Let's all hug. The Bentley injury has been a huge disappointment for me, I'd he shocked to see him play even next year from what I've heard and what I know about this kind of injury. I pray it's not career ending but, if I had to bet, I'd lean that way.

I haven't spoken to LCB's wife since High school, but I know they had at least one child together. I pray he is able to play again for their sake. Last I heard he bought a huge house and most of her family was living there.
I am not saying they will be out on the street by any means, but I pray he had a good financial advisor.

"You are wrong about what coaches know."
Its always been my experience that coaches all are individual. They all know in different capacity.
In regards to HS coaches...no slight intended. I'm sure the Hot bed of football in Ohio definately puts out a better grade of HS coaches then I experience in L.I., NY the hot bed for LaCrosse.
In your responsibilities of the Will LB...just curious - why would TE be his first Responsibility wouldn't that be SAM? Wouldn't Will designate a shift to the weakside meaning not manned by the TE. Or can I assume in HS most teams use Two TE? And you never designated whether the Defense was running a Cover 2 Zone or a Cover 2 Man base D.
But then - maybe its better to make a thread about Cover 2 and discuss stuff like that there.

One other thing I thought of when coaching any defense...
Make sure your corners yell "Crack" to let the WLBer know when a receiver is coming balls to the wall off the line to lay the smack down on 'em.

Jules...........I've been wanting to hug you for a long time. tab: I didn't say responsibility. I said "key." The TE is on the other side, but the SAM is typically out of the game when the other team has 3 or more receivers. The Cover 2 was exploited when teams left their Sam in. Teams now always go to a nickel coverage in this situation and the Sam is the guy who comes out. You know.......I've been thinking about starting some posts about certain football things, such as Zone blocking---both run and pass; Gap responsibilities; Coverages; Keys and Reads; etc. However, it takes some time to write those w/out getting too technical and I doubt I would get many responses. Just like when I tried to explain reading defenses and coverages in Diam's BQ thread, only a couple of people bothered to respond. Personally, I think it would be cool to talk about and people might get a better understanding of why things are done, when they are done, and the difficulties that are presented. Then, they might not fly off the handle everytime a play is called that doesn't work. And yeah...........Ohio coaches do know their .

Well, here's my take... You're right. The Strongside OLB is the "Sam" and would line up over top the TE, unless there are two TEs. (In that case, he would take the side with the split wide-out or the "field" if the ball in on the hash.) The Will would take the weakside in which he would eye the slot, wing, or RB unless a receiver goes in motion from the strongside to the weakside. If there is a two-TE set, the Will would take the side with the slot receiver, or the "Boundary" if the ball is on the hash. Most HS teams we face don't use a two-TE set. And I based my initial response on the premise that it was a Cover 2 Zone.

Yes! Good idea now that you mention it. But the trick is knowing when a team is likely to run trips or twins to one side, unless they use it all of the time. That takes a lot of film watching and being able to predict their gameplan based on what they have already run and set-up and knowing key situations like down and distance. That's why I love it though. It's mentally exhausting.

I wish you guys would do more of this. I like reading that kind of thing and learn a lot from it. I'm not likely to respond because I'm obviously not a coach, didn't play the game, and therefore know much less about the X and O type of things. You guys could also be good teachers for some of the guys on here who make it quite apparent that they don't have the slightest clue.
While your tinkling matches are indeed amusing now and again, you all would better serve the board by trying to be teachers once in a while and leave some of the arrogance aside now and again.

I'm sure you could piece together the time...somebody else thread might not have been the best place. Yes, the more technical possibly the less participation you will receive. But I've noted one thing over the years...the majority of the Posters on this board love to learn more about the game...me included.
Thread like that are well read even if not verociously participated in like a QB shmucky thread with 8 pages.
Besides it would require FOOTBALL and we would have a thread that you and I could feed off of each others posts rather than antagonize each other with our OPINIONs Make the Thread the Football will come

DO IT! I'd definitely read and reply since I'm pretty educated about the game but could use polishing in some areas. I know the ins and outs of both lines since I played them but the rest I could definitely use some polish on.
I know a bit about DB's since my brother plays DB, but he doesn't go into detail that often.

Just because I played high school football doesn't mean I know squat about schemes.
They basically spoon fed us through everything.
Know your plays and keys, and we'll guide you thorugh the rest.

