I like Hue. I want to get that out of the way. I think he is a good coach.
But I completely disagree with how he's handled the QB position the past few weeks.
I get that he was looking for a spark but obviously it didnt work and was the wrong decision.
It seems disingenuous to complain about a QB missing plays then turn around and play McCown.
Cody has been playing better then McCown and when you factor in his youth and experience Cody deserves more lattitude fto make mistakes.

At 0-10 which way should they view it? it, honestly, doesn't matter to me how they view it, at all... but, I'm sure there will be those that say that every single game should be all about doing anything and everything for a Win, even at this point. I'm perfectly Ok with that, and I'm perfectly Ok with everything being about evaluating and coaching up the players... it no longer matters in any way.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Cody is playing the way he's playing, both good and bad, because Cody is not ready. He's not suppose to be. He is a 3rd round pick who was suppose to sit and learn and grow into the job be it a starter or a capable back-up. I feel bad for him being thrown in especially behind this line and with the other injuries.

Does Hue give Horton one more year and one more draft/FA? Or, does he fire him this year? If he fires him it is yet, another system.
Can Hue do what Pettine couldn't and fire his buddy?

The talent level is a factor. I like Cody the way I liked Colt McCoy but let's face it, he's not the 2nd coming of Brady or Rogers.

If he fires his 4th head coach in 4+ years of owning the team, I think that I will, at the very least, take a vacation from the team.
I just don't think that I will be able to find the strength to care.

YTown, I think you and I both understand that we shouldn't even have to discuss whether Hue will be fired or not. We knew the team would stink this year and no coach could win many games w/this talent.
With that said, the fact that there is already some discussion about keeping/firing Hue is an indicator of one of the flaws w/the plan that Haslam and FO put in place. Constant losing takes its toll on the fan-base, the players, coaches, FO personnel, ownership, etc and the media will begin to circle like buzzards flying of a road-side kill.
What happens if we win 0 to 2 games this year and then have 3 or less wins next year? How ugly will it get then? And w/the way this team is constructed, both those win totals are a very real possibility.

I think looking into next year, If we have a good draft and use ours picks as they are (no trade downs in the first 2 rounds anyway) BPA. And then in FA grab 2 or 3 top self guys, we could start to be coming up in the world. We don't have to drag this out more than 3 years. IMO.

Couldn't agree less Vers ...
LOVE the plan ... the execution is an entirely different story ...
One thing we do agree on ... WHY WERE HERE ...
And it has nothing to do with the FO and EVERYTHING to do with the OWNER/THIEF/SCUMBAG ..
The reason we brought MONEYBALL in was cause the THIEF is so inept at hiring football people that can even come close to getting along ...
The fact we have no football people in our FO is MINDBOGGLING to me ... and no Barry don't count .. he's a baby in the game ...

Diam, the plan is full of potential problems. I also consider Haslam as one of the guys who installed the plan. He is the one who had the meeting w/Sam Hinkie.
We, like the 76ers, are being asked to "trust the process." Ehhh..........I am not one to blindly trust anyone w/out any evidence of success.

I said i liked the plan (most of it .. thought they should have re-signed schwartz in a Nano second and brought in some 2nd tier FA's ... and not traded down so many times ... no problems going to 15 but at some point U have to start picking players instead of aquiring later rnd. Picks) ... anyhow .. i regress into the convo i didn't want to have with u .. *L* .. I agree on Haslam and trusting people .. in this case .. were screwed until we cut off the head IMO ... I also think this FO is doomed for failure ...

I think a lot of the problems with our QB play this season is that they've been practicing against our secondary every day. I'm guessing it looks nothing like what they see on game day.
Same thing for our receivers. They get open in practice, but the timing is probably a lot different against competent DBs.

If that were the case, could you imagine the pass rush teeing off and bullrushing Erving every play? Might as well start planning Kessler's funeral now.

