More excuses that a punter should have risked a huge injury in a game that doesn't even count and trying to suggest that a punter with over a 50 yard average is easily replaced.

We're tanking and nothing said will change that.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

There's obviously more than meets the eye. If Lee jogs off, gets reamed and says "sorry coach" - we're not reading this thread. Maybe he's been a jack-a$$ before, during and after that return.

If I'm in charge, I trade him to a team equally as bad (if there is such a thing). Last thing I'm doing is trading him to a SB contender. I'll sit him on the bench and eat the salary first. That's just me, I'm a professional idiot.

Furthermore, most fans and the idiots on talk radio VASTLY underrate the importance of a good kicking game and certainly underestimate just how big the punter is in regards to affecting the game.

Now, the geniuses on this board wanna tell us that Andy Lee isn't tough enough to be a Brown, but is tough enough for the Panthers who had the best record in the league and were in the Super Bowl last year.

Yeah......okay. crazy

I know I haven't been on these boards in awhile...

(Completely discouraged with this teams moves in FA and the draft)

Getting the feeling this is a completely cheap team with cheap intentions...

Yeah Yeah...trading away players for draft picks...is since when you can acquire good-very good to even possible elite talent with those draft picks, however this team cant even draft a good FB let alone a good-very good any type of player...We continually strip any good-very good players, or fail to resign any of our good-very good players...we have the worst roster in the NFL and it isnt even close...

Excuse my excitement for another 3-4 win season....this organization is a joke...end of story

If Lee hustles and makes an effort to tackle that punt returner, I'm confident he's still here. The Browns just made an example out of him.

my thought on that is if you are the only person at your position on a team, you're pretty damn good at your job, i'm not sure laying out to make a tackle in a preseason game is a good business decision...if it was during the season yeah, i get the anger. But its stupid, it wasn't like he was competing for something. All the more reason they just need to get rid of preseason all together

There is no such thing as a "business decision" in football. Or rather there SHOULDN'T be. You say he made a business decision? Great. The Browns just made one too. They pay a hell of a lot less for a punter and get a 4th round pick to boot. Sounds like a better business decision than half assing a play....

Or maybe the tackle didn't have anything to do with him being traded at all and we didn't want to pay a punter $3M on a crappy team.

While I agree the punter is important he's not THAT important to a team that likely won't win more than a game or two anyway..... We are in total rebuild mode. They may not SAY that but after last week it seems pretty obvious. We have a hell of a lot bigger probllems than a punter. They got a 4th for him and the Panthers punter to hold down the position until we can find a young prospect.....

They want to rebuild the team their way and anyone that doesn't fit is gone.... Until we see the finished product it's difficult to judge good or bad.....

Perhaps he gave Hue Jaskson some lip for chewing him out? We have no idea what happened behind the scenes.....

Actually, I do. Just like, I believe Kruger has been half assing it this year and its the reason he is gone as well. Saving money was just the bonus.

Exactly. We have no idea what happened behind cloed doors. Hell, maybe he jumped on Hue for chewing him out? Or maybe he demanded a trade? Or like you say, maybe the front office decided 3 million a year for a punter doesn't make sense on a team in full on rebuild mode..... Either way we got a 4th round pick. Not bad.

If they did trade him simply because of that play - it's ludicrous. He made an example of him when he got to the sideline. You see lackadaisical play every day in every sport, and YES, it is the preseason. My next move after the sideline charade is to call him into my office and let him know that he is a veteran and I expect him to set an example... Since he chose not to, I had no choice. Not a formal apology for "undressing" him, but letting him know why it happened. I tell him if he doesn't want to tackle in preseason - show up three days early and practice tripping over his own feet so at least it looks legit. thumbsup

I think it's two fold. We got good value for Lee. But it also served as a notice about effort.

Kruger's was both a business decision, but also another reminder that you must perform. Kruger had either been half-butting it all preseason, or he was really that bad .... either way, it's time to go then

We were going to use that 7th anyway so we improved it to a 4th where there may be better talent.

Then we sent a veteran kicker to a contender and took their untested 3rd year kicker because we have time to replace him before we contend. Meanwhile saving more money.

Then we also get the added bonus of looking tough on those who don't sacrifice for the good of the team. Makes perfect sense to me.

Wait just a minute, please?

Would you consider Carolina a Super Bowl contender?

If no, our conversation is done.

If yes, why would they trade a 4th round pick for Lee and throw in their punter?

Why would they not keep their 4th round pick and their punter if both are so important?

Sometimes, I think you guys don't understand why some teams win and others continue to lose.