Hey, all! I've been very busy, but finally had a minute to stop by. Vers, start some threads and as time permits between running weight lifting, going to camps, and getting my dad to and from PT for his leg, I'll try to join in. I LOVE that kind of talk and might even steal some things for this year

But then you have us post-high school former players who still have the competitive itch who would like to get back into the game in some capacity (read: assistant coaching) but only know so much. We're pretty well educated about our own positions and the gap responsibilities of the linebackers on each play, but that's basically it. I do know a few things about linebacker having played a couple games at Mike in 7 on 7 (yes they were just looking for warm bodies, but they said I held my own...and this is a D-tackle you're talking to), but that's it.
If my old HS coach wasn't such a backstabbing dolt (not only screwed my class over when we were seniors but recently bolted to Perry when promising the team that he wasn't even looking at another job...my brother's class is beyond pissed and betrayed), I would have loved to sit down and go over some X's and O's.

Ammo, I know you're at Ohio U, go and volunteer your time at any high school. I know that I have former players come and while they don't "coach", they do help the coaches in all kinds of ways from holding dummies to being a "gofer". At the same time, they sit in the coach's meetings and skull sessions. This is a great way to learn more and get your foot in the door.

It's not the replies that are important. It's how many times it has been viewed. Many people are probably afraid to reply IMO for fear of being found out that they aren't as knowlegeable. I do not understand this type of thinking but it does exsist. I would not be afraid to ask a question if it is something I don't understand.

Alright, it sounds like there is some interest. Perhaps others who are in the know will help me out???
And don't feel like you shouldn't respond just because you don't know. You are intelligent and will ask some good questions. Often, questions open things up so more information comes out and more people can learn. I just don't want the threads to get no responses and then get buried on page two right away.
Also, I would never make fun of anyone who doesn't know things. I only get on people if they pretend they know. For example, I don't know too much about how the Christians borrowed many of their biblical stories from the Persians, but I would sure like to learn more about it.....provided someone would be willing to talk to me about it.
I've been thinking about bringing up a discussion on zone blocking. I get the feeling we might be using it some this year. It's not my strongest area, but I know a little.

Ammo: If you wish to do some coaching, obviously I highly recommend it. But it's hard for people who aren't teachers, especially at the varsity level, because of the time commitment. We practice 4 days a week, play games on Friday, come in and watch film Saturday morning, and then have a coaches meeting on Sunday nights. It is a 7-day a week job on top of teaching, for most of us. But you learn as you go. I played DB in high school and college. I didn't have much of a clue what responsibilties the linebackers and d-line had, but now I do. You just never stop learning. That's why it's always good to start small (8th grade or youth leagues) and then move your way up. Before you know it, provided you can do your job, you're a coordinator or a head coach somewhere and you just adopt your system from bits and pieces of those before you.

Trust me, I'm already wanting to introduce myself to the new coaching staff at the high school. The biggest hurdle is that my brother's gonna be a senior right now and he doesn't want me meddling in their business too much. He says too many people know me and they wouldn't take me as seriously as they should. I think he's right too. I know you said "any" high school but former players have come back here, so I'd like to do the same.
We've lost our head coach, head basketball coach, Principal (who therefore raided the coaching staff), D-line coach (which really bugs me because he was my mentor and the only truly honest guy on that coaching staff), possibly the D-coordinator too since the new guy is Chardon's former D-coordinator, might even lose our Athletic Director. All to Perry. I don't think Chagrin's the biggest rival anymore. I'm so far removed from high school that it doesn't fire me up like it would have, but it's still a shocker.
I'd love to volunteer my time for the D-line, since I still remember the responsibilities and the drills we ran, until they find a new D-line coach.

Here's what some of my older friends have done. Usually they volunteer over summer and during two a days, then go off to school. My job might get in the way, I'm not sure yet. Even if I couldn't be there for two a days, just summer workouts would be cool.
One of my friends had a REALLY good track, interned under Tressel at OSU then became special teams coordinator at the high school, and recently took the old head coach's teaching position. He's gonna be the head coach someday, it's literally a matter of when rather than if.
I have no interest in being a teacher so I know that's a huge hurdle.

