The elite snowflakes of Oberlin College have been indoctrinated so well.

News Paper Article

OBERLIN — A crowd of protesters overtook the sidewalks of West College Street on Thursday after what many of them believed to be a racially fueled incident at Gibson’s Bakery the night before.

Police estimated about 300 people, many of whom were Oberlin College students, were in front of the store and across the street claiming Allyn Gibson assaulted 19-year-old Jonathan Aladin shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday when he was trying to buy items at the store.

One of the organizers of the event, who declined to be named, said the event was part of a history of “racial profiling and discrimination.”

“There is a need for justice to be served to hold Gibson’s accountable for these patterns of injustices and unlawful behavior that have been allowed to continue and go unchecked,” said another organizer, who also declined to be named. “We will not allow for this to continue any longer.”

Many protesters declined to have their picture taken or speak with Chronicle-Telegram staff, but one man who didn’t want to be named claimed that Gibson, who is white, attacked Aladin, whom several protesters had erroneously identified as a 17-year-old.

A report from the Oberlin Police Department said Sgt. Victor Ortiz and Officer Raymond Feuerstein were called to West College Street on Wednesday night because Gibson, Aladin and two females –— Endia Lawrence and Cecelia Whettstone — were engaged in a fight across the street from the store.

After the fight was broken up, the report said Gibson told Officer Marc Ellis that Aladin attempted to buy one bottle of wine from the store while concealing two under his shirt.

“Allyn stated he advised Aladin that he knew he had the concealed items and told Aladin not to leave because he was contacting the police,” the report said. “Allyn stated Aladin attempted to leave the store so Allyn took out his phone and attempted to take a picture of Aladin and that’s when Aladin slapped Allyn’s hand and phone and caused it to strike Allyn in the face. Allyn stated Aladin began to run to the back of the store throwing the two bottles of wine on the floor.”

The report said Aladin began to hit Gibson before leaving the store to run across the street and meet Lawrence and Whettstone, at which point Gibson also crossed the street to attempt to detain Aladin again.

Gibson said he was knocked to the ground and punched repeatedly by all three individuals with Aladain saying at least once “I’m going to kill you.”

The report said Gibson’s father, David, as well as cashier Brent Gingery gave a similar series of events. Ortiz and Feuerstein both said they witnessed Gibson on his back with Aladin, Lawrence and Whettstone punching and kicking him.

Police Lt. Mike McCloskey said because of Aladin’s use of force against Gibson, the charges were upgraded from shoplifting to robbery. He was arrested at the scene Wednesday and released Thursday.

Lawrence and Whettstone both were charged with assault.

Protesters said they felt Gibson racially profiled Aladin and found it unfair the 19-year-old was arrested instead of Gibson, chanting that people should boycott the establishment.

Jim Lawland Jr. said he saw live feeds of the protest on Facebook and felt compelled to come to Gibson’s and purchase his lunch.

“I’ve been going to Gibson’s for 10 years, and I know for a fact that Allyn isn’t a racist,” the Wellington resident said. “It doesn’t make sense, and these protesters must not know all of the facts because what happened isn’t worth protesting over.”

Off-duty North Ridgeville police Officer Adam Freas, an Oberlin resident, also stopped in to shop at Gibson’s on Thursday evening. Freas said protesters didn’t attempt to block him as he entered the store and they did not say anything disrespectful or derogatory toward him.

“I just wanted to come down here to support Mr. Gibson and his business,” Freas said.

The incident was the third instance reported to police this week in which someone allegedly attempted to shoplift from Gibson’s. Melissa Harris, 20, was arrested and charged on Sunday, and Davis Sawyer, 22, was arrested and charged on Monday.

Both Harris and Sawyer are white and students at Oberlin College as are Aladin, Lawrence and Whettstone.

Several signs at the protest used expletives and called Gibson a racist, but store cashier Trey James said that’s far from the truth.

“The guy got caught stealing and got arrested for it. They think it’s racial profiling, and it’s not,” James, who is black, said. “It was a pretty clear-cut case. If you shoplift, you get prosecuted, regardless of your orientation, race, background, political viewpoint or anything else.”

Donelle Thompson, 38, of Elyria, stopped to counter-protest Thursday evening.

“This is not a race issue, this is a matter of crime, plain and simple,” she said. “There are too many entitled kids.”

America today is getting a real education in Truth.
We are seeing the outing of the Liberal/Progressives for who they really are. What they really stand for and how undemocratic they truly are.
They tried to lead America down the path of socialism and they love to hate in the name of love. Their movement of inclusiveness is not willing to accept American Democracy and the will of the people as they violently riot over the election. Inclusiveness is only applied to people of their own faith.

