OK, my internet is crapping out on me as I type. My internet will work fine during the morning, but during the afternoon/evening it's inconsistent and sometimes it will and sometimes it won't.

To get the stupid internet to work, I have to shut down the PC, wait a few seconds, then reset the modem, wait a minute, and then reboot the PC and log back on..And then after all that the internet will stay from the range of 2 seconds to the rest of they day...

Which now brings up the question, wth is wrong with my internet? Do cable modems go bad?

Any help is great!

Most likely the cable company. Not a fan of them lately, I'm trying to figure out if it's cheaper to get satellite even though there's no satellite/internet combo like there is cable/internet.

My DSL modem did the same thing right before it died completely.

Looks as if you'll be buying a new modem in the not too distant future.

Yes they can go bad. The cable company can test it if you call them when you are experiencing this problem.

I had similar issues a year or so ago. Basically, my modem was old, outdated. They said I could schedule an appointment (in 3 days) or take in the defective modem and they'd give me a new one.

The office is about 5 minutes from my house. I was there 15 minutes after hanging up, getting my new modem.

If it's their product, they should give you a new one without charging you for it. (does not mean they will though, depends on who you speak with I guess)

Yeah but it's only Dish Network, and I don't think DSL is available in my area but I'm not 100% certain about that. Every time I check on the AT&T Website they say no.

If I get satellite, it's gonna be DirecTV.

Ammo, who's the current phone service through? If it's not AT&T, then that would be why you can get the DSL. And they, more than likely, will not be there anytime soon. I would guess that you're in an Alltel area and you would have to check with them on what they offer. If they don't offer DSL, you're S-O-L, unfortunately.

I had a similar problem. My modem was great at night and bad during the day. I called the cable company, the tech came out and did something with the modem (I wasn't here...). It works fine now...

I thought we had AT&T. Turns out we have Windstream.

Whatever the hell that is.

I think I need to look at these utilities and find the best possible deal because my parents are either too oblivious as telecommunications consumers (my mom) or doesn't wanna fool around with things (my dad).

I would get a new modem and see if there's a difference. If you get it at Best Buy, you can easily return it if it doesn't work.

Just check with your ISP to see if there are certain modems that work best with their service. I have a Motorola Surf Board and it's been great!

I see on their website that Windstream does offer broadband, digital tv et. Not sure if it's available for all their customers.

Something to check out though: Link

You save about 5 bucks a month having your own cable modem as well... not really worth it. If you're having the problem the cable company can test your router without even coming out to your house.

Yeah I already looked it up. Their bundle package sucks. 1.5 Mbps internet/normal phone service and Dish 100 for $99/month. Not only is the internet slower but there's less channels.

Ironically, after looking at the Digital Phone/Cable/Broadband all in one package, I'm suddenly not looking down on Time Warner as much anymore. vs. what we pay now, if we kept everything the same, by switching to digital phone we'd save $32/month vs. keeping regular phone service. We could upgrade to every single channel and STILL save $7.08/month by switching to digital phone. Knowing my dad, that won't happen (the premium channels that is...he'll love to save a bundle). Oh well, I'll be out of the house in 2-3 years anyway.

Anyone have digital phone and can comment on how it is?

Funny, I was going to ask about digital phones too. I've been pondering bundling it with my cable and internet.

I have digital phone and it's like any other phone. The only bad thing being is that if your power goes out so does your phone. I have the TWC bundle package for $105 a month. TWC doesn't have NFL network so that kinda sucks ass

1.5 MB DSL is actually not bad at all. I had a 6 MB cable connection and I notice VERY little difference. Now... 1.5 cable on the other hand...

Most likely the modem is going bad, but also check that it and/or your router are not near any electro-magnetic devices such as the power supply of your PC, too close to a CRT monitor, etc.

Magnetic interferences can have odd results on data equipment.

Every once in a while my modem slows to a crawl or craps out. I just reset it by unplugging it for 5 seconds then plugging it back in. Everything's back to normal. Try doing that without rebooting the computer.

I have been having the same problem with my connection. I have had Cox come out about 8 times in the past month. At first they told me it was my modem, so I bought a new one and it still did it. I have had this problem before, but it only took them coming out once to fix it.

It is still doing it now, and they can't figure out why. They can fix it for the time of day they come. If it is in the morning, it will work in the morning. If they come in the afternoon, it will work in the afternoon, etc. Since they came out on Saturday I have been having problems with my phone too. (I have phone and internet with them)

What sucks is they are the only high speed internet provider in my neighborhood, unless I go with satellite. After all the problems I have been having I might just have to go with satellite.

I'm not gonna tell you the problem is your modem, but the same thing was happening to me and when I switched modems, the problem went away. You are with a cable company, if they have an office near you or if they can get a repairman to you, they will give you a new modem in exchange for your current one,,, My guess is that will take care of your issue.

Same here.

I was trying to work from home and the server at work kept dropping the connection. Called the cable company and they tested it from their end, the modem was losing over half of the packets. I took it in to one of their offices and they gave me a new one, no charge. It's their modem, though, I did not purchase it.