You don't need to go to your high school especially since your brother is there and the other kids know you drink a lot. *L*
We used to hire college kids who played hs football to help out w/our Jr. High teams. Let's say you get on a 7th or 8th grade staff, there will only be about 3 of you. You get to learn the terminology, the responsibilities, the drills, etc. You also get to develop your people skills. Our Jr. High school coaches were required to scout each Friday night. You'll pick up a lot there too. Next, go to the high school practices if they aren't the same time as yours. Stay out of the way and don't ask questions during practice, but make yourself visible. Then, when they have time, try to talk to the coaches about certain drills, techniques, plays, etc. Be genuine. Don't act like you know a lot, just shut your mouth and nod your head a lot. Say stuff, like..."hmmm, that makes sense now. Thanks for explaining that to me." Let them know you are interested in coaching when you are done w/college. Let them know you would love to attend coaching clinics. Above all.....out work every other coach. Don't ever be late. We are smart enough to know when you are late because you have a freaking hangover. If you wanna do it, you gotta make the commitment.

hehehe...yeah I'd have to say the coaching philosophy is a little different in the OHIO HS system than ours...After all the criteria to becoming an asst. coach for our Varsity team here is.
1. Be a teacher. 2. Lose a lot a weight.
Bingo you must know a lot about conditioning and football will come - YOU GOT A JOB or I like to call it a Syphon for the teachers here

what the hecks wrong with you post away.....
thats the kind of stuff i live for around here....most of the other crap is just that crap....
i don't personally respond much to that kind of stuff, because i have a 'layman's' point of view, but i love knowing more about football because it makes the game more enjoyable....
i remember a few years back when diam posted about how you have to watch the game on tape....so i started tivoing the games and watching them again...if gave me alot of insight into why the play broke down or worked...granted what you see on tv doesn't tell the whole story, but it opened up my eyes to more of the truth.....as apposed to the guy that said from his seat in the bar, "what a crappy throw"....i could see the play might have worked if the guard that pulled didn't miss his guy, and the qb had to hurry his throw....
i've always thought that if we could get some good threads going that explain a certain aspect of the game, that we could archive them for someone who wants to learn something....
Attitude is everything....FEAR THE ELF!!!

I really wish you would! I mean I know certain aspects of the game fairly well. But a lot of the responsibilities on the D aren't one of my specialties to say the least. The better I understand the "complete game" the far better I would like it!
And the lack of response? Well, other than asking a few questions, how could I respond? I don't enough about the subject to debate you on it. IMO- if you look at how many people that "read" the post, rather than "respond to it", it will give you a far better gauge as of to how many people are interested in the topic. Many people,I feel will read it,yet may not have much to "add or respond". Often times when one is "learning" about a subject, they read it to understand, yet have little input to respond with.
I'm sure many posters would read it and learn from it. But please make it simple enough we can all grasp the concept?
ie.......This Sam guy sounds like he's pretty cool, but I have no idea exactly who he is.,

And did you mean to say stipend? Believe me, the money they pay coaches is not even close to being fair. When I was an assistant, a few of us figured it out one year.......we made less than 25 cents per hour. No one does it for the money.
One other thing. Anyone notice that Ammo disappeared after I mentioned working hard, keeping your mouth shut, and working your way up through the ranks?

Hey racer, I'm kinda like you. I've PMed a poster or two once in awhile, asking X and O stuff because I'm curious. Usually it's someone I believe has a fairly good grasp of the game. BTW, anyone who wants to know why a tennis player at the net should use a backhand grip even when he's attempting a forehand volley, just ask!

Vers, that would be great, if you are so inclined and have the time. Just because there aren't many responses doesn't mean it isn't being read.
Hmmmm ... that kind of thread in the Pure Football forum. What will you think of next?