Very interesting times, very informative.
They are all the things they have accused the rest of us of being.

Hmm...

I think the student protests from a place like this could be expected.

It sounds like Oberlin College is way out there. But it's good to have academic institutions like Oberlin.

I mean way, way, out there.

It's OK:

1) These kids are way-off the liberal/conservative scale (obviously the liberal end)
2) They're looking for something to protest. Anything.

It's OK. It's the store owners fault. He should have been "nicier" to the shoplifter. He knows where his shop is.

Oberlin is La La land. Wacky places/institutions like this help make America great.

The store owner would be wise to apologize and hold some sort of act of contrition. Maybe drop $1,000 worth of freebies. He'd become the darling of Oberlin County.

The kids would love him. He'd probably make his money back 10-fold.

Yeah, I'd say even beyond that.

I suspect Oberlin is a very elite college for the wealthy with many talented kids thrown in. Especially in music.

But Oberlin was the first college in America to admit blacks (30 years BEFORE the civil war) and the first to grant Bachelor degrees to women.

That's pretty impressive. At the vanguard of societal change.

It's good to have a little voice out from deep left field.

The kid shoplifter? I'd say just a sign of immaturity more than anything.

My shoplifting a candy bar days were over by 9th grade. (when I finally got caught)("Oh, I don't get the candy bar and keep my quarter, too?")

I was born and lived in Oberlin for 10 years. Gibson's brings back many good memories. I still get the city paper in the mail each week. The number of shoplifting incidents at that store which make the crime column is shocking. Sad stuff.

Not really, but it is a very liberal, liberal arts school. Very artsy little school.

I dont know if it is true, but i heard the owner is black. Either way this crap is ridiculous, they guy was caught shoplifting. Crap like this is exactly why Trump was elected. People are tired of this garbage. I am all for civill rights, equal treatment , and freedoms for all, but dumb stuff like this takes credibility away from legitimate issues.

I guess I'm outa touch on college costs.

The Oberlin College site has ~ $66,000/year as it's tuition + room/board.

Wait, that's $66,000 * 4 = $264,000? Ouch. For a 22 year-old.

Anyway.

I'm tellin' ya.

It's la la land.

Just look at Gibsons at Oberlin:

They're just asking for it.

Hey, at least they're not breaking the windows and looting the place.

Hold on. I gotta catch my breath. I crack me up. I'm so proud of myself.

Let's see. Yeah, it sounds like Oberlin, OH is a very cool place to go to college. (It's site lists 55% female students)(I would have liked that 45%/55% split - I might have been able to get a date)

This is really a none issue. Not really a race issue - except that's what the kiddies made it out to be in their little microcosm.

By the way, welcome aboard AZ.

Please keep your hands in the ride at all times. Remain seated. Make sure your lap bar and shoulder harness are securely in place. Wait until the ride has come to a complete stop before exiting. And have a nice day.

I didnt realize Oberlin was that expensive.

I wonder if they are very generous with their grants and scholarships, because I know a few kids from my inner city HS that went to Oberlin

I visited Oberlin with my son for their music program some five/six years ago. You could tell, while a nice campus and beautiful neighborhood, that he wouldn't have fit in with either the students or the staff. There was a tinge of smugness that turned us off and I'm glad he ended up with his full ride at YSU. He would have invested far too much money and wouldn't be student teaching right now with no debt.

How was the music program at YSU? My son is a SR and is exploring music programs for college. Right now I think he is eyeing Akron(spit) but I think that is more because his friend is going there. I know originally he was talking about OU.

I'd like to suggest BGSU for consideration- especially if he wants to focus on MusEd.

Great facility, excellent teachers, thorough training, and a job placement rate (in education) somewhere in the high-80's/low-90's.

BG grads get placed.

YSU has a solid program. Clem is right. You need to consider BGSU. If my son didn't go to YSU he would have went there.

The thing with music is he should combine it with teaching or another degree. Don't want to go four years just to play an instrument only. My boy did some jazz on the side and took up choir and sang with the Salem Youth Choir.

He's now student teaching and ABSOLUTELY loves the kids and the school. He graduates next month!!

Thanks Rocky, we hit the jackpot with the full ride. He's matured into a good young man along the way.

Thanks Clem, I had actually thought about sending you a PM and asking a few questions about school choices. We will look into BGSU for sure. I am pretty familiar with campus out there, I almost took a GA position out there a few years back

You can talk to me anytime, Dawg- about anything you want.

