets all the attention, but Joe is going to be our best player. And I stand by my prediction that he will be easier to sign than BQ because all Joe wants to do is play football. He won't let them rip him off, but he wants to start. It will get done.

Guys..........our players are excited about this season. Very excited. Hell, they are getting me excited, believe it or not.

I never cared for Gary Baxter the player, thought he was vastly overrated, but what a great story. I heard he works his ASS off.

Savage likes defending poor lil Leon. LOL

The Rees explanation is............hmmmm...........how can I say.....creative. *L*

Go Cavs!!!

And what is up w/the text?

I'll take the Rees explanation. I mean on the face of it Savage just isn't airing personal laundry. For all we know someone in his family has Cancer or something ( I sure hope not and if so my best hopes go out to him and his). Who are we to judge?

As for BAXTER I'll give that a huge H*ll Yah!! I always thought he was overated too, but this is an awesome story. Plus the Browns look very good for not cutting him. I say all around I'm as excited as I've ever been as a Browns fan! (Ok not playoffs excited.............yet!)

LOL.........you missed my meaning. And be assured, you don't have to waste time praying for his family. Unless they need the money. LOL

A nice side effect of giving the cold shoulder to rookies who hold out. Rookies know if they're not in on time, they're not going to be starting. Nice work, Romeo!

Glad to see the Browns have offers out to all the draft picks. If any of these players want to know about the benefits of holding out, they just need to stop by Travis Wilson's locker and ask him how it worked out for him last season.

Joe Thomas is the guy that will be the face of the Browns for the next decade...no nonsense, extreme work ethic, no excuses, all about winning. If the Browns have enough guys like this, championships are sure to follow.

Ummmm....

He may be the face to those who appreciate quality offensive linemen (a.k.a. people who know truly know their football) but the real face is gonna be Quinn if he can be the next great QB for us. Linemen don't get much coverage, but hell, I do think the fisherman thing was good for his publicity.

But I definitely agree with your first paragraph.

We Suck...we have always sucked! We'll be lucky to win more than 4 games this year. Savage don't have a clue what he's doing and he still hasn't brought any Pro-Bowlers in for our DL

Got to love Joe Thomas...that would be so cool to have him not only in on time but one of the first signed.

As for comparing him to BQ...sorry position of QB is a little different and more difficult to get done. We got to see some slots filled around him 15-30 and I'm sure it will get done.

JMHO

First off, I would appreciate it if you guys talk about the Browns and not me.

Secondly..........we have sucked. Unless you think going 19 and 45 good football.

I never said Phil doesn't have a clue. I said he has made some stupid moves, especially in FA. I also said his first draft sucked, which it did. I also said he was not drafting offensive linemen or defensive linemen. He changed that this year, so I am happier w/him.

And what did I say about BQ that was so bad?

Gee, Vers, it must be nice to have access to the kind of "inside" information you've got. I hope Rees' family doesn't frequent the board...

(from the Plain Dealer)

Front Office Changes
Former director of player personnel Bill Rees has been re-assigned to player personnel / special projects. He will work out of Chicago where a family member is seriously ill. T.J. McCreight has been promoted from assistant director of player personnel to personnel director and Steve Sabo will move up from pro personnel coordinator to director of pro personnel.
