Browns running Isaiah Crowell is receiving backlash for a controversial image he shared to Instagram.

After the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two black men recently killed by police, various athletes have shared their thoughts through social media. Crowell, however, shared a graphic illustration of a police officer having his throat slit open by a hooded figure.

The caption on the image read, "Mood: They give polices all type of weapons and they continuously choose to kill us...#Weak. (Warning: This image is graphic).

The post was especially troubling considering five Dallas police officers were killed in an attack three days ago. Cleveland.com reports that Crowell had already put the image up before the attack.

Browns fans have taken to Twitter to condemn Crowell for the post, who deleted the image rather quickly.

Browns fans have taken to Twitter to condemn Crowell, who deleted the image rather quickly. He issued a formal apology Monday afternoon through the Browns.

"Last week was an emotional and difficult week as we saw extreme acts of violence against black men across our country as well as against police officers in Dallas," Crowell wrote in a statement. "I posted an image to Instagram in the midst of that emotion that I shouldn't have and immediately removed it. It was an extremely poor decision and I apologize for that mistake and for offending people.

"My values and beliefs do not match that image. I am outraged and upset by the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile along with so many others. I am also outraged and saddened by the attacks in Dallas and the deaths of the 5 honorable police officers (Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael J. Smith, Brent Thompson and Patrick Zamarripa) who were providing protection while trying to keep peace.

"We have to be better as a society, it's not about color, it's about what's right and wrong. I was very wrong in posting that image. Every single life matters, every death as a result of violence should be treated with equal outrage and penalty."

It's not clear exactly when the post went up. Cabot claims the post was before the Dallas ambush, but news outlets seem to indicate it was put up Monday afternoon. In any case, there's really no good time for images like the one Crowell put up.

social media can be the best form of communication and entertainment and also the worst form of decision making and ignorance

Social media is a virus and it's infecting people all over the globe and causing people to let their true feelings be expressed, then the "oh crap" moment when they realize what they just did and know they can't stop it from getting out and have to start walking it back.

Amazingly stupid Crowell.

Usually I channel my energy into mentoring the young black boys at my church or promoting a progressive agenda through my union. By doing things I consider to have real, tangible impact I am able to resist the impulse of getting into debates on the internet.

I think Crowell made a poor decision. He choose an inarticulate way of expressing his emotions. In spite of that, I understand. There is real, justifiable rage among black Americans about what is taking place on the streets across this country.

Its amazing that the response from 46 million black Americans has been as tame as it has been to this point. Before the "between the lines" readers decide that I am condoning the killing of police who are uninvolved in the murders of unarmed black citizens let me state this is not what I am saying.

What I am saying is that it's naivete or arrogance or something in between to expect no reaction to these killings when no justice has been rendered for the lives taken unjustly at the hands of police.

Release him? Really?

Were you as adamant when 137 shots were fired into the vehicle of unarmed Timothy Russell killing Russell and his passenger Malissa Williams? How about when cops where on the scene for an estimated 12 seconds when they shot down 12 year old Tamir Rice to death.

Did you call for swift justice when people actually died?

We are thin at RB, now is not the time.

Joking aside, he did something that wasn't very smart but we don't need to hang him for it.
He screwed up and to his credit, later apologized.

Then massive props to the Browns' PR department for criticizing extrajudicial executions. Not every day you see a multibillion dollar company speak in defense of the unprotected.

It was stupid but it wasn't murderous. Saying something stupid is not proportional to killing unarmed citizens. People aren't going to be silenced for the sake of the status quo. I'll be surprised if the league or the team sanctions him.

Of course a PR staffer wrote it - not difficult to tell. I'm sure they didn't do it without his wanting to make some form of public apology. No doubt it was also at the team's urging , I imagine.

Day-to-day they design, develop and distribute messaging that is intended to position the firm in the marketplace.

In crisis they diffuse issues that threaten the corporate brand. In my estimation, what Crowell said is less damaging than the two years of JFF escapades has done to the team.

What they really do and what they're capable of are separate things entirely. They rarely overlap, but in this case they do a little.

Million dollar talent
10 cent mind.
Instead of Crowell trying to get attention at
A very sensative time in our nation
Maybe he should go to a children's hospital and visit
Some kids with health issues and brightening their day
With a simple bed side visit and team products.

Pretty sure he wasn't looking for attention, but expressing his feelings, as you say, in a very sensitive time not only for our nation, but for the black community.

And Crowell has done his share of community service.

The Browns and the NFL have to show they take this stuff seriously but his removal of the pic and appology doesnt warant the full 4 game suspension. I think a 1 game sends the right message without overreacting.

I wont be surprised if Crow isnt cut due to pressure from the fan base and from the Cleveland PD. Its why I believe the Browns would be best served to do the quick suspension and to work past it. Just letting it linger does no one any good.

I dont agree with the sentiment of his post, but I feel he has the right to feel how he feels.

He has the right to post whatever he wants and the NFL and the browns have the right to defend their logo from his embarrassing actions. I hope he isnt released and learns from this but if we cut him I will not have one drop of empathy for him. bottom line, he isnt good enough to be a distraction.

The tweet was before Dallas. We've kept worse players who've done far worse. I would be very disappointed if we cut him

It was a passionate tweet about an issue he's very passionate about

EDIT: I think that if Crowell showed up at a Police Event for Kids, that would be enough. Like a police camp or something. At least around me, during the summer, these types of events aren't unusual.

It would be something exciting for the kids, and a good way for Crowell to do something positive

It was an incredibly foolish thing to do. However, if the NFL dumps players who do incredibly foolish things, there won't be enough players to field teams.

Hopefully he learns from this situation.

Exactly. He's 23 years old. This is a very passionate issue, and one that hits close to home for a specific demographic of our country (which he is part of). Of course he should know better, simply because he participates in a very public job.

But we have to stay level headed here. I mean, what if our employers evaluated us based on what we even said on this message board?
