Hmmmmm... I know he slacked off on that play in preseason and didn't go for the tackle, but really?

Punting is going to be important for us, and he was the best.

I guess he should have tried to tackle that punt returner this past Friday. Then again, maybe not, he gets to go play for a championship caliber team.

Something tells me our front office didn't like the idea of paying a punter nearly $3M.

Carolina acquired veteran Andy Lee in a trade with the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a fourth-round draft choice in 2018 and punter Kasey Redfern. The Panthers also received a 2017 seventh-round pick from the Browns.

Lee is a three-time Pro Bowler and first-team All Pro selection. He ranks sixth in NFL history with a 46.2 gross punting average. He also ranks ninth all-time with 325 punts inside the 20-yard line.

Lee, a former sixth-round pick by San Francisco in 2004, punted in every game for the 49ers through the 2014 season. He was traded to the Browns prior to the 2015 season.

Last year, the Westminster, S.C., native set a single-season Browns record with a 46.7-yard gross average.

Punters are pretty easy to replace and he was due to make $3M. Also, the coach chewed him out the last game for not hustling (who knows how much that had to do with this).

Damn, we got a 4th round pick (in 2018). Impressive.

this is dumb, we are in total tank mode...literally our most productive player.. I have zero confidence in this FO right now

if this is true... we fleeced them for a 4th 2 years from now and got a punter out of it. I wonder what 7th round pick we traded to them.


BTW, We traded a 7th a year ago for him.

Sorry but replacing a punter with almost a 50 yard net average is not easy to replace

If Lee hustles and makes an effort to tackle that punt returner, I'm confident he's still here. The Browns just made an example out of him.

Look at this way from a positive angle...a lesser punter than Lee will create shorter field position for the opposing team, thus allowing the opponent to score more quickly and getting our offense back on the field faster. Lee would have caused long, extended drives that still would have resulted in points for the opponent.

Wow, I knew that we were going to get younger, but I thought that Lee was fairly safe.

If I have more than 5 years experience, I am not looking to buy a home in the Cleveland area right now.

I love Andy, but a 4th rounder for a punter is a damn steal.

Lee's net average last year was 40.1 (15th best in the league).

46 yard gross average whatever...both the gross and net were browns records...and thats saying something for as much as we punt, and he looked even better this year..60 and 70 yard punts

my thought on that is if you are the only person at your position on a team, you're pretty damn good at your job, i'm not sure laying out to make a tackle in a preseason game is a good business decision...if it was during the season yeah, i get the anger. But its stupid, it wasn't like he was competing for something. All the more reason they just need to get rid of preseason all together

So if we are unloading all players who don't tackle and lack some hustle . .. .

Jim Tressel would not approve of this move. (In case you're wondering why, JT was once quoted as saying that the punt was the most important play in football.)

Honestly I didnt like the effort by Kruger in preseason and hue would have cut Lee on the spot if he had GM duties. Add in k1 williams not wantting to play in a game and u can see why some of these decisions are being made.

I don't give a crap about the effort on the punt return. I would have told him to get the hell out of the way, it's the preseason. Maybe real coaches wouldn't say that, but that's me.

I'm happy we got Lee for a 7th in 2015 and just upgraded him into a 4th rounder in 2018. Man, if we ever learn how to draft, we'll be great by the end of this decade. #SuperBowl2020OrBust

I think Hue needed to make these moves in order to get the young kids to buy in. If you want to be on this team you gotta play hard every snap.

I'd grant the jury is still out on 2016 draftees and Campbell, but the rest are a fairly underwhelming group. Cameron had a good year, and Benjamin gave us a few exciting moments, but otherwise a lot of jag's. Meantime, we gave up a punter that could kick the schnikees out of the ball, and get you out of the hole from anywhere on the field. For a 2018 4th round pick. Yippy-ki-yay.

hue's sending a message too here ... you better play hard

Kind of funny because I was just talking to a guy that I work with who was at the Panthers vs Patriots game and he was telling me how their punter tracked down a guy and made a tackle and I was telling him how Lee gave up and didn't try to make the tackle... an hour later we traded punters.

I think this is very much about making a statement.

I saw Beau Bell play recently on TV. He was dominating at the Arena Football League level.

I am shocked at how some people are predicting 0-16 because we traded away our punter.

I am re-watching the game, and when Lee came off the field, Hue was absolutely not happy with Lee. Hue was right in his face.

Yeah, and I think he was also not happy with Kruger's coasting this preseason ... well, he was either coasting or just that bad ... either way, it's a ticket out

I sometimes wonder if the Haslams are trying to make this team so bad in an attempt to move the team.