Cody was another awful draft pick. He was a huge reach in the third round and would have been a huge reach in the 5th round. This sounded like a Hue pick as you don't go out and say "trust me on this one" if it wasn't. So the whole...Hue is a QB guru thing...give me a break. I mean he was ranked so far down most lists of prospects that the only reason some people knew who he was is the fact that he played at USC. With that said, he has performed fairly well for a guy with his limited skill set and who was thrown into a situation with very little talent to work with. His ceiling is probably a spot starter/backup and I see his career following the path of someone like Hoyer. We need a good starting QB prospect in this next draft to build around. Pull the damn trigger and quit trading down.

Cody was another awful draft pick. I don't think he was an awful pick. He went higher than I thought he should of, but he looks like he can have a fairly long career in the NFL. Teams need backup QBs.

I view Cody as overdrafted and I think Hue's actually done well with him until this past week.
He's not the most gifted QB, but he's been serviceable, which is more than I anticipated. He could be a good backup IMO

Teams need backup QBs. I just felt like they could have waited and got him later, but all teams reach for guys they like. At least he's a player that as you are saying, has a place in the NFL. Starter or not. Heck, we've drafted players in the 3rd round that didn't make it past camp.

And w/the way this team is constructed, both those win totals are a very real possibility. Haslam should face the press, before the year is over, and make a statement saying something like this: "When we made the decision to essentially start this team over from scratch, building from and through the draft, we knew that it would be a slow, difficult process. Players don't enter the NFL fully developed, especially when they are playing beside other young players. I understand the process, and am committed to it. Hue Jackson will be our coach next year, and our front office will be here as well. They have worked very hard, and I know how hard it has been for them going through this difficult, developmental season. It has been hard for me, and I don't work for me. ha ha I will not make any changes this season, after this season, or next year. I have learned that we have to commit to the plan, and that it is impossible to completely tear down and rebuild a team in a single season. We are also developing a coaching staff, and that is a process as well. I am not making any changes there either. If Hue feels that he needs to make an adjustment, then that is entirely up to him. I will not interfere." I think that something like that would help allay some of the fears of the fans, and the team as well.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I do wish that Haslam/Sashi/Depo would be more present in the media. Just to shield some attention away from Hue and the players ... just to be open and supportive IMO

I think a lot of the problems with our QB play this season is that they've been practicing against our secondary There could be something to this. But I think Cody has played well all things considered. He played better then I expected. I think playcalling was as big an issue with the passing game as QB play. They seemed more focused on pushing the ball vertically downfield straight line then developing a passing game that fit his skillset like the deep crossing route to Devalve. I thought Cody's inability to drive the ball on comeback/stop routes was more evident this game. Sideline stop routes shouldn't float in. I haven't watched the all 22 but from the TV feed it seemed like Cody bailed out of the pocket on too many plays. But even with those issues I still believe it didnt warrant turning to McCown.

^^1st 3rd down (the receiver at the bottom of the screen was running a comeback route not a vertical route) ^^2nd 3rd down Coleman PI on comeback route that Cody floated in too high instead of driving the ball with velocity

Started reading his progression left to right, the 1st read was the 'low' route TE drag which looked covered the 2nd read was the high route deep dig which looked covered- Cody doesn't look to his 3rd progression which is Devalve? on the seam on the right which looks open, but Cody bailed the pocket and checks it down to Crow

Ya .. the checkdown to Crow ...
Dude .. our OLman's foot is almost stepping on Cody's foot .. If Cody didn't move right he would have had our OLman in his lap about a second after that shot was taking ... and remember .. Cody was all ready starting to roll ...
He had a good pocket up to that point ... but he either had to roll right or go backwords and then roll left ..
I'm not sure how u think when that photo was snapped how at that point he had a good pocket ...

j/c... Jordan Zirm Verified account @clevezirm Looking for reasons why Hue was upset with Kessler. On the Browns first drive, Higgins comes open over the middle. Kessler throws ball away. This was the play that had Hue pretty agitated on the sideline afterwards. Kessler never looked to the right side of the field. In the All-22, you can see Hue with his arms in the air as Kessler leaves the pocket and tosses the ball out of bounds. He was pissed Tweet

Good stuff .. thanks man ...
I said in one of the 6 Cody threads .. *L* ..
That he is cutting off 1/2 the field himself cause he is not going through his reads anymore ...
Cody's actually regressed in this area ...
We need to win a game for Hue's sake .. he is not handling this very well .. he needs to be a LEADER ... he sets the example for everyone around him ...

