Dolphins to Culpepper: Your future's not here BY JEFF DARLINGTON Quarterback Daunte Culpepper is officially on the way out of the Dolphins' door. On the morning after acquiring Chiefs quarterback Trent Green, Dolphins officials notified Culpepper they are ''going in a different direction'' and will attempt to trade him. Coach Cam Cameron and general manager Randy Mueller met with Culpepper Wednesday morning to notify him of their plans. Still, Culpepper said Mueller and Cameron also advised him that he would not be cut -- and he would be kept on the roster throughout the off-season despite his inevitable departure. 'They would like to trade me in order to `get something for me,' '' Culpepper said in an e-mail to The Miami Herald on Wednesday morning. ``However, it is my position that I have already been down that road and I am not interested in being traded. ``They have told me throughout the off-season that I am under contract to the Dolphins. Therefore, it will be up to them to either keep me under contract or release me. In the meantime, I will continue to work out at the facility with the team and prepare myself for training camp, wherever it may be.'' The decision to trade Culpepper comes a day after the medical staff cleared him to participate in an off-season practice Wednesday and this weekend's minicamp. It also comes on the same day Green will arrive in South Florida. http://www.miamiherald.com/614/story/130379.html[Ref00: Edited title to update it]

Hmmmm........it might be fun to try and predict which 3 teams are interested. It's kinda tough because some of the teams that I thought might be interested in him like Chicago, Oakland, and Atlanta are said not to be interested.
My guesses:
Ravens: McNair is getting older and Billick likes big-armed QBs.
Redskins: Snyder throws big money at veterans all the time. I think they like their young qb, but Brunell is really old.
Jacksonville: I know they were thinking about taking Quinn and keep flip-flopping between their current QBs. If you have two, you have zero.
The only other teams I thought might be interested are Dallas, SF, Detroit, and KC [they need one, but that would be too bizarre since Green just got traded from there].
Anyone else wanna pipe in?

Well, just ahead of your post, I was guessing the Lions or maybe even the Ravens..... and I still think that the Texans are the best fit...

I really dont believe the Texans would go after him, They just paid Schuab Millions to get sacked this year, I dont believe they'd pay more money to bring in Culpepper,

Wonder who the 3 are???
In anycase what NFL team would deal with Miami when all know Culpepper will be released. Why trade? Miami thinks they can recoup that 5th round pick
I'm sort of glad Miami are a bunch of buffoons right now as they were the key team to pass on BQ in the draft. The more they show they don't have a clue the better in my mind at least that they made a poor judgment call in passing on BQ and their loss is our gain

I wouldn't be surprised if the Pats were one of the teams interested in getting him. Sign him to a short term deal and cut him if he doesn't perform or get healthy, or starts acting up. Reunite him with Randy and see how he does... makes sense to me. They've already made a lot of big moves this off-season, not that this would qualify as a big move.

Do you honestly think that New England would bring him in to throw to Moss and bench Brady in the process? Sorry, but I'd be less surprised if the Browns brought in Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb to battle it out to be Brady Quinn's mentor.

I can almost guarantee that Tampa is one of the 3 teams with interest. Doesn't mean that they'll sign him though. If I had to guess, then I'd say the other 2 were maybe Cincinnati and maybe the Titans or someone with no backup.

Baffling and outstanding all at once. I still shake my head when I think about that day. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw he was still on the board at nine, then at around 15 I'm thinking, "Go get him!" I almost had a heart attack when we grabbed him at 22. I had to sit down and I kept saying to myself, "Oh my God, I can't believe it." What a wonderful, wonderful day that was.

As soon as Miami passed on Quinn I knew that we'd trade up to get him. It's funny how after the top 10 not many teams really need a QB (which is why they're not picking top 10). Hopefully that was the biggest QB steal since Marino slid in his draft.

After what the Texans gave up for Schaub, they would be crazy to want Culpepper. They way over spent for him, then going after Culpepper before Schaub has taken a snap would send messages to the Texan fans that the FO doesn't know what they're doing. I would have to exclude the Texans from the Culpepper sweepstakes.
Let's see how the Vick thing turns out. The outcome of that could increase his value to the Dirty Birds.
Or maybe a Reunion with Linehan in St. Louis? Perhaps.
Detroit is a possibility., but they drafted Stanton. So I doubt it.

