I was too. She's been through a long journey ... and to tie it like that is incredible

It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great!

I'm not sure if there was a problem with the NBC feed or the feed that they were broadcasting to Directv or what, but we could not watch any of the games last night. Our feed kept freezing, going blank and jumping. It sucked!! But, at least I got to watch the Tribe put the hammer down on the Angels.

This picture captures the essence of Equestrian Dressage.

No jumps, no speed, no tight maneuvers.

I'd best describe it as "Horse Ballet". Several riders were in their 50s.

Why?

Don't have to understand it. Equestrian Dressage is a weird Olympic sport.
I don't doubt it's fun. I don't doubt it's hard.

Here's an image in the heat of competition.

So yeah, I need to mock it.

My only issue with it is that it is just animal training, not a test of an athlete performing, which is what the Olympics is about. The horse is the "athlete", if anything, and that's just silly for the Olympics (IMO).

IMO All team sports (Basketball, Hockey, Rugby, Soccer, Volleyball, etc) should be eliminated from the Olympics. That would give ample time for more coverage. Heck we see those sports year round anyways.

Perhaps, but that doesn't change my opinion.

It simply is not a sport and it certainly (again, in my opinion) is not an activity that measures a human athlete. It is the horses competing.

May as well put horse racing in the Olympics, too.

It takes a tremendous amount of rider skill to ride a horse at that level. You have no idea.

So I will give you a simplistic example.

This is Totilas. A freak of nature physically gifted more than any horse in the history of dressage.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT6Yn7SLkmQ

He was the best horse in the world. Then he was sold for 9 million. And guess what, the new rider can't ride him worth crap. This horse never showed well again. He was retired to stud.

It just goes to show how important the rider is. If a horse that physically gifted can't be ridden well. It is not just about training the horse. It takes much skill. Horses are not cars that you just get on and say Go.

Chariot racing first started in the Olympics around 700 BC... I think there is precedence for having events where the horse is "the athlete"...

Honestly though, it's sort of auto-racing before cars were invented. Might as well make auto-racing an event too, if Equestrian events are allowed.

I’ve really enjoyed watching the archery. I’ve probably logged a solid hour.

It seems like they’re shooting from ~ 50 feet away.

But it’s actually 70 meters (~229.6 feet) That’s like standing on the goal-line and hitting a 6” circle (bullseye - 10 points) at the far 25 yard-line (~75 yards)

American Brady Ellison just knocked-off Takaharu Furukawa, the 2012 silver medalist. Brady’s headed for the Individual semifinal.

You guys know that speed walking is an event, right? If you guys want to talk about uselessness at the Olympics then that's where it's at. I can think of no advantages/athletic ability walking has above running, besides trying to discreetly lose a chase in a crowded city.

So, all those years I've been going for walks, I've actually been training for the Olympics?

These women are walking 20k faster than I could run it in my prime. 20k = 12.4 miles.

The walkers are around 6 minutes/mile.

It doesn't really matter to me, many on here have a very narrow definition of what constitutes a "sport" anyway.. then there is also the notion that if something isn't big in the United States, then what's the point of having it in the Olympics...

Yeah.

And there's also this notion that if something is big somewhere else, it ought to be here as well.

Dogs can be trained to do incredibly "athletic" stunts.

Monkeys too.

And lions, and tigers, and bears,

Formula 1 racing comes to mind. They run exclusively road races/tracks.

Nascar runs 4 of those per year. Attendance is abysmal.

When the IRL (mostly ovals - like 90-95% oval racing) joined/merged with...........whatever the u.s. version of F 1 was, they went to about a 50/50 split of oval to road courses.

Aside from the Indy 500, what have you ever heard of the IRL in the last 10 or so years?

(and I'll grant this, nascar's viewership and race attendance has been going down over all, as well.)

Yes, Phelps is from Baltimore... They actually stopped the game and took an unofficial time out last night during the Ravens game when Phelps was about to swim so the whole stadium could watch it on the jumbotron..

Hate the Ravens, but that's a pretty cool thing to do.
