The Bible says this, 'A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches'.

If you lose your wealth, you can get it back again so long as you have a good name.

Word of mouth is the best thing going in the trades isn't it?

It's the snow ball effect in real life. One referral could lead to one or two more that then lead 20 or 30.

Hopefully this explains it.

Quote:
1. Naturalist Intelligence (“Nature Smart”)

Designates the human ability to discriminate among living things (plants, animals) as well as sensitivity to other features of the natural world (clouds, rock configurations). This ability was clearly of value in our evolutionary past as hunters, gatherers, and farmers; it continues to be central in such roles as botanist or chef. It is also speculated that much of our consumer society exploits the naturalist intelligences, which can be mobilized in the discrimination among cars, sneakers, kinds of makeup, and the like.

2. Musical Intelligence (“Musical Smart”)

Musical intelligence is the capacity to discern pitch, rhythm, timbre, and tone. This intelligence enables us to recognize, create, reproduce, and reflect on music, as demonstrated by composers, conductors, musicians, vocalist, and sensitive listeners. Interestingly, there is often an affective connection between music and the emotions; and mathematical and musical intelligences may share common thinking processes. Young adults with this kind of intelligence are usually singing or drumming to themselves. They are usually quite aware of sounds others may miss.

3. Logical-Mathematical Intelligence (Number/Reasoning Smart)

Logical-mathematical intelligence is the ability to calculate, quantify, consider propositions and hypotheses, and carry out complete mathematical operations. It enables us to perceive relationships and connections and to use abstract, symbolic thought; sequential reasoning skills; and inductive and deductive thinking patterns. Logical intelligence is usually well developed in mathematicians, scientists, and detectives. Young adults with lots of logical intelligence are interested in patterns, categories, and relationships. They are drawn to arithmetic problems, strategy games and experiments.

4. Existential Intelligence

Sensitivity and capacity to tackle deep questions about human existence, such as the meaning of life, why do we die, and how did we get here.

5. Interpersonal Intelligence ("People Smart”)

Interpersonal intelligence is the ability to understand and interact effectively with others. It involves effective verbal and nonverbal communication, the ability to note distinctions among others, sensitivity to the moods and temperaments of others, and the ability to entertain multiple perspectives. Teachers, social workers, actors, and politicians all exhibit interpersonal intelligence. Young adults with this kind of intelligence are leaders among their peers, are good at communicating, and seem to understand others’ feelings and motives.

6. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence (“Body Smart”)

Bodily kinesthetic intelligence is the capacity to manipulate objects and use a variety of physical skills. This intelligence also involves a sense of timing and the perfection of skills through mind–body union. Athletes, dancers, surgeons, and craftspeople exhibit well-developed bodily kinesthetic intelligence.

7. Linguistic Intelligence (Word Smart)

Linguistic intelligence is the ability to think in words and to use language to express and appreciate complex meanings. Linguistic intelligence allows us to understand the order and meaning of words and to apply meta-linguistic skills to reflect on our use of language. Linguistic intelligence is the most widely shared human competence and is evident in poets, novelists, journalists, and effective public speakers. Young adults with this kind of intelligence enjoy writing, reading, telling stories or doing crossword puzzles.

8. Intra-personal Intelligence ("Self Smart”)

Intra-personal intelligence is the capacity to understand oneself and one’s thoughts and feelings, and to use such knowledge in planning and directioning one’s life. Intra-personal intelligence involves not only an appreciation of the self, but also of the human condition. It is evident in psychologist, spiritual leaders, and philosophers. These young adults may be shy. They are very aware of their own feelings and are self-motivated.

9. Spatial Intelligence (“Picture Smart”)

Spatial intelligence is the ability to think in three dimensions. Core capacities include mental imagery, spatial reasoning, image manipulation, graphic and artistic skills, and an active imagination. Sailors, pilots, sculptors, painters, and architects all exhibit spatial intelligence. Young adults with this kind of intelligence may be fascinated with mazes or jigsaw puzzles, or spend free time drawing or daydreaming.

I get what you're saying.

I propose a new term/approach:
"Edutraining."
Or
"Trainucation."

Back in my hs days, we has a thriving OWA/OWE program. Kids who knew they weren't on a college track got a good general indoctrination in the "Occupational Work Assessment," then matriculated in a pre-trade program called "Occupational Work Education." Machine shop, auto repair, electrician, etc. The school worked hand-in-hand with local business to ensure these kids got off to a good start, post-graduation.

Those kids hit the ground running, with good-paying jobs that put them THOUSANDS of dollars ahead of their college-track counterparts. Raised families. Contributed to the local economy. Started businesses of their own. Now, I don't know if they still do the Vocational Ed thing, but it seems to me that such a program is certainly scalable/adaptable to modern times.

You didn't say one word that wasn't true, arch... but I'm seeing these pivotal days as an opportunity for America to make a paradigm shift- a re-tooling of our national education to fit the demands of the times we now face.

food for thought?

