Wimbley aims to add up sacks as game slows down for him Monday, June 11, 2007 By Steve Doerschuk REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER BEREA The athletic young man addressed Cleveland's topic of the day and man of the hour. "I'm gonna go with the Cavs to win the series," he said. "I think they can get it done. "LeBron? Phenomenal. He's gonna be a Michael Jordan-type, if he's not there already." The young man was Kamerion Wimbley, who may not be the Browns' answer to LeBron James, but might be the most gifted defender the football team has had since its 1999 reappearance. "It's obviously different in basketball," Wimbley said. "There aren't as many guys out there. "I do try to make big plays every time I'm out there. Big plays get everybody hyped up. "But it's more complicated than that." Wimbley was the brightest part of another bad season, delivering a Browns' rookie record of 11 sacks as a rookie first-round pick. Now, the swift outside linebacker with the sunny disposition is intent on being a brighter part of a better year. He's no longer scrambling to make the transition from Florida State defensive end to outside linebacker in a 3-4 pro scheme. "Now I know my responsibility," Wimbley said with an easy smile after a spring practice. "I know precisely where I'm supposed to be. I can get there faster. I'm planning on having more fun instead of doing a lot of thinking. "Brady Quinn told me the speed of the game up here is a lot faster. I told him that's how it seemed when I got here. He'll catch up." General Manager Phil Savage appears to have picked a winner at No. 13 in the 20006 draft. "He had the 62 tackles and 11 sacks," Savage says. "I think the great thing about him is that you can count on him. Ozzie (Newsome) used to say, 'Hey, Sav, sometimes it is not about pure ability, it is about dependability.' "Kamerion has that dependability factor. It's just in his makeup. "He's going to get more attention this year. They'll know where he is. That should help our overall defense because we added Antwan Peek. We've got Willie McGinest. "Kamerion? He has a bright future for sure." The Browns will do their final spring honing of the defense in a minicamp Tuesday through Thursday. They're trying to build a pass rush around Wimbley. As quarterback-chasing outside linebackers, McGinest has a notorious past; Peek might have a nice upside; Wimbley is the marked man. "You're facing NFL-caliber players," he said. "Coaches are smart. If you're getting a lot of sacks, coaches are gonna start scheming up." Still, he's not backing off the goal he set for himself as a rookie, a sack a game. In his daydreams, he thinks about 20. "You're just throwing a goal out there," Wimbley said. "I like to set the standard really high. If you fall below it, you can still be good. If you actually hit that standard, you can possibly be great." http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?Category=17&ID=359332&r=0&subCategoryID=

Wimbley's great.
He could really make a huge difference for our team next year. He's unbelievable, and IMO he is capable of being a top OLB on our team for years. This is his second year, he's still improving and may be he'll get a few more or as many sacks and some fumbles and 3rd down stops may be an interception or two. What those stats come down to is an impact player who is a game changer. Those guys really make a difference, and I think Wimbley all ready is one of them. Hope the guy will be a Brown his entire career of many winning seasons

I'm just glad he got out of college early.

What's he doing talking about 20 sacks? He shouldn't do that, that's ridiculous - and that Keith Bullock from the Titans, he had the nerve to say on NFLN that he wouldn't be happy with an 8-8 record - gee, the nerve of these 2 guys.

To improve his sacks and pressures he needs to develop more moves , and get stronger. It will also help if Rac moves him around on the line..not just on one side..

It's kind of hard to move him around much, because right now he is a liability against the run. If you were to put him on the strong side, he would be facing more double teams [T and TE] and he simply doesn't have the bulk or strength to hold up to that kind of pounding. He would also have to release and cover the TE on many occasions and he really isn't that good at pass defense. Basically, he is a pass rusher and they have him in the right spot for that. I do see him improving his play against the run and I think he'll probably get better in coverage. He seems to be a hard working guy who does what it takes to improve himself. But, I think he'll always be a pass rusher first. And that's fine. I also know for a fact that his teammates like him. He isn't boastful in the locker room. He doesn't put others down. He actually listens to the coaches and vets. He attends meetings and practices and even gets there on time. He doesn't act like he is superior to them and he sure as hell doesn't call them out. He also practices hard and tries to learn the playbook. And best of all.........he didn't make a TV show about himself as rookie.

I would not expect anything "less" from Wimbley.
Wimbley setting high goals for himself and working hard to try to attain those goals....if that is what works for Wimbley, fine with me.
The Browns are in need leadership from the younger players and the more players that step forward to lead, the better. Wimbley has all the tools to back up his vision. Hopefully that attitude is contagious and others put pressure on themselves to try to achieve lofty goals too.

I see a lot of great pass rushers get moved around from side to side so opposing offenses can't account for them, and it's usually done before the snap count. Actually Rac did that with Wimbley late in the year and it had some success.

I think one of his best blitzes came when he shifted to the middle and went right up the center against the Raiders.

Wimbley should go to Oz with Dorothy and ask the Wizard for some pass coverage skills...love the guy, has a big future, but he's still pretty one dimensional.

I think most OLB's are known for their rushing skills than their pass coverage... thats why they are OLB's... otherwise he would be an MLB...
just give the guy his props with no buts included...

He still has to be able to play pass coverage. Wimbley is great upfield straight ahead player, but he's deficient in his pass drops. If teams figure out that he's never dropping back in coverage and only rushing, they can nullify him.
And are you saying all OLB's? Or 3-4 OLB's?

think most OLB's are known for their rushing skills than their pass coverage I disagree in part. 34 OLB are known more for that because their hybrids..too small to play DE.. Usually 43 OLB 's are speedier and have better pass coverage skills, because they covered TE's/RB's and slot recievers in college.

Of course that's where he was most deficient, after all, it was his first year trying to drop in coverage. No one develops all in one year. Teams knew he was one dimensional and knew he was our only pass rusher they had to worry about and he still rattled off 11 sacks. Kid is good, I'm sure he's working on his drops as well. Give him a couple years (realistically) to get used to dropping back in coverage

I will take a one dimensional player over a no dimensional player (Couch, Warren, Brown Green and Faine)
Players do develop. There is generally a pretty big jump from year 1 to year 2.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!