Carolina traded because it was a upgrade. We traded a guy because he didn't try to make a tackle in a POS game that 10 others couldn't make a tackle.

Huge gets a downgrade IMO. I hope he isn't like Butch, who let his ego intefere with making sound football decisions.

This team is going to have a hard time winning games with or without lee.

As I said with all of the other older players .... they aren't still being to be good when this team (if everything goes right) becomes a good team. We might s well add value for the older guys. I see no way that this team has a winning record before 2018, at the best. Lee would be 35 by then. I think that we can all agree that even the best P or PK can have their leg fall off all of a sudden when they get older.

Wait, do people actually think we traded the punter because he didn't make a tackle?

This is exactly what an analytical front office would do. Trade a player who is not very valuable (a punter) for something more valuable.

Maybe so....I can't argue the point. I just think we need the best punter we can find and 3 mil is chump change, especially when you are already a zillion dollars under the cap.

Well Carolina went 15-1 last year in regular season, so yes they are a contender. And a punter like Lee might be the final piece to a limited window run because they have 1=2 years to get that SB win... So a fourth would be less valuable to them than to us, while a good punter is more valuable to them because they don't have time to develop a guy or find a better one.

It's really not rocket science.

Andy Lee is an outstanding punter (for distance). He was traded because he consistently outkicked the coverage...

Just plain stupidity by the moneyball group, but hey they are getting most fans on board with extra late round picks!!! WHOHOOOOO! I'm excited for the extra fourth rounder myself. The Browns are the draft kings. Punting was the only freaking thing this team was good at sooo what do they do trade him....this is a Browns move if you've ever seen one.

The Browns are nothing but a damn farm team for the rest of the league, but we should be proud of all the draft picks and the cap money they are saving! Go Browns!

What message is that?

Huh ... Didn't see this one coming .. *L* ..

I wonder what Joe Thomas thinks right about now .. I wonder if he's as thrilled about having Hue here as he was before the draft, FA and now the "trading" season has begun ...

A 4th rounder ... Ya .. Don't get this one .. Like Mr. Peen pointed out ... Ummm ... We actually didn't save 3 mill ..... We saved a mill or two depending on what we got to pay new dude ... But WHO CARES .. We're about 5 major signings under the cap as it is and there no ONE LEFT TO SIGN that's going to cost more than league minimum ... So unless the plan is to turn the entire roster over twice .. I don't even know why what we were paying him even comes up ..

I want my punter to PUNT well .. Tackling's a bonus ...

Oh well .. Not gonna make a difference this year .. So once again .. WHO CARES ..

Just wondering .... Could we have not traded Krueger? ... I'm assuming we could get SUMPTIN for him so there had to be something restricting us trading him .. Salary? .. No trade clause .. Any clues? ..

Seems like we couldn't trade him because the other team would have to take on his full salary

If the Browns had any history of drafting well, I think we'd all be happy with that. However, we gave up a sure-fire cannon leg for, what perhaps may be, but unlikely, a decent pick.

I don't buy it. If it was over the tackle effort, then I really don't buy it. If it's a moneyball/paying a punter 2.83 million, I kinda don't buy it. Least he goes to a team that is instantly a playoff contender.

Best wishes to him. Best punter I've ever seen. Probably will ever see too.

There's a reason that SF gave him up so cheap and it wasn't his ability to punt the ball.

I didn't like that play on Friday not because he didn't make the tackle, but he didn't even try to catch up to the guy. We had a guy trailing that almost caught up. Having the runner at least swerve to avoid Lee would have given the trailer a chance to make the tackle (or as is often the case in those scenarios punch the ball out).

Either way, the front office feels that they can do better and we need to let them have the chance to do so. The kid we got back from Carolina doesn't seem like he's a bad punter at all. What Lee had a 46 yard average and this guy had a 40 yard average? 6 yards can be a lot, but in the end, a first down is still 10 yards from the first play of the series so if we stop them within 10, we're good. (God I wish I thought we could stop them within the first 10...<sigh>)

I like what we got for him. 4th rounder is pretty nice. I don't like the fact that we just let our only real strength leave town.

Oh well.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

That is such a BS statement. The guy had all kinds of kicks downed inside the 20. He had very good hang time.

You need to have good value if you have all the cap space or if you have no cap space. Spending that much on a punter is not good value.

Lee was a damn good punter. If not the Panthers do not give up a 4th for him along with a pretty good young punter. It was a combo of what the panthers were willing to give up along with Hue pretty ticked that has him going to Carolina.
