Dotting the ‘Eyes: Ohio State impresses Georgia duo, catching up on a new offer

Jeremy Birmingham
Land Of 10 Staff

Recruiting never stops, and if you take a day off, you fall behind. Join us every night for a daily recap of Ohio State recruiting news, insight on what’s happening behind the scenes, and a glimpse at what’s coming next.

Buckeyes impress 2019 Georgia 5-star …

Two of Georgia’s best 2019 prospects visited Ohio State last weekend for the Buckeyes’ home game against Nebraska. Frederica Academy (St. Simon’s Island) wideout Jashawn Sheffield – the country’s top-ranked wide receiver – and teammate Jaylin Simpson both traveled north to Columbus.

“The whole trip,” Sheffield said. “The whole trip was awesome. The relationship the players have with the coaches. How much fun the players have. Loved the campus and the game. I also like what the football program does for the players outside of football. They have a top 16 business school and that is one of the majors I’m interested in.

“It was my best visit yet.”

Sheffield holds 17 scholarship offers, including from schools like Clemson, Florida State, Michigan, Georgia and Florida. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound wideout has visited more than a few schools on his list. He was happy to have the chance to get to Ohio State early in the process.

“I’ve been to Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Tennessee,” he said. “I was blessed to be able to come this time. A great family helped make it happen. I enjoyed my time hanging out with Urban Meyer. We hung out for a few minutes at the hotel. His speech during the hype video pumped me up. That was a pretty cool experience.”

… and his teammate

Coming north with Sheffield was his classmate, Jaylin Simpson, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound defensive back. Though unranked, Simpson has offers from LSU, Florida, Miami, North Carolina, Tennessee and Ohio State.

Coming into the trip, Simpson was eager to check out the game-day atmosphere in Columbus. As you’d expect, he came away very impressed.

“It went good,” Simpson said. “I had fun. I really impressed in the way the coaches and players got along. During pregame everyone was smiling and just having fun, all the coaches and players. You can tell they love the game.”

Simpson was on the field with a few Buckeyes assistants alongside Sheffield prior to the start of the game.

“I hung out with Urban Meyer for a bit, and then Zach Smith and Eron Hodges,” he said. “It was really nice. I could definitely see myself playing up there.”

Back to South Florida for another wide receiver?

The Buckeyes roster has a number of South Florida wide receivers, and this week they offered a player they hope will be one of their next ones.

That is Kevin Austin, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound athlete from North Broward Prep in Pompano Beach. The country’s 43rd-ranked wide receiver prospect, Austin holds offers from Notre Dame, Miami, Michigan State and Wisconsin among his 23.

“Urban Meyer offered,” Austin told Land of 10. “It was great to hear from the head coach himself. They’ve been recruiting me a couple of months.”

Austin is aware of the number of South Florida standouts making a name for themselves in Columbus. He admitted that catches his attention.

“I know Ben (Victor) from Coconut Creek,” Austin said. “It helps they have that many guys up there. I think they have a strong program and really great academics. I want to visit next spring or summer.”

Ohio State plays an improved Maryland team today. I think they have recruited well recently and are a team on the rise.

Do they still have that mobile QB that has shredded us?

Wow! Crazy day for Ohio State.

They destroyed Maryland and Clemson, A&M, Auburn, and Washington lost. Great news.

Now, the bad news. Indiana outplayed Penn St all game long and had them on the ropes, but ended up losing. Then, Iowa beats that TUN.

We would have won a 3-way tie w/TUN and Penn St. Now, we lose the tiebreaker with Penn St if both teams win out.

If it plays out that way, it's going to be a tough call for the committee.

i would have preferred to have all of the favorites win in retrospect haha. All you can do now is win out and make the resume as good as possible.

Depends on what the committee wants. Do they want the 4 best teams or 4 conference champions?

I don't think it will be all that tough unless a few teams lose their conference championship. As I said in another thead, the BIG 10 champ will get in. I don't see how a 3rd place conference finish is going to allow OSU to make the final 4 teams. OSU needs to get in to the Big 10 championship game. PSU is in if they win out. They have Rutgers on the road....a game they can win, and then a good MSU team, but that is at home. That's a white out game for sure.

peen, you may be forgetting that if Penn St wins those last two games, they still have to face Wisconsin [probably] in the title game. From what I have seen, Wisconsin is the better team.

Btw.......Sparty stinks this year.

Ohio State hits two this week and can still beat a top 10 team. I'm not sure how 3 teams could possibly jump them.

lol, especially when I think I was thinking of the guy from Rutgers.

...maybe not, one of those horrible recent additions.

If LSU can get into a top two scenario after finishing third in the SEC, why couldn't Ohio State get into a top 4 scenario? Especially in a year where the Big 12 and Pac 12 look to be very down. The Big Ten is the best conference in the nation and could get two in this year.

I've been against it in the past, but would love to see my team benefit the same way LSU did.

