Browns coach Hue Jackson brushes off Josh McCown trade talks as rumors 6:20 PM ET Tony Grossi ESPN Cleveland Tony Grossi covers the Cleveland Browns for ESPN 850 WKNR. Takeaways from Day 6 of Browns training camp … 1. McCown trade update: Frankly, coach Hue Jackson didn’t do a great job of disputing there is trade conversation with the Cowboys about quarterback Josh McCown. He brushed off reports as “rumors.” “I feel real good about where we are and what we’re doing. Right now, there’s nothing to report or talk about,” Jackson said. The biggest clue that a trade is still possible was this answer in response to a question about keeping McCown informed of the possibility. “I would hope we’d do that for every player. As an organization, we’re very forthcoming. In the end, we’re always going to do what’s best for us but in respect to the player.” 2. Lineup change up front: Alvin Bailey, who has held down the starting right tackle position since OTAs and minicamp, has been displaced. The new starter is not rookie Shon Coleman, but the other rookie draft pick – Spencer Drango, fifth-rounder from Baylor. Drango worked himself in OTAs to second behind Bailey, but was getting reps at left tackle in training camp. That changed Thursday when he was with the starters at right tackle. “I’m going to continue to make moves as we go. I’m going to put the best five guys out there, mix and match, and see how we can become better. Nothing’s etched in stone,” Jackson said. As to why Drango and not Coleman, the coach referred to Coleman not being available in OTAs because of recovery from offseason knee surgery. Further evidence that once an incoming rookie loses time in the beginning stages of first exposure to the NFL, he falls way behind. 3. Getting their kicks: Although incumbent kicker Travis Coons would seem to have “a leg up” on seeing a second season with the Browns, Patrick Murray is a legitimate challenger to him. It should come down to the preseason games, of course, but in a recent practice Coons hit the crossbar on a 50-yard attempt and Murray cleared it by plenty. Murray, 24, had a 20-for-24 season on field goals for Tampa Bay in 2014. He was injured in 2015 and waived in May after the Bucs drafted a kicker, and then Murray had knee surgery. “A guy that kicks the ball very consistent. I think he has a good kick off leg, also,” said special teams coordinator Chris Tabor. “A guy that’s obviously been successful in the league before he got injured, but I see no ill effects from his injury. He’s totally healthy, hitting the ball well, quick to the football, does a nice job getting it up -- so he’s doing a nice job.” 4. Observations: The Browns have their only evening practice of summer on Friday, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Most of the practice will be devoted to a full scrimmage with live tackling. Should be interesting … Center Cam Erving (elbow) didn’t practice, but right guard John Greco practiced for the first time after missing with a hamstring injury … Receiver Taylor Gabriel was helped off the field with an undisclosed injury … Maybe I was too hasty classified Terrelle Pryor merely as a “specialty receiver.” He was working with the first team on Thursday, indication that the coaches see him potentially as an every-down receiver … With fullback Malcolm Johnson (concussion) out, tight end E.J. Bibbs has benefitted as a combo tight end/fullback. http://www.espn.com/blog/cleveland/post/...talks-as-rumors

Bailey must not have been playing very well

Or Drango was just playing better.

