It just had to be clowns, didn't it? We couldn't indulge in some good old-fashioned nationwide panic about, say, zombies or sexy teenage vampires. Nope, it had to be clowns and it had to be mere weeks before Halloween.

Unless you've been hiding under a rainbow novelty wig, you know communities around the country have been perturbed by sightings of clowns or possible clown-related threats or any manner of creepiness ranging from flat-out hoaxes to actual credible events.
People have been arrested. Schools have sent out warning letters. Social media is crawling with creepy, homemade clown videos. And it came up at the White House media briefing this week.
It's so weird, even Stephen King wants people to chill.

I had an ex... she claimed to be scared of clowns and I, rudely, took it as well fat ole joke. Nagged and etc her and got her to watch Steven King's IT.

She was absolutely terrified. Pure horror. To the point I literally turned the movie off and just tried to get her to focus on anything else but that move.

The scare is real to some people. Like you, I don't get it. She had claimed to have never watched a clown movie, just saw them in real life. That girl was like, 27 years old too. Grown women.

I think this whole creepy clown thing has come about because of the failure of the zombie craze. Zombies didn't scare anyone because they
look like the drug addicts we step over on our way about town each day.

Clowns on the other hand, get our attention!

Zombies are played out.

And everyone who talks or prepares for the zombie apocalypse assumes they've got the chops and won't become one.

I read something yesterday that warning shots were fired. Only a matter time before it happens.

we had a clown scare at our school yesterday ... kids trying to scare middle schoolers. I'm sure Halloween costumes will revolve around it too

I'm trying to figure out the whole "creepy clown" phenomena.

Obviously people who want to do serious harm do not what to stand-out.

Is it like a new generation, naivete, mass hysteria?

Do most people consider it a joke? Or a funny hoax (like War of the Worlds was on October 30, 1938?

War of the Worlds was a famous series of radio broadcasts claiming that aliens had landed and were killing people with their crafts and death rays.

My best guess is that it's a combination of these things. Instead of radio, it's social media.

I remember myself at 19. This is just the kind of st00pd thing I and my friends would have tried to pull off back then, if we'd thought about it.

And... at this point, I'd like to add a thought: I was born at the right time in history. Because if we had mobile technology when I was in my 20's, my public reputation would still be trashed.

But what about these clowns that are trying to lure kids into the woods, or grabbing babies from their mothers arms? Its been all over the News.

Those stupid things we did were pretty harmless to others but this clown stuff has a real bad side to it.

Somebody's going to end up shooting a clown.

This has to be younger guys doing this. 1st we see them wearing pants 12 sizes to big and either trying to hold them up while running from cops, or trying to run with the pants wrapped around their ankles. Now they want to start wearing shoes 12 sizes to big as well.

Personally, I blame this on the 2nd Amendment crowd. They have no problem getting together at Starbucks for a latte with their AR-15's and AK-47's and pisspoor weapons handling, scaring the poop out of hipsters... but a clown grabbing babies and wielding machetes? Not a Bundy to be seen.
