So the attacker ran people over with his car because he's upset at the lack of places to pray on campus?!?! OSU campus is HUGE. He also came from Columbus State which is a LOT smaller, but nothing happened there. There was something extremely off with him mentally.

Not places to pray? Doesn't really make sense to me. You can pray anywhere you want. If you're a true believer you wouldn't care what other people thought. I remember when I went to OSU, I was sitting in a chair waiting for a class to start and saw one person go to a little alcove hallway by me where the drinking fountains were and start praying. I think he had a prayer mat. I thought it was a little weird because it was something I wasn't used to seeing. I didn't bother him, If I remember right I think I walked away and left him to it.
If someone cares what others think that much they have an issue. Obviously this guy was mentally not all there.

Which is exactly what I meant by "emotionally and mentally fragile".... We have a lot of young folks (and some old folks) who have poor socialization skills and absolutely can't handle controversy or rejection...
Exactly. And if you talk to 100 teachers, I bet that 95-98 of them will tell you that what's happening in the schools only nurtures the problems that these troubled youths have. They aren't held accountable. Excuses are made. Plans are written. They get their way and other students suffer because of it. Teachers and other students receive blame. All you gotta do is mention the word "bully" and the crap hits the fan. The problem becomes full-blown when these kids reach adult-hood. No one is making excuses for them anymore. No one is changing the rules so they can continue on acting inappropriately. Their selfish behavior is frowned upon rather than getting them more rewards and privileges. They are rejected in the work place. They are rejected socially. They assign blame and don't recognize that they are to blame for their own shortcomings. They then lash out and we are surprised as a nation. Look, I don't believe in just punishing students who misbehave, but it is high time we stop enabling poor behavior and try to teach these troubled kids that their inappropriate behavior will not be accepted. I don't want to punish them, but we gotta help them. Blaming everyone else and allowing them to repeatedly misbehave is not helping. We are making monsters. And again, the vast majority of teachers has known that for quite some time now. Vers, I think the long and short of it is that we just need to go back to being honest with them and teach them how to deal with it. - Sally is in a higher reading group because she reads better than you. You can get there if you work harder. - John made the basketball team and you didn't because he's a better basketball player than you. You can get there if you work harder. - You can't have the newest cell phone because we can't afford it. If you want one, get a job and save your money. - Mouthing off to your teacher is unacceptable, you will not get to play in the game tonight and I don't care that you are the best player. - Your homework is late? You get a 0. Not a do-over, not an extension, not a second chance. You get a 0. We don't need to go out of our way to create adversity or insult or belittle them, we just need to be honest with them. You aren't the greatest at everything and yes, as a matter of fact, you crap DOES stink.

I can tell you that your suggestions have absolutely no chance of ever coming to fruition.
It's not that I don't agree w/at least some of them. It's that we are so far removed from that line of thinking.
Let me give you a couple of situations I have experienced. Just to give you some flavor of how far removed we are from your common sense approach.
--A troubled student who had been in trouble every year of his school life, including punching a pregnant female teacher in the abdomen the year before, tackles a female student outside. He gets her down and is pulling her hair and talking about how he was going to f...... her right there. He slaps her repeatedly. He is grinding on top of her. A teacher sees it and physically pulls the offending student off of the [what he considered] victim.
Result: The boy received one afternoon in ISS [In School Suspension.] The teacher was brought up on charges by the district because he put his hands on the male student. A plan was put in place to develop a Student Leadership team where troubled students would be removed from the classrooms weekly and work w/administrators in making changes to school policies. The student who I mentioned was the first student named to that team. It was also ruled that he could leave class whenever he wanted to and that his teachers had to notify the office due to legal issues. He could curse his teachers and other students. It was deemed that because of his poor home life, these outbursts would actually help him control the anger he had w/in him. I could go on, but you get the picture.
--Another student. An obese student who did not want to do any work in the classroom. Came from a home where the mom was domineering and divorced the dad. During a conference w/me and the said student, she called the dad names that I cannot say on there. All the kid wanted to do was play video games. He was prone to instant bursts of rage. He once picked his nose, put the offending object on a girl beside him, and when she screamed, he hit her. He then started banging his head on the desk and screamed that he as being bullied. He did that a lot. Often, he would throw himself on the floor, banging his head, pounding his fists, and say that he was being bullied, even though he was the one who started picking on other students. Touching them, taking their pencils, kicking them, ripping their papers, etc. When they spoke up, he would freak out. His mother came in and blamed the teachers and administrators for allowing students to bully her son. She claimed we encouraged the bullying and threatened to sue us. A plan was put in place where no one was allowed to reply to him when he lashed out at him. We were not allowed to look at him if he threw one of his fits. It was decided that he did not have to do any homework, but would receive rewards if he did. He was also given the right to take naps in class, or ask to go to the nurses' office to nap there when he was tired. He test questions were cut in half. Low scores were to be dismissed. We were told to offer constant praise and to never discipline him. It goes on and on.
I know this all sounds hard to believe, but it's true.
The first kid has a great chance of ending up in prison if he continues on his ways. Prisons are full of guys w/his background.
The second kid is a candidate to be one of those mass murderers. And yes, there are many who think the very same thing.
I think changes need to be made. I like your ideas, but in today's education system, those are but a pipe dream. If there was a way to convince the decision makers that we are actually hurting our disturbed students by enabling poor behavior, than we might have a real chance at saving them............and a bunch of other folks, as well.

