I'm looking at ways to save some money, and heard of Skype from a friend. My current home phone with unlimited long distance is through AT&T and costs roughly $72.00 per month, with DSL internet at $20 per month.

I actually use my cell phone more, but would like to keep a home phone, because my TMobile service sometimes sucks where I live - and its easier to talk on a home phone to the parents or friends, etc.

Do any of you have experience with Skype? If you have it, what do you have for internet service? I have DirecTv, so cable internet service is out of the question. I believe with the DSL, you are required to have a phone line - I couldn't just pay AT&T to have DSL service....

Here is their site:

I use Vonage for home phone service at 14.99/mo. You keep your normal phones and stuff, which is nice and fairly easy to hookup.

They have two pricing plans, so it just depends on how much you use this phone. I don't use it much, so the 500 minutes per month for 14.99 works for me. http://www.vonage.com/services.php?lid=nav_services

And you get just about any possible add-on you might want included as well: http://www.vonage.com/features.php?lid=nav_features

If anyone is interested, send me a PM with your email address as Vonage has a promo now for a refer-a-friend deal thing. You get one full month free and I get two months free. Everyone gets free phone service.

I was on their site yesterday CDawg. I would still be at a loss for internet service - but could probably find something, like a NetZero (but would still like at least DSL speeds (I do not download anything - just surf). Skype is extremely inexpensive - $30 a year!

AT&T at $40 per share? Bah! I'll keep my Whirlpool stock at $113/share.

I don't know how much you would save but I have directv also and I get the internet and phone from my cable company. You don't need to get cable to get the other services.

Do you pay up near $90 for your internet/telephone service as well?

I suppose in considering this, if I can get my home phone down around $25 - which is understandable for the amount I use it, and the internet between $10-$20 a month, I'd be happy. Looking for options.

Wait!

I have it.

LoL, you don't want Skype as your phone service. It uses computer headphones, your voice is a little destorted for listeners and it is quieter. I had it when i was in Czech Republic, and it wasn't hte microphone it was the service. My girlfriend would have trouble hearing me and i sometimes couldn't hear her that well. The sound quality is simply bad.

Besides that, it's your computer ringing not your phone when it calls. Not that cool, it's actually obnoxious.

I say, no go to Skype. If only, just get the service for long distance phone calls.

What I got at home is Optimum Voice. Love it, 30 dollars a month flat rate that's the only fee you pay, as long as you don't make country to country, that costs something i think.

Don't do Skype, Skype's great for international calling, but to talk on the phone to somoene here, i would never use it. I prefer cellphone and homephone any day of the week.

Also with Skype you can't leave your computer when you're talking on the phone!

No-Go man. My recommendation says na, don't take the really cheap route- other options are better
