If the top 4 playoff did not exist this year.

Like it did not exist before 2012.

Then by that system, which was in use for all those years.

Who would be the 1. vs 2. matchup that they were trying to put together?

It sure as heck wouldn't be anybody vs Penn State, or anybody vs Wisconsin.

So,

If you want to leave Ohio State out of the final 4, then I'm saying leave all the Big 10 teams out.

Not sure about this year but last year there was. I believe 2 teams that played had losing records. I know at least one of those teams won their bowl game.

So the reality is there is no real eligibility rule. You are in a Bowl if a committe selects you and sends a offer to play.

Turned on Colorado vs. Utah to check out Liufau (pretty inconsistent) and a couple of Colorado DBs have caught my eye. I'll have to dig in on Chidobe Awuzie (CB) and Tedric Thompson (S)

Chidobe Awuzie is a great prospect. He's the emotional leader for that team and has been for awhile. He's pretty criminally underrated by a lot of folks. But I think I read he grades out well with the metrics. If he could somehow slip to the third round, that should be an instant pick up.

Listening to the radio just now, one guy was convinced Michigan can still get in if Colorado beats Washington and the Big 10 title game is sloppy and not well-played.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

The Big 10 will have 10 teams in bowl games. ACC and SEC are sending 11, I'm not sure what bowl committees will do with Mississippi State. Louisiana Lafayette and South Alabama have to win their last games to be bowl eligible. Big 12 and PAC-12 are sending 6

good stat candy ... a few years ago the big 10 was considered a joke ... well, a couple of great coaches has elevated the entire league IMO. Recruiting is way better, talent is up ... best conference right now

I agree. The Big 10 very well might have been the best conference this year. A good balance of good teams. Welcome back.

I know that many of you think I am a SEC homer, and to a degree that is true, but my beef with the Big 10 the past 10 or so years is it was nearly unwatchable and weak other than OSU. Now Michigan is back, Wisconsin is strong, PSU looks to be back on track, MSU is usually at least a decent team.

It wasn't a case of me simply bashing the Big 10 or trolling some of the board members.

Props!!

I thought the Referee's were not being fair to Ohio State.

They didn't spot the ball correctly which clearly should have pinned the other team on their own 4, off a punt, and they spoted it on the 6!!!

It only worked out that the very next play was an interception for a touchdown by the Buckeye's.

Also there was a touchdown by Michigan followed by clear personal fouls on Michigan players and no flags were thrown.
The Ref's just going to let Michigan players dis regard the rules.

Then, The Michigan coach, blows his stack, and he doesn't get ejected!

I don't know what kind of parallel universe Jim Harbaugh was living in, but What do the Buckeyes HAVE TO DO in order to get a fair playing field.

Barely Won the game.

It should have been over before Michigan scored to send it to double overtime.
And I think it's just STUPID to have to hear what the Michigan Coach had to say, when they got the benefit of the doubt the whole game.

If Colorado wins the Pac12.

You have to put Michigan in the Top 4, right?

3 Top 10 wins.
1 loss on the Road by 3 to #2.

You can't tell me that PSU or WI are better than UM.

If Washington and Clemson blowout their Conference games, then yeah, put them in..

If not? Eh.

J/C...

People complain about the number of bowl games, how losing teams can make a bowl and say their are "no rules"... and then gloss over actual conference champions for the money grabbing playoffs. Odd.

What the hell does winning the ACC and the Pac 12 have to do with making the playoffs? It's honestly hard to consider the ACC, Pac 12 and Big 12 power 5 conferences right now. It's always been hard, but it's especially hard now.

Not sure what you're getting at, but being a conference champion doesn't make you one of the 4 best teams in the country.

in my mind, this year there were two big conferences .. the SEC and Big 10 had quality teams w/depth

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

4 B1G 10 teams in the top 10, and 5 in the top 25, right now.

That's a pretty darn strong conference. wink

as we said earlier somewhere, it's pretty impressive considering where the league was about 3 years ago

What's funny is the Big 12 had 2 top teams for like 3-4 years..

But it wasn't Texas and Oklahoma so they didn't care.

They were showing promos of The Big 10 Championship during yesterday's Brown's game.