Browns training camp snapshot (Day 6): Rookie Spencer Drango works at right tackle with first-team offense By Nate Ulrich Beacon Journal sports writer Thursday’s developments • Rookie fifth-round draft pick Spencer Drango practiced at right tackle with the first-team offensive line for the first time since camp started. As a result, Alvin Bailey didn’t practice as the starting right tackle for the first time this summer. Bailey worked with the second unit at right tackle and right guard. Drango had been toiling at left and right tackle with the backups. • “I’m going to put the best five guys out there and continue to mix and match and see how can we become better,” coach Hue Jackson said. “If somebody can do something better for our football team and they’re deserving, then that’s what we’ll do.” • It’s also noteworthy that Drango received the nod to work with the starters before rookie third-round pick Shon Coleman, who sat out all spring while rehabbing a surgically repaired knee before working at right tackle with the second unit. “[Drango has] done more football [than Coleman]. He probably understands the system a little bit better,” Jackson said. “I think Shon is working his tail off, but he’s getting his legs back underneath him.” • Starting right guard John Greco practiced for the first time since camp started. He was limited. He had been sitting out with an injured hamstring. “Week 1, I’m ready to go,” he said. “There’s no question about it. I’m planning on being 100 percent way before then.” • Quarterback Josh McCown and the second-team offense stole the show during the two-minute drill. Here was the scenario: The Browns were behind 27-23 with 58 seconds left and had the ball at their 40-yard line. On third-and-2, McCown threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to tight end E.J. Bibbs with no time left. • The first-team offense ran the same drill, but its drive ended when safety Ibraheim Campbell breaking up a pass from quarterback Robert Griffin III. Campbell should have intercepted the pass, but he dropped it. The third-team offense and quarterback Cody Kessler didn’t move the ball much at all. • In an 11-on-11 red-zone drill, tight end Connor Hamlett caught two touchdown passes from McCown. Wide receiver Rannell Hall caught a short pass from Griffin, spun away from linebacker Joe Schobert and scored a 20-yard touchdown. • Bibbs and wide receiver Taylor Gabriel left practice with heat-related issues. Defensive end John Hughes, wide receiver Marlon Moore and offensive lineman Michael Bowie missed practice for personal reasons. Left tackle Joe Thomas rested during practice. • Center Cameron Erving (elbow) and wide receiver Andrew Hawkins (hamstring) were sidelined with the injuries they suffered Tuesday. Jackson said Erving will “be fine.” Hawkins said he “tweaked” his hamstring and would “be back sooner than later.” Other injuries: Receiver Josh Gordon (quadriceps), cornerbacks Joe Haden (ankle) and Trey Caldwell (hamstring), safety Don Jones (leg), defensive lineman Kyle Rose (hamstring), fullback Malcolm Johnson (concussion) and tight ends Randall Telfer (right knee wrapped) and Seth DeValve (hamstring) sat out. Nose tackle Nile Lawrence-Stample (undisclosed injury) left practice early with an athletic trainer. Friday’s schedule: Practice from 6-8:30 p.m. will feature a scrimmage with live tackling. http://www.ohio.com/sports/browns/browns...ffense-1.702444

The Seahawks let him go for a reason and not because he was good. This team needs to stop using the Hawks as a pipeline. Quistan was garbage likewise Turbin. RT is gonna be a revolving door this season Watch defenses put their best pass Rusher over RT this season.

Bailey sucked at tackle, he is RG only. Drango could be a good one at RT, he can pass block but his run blocking aint much.

OO and the RG position should be opened up for competition as well. I like Greco as that 6th man more than I do as a starter at RG.

I like Greco starting at RG much better than having young, inexperienced guys at C, RG and RT. At least Greco the vet can help player/coach the guys on either side of him.

That is far from the truth. Maybe not all, but a good deal. IMO. Young guys with speed and a desire to get to the ball goes a long way.

I am sure we have at least 11 posters on this board who would give it their all on every play. They would get torched. Not being cruel. Just the way it is.

A few thoughts generated by the article:
--Malcolm Johnson was dreadful last year. Hopefully, the new guy supplants him.
--RT will be a problem position all year long.
--Center will be a problem position most of the year.
--Greco is extremely underrated by most people on this board. Right now, he is our second best offensive lineman. Check out that chart that ed posted on another thread. I'm not the only one who believes in Greco.

Where I disagree is you comparing the guys on our team to 11 posters on this board. No doubt I am talking about players with the the ability to be considered for the NFL. I guess we will find out if our D is as doom and gloom as you suspect.

Bailey must not have been playing very well Decent Run Blocker (Bailey) but probably has short comings in his pass protection and speed getting to the 2nd level on run plays.
I think Bailey is a RG not RT and was out of position.
Coleman...as the article stated lost some time with his rehabe stint. Drago is an excellent pass blocker.
You can teach a pass blocker how to Run block but its a tough task to teach a run blocker how to pass block efficiently.
Drago probably can get the edge better...and definitely is a much better pass blocker.
jmho - Coleman will get his reps on Wednesdays when Joe Thomas takes his day off...
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

I've never seen Durango, so I can't comment on him. I vaguely remember Coleman, but not much.

And for the record, I know that logic is on your side. No doubt the odds say we will not be very good. That said, I sometimes go with the long odds...especially when talking about the Browns, this time of year. I figure that if I am wrong, there will be many hours to think about how bad we looked as I drive back home from Cleveland after games.

