Prominent digital journalist pulls out of Milwaukee: ‘For those who are perceivably white, it is just not safe to be here’

Michelle Mark Politics  Aug. 16, 2016, 4:00 AM

Under armed police personnel a young man is rushed into a hospital in Milwaukee, Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016.

A well-known journalist who frequently covers civil unrest across the country has decided to leave Milwaukee due to “racial tensions” he observed while covering the protests Sunday night.

“For those who are perceivably white, it is just not safe to be here,” Tim Pool said in a YouTube video Monday.

Protests in Milwaukee first erupted over the weekend, after a police officer fatally shot an armed black man on Saturday.

Pool is among several journalists covering the uprising to express concern for his safety over the weekend, after the protests turned violent.

Pool said during Sunday’s protests that he heard members of the crowd yell comments such as, “F—k white people” and “What are these white people doing here?” and observed one reporter being grabbed, and another being hit in the head by a protester who then attempted to incite others to attack the reporters.

Pool, the director of media innovation for Fusion, gained prominence in recent years for covering protests such as Occupy Wall Street in 2011 and Ferguson, Missouri in 2014, using aerial drones and live-streaming.

Pool said in the video that his decision to pull out was finalized when he witnessed a white 18-year-old being shot in the neck during the protests.

Milwaukee police have confirmed that an 18-year-old man sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the neck, but have not specified his race.

“When you hear a group directing their anger and hate towards white people, and then see several white people being attacked, and then finally an 18-year-old white kid is shot in the neck, that’s when I’m like, ‘Okay. I shouldn’t be here,’” Pool said.

Pool is not the only reporter to witness tension between reporters and Milwaukee residents in recent days.

BuzzFeed reporter Jim Dalrymple II reported early Monday morning that he was chased by a group of men in a Chevrolet Suburban as he drove back to his hotel. He tweeted that he didn’t know who the men were, and that an armed security guard eventually escorted him from his car into the hotel.

“For those asking, I’m fine. But not going to lie, I’m a bit shaken up from when they started rushing the car. Not sure where that was going,” Dalrymple tweeted.

BuzzFeed told Business Insider they are “continuing to cover this story,” but did not confirm whether Dalrymple will remain in Milwaukee to do so.

Another reporter from the local Fox affiliate WITI tweeted that he cut the station’s broadcast after receiving threats:

Other media outlets have reported that police officers have been targeted with rocks, bricks, and other objects, and several buildings have been burned during the riots.

IIRC the police chief from Milwaukee took part in that forum with Obama ... and he explained this exact scenario

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Wow.

‘For those who are perceivably white, it is just not safe to be here’

perceivably...

'Milwaukee police have confirmed that an 18-year-old man sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the neck'

I'm sure it didn't seem non-life-threatening to the 18 year old.

This country has lost it's mind. - smh

Some will tell you it will stop when cops stop shooting young black men...

Some will tell you it will stop when young black men stop breaking the law...

My opinion is that it will stop when good people stand up and say they have had enough... easier said than done.

Some will say it's also a president pushing the divide and etc.

I just wish the nonsense would stop. There's going to be corrupt people who abuse their authority, anywhere and everywhere. I read an article the other day of the receptionist that stole classified data and sold to Russia.

Every occupation I bet has some form of abuse. Even non profit charities. If we let a handful of bad apples fuel the rage, then we'll never rise up outta this and there will never be peace and yes, the violence will escalate.

When exactly has he done that? I think he has been pretty fair, listened to,and tried to address both sides. Maybe you are just so used to seeing presidents that didnt give a crap about the poor that is shocks you to see a president that tries to work with both.

I don't want to come off offensive but I also didn't want you to think I ignored you, but I'm "done" with political discussion. It just leads to arguments here and truthfully, it just isn't worth it at the end.

I've completly disengaged from it, so... all I can really offer is just pop up a search on Google. But I'm staying outta it lol.

and what? You want my 5 step process to fix the problem? I don't really have one.

but if I was to think about it for just a second..

and... start focusing on right and wrong instead of black and white.
and... form your opinion around the facts instead of selecting facts that match your opinion.
and... respond in a way that might fix the problem, not make it worse.
and... listen and try to understand rather than shouting and insulting.

There's a famous quote by one of the founding fathers that echoes this. Just because we live in America doesn't give you an excuse to be an idiot.

And see, this is a true statement, but what I hate about it is it takes away from the message that carries a lot of truth. There has been/and still is a police brutality issue with police, especially in the inner cities, and I still contend it is a socioeconomic issue more than it is a race issue. I also think it is a double edged sword and there is a respect for the law issue. Especially in the inner city.

It was a black police officer who did the shooting.

"Yes, a black man did the shooting but he was wearing a blue uniform with a badge," she said.

The two knew each other.

Beating up people who had NOTHING to do w/the shooting; robbing store owners who had NOTHING to do w/the shooting; burning down stores owned by people who had NOTHING to do w/the shooting; setting the cars of people who had NOTHING to do w/the shooting; shooting and knifing people who had NOTHING to do w/the shooting, etc, are the acts of a cowardly, hateful, ignorant mob and they need to be stopped.

Not to mention, the guy pulled and pointed a gun at the cops.

But, I suppose that should be overlooked, right?

Have you ever heard of people being paid by websites to troll in order to generate discussion, activity, and traffic to a site? Sometimes I think Purp pays 40, but then I remember Purp is a good guy.

If the thread was about something the KKK did this place would be lit up as cries of Racism and the pointing of fingers would be rampant!

But once again I think we are seeing that Racism is a one way street to some.

Interesting.

Based off this thread, so you do.

You never speak up about anything, really not as far as civil rights, anyway.

It's all good though. You and your clique can have at it.

I am pro self responsibility and accountibility. Thats why you never hear me complaining about people needing handouts. As far as Im concerned handouts can go to the elderly. Working age people can get off their butts and get a job.

Maybe not.

But you thinking that treating people equally is a hand out is also stupid.

What's even more sad is I bet you aren't the only one on this board who views equality as a handout.

I have a few names in mind, they will probably post here later tonight.

I pointed out that I never see you speak out for civil rights.

You responded with your 'handout' post.

So obviously you view civil rights and equality as a handout.

That was your reply.

I haven't shot my wife. So there goes your whitey stuff.

You really lost your edge.
