There are reports of an active shooter with injuries on Ohio State’s campus. Here is what we know:

UPDATE @10:37 a.m.

An eyewitness told CNN he saw people running and walked toward where people were running from, where he saw a body on the ground.

Another witness who spoke to CNN said he heard gunshots.

10TV is reporting Columbus SWAT has been called to the scene.

UPDATE @10:30 a.m.

Injuries have been reported following reports of an active shooter on Ohio State University’s campus.

The Lantern, Ohio State’s student newspaper, is reporting there’s at least one body bag present in front of Koffolt Labs. Networks in Columbus are reporting there are seven people transported to hospitals.

Students and staff have been told to continue to shelter in place and the incident is not over.

FIRST REPORT

There are reports of an active shooter at The Ohio State University.

A tweet sent from OSU Emergency Management just before 10 a.m. said “Buckeye Alert: Active shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College.â€

Five minutes later, a second tweet was sent out, saying “Buckeye Alert: Continue to shelter in place. Avoid area of College. More information to follow.â€

Middletown Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw tweeted a picture of the scene around Ohio State, saying his son sent him the picture.

“Active shooter at Ohio State. My son just sent me this picture. Run or fight. Never hide. Don’t give a shooter the advantage. #surviveâ€

Holy crap.

Quote:
What I've been told from people on campus at buildings near the shooting at Watts Hall and sourced from official sources (CPD, OSU) on Twitter:

At least 7 shot or taken to hospital, 1 in critical condition. One body bag on the sidewalk in front of Koffolt Labs.

Full campus on lockdown.

The attack was allegedly a two-person attack coordinated between the pair. A fire alarm was pulled in Watts Hall and when people had clustered outside, a car jumped the curb and rammed into the group. The stabbing and shooting followed.

Students are still being told to stay indoors and under lockdown.

One suspect has allegedly been put in custody while police sweep the Lane and Tuttle Garage and Watts Hall for potential other suspects

Just another day in the U.S.A. Today Obama gives another condolence speech to victims families. Today or Tomorrow Trump's delivers his first of many condolence speeches to victims families. Tomorrow, mental health, and weapon control talk. The day after that....forgotten. The beat goes on to the next attack.

Don't know if you or anybody else noticed? But this was a stabbing and use a car as a weapon crime. The shots fired were from the Police. Ban all knifes and Cars!

Fixed it.

Don't know if you or anyone else noticed that the point was that this will all be forgotten in a few days and little will be done to help prevent it from happening.

But good on you mate for reprimanding me for the slightest mention of gun control. thumbsup

This does not surprise me. There are large numbers of young people with mental illness and they don't feel comfortable talking to their parents, teachers, or counselors about it. It is only a matter of time before someone snaps. There needs to be an easier way for people to get help.

That's exactly why I said that. To many people want to jump on the "it's all the guns fault" anytime something happens. Just trying to keep some from going off the deep end when they read about "shots fired" and jump to conclusions.

So .... how would gun control have prevented an attack using a car and knife/knives?

Sometimes people just snap. I think that a lot of it has to do with the isolation so many people feel these days.

Were there signs that the attacker was on the verge of doing something like this? Who knows? Just assuming that there was some institutional breakdown is premature, at best.

The victims in this case, according to the report on right now, the person drove his car over the curb and hit people, and then used a butcher knife to slash at people.

Are we going to ban knives that people use for cooking? Cars? If not, then how do you prevent this kind of attack?

I, and many others, have long said that if a person wants to hurt and/or kill people, they will find a way. You can claim that this was some kind of mental health issue, but then how do you handle that? Do you force people into the shrink's office? If so, how? Do you make every person in the country undergo psychological care on a pro-active basis? If so, how do you justify that course of action, not to mention handling the cost?

Man, you have been really salty since the election. I didn't like the outcome either, but the American people have spoken, and frankly, I wasn't going to be happy with anyone who could have won.