I think as a society we've became far too litigious, but I also understand that a lot of people see it as the only viable way to climbing the economic ladder. To me, it sounds like the kid got a free pass because the school was worried it could be sued on how they handled him. I mean, the kids know litigious society is too. It's crazy.

That is a good point. It's amazing that they can't solve simple mathematical equations, but they sure as hell "know their rights."
And look, I don't want to come off as some bitter man who wants kids punished. That is not how I am. I just have witnessed similar situations for so long and have determined it isn't working. I want those kids to receive help. They need help. Blaming everyone else and enabling poor behavioral choices does not help.
CHS, we often disagree on things, but I think you are intelligent. This is a real problem in our schools. And the citizens we develop in our schools eventually become citizens in our adult society. I don't know all the answers...............and I get overwhelmed at times when I try and think of how we can better the situation.

Both of your stories are sad, yet totally believable. And call me an old fart or nostalic, but I miss the days when both of those kids would have been sent home with a letter that said, "Straighten your kids up and don't send them back until you do." The root of the problem is not the school system, the root of the problem is the parents. The school system has been tasked with trying to fix it and taking the blame. The saddest part, there are a lot of good kids out there and they come from all races, religions, and income brackets... and they are the ones who suffer because they don't get the education they should when this type of behavior is tolerated around them. If there was a way to convince the decision makers that we are actually hurting our disturbed students by enabling poor behavior, than we might have a real chance at saving them............and a bunch of other folks, as well. Aaaaannnd I just knew the conversation would turn into this.
On behalf of people my age, I, Reggie, would like to take full responsibly for my actions.
I understand now that when I was 14, it was my fault for the computers not working. If only I had worked those coal mines the summer prior to starting high school, maybe I would've had the money to pay for the computers at school to work.
Also, I want to apologize for not providing the school with enough books to take home for homework. I understand now that if I would've busted my ass and worked like the other kids in the rich school districts, I would've had the money to provide my high school with the books needed to do proper homework and such.
I really apologize to the board, to the city, and to the country for not providing myself with the tools needed to have a proper education.

All, I want to apologize to the country for being the reason we didn't have substitute teachers when the real teachers missed time.
I understand now that at 14-15, I should've possessed the ability to teach myself complex mathematics, chemistry and literature like the rich kids in the suburbs do. The kids in the suburbs have so much higher intelligence than I do, as they have shown that they know more than the Subs when their teachers miss days in class.
Unfortunately, teaching myself science is an ability I did not possess when I was 14, and as such, I have failed this country.
My apologies

If you are done with your pity party, you will see that most of the blame is not being thrown at the kids, it's being thrown at the parents.. the folks my age, the folks running the schools and the school system.. the folks my age... The kids are the result of the problem more than they are the problem.. But for the life of me I still don't understand how some broken computers or text book shortages equate to hitting teachers, throwing tantrums, and general disobedience...

I think you are right that parents are to blame. I also think the media, legislators, and weak administrators are to blame. Every day when I go to my news-sites, I see something about how a teacher/school messed up. The media plays on that crap. Politicians look at public opinion and place blame on schools/teachers and pontificate about test scores. Administrators are back-room politicians and care more about public perception than they do the children and certainly, their employees. I can't believe I am saying this, but I wonder if privatizing education isn't such a bad idea.

You call it a pity party, I call it a response to you and the rest of the lot's rhetoric.
Arch with his constant "money" talk.
You and arch constant blame toward the kids who grow up in those crap environments.
If you don't want to read my counters, then you, arch, and vers can use the ignore feature.
Yea, some kids are out of control. But that isn't anywhere near most. Or the majority. They are a few minority of kids acting stupid, yet you decided that it must be the state of the new generation.
Like you do all the other times in this sorts of threads.
And I'll call you and the rest of these posters out all day everyday on it.
You and vers like to play the "don't generalize" card all the time, but then turn around and say that you don't understand how it equates to hitting teachers and such.
As if everybody is doing it, or the majority is.
Don't want a stupid response? Don't make a stupid post.

