Question,,do Clevelanders really talk that distinctive? You wouldn't think that people in Columbus would talk too much different than someone from Cleveland, but 3 girls told me they knew I wasn't from there b/c of how I talked. It's what 120 miles between the 2 cities? When I lived in a dorm a few people from PA said the same thing to me, but there from PA so I was like "whatever". But Columbus is OH and not far away.  I wouldn't have thought too much about it if 3 different people didn't bring it up to me. I know people from Cincy kinda sound a little weird but I chalk that up to them being Kentucky "wanna-be's"

Well, I know a certain someone for Soutern Ohio likes my Northern Ohio accent.

No, it is THEM that talk with an accent. Its like I have said for years, Columbus and south is Kentucky.

The funny thing is my Cleveland accent has gotten heavier since going to OU...hearing the Cincitucky accent really pissed me off to the point where I just said "screw them" and made my accent as heavy as I could. I guess it really comes out when I'm drunk.

Trust me, people in Cincinnati have a very distinct accent. The Cleveland accent is a much more Northern accent than Southern. I hear a lot of Michigan accent in Clevelanders.

people have told me that my accent is something in between Boston and NY. The Michigan people have a Northern Ohio accent, not us having a (blah) Michigan accent

Heck, I moved from Brookpark down to Sebring (near Alliance) and it seems like quite a few have (maybe not a different accent) created their own language. BTW...That's not making fun of anyone, I've just heard some words/interpretations down here that I've never heard in my life.

The Cleveland accent is on "o"s and on other words. Say the word cop. Does it sound like cop or like cahp? - almost like Boston. Another thing people from Cleveland do (myself included.) Say: hawk and Hocking. Do they sound the same? For most people they do - but with a Cleveland accent they sound different. Some people also do things with the words mat and things that sound like it. Some Clevelanders put a "y" sounds into it: mat because myat. I'm sure there's more I missed, but that's a few out the things we do. And I love our accent!

I wasn't even aware there was a Cleveland accent. I live in Columbus, so I haven't really noticed any accents. Anyone got an audio clip?

The "mat because myat" is exactly to me what the Cleveland accent sounds like. I was born in Painesville as were my mom and dad. At age 12 my parents moved us down here to Raleigh, NC. My parents still have their "accent" and I have a very neutral accent. When I go back to visit family I tend to redevelop the Cleveland accent.

I was told by a girl at school down here in orlando that I have an accent too. I think that's a first for me. I think SHE was the one with an accent.

I was born in Cleveland, and when I graduated from high school, I went to college in Atlanta, GA...I was told by them that I had a country accent....?!?!?1

Actually no we don't. Pittsburgh does, I've even heard it when I've gone to Baltimore or D.C. but as far as I can tell, living in Columbus, no one here says I or anyone else that's moved here from Cleveland have anything resembling an accent.

One of my housemates is from Pittsburgh, and I can't stand his accent. It's only one words like "home" and "phone". He says them like hoooooooome and phooooooone. I thought it was just something he did until I was at Geauga Lake last year and a woman asked me if she could leave her phoooooooone on the side.

We definitely have an accent. I didn't really notice until I started dating my Floridian fiancee. She told me that I have a Cleveland accent, but still refuses to admit she has a Floridian one. Our accent is basically a more mild version of what you hear in Chicago and Wisconsin. A lot of Clevelanders say things like John and Mark and Camera with weird accents. ALSO!!!!! Did you know that Tree Lawn, Birm, and Loge (the suites at ball parks) are all Cleveland words. Seriously, people in Cincy, Columbus, and Toledo had no idea what I was talking about.

This is the Cleveland accent to a T. I have family in Strongsville, Madison, and Ashtabula so I've been hearing it all my life. I really consider it a Northeast Ohio accent, not just Cleveland.
My cousin, Patrick, gets picked on at family reunions. Everyone calls him Pee-atrick. Really stressing that slight "E" before the "A". He could care less.
Your accent is nothing to deny or be offended by. I was raised by 2 Ashtabulans and have lived in Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia, Athens, OH, & now Columbus, OH. My accent is all jacked up and I could care less what anyone says.

The weird thing about the cleveland accent, is that by the time you reach Akron, it's gone. I'd agree with it being close to wisconsin/minnesota. "Boat" turns into "Bot" with a long "O.""E" gets attached to any word with an "A" as the second letter so you say something like "Byack" instead of "Back."
It seems like everywhere i go there are two types of speaking. The colloquial way and then the neutral way. The colloquial changes with the territory, but you can always find a group of people who speak neutrally. Its not a bad thing, its just a thing.

Exactly...I am a flight attendant and I was working a flight one day and I had asked an elderly gentleman what he wanted to drink. The gentleman said, "You are from Ohio". I said, "Yeah, I was born and raised in Akron(live in CO now). How did you know?" He said he was a squadron leader in the Army and a bunch of his troops were from Ohio. He said they all had a distinct accent. I said that I thought I had no accent since I was from Ohio. He said that Ohioans have a very distinct accent.
