The weather starts to drop below freezing, and that brings frosty foggy morning to the far remote reaches of Alaska.

Not the clearest image but I thought I'd share. Took my dog for a walk yesterday as the sun was coming up. It didn't start raining until the last couple minutes of our walk.

This was over my road.

I'm thinking of joining the DSLR world by purchasing a basic Nikkon D3300 camera. Would that be a good choice? I have a fairly limited budget. Thanks!

Being a Canon man, I'd say get the Rebel T5i kit with 2 lenses to get your feet wet. I'm so sold on those for people starting out. I even had my son get the T3i kit and he's never looked back. Read the book "Understanding Exposure" buy Bryan Peterson. It's an easy read and he'll have you shooting outside the idiot mode in no time.

thank you - I'll check them out! I learned some of the basics at a Cleveland Photographic Society class a couple of years ago, but am always looking to learn more!

All my shots use the D3300.

The sensor blows any Canon out of the water. I say go with the D3300.

Lol. That's a highly subjective, opinionated and false statement. The aps-c sensor in the 3300 will not blow the doors off of a Canon full frame sensor. It has more pixels (24mp vs 18mp) than the sensor in the T5i, but unless you're doing heavy duty editing or wanting to shoot poster size prints, the difference is negligible. I've taken fantastic shots with a 6.3mp camera. She really can't go wrong with either Nikon or Canon, as they're the top two dogs in the game. Here's a comparison site that may help her make a decision.

Keep in mind you'll be shooting in RAW and will want to have an editing program like Lightroom/Photoshop. Those are 10/month or an outright fee.

Canon has a free editing program and while I don't know, I'm sure that Nikon does too. So you don't necessarily have to pay that to Adobe. Also you can shoot in jpg format, RAW is not forced on you. There's not much flexibility with jpg but the file stores faster and is much smaller.

Yep. RAW is not required at all. Many pros shoot jpg. I actually recommend shooting jpg to start, you may never want to shoot RAW due to the extra processing required and wanting to see beautiful images straight out of the camera. These images can also have all of the processing done to them that RAW images can except for white balance.

The benefit of RAW is that you get the pic exactly as captured by the processor, with no in camera editing done. You also have more pixels to work with. A RAW pic right out of the camera is nothing to look at, and you really need some post processing skills to make it into something worth showing. It is also a lossless format and won't degrade from frequent opening and copying. You'll have to save an edited RAW image into another format when you're finished.

Also, if you shoot at high resolution jpeg (300dpi or higher) the naked eye cannot detect any compression once the image is printed (even if printed large). Photos are made up of dots so 300 dots per inch is the standard for a printed image otherwise you risk pixallization or low resolution on the image.

Think of it also like digital music....128kbps download is the fastest but, the compression is so bad the music, especially if it is rock or has a lot of heavy bass/drums, will be distorted. 250kbps is better and you will notice less compression distortion. However 320kbps is best. The average ear cannot detect a difference. FLAC is even better as it is completely lossless. So, a FLAC file, IN THEORY, should sound no different than a physical record or mastertape if put to a blind audio test. But, ipods cannot store FLAC files. I don't think so, anyway. Also, the less compression you go the larger the files and the less your camera and ipod/itouch can store. All of the above comparison with music is essentially the same between JPEG and RAW. Raw also allows you to edit without touching the master print. The Nikon will also give you the ability to shoot in both RAW and JPEG. That, however, doubles your photo and fills your camera card quicker. Camera cards these days are so cheap that a 16gb or 32gb (or higher) will store thousands.

While I am talking about digital files for music...I should point out for all of those who do listen to digital music via ITunes etc....ITunes quality used to be set at 128kbps on all their downloads (as a default). This was and is a total rip off. I believe it is now set to 250 on downloads but, I still think this is a total scam. If you are buying the music you should be able to download at 320. Also, the upload compression default (uploading a cd to your library) was set at 128kbps and most did not know this or know how to change it. You can, however, go into your preferences and change the upload to 320kbps. I highly recommend you do it. Your ears will thank you.

Sorry to kinda go off topic but, I thought it was a fair comparison to make.

...as will Canon. I always shoot both. If I'm taking a lot of pics, many times the jpeg right out of the camera is really good and I don't have to PP. The camera I have now will hold both a 64G SD and a 64G CF card. I don't do video (yet anyway) so those cards will last a loooong time.

Got out last night to take some photos, and I'm blown away with what I came out with.

My favorite astrophotography shot. I bought this lens to get pictures just like that. Amazing what the Milky Way looks like after a good minute exposure.

No tricks here. Just a minute long exposure.