Ok....Sparty stinks.......just think about it. I know you think I don't like OSU, but that isn't true. Just think about it. If they come in to what amounts to a tie for 3rd in the Big 10, how do they make it??....again, assuming not some very long shot happenings.

I and you know they deserve to be a top 4 team, but you aren't going to have 2 Big 10 teams in the final 4 teams.

Not going to happen. At least how it shakes out this year, as it stands.

I just can't wrap my mind around them selecting a two loss team over a one loss team, with that one loss vs a top 10 opponent....and the two loss team losing to an unranked opponent.

Why? We have 5 power conferences and the Big 12 and PAC 12 have no shot this year. So that means there is 4 spots and 4 conferences who can have playoff members. So who gets the second team? The SEC doesn't even have a top 10 team this year outside of Bama. The ACC winner is going to knock the other ACC team out. So that leaves the Big 10 with 2 possible slots.

I just have a hard time believing that if OSU wins out and beats a top 5 Michigan team that three teams would be able to jump them. Especially since you would have to consider that OSU is 3-1 against top 10 teams this season and have severely outscored two of them.

Jester asked this question in the locked College Football thread:

Quote:
Question for everyone.

When evaluating a teams strength of schedule, do you look at how a team was ranked at the time they played or at the end of the season?

Say in week #2 you beat a top 5 team. But they end up losing 3 games and finish ranked #15.
Then you beat a team in week #3 that was ranked #22 at the time but ends up with only 2 losses and finish up ranked #10 overall.

Which is the more impressive victory?

I think it's both.

I think the final ranking is much more important, but you can't dismiss a team's early ranking. For example, a team could be ranked high and playing well early in the year. You beat them and then they lose their QB and suffer some other key injuries. Their morale is shot and they lose a couple of more games and fall down in the polls. I don't think you can dismiss that early victory just because they fell in the polls.

But yes, the final rankings are more important.

I think each conference should change their division tiebreaker rules to account for the CFP. Meaning, the first tiebreaker is CFP ranking. That would ensure the highest ranked team in the division can enhance their CFP resume by advancing to the conference title game.

I predicted this scenario between OSU and PSU a year back (not specifically the teams, but the scenario). I don't know how to search the archives though.

True, I suppose it could happen. Maybe PSU loses and it won't come down to a selection.

Yep. Divisions are stupid. If someone wants to read what a divisionless B1G (aka paradise) would look like, I attached a link below that covers it in extreme detail.

Just a quick thought, I've never considered Penn State and Illinois as rivals. I feel that was something which was manufactured.

Just read that Speight has a broken collar bone. Out for the season. Guess tOSU will get UM's back up QB in two weeks.

Let's say their backup stinks and then OSU rolls them in two weeks while PSU wins the Big10 title game.

Can OSU use the "injured QB" Michigan win as fuel to why they need to be in over PSU?

bet u wouldn't say that to the illibuck's face.

But honestly, I'd rather see Wisconsin on there than either Penn State or Illinois. Also not sure how I feel playing against Lovie Smith every single year.

FIU made a controversial hiring today. They signed our guy Butch Davis. A school like that needs to make a boom / bust hiring though.

Butch back in Florida isn't that bad of an idea. He was doing pretty good at UNC until he Butch'd it all up.

They'll be better than they are for the next guy in like 3 years at least.

Even if OSU doesn't make it to the playoffs. 2017 was the year I've been looking at and have talked about since LAST year. 2017 is going to be a historically great team. This is one of the youngest teams in college football and might be the youngest. Hope you guys don't get tired of watching OSU compete for national championships every year lol.

Next years team probably won't have: Curtis Samuel (our only loss on offense), Raekwon, Hooker, Lattimore, and maybe Conley (I can see Conley staying). Those guys can be all replaced though as crazy as that sounds. Front 7 will be a pack of wild dogs next year and the young pups on the o-line will be all grown up.

For recruiting, I've read that we sit good with 5* LB Baron Browning. That would be a pleasant surprise for me.

If you want Ohio State to make the playoffs comfortably, here's what you need to watch:

Oklahoma vs West Virginia is a big deal. If Oklahoma wins, this eliminates the Big 12. The entire conference would have 2 loss teams. Also helps that OSU won head to head vs Oklahoma.

Washington vs Washington State is another huge one. This game will happen after thanksgiving on a Friday. If Washington State wins, this eliminates the PAC 12 from consideration, because every team would have 2 losses.

I don't see JT leaving. His skill set isn't suited for the NFL. At the very least, he has a lot of work to do.

If I go based on purely the 4 best teams right now:

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Louisville
4. Clemson / Wisconsin = Tiebreaker to Clemson

Wow what happened to Michigan State?

The Spartans are 22 1/2 underdawgs against the Buckeyes this week.

I don’t recall ever seeing Michigan State that big of an underdawg against Ohio State.

This is good news for us. Beating TUN will carry more weight. I was predicting it would be:

Bama
OSU
Louisville
Clemson/TUN
TUN/Clemson
Washington

I am shocked that the #3 team can lose to an unranked 4-loss team and not drop in the standings.
