The NHL season opens tonight.

Toronto at Ottawa 7:00 PM TSN
St. Louis at Chicago 8:00 PM NBCSN
Calgary at Edmonton 10:00 PM TSN
Los Angeles at San Jose 10:30 PM NBCSN

We are entering that time of year when all four major US sports are happenin’.

Personally, I’m a Monsters fan. As in the Cleveland Monsters (or Lake Erie Monsters if you prefer - nice Halloween ring to it).

The 2016 AHL Calder Cup Champions.

The Monsters start the defense of their Title this Friday at 7 pm at the Quickens Loans Arena.

Opening Night/Banner Raising
GIVEAWAY –

1) First 10,000 fans receive a replica championship banner
2) Pregame Party open to all fans starting at 5pm
3) 1-2-3 Fridays - $1 Pepsi products, $2 Sugardale hot dogs, and $3 beers (select 12-14 oz)
4) Calder Cup championship banner raising pregame

I would be so there this Friday (if I couldn’t get Indians tickets).

And if I wasn’t 500 miles away.

Did anybody see them play last (this) year?

The Calder Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the champions of the American Hockey League. It is the second oldest actively awarded professional ice hockey playoff trophy after the NHL's Stanley Cup.

The Calder Cup was first presented in 1937 to the Syracuse Stars.
The trophy is named after Frank Calder, who was the first president of the National Hockey League.

The Calder Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually to the Rookie of the Year in the National Hockey League, was also named after Calder.

The Hershey Bears have won the Cup more times than any other team, with eleven victories in franchise history. The Cleveland Barons come in second with nine; the Springfield Indians/Kings are third with seven. Eight teams have won back-to-back championships; the Springfield Indians of 1960-62 is the only team to have won three straight Calder Cup championships.

While I‘ve never seen the Monsters, I have seen Cleveland Barons’ games. And Springfield Indians (when I lived in Springfield, Mass.)

Go Jackets! Here's to an injury free season. They should make the playoffs.

Punch, what's the word on Sam Gagne? I remember at one point he was considered above-average. How is he now?

Yeah, I hope the Jackets can get into the playoffs this season.

Are you asking about Simon Gagne or Sam Garner? smirk Neither of which is on the Hawks.

The Jackets signed him. I know your hockey knowledge is a bit better than mine. I haven't paid as much attention the last couple of seasons due to abysmal injuries for the Jackets, and the logistics of watching games up here in Alaska.

I haven't followed the NHL regular season much since Peter Karmanos moved the Whalers to North Carolina in 1997. (The Hartford Whalers)

I think the Whalers were the only Major League sports team in Connecticut history.

Broke a lot of fans' hearts here.

Got my tickets for the Calder Cup Ceremony game Friday night.

Not sue how we will be this season, lost 4 key players to the Jackets for the time being, including Bjorkstrand

No. 1 overall pick Auston Matthews already has two goals for the Leafs against Ottawa. Kid will soon be an NHL force.

I see Crosby got yet another concussion in practice this week. He should probably quit while he's ahead.

Wings open Thursday. I've finally accepted that the glory days are over lol, but they have a young exciting team. They should keep the playoff streak alive at 26. I'm still not sold on Blashill as coach, but let's see what a year under his belt has done.

I wasn't aware of that. He has such a horrible history with concussions. Much as I like watching him play, I agree that he needs to quit before he does more damage to himself.

Well he's on pace to score 328 goals this season! Joking aside, that's just frickin' incredible. Maybe he can help bring home the gold for Team USA.

In true Leafs form, they ended up losing the game too. In so many ways, the Leafs are the Browns of the NHL.

If I hadn't adopted the Hawks back in 2000, I probably should have become a Leafs fan.

Yeah, I saw they signed him, but I don't know how good he is. I checked their depth chart last night and I didn't see him listed.

I've been rooting for Columbus to get over that 8-9 seed trap for a while now. They're not my team but I think it would be good to see them turn the corner and bring some major excitement to Ohio. Speaking of, I think they should have been named the Ohio Jackets, not Columbus.

I miss Saad by the way.

Man, the NHL is in such good shape right now with the plethora of good, young, exciting players.

The North American U23 team they put together for the world cup was some of the best hockey I have watched in a long time. Even the other national teams were in awe of the speed and skill of that group. That is so awesome for the NHL.

Great time to be a hockey fan!