Humans are so vain to think they can still legislate weapons. We've been killing each other since inception with rocks, arrows, swords, bombs and now guns. Despite having thousands of years to create legislation that stops killing we haven't. But we have tried. Swords used to be regulated to make sure they didn't go over certain sizes and what not, but people kept killing each other. You cannot stop murders through weapon legislation. There needs to be a break in the Eurocentric view of life we have.

It now appears the attacker, a Muslim Somali refugee, acted alone.
Drove his car through the victims, got out and started stabbing and slashing people.

I am glad Trump is going to put an end to letting these refugees into our country. The Democrats talk about gun control and they open the borders and bring the violence in.

I'm thankful for the gun laws on the books right now that obviously help to prevent this guy from buying any. This guy couldn't get his hands on any guns. Who knows what the body count could have been if he had guns.

I dunno. Look at how we have to "protect" young people from ideas they might disagree with. Look a hos some young people reacted to the election. One girl was throwing a tantrum yelling "You better fix this because he (Trump) cannot be President.", or words to that effect. We are building a society with a this bizarre combination of alienation and group think. crazy Truly scary stuff.

Which is exactly what I meant by "emotionally and mentally fragile".... We have a lot of young folks (and some old folks) who have poor socialization skills and absolutely can't handle controversy or rejection...

Exactly.

And if you talk to 100 teachers, I bet that 95-98 of them will tell you that what's happening in the schools only nurtures the problems that these troubled youths have.

They aren't held accountable. Excuses are made. Plans are written. They get their way and other students suffer because of it. Teachers and other students receive blame. All you gotta do is mention the word "bully" and the crap hits the fan.

The problem becomes full-blown when these kids reach adult-hood. No one is making excuses for them anymore. No one is changing the rules so they can continue on acting inappropriately. Their selfish behavior is frowned upon rather than getting them more rewards and privileges.

They are rejected in the work place. They are rejected socially. They assign blame and don't recognize that they are to blame for their own shortcomings. They then lash out and we are surprised as a nation.

Look, I don't believe in just punishing students who misbehave, but it is high time we stop enabling poor behavior and try to teach these troubled kids that their inappropriate behavior will not be accepted. I don't want to punish them, but we gotta help them. Blaming everyone else and allowing them to repeatedly misbehave is not helping.

We are making monsters. And again, the vast majority of teachers has known that for quite some time now.

From the archives: Ohio State attacker featured in ‘Humans of Ohio State’

By Kevin Stankiewicz and Jay Panandiker: stankiewicz.16@osu.edu and panandiker.1@osu.edu November 28, 2016

On Monday afternoon, the Ohio State Department of Public Safety released the name of the suspect involved in the violent incident near Watts Hall — Abdul Razak Ali Artan, a third-year in logistics management. The Lantern had interviewed Artan as part of Humans of Ohio State, a print-only feature in The Lantern’s Arts&Life section. Below, The Lantern has reproduced the same interview that appeared in the Aug. 25 issue of the paper. The text below is a direct quote from Artan.

“I just transferred from Columbus State. We had prayer rooms, like actual rooms where we could go pray because we Muslims have to pray five times a day.

“There’s Fajr, which is early in the morning, at dawn. Then Zuhr during the daytime, then Asr in the evening, like right about now. And then Maghrib, which is like right at sunset and then Isha at night. I wanted to pray Asr. I mean, I’m new here. This is my first day. This place is huge, and I don’t even know where to pray.

“I wanted to pray in the open, but I was scared with everything going on in the media. I’m a Muslim, it’s not what the media portrays me to be. If people look at me, a Muslim praying, I don’t know what they’re going to think, what’s going to happen. But, I don’t blame them. It’s the media that put that picture in their heads so they’re just going to have it and it, it’s going to make them feel uncomfortable. I was kind of scared right now. But I just did it. I relied on God. I went over to the corner and just prayed.â€

He was worried about what people would think of him praying in a public area (cause arent we supposed to supply private areas for muslims to pray???)

So, he was worried what people might think of him......so he decided to ram a car over as many people as he could, then get out of the car and start stabbing them?

Wait - what was he concerned about again?