Green trade ends one saga, starts another By Adam Schefter NFL Analyst Adam Schefter's "Around the League" reports and commentaries can be seen regularly on NFL Total Access. (June 6, 2007) -- The attention showered on quarterback Brett Favre last offseason went to quarterback Trent Green this offseason. Just as there were near-daily updates on Favre's decision about whether or not he would play, there were near-daily updates about when Green would be dealt to Miami. Now, finally, mercifully, thankfully, it has happened. The Chiefs traded Green to the Dolphins for a conditional 2008 fifth-round pick that turns into a fourth-round pick if the quarterback plays in 70 percent of Miami's offensive plays. Trent Green can finally focus on football now that he's been traded. So 70 percent is Kansas City's magic number. If Green meets the number, it means that the Chiefs would have an extra pick in the fourth round, where they have drafted standout players such as linebacker Donnie Edwards and defensive end Jared Allen. While Kansas City waits to find out exactly what it will receive, Green already knows what he is getting from Miami. Two months ago, Green and the Dolphins agreed to a three-year contract that is weighted heavily in Year 1 and leveled greatly in Years 2 and 3. The contract's length is not accidental. The 37-year-old Green is heading to Miami hoping to play three more NFL seasons. Green is scheduled to sign the contract on Thursday, one day before he takes part in his first minicamp with the Dolphins. Now the Green saga is, basically, over. But the one involving Daunte Culpepper is just beginning. Now that Green is a Dolphin, Culpepper has turned into Trent Green, waiting to see when and if he will be traded. As of Wednesday night, the Dolphins were in discussions with three teams about a potential Culpepper trade. One source with knowledge of the trade talks estimated that there is a 50-50 chance that Miami will be able to deal Culpepper. It's not as if the Dolphins are seeking a lot in return, either. All they are asking teams for is a late-round draft choice, perhaps a sixth-round pick. Teams involved in the trade talks also know that Culpepper is willing to reduce the $5.5 million base salary he is scheduled to make this season, enhancing the chances of a trade. Who the teams are is the most intriguing mystery in the NFL right now. None want their identities exposed due to the issues it would raise. Any team that acquires Culpepper would be sending a message to the rest of its quarterbacks that their jobs are in jeopardy. Daunte Culpepper could soon be on his way out of a Dolphins uniform. None want to be identified, but some teams not interested in Culpepper can be named. Atlanta, Chicago, Minnesota, the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders -- teams that, at various points, have been linked in some way to Culpepper -- all said Wednesday that they have no interest in trading for or signing the soon-to-be former Dolphins quarterback. Possible destinations for Culpepper according to NFL personnel men that speculated on the matter still include the Detroit Lions, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New England Patriots and the St. Louis Rams. But no teams were willing to come forward to claim they had any interest in Culpepper. There also is no reason for the Dolphins or other teams to fabricate any interest in Culpepper; the asking price for his services is too low. So now that the Green question has been answered, the Culpepper one is up next. The answer should come soon enough. The Dolphins and Culpepper want the matter resolved sooner rather than later, and the current game of musical chairs at quarterback could be wrapped up by the weekend. Meanwhile, in Kansas City, the feeling is the Chiefs will give former third-round pick Brodie Croyle every opportunity to win their starting job. If Croyle plays the way the Chiefs hope, he will be their starter. If not, the Chiefs have a quality backup in Damon Huard, who signed a three-year, $7.5 million contract this offseason that included a $2.75 million signing bonus -- low starting-quarterback money but great money for a backup. Croyle is going to get plenty of reps in training camp this summer, and plenty of time in the preseason to prove he belongs. Source

Based on the article and the fact that Culpepper acts as his own agent, it's this Brown's fan opinion that he'll end up as a Jag.
Here's the reasoning. It puts both Garrard and Leftwich in jeopardy and two, they're the only other Florida team who could potentially be interested and that's home to Culpepper. Tampa has a group of QB's and wouldn't want to tie too much salary into the same position.
It was known that Jack Del Rio wanted to draft Brady Quinn, which makes it a good possibility that Culpepper could be Del Rio's guy. Should Culpepper end up in Jacksonville, then Leftwich is probably the man out. Then where does he end up?
I see this causing a domino effect until one team who truly needs a QB grabs the last left over. JMO

The guy is built like a linemen and has a knee injury. Reminds me of one LCB.

I'm suprised Tampa isn't one of the teams wanting Culpep. They do have Sims/Garcia/Gradkowski. But Gruden seems to want every QB available allt he time. St.Louis and New England don't suprise me (Linehan and Moss ties). Detroit does b/c I thought Kitna was their man all the way in motown with young gun Drew Stanton being groomed as the future QB.