Browns Quarterback Tracker: Day 6 7:39 AM ET Jason Gibbs Editor's note: Jason Gibbs covers the Cleveland Browns for ESPN 850 WKNR. Welcome to Browns training camp day 6…practicing on the sun. Or at least that’s how it felt. Brutal heat and humidity today for the troops who are once again in pads. Today begins a big three day stretch in the development of this team. As always here are the guidelines as we follow the quarterbacks. We will only compare the QB numbers of all four quarterbacks in 11 on 11 drills and 7 on 7 drills. While there will be other drills (one on one’s for example) that we will show you throughout camp, the only numbers that will count in terms of completion percentage are in the drills mentioned above. Here’s what happened and AS ALWAYS, these numbers are unofficial. In the event we miss a pass or a catch is ruled a non-catch and we miss it don’t shoot the messenger. 3:24pm…Stretch time. 3:31pm…QB/RB/WR drills. 3:57pm…Inside offense vs. defense on one field and DB vs. WR on the other field. 4:05pm…Offense and defense shell drills. 4:11pm…11 on 11 (1 minute left drill). 4:11pm- RG3 (Numbers – 3/5 passing with one run) Play #1 – Completion to RB Duke Johnson Play #2 – Completion to WR Terrelle Pryor Play #3 – Incompletion (RG3 throws the ball away) Play #4 – QB run Play #5 – Completion to TE Connor Hamlett Play #6 – Incompletion (should have been intercepted) 4:17pm- Josh McCown (Numbers – 3/4 passing with one run) Play #1 – Incompletion to WR Ricardo Louis Play #2 – Completion to WR Darius Jennings Play #3 – Completion to TE E.J. As I believe Y-Town pointed out, the numbers are hard to judge without context, but I do like seeing the recent consistency with RGIII, and the incremental uptick in completion percentage.

I'm not the only one who believes in Greco. Speaking as quite possibly the original pimp of my fellow former Boardman Spartan, John Greco, I think that you're right. My only concern, as he gets older, is injuries. He injured a knee last year, and has already pulled a hamstring this pre-season. That really is the thing I worry about that could derail his career. My take is that he's overrated by many, underrated by many. He's not great, but he sure as hell aint bad. It was a great trade by Heckert (a conditional 7th rounder) and this guy has been a plug n play when healthy. I think he is better in the zone scheme and was helped with Mack next to him (as would anyone) so we'll see how he does this year but he can play in any scheme. He's upgradable for sure, but I don't think we need to be actively looking for that.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Awesome stuff from Gibbs. I've never seen camp covered w/ stats w/ this level of commitment. Kudos. Giving fans, especially those outside the area insight.
In the spirit of give an inch...what are the chances we(fans) could get Gibbs to make some intern compile the targets / at least the catches for the receivers, similar to how they are compiled for the QBs?
I don't have facebook or I would have left a comment asking for it.
That would be awesome....
From these numbers it seem like: o Hamlett is up w/ the 1st unit and Bibbs w/ 2nd unit o Gabriel and Higgins are getting reps w/ the 1s and 2s o Louis and Jennings are getting reps w/ the 2s o Rannell Hall is getting reps w/ 1s
Who are TE JP Holtz and RB Glenn Winston?

Who are TE JP Holtz and RB Glenn Winston? Holtz is a UDFA TE from Pitt we signaed after the draft. Winston has been bigfoot for the team the last two seasons.

