The D-line has definitely been upgraded with Robaire Smith at DE and S Smith at NT.

I don't know about this. Robaire Smith is an average end at best. And as for Shaun Smith--an undrafted free agent that spent many years just trying to find a team to get some play time. I wouldn't call him an upgrade just yet. He wasn't even a starter in Cincy, and we're calling him an upgrade?!

For the last year or two Robaire has been playing in the wrong scheme. He's succesful in the 3-4 and mediocre on the 4-3. Compared to the the guys starting at DE for us last year he'll be a solid upgrade.

NT Smith is still a back up here. And compared to who was backing up TW last year he's way better. An athletic 325 NT is hard to find and even if he spends the entire year behind TW he'll get more playing time to help Ted rest and stay fresh. Even if it's an upgrade at depth - it's an upgrade.

I disagree here, sort of. Robaire Smith is spotty, in whatever scheme he plays in. He played one very good season (2004 I believe, in Tennessee), but physically he was breaking down by year's end in first year in Houston. He just wasn't in good shape. Smith is probably better in a 4-3, and with a lot of rotation.

I dunno Vers,

We won four games last year, charlie frye single handedly lost 2.

Which 2 were those? I can't wait to hear this one.

He single handedly won one of those four games too... against the Raiders.. lol.. that game had me pumped.. especially against a defense that is actually pretty solid.

AMMO...

what's so frustrating as a fan is knowing that individually, each of those ? units gives (some of) us reason to be optimistic for improvement...some units less so than others (hoping for great or even efficient QB play is kind of a longshot amongst those groups), but we can see potential...the problem is that stacking all of those maybe's on top of one another brings another dicey season to the lakeshore...

my only prediction, as it seems to be roughly true each year, is that the side of the ball with the high expectations will 'underperform' and the one with low expectations will 'overperform'...of course, expectations is the key word...this year, the passionate, if somewhat delusional, fan seems to be really high on our O, given this young OC and his new motion scheme...add in our OL and RB upgrades, and you'd get the impression from some that we were gonna score with the Colts and Bengals...on the other side, there's some homer optimism, but not nearly as much...this season, the D will pleasantly surprise those folks, but i'm not sure it will overcome the disappointment in our O, which will still struggle for at least the first 1/2 of the year...

that's alright...keep calling me names...maybe i'll draw your criticism off of those less deserving...

i enjoy your factual, 'x and o' threads, but that knowledge doesn't give you currency to belittle others' opinions in every other facet of football discussion...at least, not for me...

LOL........keep calling you names? I could have sworn you were the one who started w/the "thank the lord......" comments. I did not speak to you until AFTER you belittled me. And now, you conveniently turn it around and cry that I attacked you.

I asked you before to not respond to me. It's better for the board that way. Let's get this straight. I could go forever w/out saying one freaking word to you. But, if you belittle me, I'm going to fire back on you. And since you can't seem to talk to me unless you are mocking me or putting me down.......I once again ask that you just don't respond to me. The board doesn't benefit by us bickering.

^^ see that name?...that means i'm talking to you...did you see that in my first post?...i was talking about your attitude, but i know you're not gonna change, and that's fine...i was talking to others, b/c i know that there are other folks that, while appreciative of the knowledge you bring, could do without the condescension...isn't the ignore button there to not view certain posters...feel free to use it...

i will continue to view your posts and comment as i see fit...sorry that doesn't jibe with your grand scheme for this message board...but again, the ignore option is there for you...

have a great day!

This is a good sign for Wright and the Browns... The young man can play...

We do need to hold outright op until they start layin the wood... Once the armor goes on then we'll see what we have...

The Browns got much better this off season... They must stay heathy to have a chance to attain 6-10 to 8-8... Which will be very tough to do. When you look at the sched it's real tough to realistically see the Browns winning more than a handful of game again this season... IMO. Yeah, it's possible but not to probable... The Browns should and probably will be in the cellar in our division again this season. We must go 6-10 & split or win at least two division games or RAC will be gone... The rats should be the class of the division again this year and be in the hunt for the AFC title... The stoolers have very viable playoff chances and the bungs do to if they can stay healthy and stay out of jail/trouble...

I still think one of the other CB's prospects will have to step up along with Wright for our secondary to improve... If Baxter can recover I see him at safety along side Jones... Bodden still worries me and I have a feeling he is not going to hold up...

Bodden worries me also..you are correct one of the other CB's need to step up this year..I fear more injuries may occur.
Baxter is not a player I expect to play this year... so I'm not looking in that direction , but you have hit on something I didn't think about.
Playing FS may be the best spot for him now..I doubt if he'll be able to cut/turn/piviot and run like he used to playing corner..but playing centerfield will not put as much stress on his knees as before.

I hope Baxter is healthy for his sake....but I hope he doesn't play for us ever again....he's never been impressive to me whatsoever.

He can't be moved because of the injuries..
If he can play, he will for us ,otherwise he'll be cut , but only after his abilities are evaluated...
No he's not one of the better corners but playing as a reserve it might not hurt.

At the worst, he should raise the bottom of the roster at his position... which, by Savages hints, might well be as a Safety.

He also mentioned nickel back. He could probably play there if we are playing straight zone coverage.

I thought that getting the guy in the first place was a dumb move by Savage. I never thought he was a very good corner. He has terrible hips which prevents him from turning and running. Him trying to defend a double move? LOL.....forget it.

I am rooting for the guy because he is working so hard and it is so important to him. It would be great for him if he made it back to the field. I respect guys that work that hard and that care so much.

This is the part I'm struggling with.....I know he wasn't good before and he can't possibly be near that "good" after this injury, but I'll be damned if it wouldn't be great to see him make a comeback and be able to play again.