Culpepper requests release one day after Dolphins add Green June 7, 2007 CBS SportsLine.com wire reports http://sportsline.com/nfl/story/10217385MIAMI -- Daunte Culpepper wants to choose his next team, so he's asked the Miami Dolphins to release him. Culpepper, who serves as his own agent, made the request Thursday -- one day after the Dolphins completed a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for quarterback Trent Green and told Culpepper they would try to trade him. "I must say the impatience the organization displayed in both encouraging me to rush back on the field last year and then rushing me out the door this year is disappointing," Culpepper said. "However, I understand that they have the right to make that business decision. It is now my turn to make some decisions." Dolphins coach Cam Cameron has indicated he wants to have some resolution to the Culpepper situation by Friday, when the team opens a three-day minicamp. Green, the presumed starter in Miami this season, will be there -- and Culpepper said he'll also be on the field if he's not released first. Culpepper had a major right knee injury in 2005, yet the Dolphins still sent a second-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for him before the 2006 season. Culpepper started the first four games last season, before the team shut him down because of problems with the knee, and he's been largely unable to compete in practices so far this offseason. But the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback obtained clearance from orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews to resume football activity on Monday, and Dolphins' team physicians followed suit on Tuesday -- while the team was nearing a deal with Kansas City for Green, who was the starter there for most of the past six seasons. Daunte Culpepper was limited to four games in his lone season in Miami due to knee problems. (AP) "It is necessary to obtain a release rather than seek a trade so that I would not bring the excess baggage of my present contract to a new team," Culpepper said. "I feel like my next team should have the opportunity to get to know me as a man and a player before they make any long-term commitment." In 84 games over parts of the past seven NFL seasons, Culpepper has completed 64 percent of his passes for 21,091 yards and 137 touchdowns with 89 interceptions. The Dolphins had no intentions to keep both Green and Culpepper. They re-signed backup Cleo Lemon to a one-year deal earlier this offseason, and chose Brigham Young quarterback John Beck in the second round of this year's draft after passing on Notre Dame's Brady Quinn with the ninth overall pick. Miami and Kansas City talked for weeks about a trade involving Green. The Dolphins offered a sixth-round pick before the NFL Draft, the Chiefs insisted on a fourth-round selection, and the sides ultimately agreed on a fifth-rounder in 2008's draft -- which could become a fourth-round choice depending on how Green fares in Miami this season. When the trade finally became final, Culpepper said he'd welcome being part of an open competition for the job in Miami, yet said Thursday that he suspected that wouldn't happen. "Even though it is frustrating, I had prepared myself for the possibility that I would not be given an opportunity to compete here since the week before this year's NFL Draft," Culpepper said. "At that time it became obvious to me that my desire to compete would not trump established relationships." These might be the classiest words I have ever heard Culpepper say.

I could see the Lions snatching him for sure. Daunte Culpepper could flourish with those WRs and Mike Martz. I think Martz is a really good coordinator and that any QB would do decent in his system. I'd start him over Kitna I think. Keep Kitina around though for sure because Culpepper could easily go down again.
But overall I think if Culpepper plays a 16 game season he will be an average starting QB, his situation affecting a lot of his "success." The guy was a great QB on the Vikings and I don't care who the O-Coordinator and Randy Moss is, Culpepper lit it up. Period.
I think many make hiim out to be worse than he is

I'm not sure bringing in a backup quarterback with minimal or no investment sends much of a message to one of the best QBs in the game, nor should it, dude.

Daunte Culpepper took another step toward leaving the Miami Dolphins for good on Friday. Escorted off the practice field by a member of the club's security staff, Culpepper said he would not agree to a trade. While he will not accept a trade, Culpepper likely will be released in the coming days. ADVERTISEMENT "I will not agree to any trade," the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback told the Miami Herald. "I definitely expect to be released." It already has been a whirlwind week for Culpepper, who was told by the Dolphins that they were going "in another direction" at quarterback after the club acquired Trent Green from the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday. Culpepper showed up at the Dolphins minicamp practice Friday. According to a report in the Miami Herald, Culpepper said the Dolphins told him during a meeting in front of the whole team he had no future with the team and would not be able to practice with the team, other than individual drills. Culpepper left the field midway through the practice, escorted by Stu Weinstein, the Dolphins security chief. Acquired from the Minnesota Vikings, Culpepper's first season in South Beach in 2006 was riddled by injuries, as he was limited to five games due to knee problems suffered while still in the "Twin Cities". The former Central Florida standout underwent reconstructive surgery on the knee midway through the 2005 campaign. Culpepper now will join the likes of Jay Fiedler, Gus Frerotte and Joey Harrington as signal-callers who could not overcome the shadow left by Hall of Famer Dan Marino. link