With cable, speed is affected by how many others in your neighborhood are using the same cable access at the same time. During the day, my access is lightening fast. But when all the little porn surfers come home from school it slows down quickly.

Paying $5/mo for something that is so cheap is ridiculous. Why do you think they push you to use 'their' modem?

Thanks for all the help!

It sounds like it's the modem going bad, and glad I'm not the only one with bad modems or had problems with bad modems.

To some it is worth it. If your having issues and they claim the lines are fine and it must be the modem, then your on your own, they will not help you with modem issues, and for many that don't know computers, they could easily get the runaround.

Heck I work in IT, and they still try to give me the run around.

Provider: "The problem must be in your network."
Me: "No, I have tested everything in the network, I even took the modem out to the pole outside and it still doesn't get a signal."
Provider: "Ok, then I want you to reboot everything, and call us back if it still doesn't work."
Me: "FU, I've reboot, reset, reconfigured, tore apart, rebuilt, everything during my tests, I am calling you because the telephone pole with your lines on it exploded and is laying in shrapnel through my neighborhood"
Provider: "Ok, I will schedule to have a technician come out and look at your issue, but if it lies within your walls, there will be additional charges."
Me: "Quit reading your computer prompt responses, and listen to what I am saying. The world has blown up, we are all dead and just don't know it."
Response: "Is there anything else I can help you with today sir?"
Click.

lol...hit the nail on that one. I wish tech support was actually qualified to do tech support. Apparently all you need to do is be able to read a monitor and click yes or no to the customer's answer. I too am in IT and I use tech support as a last resort. I try every possible angle before going to them. Then when they ask me to do something I just act like I'm doing it or say "did it already" and tell them it didn't work. Finally I'll get to a higher level support and can actually have a converstation with someone and get things resolved in minutes by exchanging ideas.

FL - that was funny, but good point.

I absolutely hate calling Vonage when I have a problem. There's a 50/50 chance that you'll get an American. If you don't, I just hang up and try later. Their outsourcing reps just read off their screen and don't even understand what you are trying to ask about.

I have SBC/AT&T and I spoke to someone in repair, and they told me that they (SBC/AT&T) could replace the modem at a cost of $85 and it would take about a week for them to ship it to me. I decided to go to Office Max and bought a Zoom modem which I have had for about a year and a half now. Paid about $85 and didn't have to wait.

Lees, I believe if you have AT&T/SBC, you purchase the equipment at startup and are responsible for the equipment if a failure should occur throughout the life of your service.

I spoke with 3 different people at AT&T before I accepted that I had to purchase the modem.

I want to caution you about putting all of your eggs in one basket. I had Time Warner as my cable provider. Since April, they haven't been receiving my payments because I used my old account number from Adelphia. They recently cut off my service for non payment.

If I would have had my internet and phone through them, I would be SOL for communications.

Now I have to go to the bank and get copies of the electronic transfers and take them to the local TW office, and go through a bunch of crap that I shouldn't have to otherwise go through.

Moral of the story, don't put all of your eggs in one basket.

I agree with DPG here.

The $$ look good, but if there's an outage, will it affect everything?

I know I had Cable internet outages, that didn't affect my cable television, but the VOIP would be a different matter since it relies on your internet connection for usage.

Personally, I'm thinking I should turn off my home phone. It seldom rings. Everyone we know and WANT to talk to, calls us on our cell phones. But the wife is old fashioned and wants to keep it, at least for now.

That's exactly why I have Vonage. For 14.99/mo with every feature you could imagine, you can't beat that in terms of cost. When the internet is down, we just use our cell phones. We use our cell phones mainly anyways, so there's not much difference.

That's true - there were very clear notices saying that you needed to set up any online bill pay or whatever again.

ATT must die.

My internet was out all day at work. At least from 7am-4pm. A lot of people in Greater Cleveland got nailed.

I'm not saying they can't. However most people are too computer illiterate to set one up for one, and would get mad if they had to shell out more money for one a couple years later if it went bad... 5 bucks a month for someone who doesn't know jack and won't have to deal with "it's your fault" is probably worth it....

I guess if plug and play (b/c that's what modems are - just plug it in and go) is too much, then the $5/mo may be worth it if that means some nice guy comes out to install the modem for you. If you still end up installing it yourself, mind as well just buy one outright.

I did receive that notice in the beginning of April. It really would have been nice had they put the frigging new account number on the notice, don't you think???

So I wait for my statement to arrive, and my mail delivery here is not the greatest, I often get my neighbors mail and vice versa. I got my first statement from them with the new account number on it in May, so I was tardy with my payment, I did send it electronically with the new account number on it, and to the new address in Carol Stream Illinois, NOT Pittsburgh Pennsylvania like the Adelphia payment went to, and they STILL haven't received it. So now I have to go to the bank to see if the payment was processed on TW's end and then take that proof to TW. That is going to wait until next week, so to argue your defense of TW, I did not receive my new account number until May, and they have my payment, just haven't credited my account, and my checking account has been short that amount for some time now, and my cable was shut off last week.

Good thing I didn't have my internet with them or my phone service. I am now also glad that my cable service will not be supplied by them, so go ahead all you want, but somehow, I think I will have the last
