Schobert and Ogbah get the start. Schobert earned it. He and Nassib were the most impressive rookies. Kindred is also in a backup role but I expect to see both he and Nassib early and often.

Way to go Joe Schobert!!!

Yeah, Nate Orchard has done minimal to impress me. I approve of this.

I am a fan of Orchard but man Schobert shows a natural instinct for football that is ultra rare. He did some things in preseason that may not have shown up on the stat sheet but impressed the hell out of me. he shoots the gap doesnt go for the fake but changes direction, slips back and prevents the screen forcing the QB to go the opposite way. Few vets sniff out the playaction backside screen.

He disrupted plays he wasnt lost in coverage and he showed the ability to attack the pocket and finish plays. May just be a preseason warrior but I am very excited to see this kid play.

Ogbah we will see. I thought the plays he made were plays others forced into his lap. I want to see him be a difference maker.

I have a feeling we'll see all of the rookies early, often, and interchangeably all year

Man I hate Ray Horton's tweener evaluations.... Tyrone Holmes is a 6'2" 253# 3-4 defensive end? Not an OLB? What the heck. Same crap he pulled with Armonty as a rookie and that set him back in his develpoment on the outside.

*edit* I should say this was put together by the Browns PR staff and may not tell the whole story, like maybe Horton has only used him in 4 man line sub packages in practice so far, or maybe they just saw that he was listed as a DE when he was claimed. I dunno.

They don't list sub-packages separately, so I'm guessing they plan on using him as a 4-3 DE in nickel, but who knows. I think depth charts are antiquated anymore. They use so many different packages and personnel groupings. Pretty much just have to wait and see who gets what snaps where.

The PR and media play it very loose with position labels. Remember when they swore that Ogbah was moving "to DE"?

They should just classify OLB/DE as Edge rusher.

Congrats to Shobert. Dude is a baller. I think the D did a good job of finding and playing their best players.

No, I don't.

I thought they reported that he played there in practice one day. I do NOT remember then swearing that he MOVED to DE.

Quote:
Originally expected to play outside linebacker in the Browns’ 3-4 defense, Ogbah was switched to his natural position of defensive end in training camp after the loss of end Desmond Bryant to a torn pectoral muscle.

ESPN-Grossi

Quote:
2. Rock the Ogbah: Meanwhile, Emmanuel Ogbah, the Browns’ second-round pick who was a 4-3 end at Oklahoma State and projected as a 3-4 outside linebacker, continues to work mostly at 3-4 end. Ogbah said he is prepared to play both positions – end and outside linebacker – in Green Bay. “It’s definitely challenging,” Ogbah said. “But I actually like it because it makes me more flexible and I’ll be able to do whatever the coaches ask me to do.” Ogbah is one of a few defensive players getting looks at different positions – Pierre Desir (cornerback and safety) and Barkevious Mingo (outside linebacker and inside linebacker) are others. Where this all shakes out is anyone’s guess.

ClevelandBrowns.com

Quote:
LB Emmanuel Ogbah:
On the difficulty of transitioning from OLB to DE and back to OLB:
“I was actually still studying the plays. It won’t be that hard of a transition to go back to outside linebacker because I also played in a game at outside linebacker, too.”

247Sports

Quote:
"Coming on later in the game, rookie defensive lineman Emmanuel Ogbah put forth his best performance of the preseason in the second-to-last game. He recorded a hit, a hurry, a batted pass and also had another play where he beat Bucs tackle Donovan Smith badly but the ball was quickly gone before he could record a pressure. He also showed a few strong moments against the run, twice beating his man and stopping the play for no gain. Ogbah now ranks highly in both pass-rush productivity score and run-stop percentage among 3-4 DEs this preseason."

So he changed and then changed back when we got rid of Kruger.

J/c RE: Ogbah "move" to 34 DE

As a pass rusher, Browns rookie Emmanuel Ogbah naturally would play defensive end in a 4-3 defense and linebacker in a 3-4. In Cleveland, where the 3-4 remains the base defense, Ogbah spent the offseason as a linebacker. Now that camp has arrived, the Browns have given him a try at defensive end.

Before any of that can happen, though, Ogbah finds himself learning the finer points of a not-so-new position and what it takes to play it in the NFL. He must also master the nuances of playing end in a 3-4 defense compared to Oklahoma State's 4-3

Ogbah recently made the change from a 3-4 outside linebacker back to a defensive end. With defensive lineman Desmond Bryant’s injury and Armonty Bryant’s four-game suspension, Ogbah will likely see more playing time than expected in his new-but-not-really-new position.