Man bro that's gonna be hard when he has 2 bum QB's, one injured, and hogan.
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if he says 'screw it' and starts hogan one of these guys.
Our QB's right now are just simply trash.

Our QB's right now are just simply trash. I didn't say it was EASY!! .. *L* .. I feel for the guy ... one of the things i love about Hue is his passion .. but right now that same passion is a negative cause he takes it so hard its KILLING HIM .. u can see it .. its sucked the life right out of him .. he used to look passionate and excited now he looks depressed and beaten up ... He looked miserable on the sidelines from the 1st play .. and i don't blame him and i get it .. but he also needs to realize the team will follow his example .. the players all love the guy ... and for now .. he has to somehow stay positive .. he can't have a depressed look on his face and have negative body language on the sideline .. A few weeks ago when he went off on the D .. NO PROBLEM with that at all .. they were playing like crap and he got peed and laid into him .. NO PROBLEMS ..... and i get why he looks like a kid that got charcoal on Christmas day .. but he can't do that .. And i agree .. our QB's are trash ...

Yep, the mounting losses are taking a toll on Hue. He's desperate for a win and reacting accordingly. Unfortunately for him, I don't see a win this year.

j/c... 1. I didn't like him pulling Kessler at all and that is not with hind sight that McCown just sucked it up.
2. Kessler's prowess is in his reads and accuracy. Which as a rookie that was not groomed to ever start this season is going to have their difficulties.
3. Will he get better? Time will tell as Diam said its a pure 3 year assessment on his game getting there.
4. Hue said right away after the game (Friday Morning) that Kessler will remain our starter. Of course as a Coach you cannot say I messed up in putting in McCown. It was a decision he made and thought was correct at the time...too bad McCown could not execute.
5. When told there wasn't a top rated QB in the draft to use an early pick...he stated there is. don't know if that is Watson or the kid from Washington?
jmho sick as a dog so not here long or often this week...first time out of bed to go downstairs as wife went to church. Pneumonia for me is dangerous...on the cusp of that one. Hope the Antibiotics work.

...I'm not sure how u think when that photo was snapped how at that point he had a good pocket ... I'll address your last point first. There's is very good reason why: 'you're not sure how [I] think when that photo was snapped how at that point he had a good pocket..." And that reason is because I never said that. He had a good pocket up to that point ... but he either had to roll right or go backwords and then roll left.. He had a good pocket up until that point and he had several options, he could have also stepped up into the pocket and made the throw. And to be clear, I don't fault Cody for being a bit skiddish in the pocket because he has legitimate reason not to trust the pass protection. I'm posting these screen caps as a frame of reference. Obviously a screen cap only captures a split second in time. To get the full "picture" you still need to view the play again in video. But here is the same play just a split second earlier:

Sometime's coaches overreact, sometime coaches see the field differently then the player....that's how post game coaches say they need to watch the tape. This article seems to say that because Hue appears to be upset at Cody what happened on that play was Cody's fault. While I agree that Higgin's was open on the backside I think there is a good reason why Cody didn't get to that read and that's because he bailed form the pocket in face of pressure...#99 splits a double team and get's free: The flip side of the argument and its something I've noticed more the past 2 weeks from Kessler AND I wonder if its in response to the edict to push the ball downfield BUT Cody has been turning down open short gains looking for the 'big' ball. On this play he could have hit Duke in the flat OR Pryor on the short hitch/rub route for Barnidge's corner route. IF Cody hit either of those 2 shorter routes then he wouldn't have to bail from the pocket in the first place. For me its a question of the chicken or the egg. I think Cody is passing up short run after the catch routes in an effort to push force the ball downfield.