Bigger
Feels like a Kubrick movie.

It may be the little dipper, but it sure looks big.

Rocket - those are some seriously awesome pics! My son has always wanted to see a sky like that and it is hard to find a spot without light pollution...Kudos!

Also - I'm looking for good hosting site for photos - the only one I know of is Photobucket but have never used it. I am looking at the Imgur site you have yours (i have never heard of it) - is this where you host most of your pics from? I'm looking for a good safe & secure sharing site for friends and family if anyone has some good suggestions - as well as loading photos into Dawg Talkers.

Those sky shots are beautiful. Here in most of Connecticut, you can't see the Milky Way.

Way too much "light pollution" due to the population density.

Here's a self portrait I shot tonight. I used a little blue LED light to cast the shadows, and make the color.

I set up my own website via Wix. But, I have used PhotoBucket to share photos on DawgTalkers. PhotoBucket works fine but, there are a TON of ads, which are annoying.

Picasa is a decent photo sharing site. I believe Google owns it too.

I did it - bought a Nikon D3300 camera! My son Edwin uses the same kind in school. He will be getting one as a high school graduation present.

Got a $50 accessory kit which included a camera bag, 64G memory card, 2 extra lenses (Not sure what they are yet), a tripod which attaches to things, and some other stuff. Not bad for $50.

I spent 30 minutes learning how to attach the strap to the camera - can't believe they don't include the instructions how to do that. I finally found a youtube video that helped.

Looking forward to taking some pictures tomorrow.

You've been stricken. There's no turning back now. Congrats! Be ruthless in culling your pics. Only keep the really good ones...there will be a lot of them and they pile up fast.

Congrats! Good purchase too. It will most likely last a very long time and you can choose to invest more $ into even better lenses. If you do fall in love with Photography and it becomes more than just a hobby you can one day purchase a nicer camera body but, the 3300 is an *excellent* camera for its money and as the lenses come off you can continue to upgrade with better glass.

The lenses you received may be a zoom (50-200/300mm and maybe a macro or wide angle?). If you have one of the smaller ones that come in leather pouches and narrow plastic threading they probably screw onto the threading at the end of the actual lens that is already on your body. If, however, they have noticeably longer threading with metal then they screw direct into the body itself. If you have one of the former....be careful as you attach it so you don't scratch the other lens' glass.

I hope that makes sense. The manuals are always a chore but, good reference to keep going back to. YouTube vids are also helpful and there are plenty of them online.

Have fun!

Multnomah Falls lies 30 miles to the east of Portland. Usually swarmed with tourists but, the recent bitter cold has kept them away. Good for us as we rarely stop but, while hiking yesterday with our dogs we decided to swing by to see the frozen ice sculpture that the cold weather has magnificently sculpted into the cliffs that surround its pools. It looks like a beautiful wedding cake or medieval church pipe organ....Mother Nature at her very best. On a side note it is also a rarity to photograph the falls with nobody on the bridge!

In Ohio for the holidays, and I'm spending time with family in Columbus, Ohio this week. Went to a Blue Jackets game tonight, and headed to the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday! Took tonight to shoot pictures, and that's due to the fact I REALLY want to just watch on Thursday. A win on Thursday puts the Jackets in first place in the ENTIRE NHL!

Anyhow, tonight's game!

Bigger

Curtis McElhinney started, and Sergei Bobrovsky got the night off. Usually he's halfway decent between the pipes.

Bigger

Hard fought face offs all night by both teams. Just look at the attack angle on that stick!

Bigger

Sam Gagne just barely misses a goal scoring opportunity.

Bigger

Tempers did flare as the night went on. A nice little scrum happened at this point in the game.

Bigger

The good guys prevailed! Our backup saved 48/50 goals! We won in a shootout, and our goalie received the second star of the night!

Bigger

Cam Atkinson, Columbus Forward who scored all the points and won the shootout, shines with his personality. Cam's such a nice guy, and he gave a fan one of his sticks from tonight.

Nice photos Rocket. I am surprised the venue allowed you to take your Nikon inside. Here, at Trailblazers or Timbers games you are not allowed to bring a DSLR camera inside. Photos can only be taken with phones or the crappy Point & Shoots.

Nationwide states on their website about how they encourage professional gear. I think it helps that Columbus' hockey market is tiny, and any sort of free press could help.

I remember visiting Dallas last year, and the NBA's strict camera policy saddened me. I still enjoyed the game, but I REALLY wanted to take some pictures.

Yea, it is the same at concerts. I think the NBA & certain musicians/bands are probably trying to control what photos are sold/owned for press or their own marketing/merchandise purposes.