You connect two very interesting points.. education and politics. How do politicians get elected? By convincing you that they can fix the problems.. well it's hard to get elected to a school board or rise through the system if you look at the parents that you need to vote for you and say.. "YOU are the problem!" You have to say it's the system, because you can claim to know how to fix the system, you can't claim to be able to fix bad parents. I can't believe I am saying this, but I wonder if privatizing education isn't such a bad idea. Then it would be about profit and it would open itself up to all kinds of issues.. but mostly it would be hated because it wouldn't be "fair".. some privatized schools would be great, others would suck.... it's just better that we all struggle equally.

Exactly. A few kids are ruining it in some schools. Parenting is a huge, HUGE aspect of it swish. It really is. And it doesn't even have to be 2 parents - it does need to be at least 1 parent that instill in his/her kid that education is important. And more than that, at least at younger ages, a parent that sits down with their kid and helps them with homework. A school can only do so much, no matter how much money is thrown at them. Apparently your parents understood that. I have numerous friends that went to "city" schools that turned out as just fine people, even educated, in those public city schools. Toledo, and Denver to name a couple of cities. Those that wanted to be educated - those that were taught that school is a good thing - have done well. I have 2 cousins that got their initial teaching jobs in Charlotte NC. (public schools, low income areas) They now live and teach here. It's odd listening to them describe the difference in the students.

Poor thing... I'm still waiting for Obama to ruin my life but all I got was a job, health insurance, and cheaper gas.

I had a gf 30 years ago whose dad was an elementary school teacher and complained all the time that he had to spend 90% of his time dealing with the bottom 10% of his students (whether it was trying to get them caught up academically or trying to get them to behave)... So the whole concept is nothing new.. and I went to school in a small town but there was no hitting teachers or anything like the stuff I read about today. Maybe it was happening in bigger cities and I just didn't know about it.. but it sure "feels" worse today than it was then..

there's a lot of things going on lately that feel like it's getting worse.
but our feelings and what's actually happening tend to conflict with each other. even i have had to admit that to myself when it comes to certain aspects of race relations.

j/c First, I don't think anyone will be giving this officer a hard time for being "just a campus cop" for quite some time! My $.02 on the education topic that popped up... The problems in the school systems are 3 headed like the dog Cerberus. -You have some parents that literally believes their child does no wrong and raises hell when you show them differently. -You have some teachers who go beyond their scope as an educator and essentially indoctrinate the kids to become sympathetic to whatever their own beliefs are. For example, the day after the Election our 11yr old came home and told us how her teacher came in to class sobbing and told them she was going to be fired because she was gay. -And what I haven't seen mentioned yet is the administrators and their contribution to all this. my girlfriend is a school resource officer and she's constantly telling me how she hears teachers on the radio calling for administrators to handle the children who become problems... and no one responds. Teachers are constantly being left hung out to dry. This is also a school where the principal decided to allow an 11yr old boy to use the changing room with female students and then tried to hide the fact. This is also a school district that uses bussing to achieve diversity. Now originally they bussed based off of race and ethnicity but the Supreme Court said you couldn't do it based on those reasons even if the intention was supposed to be beneficial to all. So they went around it and based the bussing off of socio-economic status. Not a bad idea right? give the poor kids a chance to get in to the "richer" schools? It's a model that ultimately those kids are the ones who end up suffering for a couple of reasons. This model gets rid of the model that expects you to go to the neighborhood school. Children as young as kindergarten are on school busses for over an hour and a half... one way. Sending kids that far away reduces parent participation because many poor families don't have reliable transportation to get there. And if you have two kids a grade or two apart? You aren't even garunteed that they will go to the same school... Hell, they couldn't decide if year round or traditional was a better school calendar... so half the schools are traditional and half year round...smh This School District is such crap I actually wrote in Deez Nutz for School Board. When it comes to education in this country, students of all grade levels are not being set up for success.

Well, hard to disagree with you on this. I feel the same way about my daughter's school. Last year the school resource Officer was busted basically harassing a female student. This year two teachers were accused of touching students inappropriately. Sad thing is one of the allegations were proven false and the teacher who is well respected by the faculty as well as student body, life is now ruined. My issue is, the school failed to inform parents about the incidents. As a former law enforcement officer I get its an ongoing investigation, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with telling parents a member of the faculty has been charged with X,Y and Z. It's an ongoing investigation and we are not at liberty to offer additional details.
I feel for your girlfriend. I've seen some resource officers being used to enforce school policies as well as the law. This blurs the lines and allot of times sets them up to be the faculties "hired muscle" instead of peace officers.
I also believe we need an entire overhaul of the educational system. Its old and ineffective. Kids do not need to be in a class for eights hours a day. Or go to school for 13yrs. My niece graduated high school with an associates degree. That tells me she could have completed her education at least two years early.
We can't be afraid to change.