That's one of those things where people have to get tested for, or have somebody else tell them which intelligence thingy they're good at, right?

Is just one example.

I give it to my students on a yearly basis; it helps me best adapt to my kids, and the talents they bring into the classroom.

What's interesting to me is that most people I know are an amalgam of many of these learning modalities. Certain types may predominate a personality, but others exist in enough abundance (or strength) that they can access one of the 'lesser traits,' and still find occupational success.

Very interesting run-down.
Thanks.

I took the test just now. Seems a bit odd.

Tests like these should be taken at face value. They're not bad, but they're designed to draw interest to click on them. That site needs the ad revenue lol.

I'm not implying it's inaccurate.

Swish it's very possible your scores are also the product of maturation with age and your military experience. It probably helped you identify who you are as a man. That'd boost your self intelligence score. I guarantee you interacted with a TON of different people from different backgrounds. That'd boost your social score.

Maybe.

But I'm more interested in your scores bro. I mean bruh, yours were up there. I'm interested in your experiences.

I dont think so because music was at the bottom of my list.

I used to care about music in my younger years. Now I just listen to whatever is on the radio.

Might as well spill the beans on what I do for a living lol

I work in Emergency Management. I've assisted FEMA, Red Cross, and briefly with DHS. The social intelligence doesn't really surprise me. You need to be very confident and well spoken to work in my field. I handle stress extremely well because I've seen some of the nastiest things humanly imaginable. I also volunteer like crazy.

I always know what I'm going to do, how, when, where, and my best skills are time management and preparation. I kind of have to excel at that.

The designing and building part is really fun. The dealing with the public is not so much fun. 99% of my customers are wonderful. The 1% makes me pull my hair out.

But I guess that is the way of any public facing job.

I am not very social, so dealing with rowdy customers is always a challenge for me.

Thank you.

Remember when I said that I work with cops? That was partially true. That list also includes, EMS, Fire, non-profits, and a whoooooole bunch of other agencies in the public sector. Sometimes private sector (mostly contractors).

Honestly, not very long in EM. Maybe 5 years, if you include interning then it's more like 8. It's not something that has been popular until the last 2 decades. 9/11 is what started everything. Hurricane Katrina is what made organizations like FEMA place a heavier emphasis on it. Before these events the government just made the police handle everything. Then reality set in and people realized "oh shoot, those guys might need some help."

I always thought it would be cool to work for fema. In my college years I worked in the FBI command center. We dealt with national issues all the time. Waco. Ruby Ridge. The first bombing of the world trade center. The unabomber. That was a pretty cool job. If it paid better I might still be there.

It was really exciting to be a part of all that. It was probably the most exciting job I ever had. After that I worked for delta as a software developer. I learned a lot working there. It enabled me to work for myself as a game dev. But I will always be fond of my government days. It was very interesting and fun.

I call myself and a lot of my friends "hillbillies" and "rednecks" all the time. To me those two words are something to be proud of, not be ashamed of. I am proud to be both a redneck, and a hillbilly. I have white, black, and yellow friends who are also proud to be both.

Wonderful. However, you clearly missed my intent. Did you read the article? Because if you did, you may have noticed this paragraph:

Quote:
“Humans appear to have some need to look down on someone; there’s just a basic tribalistic impulse in all of us,” Vance recently told The American Conservative. “And if you’re an elite white professional, working-class whites are an easy target: You don’t have to feel guilty for being a racist or a xenophobe. By looking down on the hillbilly, you can get that high of self-righteousness and superiority without violating any of the moral norms of your own tribe.”

That is what I was referring to, sir.

Absolutely.

The pendulum has already begun to swing within the realm of education. Most "vo-tech" training facilities are called "career technical centers" or something similar. Among the students who attend, approximately 50% will head down a college or advanced ed path and the others will work within their training expertise.

Not all students are college material. My son is ADHD and struggles with organizational skills and EFD. It remains to be seen whether he can adapt and or modify his life adequately to enable him to be a successful college candidate. Meantime, he will attend the local technical training facility and get certified in computer information systems and repair.

In fact, many colleges are advising that students learn a trade or skill prior to entering college. This is ideal since many graduates complete their college education with mounds of debt. They may find work in their technical/trade vocation prior to finding work in their college field, thus enabling them to work on their debt.

Many folks, including my son, need this life lesson of "nothing is free in life". You work, and work hard, for what you desire.

Any education is an advantage. Knowledge is key to enabling all citizens to stand on their own and be proud, productive and valued members of our society.

Nice post.

I have a 16 year old nephew. School is hard for him. ADD to boot. He's not going to go to college - that's my guess.

He's working this summer. Bringing home well over $500 a week - working at a grain mill, doing odd jobs, from painting, to helping mechanics fix stuff, pulling weeds, loading trucks, etc etc. He's learning skills that are needed, and pay well.

He's getting an education alright. And setting himself up for a full time job after h.s.