Believe me, the money they pay coaches is not even close to being fair. When I was an assistant, a few of us figured it out one year.......we made less than 25 cents per hour. No one does it for the money.
Truer words were never spoken. It is depressing to think about the financial injustices that occur in the public school system, but like you said, no one does it for the money. That applies to teaching as well. After all the camps, summer weight room sessions, two-a-days, and then regular season responsibilities like practices, games, film sessions, and coaches meetings, it's ridiculous how much we actually make. $ .25 an hour actually seems generous but I've never sat down and figured it out. All I know is that my contract says August - November, but in truth, the only month I'm not doing something football related is December. January and February holds the clinics and we start our off-season lifting at the end of Feb and early March. That continues all the way up until camp in late-July. But I coach Track in the spring too so that gives me a little break I guess. Anyway, I'm not complaining when that supplemental check arrives right before Christmas. It's enough to make it worth it. But the real compensation comes in that locker room after a win on Friday nights! You can't even put a price on that.
BTW Vers: Seems like you've generated some interest with your 'Football 101' idea. I'll help with whatever you need but I'm not gonna be around here much after next week cuz' school's out and I'll be in the weight room and whatnot. But I'll check in from time to time.

Yea Vers - We all like to learn. But there are what seems to be about a handful of high school football coaches and maybe a couple of guys who played college football on this board. So the rest of us just can't contribute much in those threads. We still enjoy reading them.

"They turned you down, huh? *L*"
Not even an option to get turned down...Got to be a teacher no and, ifs or butts about it. My two boys were in the system so I got to know it well and were able to see it up close and personal.
And remember I'm talking about where I live...I don't have a clue how Ohio operates.
Vocabulary: well you didn't have a problem understanding what I wrote, siphon...lol in prose communication is the object - stop grading my paper, once a teacher always a teacher.
Sure its not a lot of money...out here I think they pay 3-5 grand for the season. Pending on years experience. 3 seasons so some are getting 9-15 grand extra.
As for coaching...I coached Varsity Baseball when I was 22 - Before the teaching rule was in place.
Don't try that uppity higher than thou coaching thing about being turned down.
The system here sucks...we got players, we don't have anyone teaching the game. They don't even know what Cover Zero is. The HC with 25 years of experience gosh knows learning WHAT calls that Cover 4 and utilizes it every time we are ahead in the 2nd half up by two scores and every year we lose with it and he don't get it!!! I did a print out from Football 101 listing cover 0, cover 1, cover 2, etc. gave it to my son and said...please, please give this to your coach. He was afraid of reprisals (i'm sure I misspelled that too ) and said he couldn't. But its comical and sad.
Most of the team would come to my house and watch film together...I coached them up as much as I could then.
"One other thing. Anyone notice that Ammo disappeared after I mentioned working hard, keeping your mouth shut, and working your way up through the ranks?"
Gee I'm impressed...you put him down - for a self professed fighter against BULLIES...you sure do your share of Bullying. But I ain't budging and not for the least bit inferior regardless of your attemp to slander my credibility with your "Got turn Down bit" - I've done my share of coaching - OUTSIDE the school system. And more important remained a student of the game - and have had to resort to giving clinics to young adults. Mostly for free cause I refuse payment. And before you go there - yes I have been offerred payment.

Man............you just never get it. You can't tell humor and good natured kidding from bullying and insults. You just want to believe I'm an ass. That is why it is better if you and I do not speak.
Oh...........and Ammo. I wasn't putting you down at all. Not even close. Anyone who has worked their way up through the coaching ranks knows it's not an easy process. Most people do indeed turn away when they find out what it's about. I was actually saying that for the benefit of the other coaches on the board.
You start off in a middle school or junior high. Your equipment isn't as good, the practice fields suck, the pay sucks, you do a ton of grunt work, you do have to shut up and run errands, you scout, you attend meetings, etc. It's not easy and most people say screw that when they find out what it entails.
The only positive about coaching is if you are the kind of person who truly enjoys helping young men grow as human beings. If that is your goal.......it's the greatest job in the world!

Why communication on a message board is not the most condusive.
But I've seen you post almost the same thing to a word in downgrading a poster of two so I could only assume it was a slam. *L* didn't soften it.
Lets stick to football.

Thats what its all about and whether you believe me or not - or care for that matter. My respect for you grew a bit there.

Oh I know, I know good natured ribbing when I see it. I was just explaining why I couldn't reply.
I know exactly what you mean by coaching being full of grunt work and starting at the bottom. I've seen friends of mine coach pee wee, and I've seen some start at the freshman level too, actually.
As for helping young men grow, already have qualifications for that (no pedo). I'm a camp counselor for a reason (and it's not manual labor, that helps).

Anyone else smell a "good natured ribbing" here? Yeah, okay, I won't go there.