Another roster move for the Browns: DL Kenton Adeyemi in, OL Michael Bowie placed on reserve/retired
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Rookie Corey Coleman is the Browns training camp standout of week one – / 7 Print Email Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com By Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com Follow on Twitter on August 05, 2016 at 5:00 AM, updated August 05, 2016 at 5:03 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio — Browns rookie receiver Corey Coleman has been bringing it like Beckham in the first week of training camp. When he's not catching deep balls from Robert Griffin III or displaying some nifty "toe drag swag'' along the sidelines, he's burning Justin Gilbert for a touchdown in one-on-one drills and then trash-talking him on the trip back from the end zone. Plenty of players have stood out in the first week of camp, but none more than the No. 15 overall pick out of Baylor — especially when the sirens wail and it's 'go' time. "He's scored a bunch when we've had some of this live stuff,'' quarterback Josh McCown said. "He's done a really good job. He's coming in and working. He's learning the system and terminology. A lot of times, with young guys while they're learning, their skillset will diminish a bit. "The cool thing about Corey is he's still learning, but when the ball touches his hands, he's exactly why you picked him. He's shown it's not too big for him when the bullets start flying and we start playing. When the ball touches his hands, he's about scoring and getting in the end zone. That's impressive." Corey Coleman: An emerging star at Cleveland Browns training camp Coleman's nose for the end zone hasn't been lost on top offensive assistant Pep Hamilton, who takes over a points-starved offense that finished 30th in the NFL with 28 touchdowns last season. "He can score the ball,'' said Hamilton. "We saw it a couple days ago in our scrimmage when he caught a hitch route down inside the red zone area. He made two guys miss and he scored the football. That's what we're going to need him to do. We need a big-play threat or two or three on the perimeter, and we feel like he's the guy who can do those things." As big a threat at Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who lit up the NFL in 2014 with 91 receptions for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns en route to NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and a Pro Bowl berth? "That's a hard thing to answer because I haven't played an NFL game,'' said Coleman, the 2015 Biletnikoff winner for the nation's best receiver. "But Odell is a great receiver and he's done some unbelievable things in the NFL.'' Receiver Andrew Hawkins, who's studied the best receivers in the NFL, sees greatness in the 5-11,185-pound wideout. In fact, he compares him to Steve Smith, the five-time Pro Bowler formerly of the Panthers and now with the Ravens. Smith, 37, is 5-9, 195 and had similar explosive speed in his prime. "Corey Coleman is an incredible talent,'' Hawkins said. "He reminds me a lot of Steve Smith, which is in my opinion one of the top three receivers to ever play the game of football. I've always been a huge Steve Smith fan. But he has a lot of that skillset. He has to work on some of his technique stuff, but his effort is what's special to me because a lot of time young guys, they don't always come in knowing that above all else, give effort. "Your effort and your talent will mend the wound of what you don't know technique-wise until you figure it out because the NFL is a different game, especially in the offense he was in at Baylor. But Corey has come in and worked his butt off, whether's it's blocking backside, whether it's finishing to the end zone, whether it's being the playmaker he was brought here to be, and I'm excited for what his career is going to be. He's been incredible so far.'' Coleman got to show off a little on Tuesday in front of his former Baylor coach Art Briles, who visited his four Bears in Browns camp: Coleman, right tackle Spencer Drango, Robert Griffin III and Josh Gordon. "You'll think he's one of the best to ever put on a Browns uniform,'' said Briles, who was fired by Baylor amid the university's sexual assault scandal involving athletes. "That guy's special now. He's dynamite in a package. He's tough, he's explosive and he's a fierce competitor, and that's really kind of what sets him apart. He loves to win.'' The competitive fire burned Tuesday when Coleman put a move on Gilbert and beat him easily for a touchdown in one-on-one drills. Skipping past the third-year cornerback on the way back from the end zone, Coleman talked some smack at Gilbert and the two went facemask-to-facemask and had to be separated by coach Hue Jackson after a little teaching moment on the field. "We were just competing,'' Coleman said. "Me and Justin Gilbert, we've known each other for a while. He went to (Oklahoma State). I played him in college when I was younger. It just got emotional. It's just loving the game, being passionate about the game. But everything has cleared over fine." Sparks fly between Corey Coleman and Justin Gilbert at Cleveland Browns training camp Coleman spent part of his offseason working out with Robert Griffin III in Los Angeles, where they worked on their timing and chemistry. The effort has paid off. The two have been connecting well in camp, and treating fans to some big plays. "It builds trust,'' said Griffin. "It builds cameraderie to know when he's going to be coming out of his breaks. He made the effort to come out, to come workout when he could be off. He could be in the Bahamas or something, sipping on piña coladas or whatever he wanted to do. He came out to work. I think that's important for him, for us as a team.'' It helps that Griffin got to know Coleman at Baylor. "I was leaving Baylor when he was a recruit coming in and I went back to Baylor a bunch, so I know Corey really well,'' he said. "I know what he's about. I know what drives him.'' Coleman has about another week before Gordon returns to the practice field and tries to re-establish himself as the Browns No. 1 receiver. "I've got to compete and I only can control what I can control,'' he said. "I believe the coach is going to put the guys he needs to be to successful on the field. I've got to stay consistent and show them each and every day that I can be the guy.'' He's off to a rousing start. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2016/08/rookie_corey_coleman_is_the_br.html

#Browns signed DL Adeyemi and put OL Michael Bowie on reserve/retired. After 1 week of camp it looks like the team is fairly comfortable with the OL prospects and more concerned with the DL prospects.

#Browns signed DL Adeyemi and put OL Michael Bowie on reserve/retired. Hardly any surprise that Bowie retired. He has tried to get back to being able to play for a couple of years now, and has been unable to make much progress towards playing. It has to suck being forced into retirement by injury before you ever even got a chance to play at all in the NFL.