Man, what a disappointing match-up.

I am NOT arguing who deserves to be there, because clearly, those teams earned the right according to the format that has been established, but man.........

.........An Ohio State vs that TUN would be such a better match-up. And I bet the folks at Fox are thinking the same damn thing.

I think they'd take WI vs either OSU/UM.

Both were close games early in the season. And would have playoff inplications.

Sorry Penn State. No one cares about you.

What a difference a week is going to make. Surely PSU and WI will be better than ScUM.

First.. The Ohio State vs Michigan loser was OUT! period. Never forget the whole system is set up to put down Ohio, and the B1G conference, because they formed it first, wayyy back to cut out the Rose bowl winner getting the Natl Title.

Later , they voted Florida schools #1 when they looked awful similar to 1 loss mid west schools, ... See 1996, see also the Ohio State vs Kansas matchup that didn't happen when they met the Florida Gators, Urban meyer, and 41-14...
So Never forget the whole system is set up to put down Ohio and the B1G conference.

Now , what a difference a week will make, After, I suspect Penn State beat Wiscky by about 7 td's and after Ohio State beat them , (year 1) in the Big Ten championship game 59-3,

somebody is going to bring up the fact that, hey, (tough luck Bucks!) but the Buckeye's didn't play this week. and they will say..

A Penn State team, that's 11-2 and conf. champ, and beat the Bucks, looks surpisingly just as attractive as an Ohio State team that's 11-1 but won two of those games in overtime, Wisconsin, and Mich. 2 ot,

Now the Big Ten championship game Loser will also be out!

Michigan's ceiling is #5, unless, lets see,.. can't figure a way.

One nice little scenario in my mind is Ohio State vs ?, and Penn State vs Alabama..

Because, that way, after Alabama Beats, trounces, whatever Penn St. and Ohio State in back to back games for the Natl. Title, there will be no doubt, that that one team.. is the Natl Champ.

If! they are strong enough to do it.

Buckeyes! Honestly, whatever, they're good enough, done enough to get in, ya! they might even be the best team in the country, certainly able to be in the top 1.vs 2 matchup the committee was originally designed achieve. but.

on the other hand, Buckeyes, C'mon, they barely hit any deep passes all Year! ya, Year!! and they almost lost 3 in a row, poor showings vs N'Western, and Wisconsin, in wins.

But they did Win! and they are only a 1 loss 11 win Big Ten team.

and scUM! C'mon

What does the committee really think of a 2 loss Big 10 team with no chance to win the conference championship? See Nebraska at 16th.

Is Wisconsin going to roll over and lose bad???

If you DON'T PUT OHIO STATE IN... THEN WHAT MEANING DOES THE OHIO STATE VS MICHIGAN GAME HAVE ???

DANGEROUS PRECEDENTS MAY BE SET, which could apply to the SEC in future years.

Remember it was those Southern schools that wanted this system, in the belief that 2 SEC schools might meet in the Natl Title game.

That was a clear thought process as recently as 2011-2012.

Whatever happens, I believe that hey, somebody has earned the right to go and get trounced 100-nothin, and that shouldn't be taken away, if they earned it.

Back to your quote, Washington is a 1 loss team. you shan't put a 2 loss team in over a 1 loss team, I mean, overall record should be #1 looked to by a long margin over and away from anything else.

I mean if everone had a one game season who would put in one of the 0-1 teams over one of the 1-0 teams?

If there was any way that Mich. gets in. That's just so beyond the pale, what a precedent that a 2 loss, non conference champ, which lost it's rivalry game.

What would that mean for the future? No way, Michigan is out.
I mean you'd might as well put in a mid level.

Western Michigan is undefeated, and only ranked 17th.

So no, overall record isn't "looked at #1"

Beyond that, I have no idea what you just said.

Well, some of those points I made above, would presuppose some detailed memories of several years of the college football National title game.

I think it's important to recognize the selection committee would include some members who've seen football history going back 25 years and more.

I'm aware that even just a recent 10-15 years ago, the Only conference with a conference championship game was the SEC conference.

Yet the history of college football rivalries goes back several decades of teams playing against each other.