Even back then at time of the reports of the move my was that Ogbah wouldn't play base 34 DE in the regular season.

Despite the reports Ogbah is doing/will do what he was drafted for and it's anything but 34 DE. He's a 34 OLB/43 DE edge rusher.

I'm looking forward to seeing if they can cut it as consistent starters at this level.

If all three, plus Coleman, pan out as legitimate NFL starters (not just starting here because we have nothing better to trot out there), then this Front Office will be nothing short of miracle workers by getting four REAL starters in one draft.

Browns is the Browns

Lol if any of those picks work out, than they're already light-years above what we're use to with our drafted players. Cold, sad and gloomy truth.

As Nassib grows as a player, and grows strength wise, I believe he is going to be a stud.

Cleveland Browns @ Philadelphia Eagles

7. Browns rookie OLB Joe Schobert recorded seven run stops this preseason, tied for the most among 3-4 OLBs.

The Browns have seen somewhat of a youth movement this offseason, which includes players like fourth-round rookie Joe Schobert earning the starting job. In Week 1, the Browns are facing off against the Eagles with Carson Wentz. While Cleveland has a lot of new parts on defense, if the team is able to stop the run with players like Schobert, that will force Philadelphia to win with Wentz, who only saw an unimpressive 38 snaps in the preseason.

8. The Eagles earned the highest team pass-rush grade of the preseason.

While this was in part due to strong play from backups, it was also due to players like Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, and Vinny Curry, who should all typically be on the field in pass-rushing situations. The Eagles’ return to a 4-3 defense is supposed to help the pass-rush, and they might be able to get the best of the Browns on Sunday in this regard. While Cleveland LT Joe Thomas is still an excellent player, the Browns lost their starting center and right tackle in free agency, and the guards had down years in 2015. With a rookie quarterback, the Eagles need their defense to dominate the game, and this pass-rush just might be able to.

I hate being a 3-4 team.

If you have a great 3-4 defense, then that's great, but I feel like either you have a great 3-4 defense, or you have a terrible defense, maybe that's just us...

When I picture a "defense" I picture a 4-3, two solid DTs, two athletic DEs, and a big thumper MLB..

That's what I want.

Without a stout nose tackle, the 3-4 sucks.

I almost kinda miss dick jaurons 4-3. Not flashy but prime example of bend but don't break.

I wasn't very impressed w/Schobert when I watched him the first two games. I thought he looked slow in space. I'll be watching closely on Sunday.

We are a 3-4 by name only. The way we think about defenses has to change, teams are in sub packages 65% of the time.

Agreed. Which might actually serve to benefit a player like Shelton.

I loved NYGs 2007 Defense.

Strahan and Osi on the outside, Pierce in the middle..

Then, with the coaching staff ingrained, and the defensive style set, they were able to basically just bring guys along as replacements. Your Justin Tucks and your JPPs.

I liked your comment even though I like a 3-4. The problem is Marshmellow Shelton. The kid is a Sissy. No more warpaint for that punk..eyeshadow and lipstick is the way to go for that "guy".

I do my friend....he just isn't as tough as the players he faces. If he was, he would beat them every now and then. If he was tougher, he would beat them often.

Hmm ... I actually thought that Shelton was really pretty bad right off the bat last year, but improved quite a bit in the 2nd half of the season.

Now, like all of our players who remain on the team from last year, he has a completely new defensive scheme to learn and figure out.

This really is the problem the Browns have .... they get a guy in the draft .... he shows promise in the 2nd half of his rookie season ...... the coach is fired .... start over. wash, rinse, repeat.

KI am curious as to how Shelton, and our other players, do with picking up Horton's defense .... which is just a complicated for the players as O'Neill's was .... just in a different way.

As for Schobert, I didn't really pay attention to him until the last game. He had a decent amount of reps I think. and from what I saw he looked good. Seemed to be solid against the run and pass rush. Between Ogbah, Nassib, and Schobert I saw two sacks. and a couple of good preasures on the Qb. Did he have as many reps the first three games?

Damn I think I need to go back and watch the game on youtube, had a couple of beers so that's what I remember.

I thought both he and Erving last year were the softest linemen I'd ever seen (for being first round picks). It was incredible.