BGSU changed my life for the better. They gave me my first chance at a future... and also gave me a second chance, after I'd 'effed up' the first one- almost 10 years later.

It's a really, really good program.
They're big enough to have serious clout (especially in the MusEd game), when it comes to placing grads in jobs/continuing education... and they're just small enough to give your kid all the specialized one-on-one care, that (s)he could want.

If you want to dig deeper, PM me. I've been off-campus for more than 30 years, but My Professional Crew has a standing relationship with this school. We collaborate on a ton of projects every year... and I know a bunch of the (new) faculty from our professional tie-ins.

Oberlin update:

News article

OBERLIN — They came on foot and on motorcycles, in cars and trucks and from all corners of the state to Gibson’s Bakery for doughnuts, coffee and, in their words, justice.

Gibsons’s Bakery has been the focus of attention in Lorain County for the latter part of last week after students from Oberlin College boycotted the store and claimed racial profiling had a play in the Wednesday arrest of a 19-year-old accused of shoplifting. Protesters were not seen in front of the store Saturday.

In reaction, a community of support formed around Gibson’s and Saturday they formed a so-called “cash mob” to descend upon the store.

Trey James, one of about half a dozen employees running around Gibson’s Bakery taking orders from a seemingly never-ending line of hungry customers, yelled out words of thanks for the support in between taking pastry orders.

“We sincerely appreciate the outpouring of support from the community,” James said, before turning his attention back to the line.

The protesters, mainly students from Oberlin College, alleged that racial profiling was to blame for the arrest of Jonathan Aladin, who was charged with robbery after he was accused of concealing two bottles of wine under his shirt.

According to a police report, Allyn Gibson, whose family owns Gibson’s Bakery, was attempting to detain Aladin while Gibson’s father, David Gibson, called the police. The report said Aladin ran outside the store and Allyn Gibson chased him and tried to grab him again.

When police arrived, they found Allyn Gibson on the ground with Aladin and two women, Endia Lawrence and Cecelia Whettstone, kicking and punching him. The women were charged with assault and released on $1,000 bail. Aladin was charged with robbery and taken to Lorain County Jail, where he was held until his arraignment Friday. He’s been ordered not to enter Gibson’s and is set to appear in Oberlin Municipal Court on Dec. 14 for a preliminary hearing.

“We think they were unjustly accused of doing a wrongdoing and we traveled about 50 miles to get here,” said David Vincent, as he took a photo of his wife and son standing in front of the store. They had come from North Royalton to support the store and were drinking glass bottles of orange soda purchased inside.

Robert Morris, who said he owns several of the downtown buildings, hoped for a peaceful resolution for both sides.

“We love the college students,” Morris said. “That’s one of the things that’s great about Oberlin. It’s a very diverse community and I’m glad they can protest, but other people have their opinion and hopefully everyone’s got a chance to demonstrate and present their side of it.”

The most noticeable group of supporters were the members of motorcycle clubs in attendance. Their motorcycles filled the parking spots in front of the store as they sat, clad in leather, at tables outside the bakery.

“We came for the doughnuts,” said Lenny Lash, president of the Iron Coffins Ohio Chapter. He offered no further explanation when asked.

Though many were glad to see the support, not everyone was happy about their presence.

Diane Sherwood, a resident of Oberlin, walked through the group asking the motorcycle club members to leave.

“This is not about them and they’re scaring people,” Sherwood said.

Many of the supporters were asking where the protesters were, one could be heard threatening violence if they showed up.

“These guys are not part of what we’re doing. They’ve come to see what’s exciting here,” Sherwood said of the motorcycle clubs. “There are students who have been mistreated for a long time by the store and they are the ones that are demonstrating.”

Ann Francis, another Oberlin resident, was walking through the crowd after holding a peace vigil, a weekly occurrence in Tappan Square.

“I’m not really involved in this although I hope that there will be some peaceful resolution of this and that we have some clarity of what’s happened here,” Francis said.

Oberlin College President Marvin Krislov and vice president and dean of students Meredith Raimondo, issued a statement Friday saying they’ve heard conflicting stories from students than what’s in the police report and believe there is “more to the story than what has been generally reported.”

Jim Lawhead Jr. called the students “social justice warriors … who have no clue about the facts.”

He had a different explanation about why there were no protesters.

“They’ve been down here raising hell for three days and then they find out there’s a cash mob and there’s no one here,” Lawhead said, gesticulating with a chocolate ice cream cone he purchased at Gibson’s. “You stand up to these clowns and they’ll walk away because they have no argument. It’s as simple as that.”