Notre Dame vs USC, Texas vs Oklahoma, Alabama vs Auburn, Michigan vs Ohio State, and many others.

So even after watching Espn's 1 hour show on the topic, I still have to say.

you can't put both Mich. and Ohio St. in, or it annuls the game they just played.

I think you can easily keep them both OUT of the top 4, certainly if Wisconsin wins the Big 10 conference game and feel Clemson, Alab, Washington, and ? are more deserving.

But! No way, could (or Should rather) NO way "should" a committee put in a Michigan team that:
lost to Ohio State, and has 2 losses, and isn't even a conf champion or in the conf champ, game.

If I were on that committee, I'd have to say
If you put Michigan in, I'm going to throw all my papers into the air, because it's just nonsense and sets a precedent of nullifying any particular rivalry game.

The Ohio State vs. Michigan LOSER was a take someone out game.
and the Big 10 Conf. championship game is a take someone out game.
Otherwise why even play it!
And Again, if both, / all Big 10 teams are out, I could live with that, (not LIKE It) but at least it could make sense,
I mean, maybe another, deserves it more / is better.

You play it, because it was a scheduled regular season game.

And if after all of the regular season, and conference championship games, you deem that both OSU and Michigan are 2 of the best 4 teams.. then you HAVE to put them BOTH in..

the safest way to get OSU in is for either Washington or Clemson to lose.

However, if they both win, and Penn State beats Wisconsin, the sad reality is that they will most likely be #4, and OSU gets left out.

the committee made a big deal the first year about winning conference title games, its why OSU got in over TCU and Baylor.

if they turn around and keep penn state out after winning the big ten, especially since OSU loss to Penn state, it's gonna be some major problems.

No offense, but the committee has always said that they want the best 4 teams in the playoffs.

Secondly, you can't find hardly anyone who gets paid to analyze such things that is saying Ohio State won't get in.

They're in.

Not quite. Take last year's 1-loss Buckeyes team...

Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliott, Eli Apple, Taylor Decker, Darron Lee, Michael Thomas, Vonn Bell, Adolphus Washington, Braxton Miller, Nick Vannett, Joshua Perry, Cardale Jones... and those were just the players drafted in the 2016 NFL Draft (How did that team lose a game?)

Going by talent, that was the #1 team in the country. They ended up finishing 7th in the final playoff rankings-- behind 1-loss Iowa who lost in the Big Ten championship game and 2-loss Stanford who won the Pac-12. They had no complaints there-- as I recall, they didn't have any wins vs top teams and they lost the one game they could not afford to lose. It happens.

Ohio State will very likely get in this year and about the only scenario that could knock them out are wins by Alabama, Clemson, Washington, and a dominant/blowout win in the Big Ten Championship game. It's unclear what would happen in that case. Thus far, the 8 teams that have made the playoffs have all been 0 and 1 loss Power Five conference champions, so we're kind of in uncharted territory right now.

Clemson and Washington's situation is pretty simple: win and you're in, lose and you're out.

Michigan is an extreme long shot as they have two losses in three weeks, and finished third in the Big Ten East (4th overall?) That's just not going to cut it. I say 'extreme long shot' because again, it is uncharted territory and they do have the three wins against top 10 teams. Just for humor, look at a few scenarios.

Alabama and Ohio State are in above Michigan, no matter what.

Let's say Clemson loses; #23 Virginia Tech does not jump over Michigan.

Let's say Washington loses to #8 Colorado; it's not clear if Colorado would jump over Michigan. Colorado would add the Pac-12 championship and a win vs #4, but they lost at Michigan earlier in the year.

Winner of the Big Ten Championship game - I can't imagine the committee would take a 2 loss team that didn't even play in its conference championship game (and not even due to a tie-breaker) over a 2 loss conference champion from the same conference. This fact alone all but kills Michigan's chances, unless the committee would take 3 (!) Big Ten teams, something I consider even less likely.

There's Oklahoma vs Oklahoma State to consider, a pair of two loss teams that will be playing for a conference championship tomorrow. Oklahoma may still be able to get in with an impressive win and some favorable luck.

I just don't see a spot for Michigan. Look for them to finish in the 5-7 range.
