Link DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR has issued penalties and fines to the No. 24 and No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports teams that compete in the Nextel Cup Series, as a result of rule infractions found this past weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Both cars -- the No. 24 driven by Jeff Gordon and the No. 48 driven by Jimmie Johnson -- were found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); 20-2.1E (parts or components of the car not previously approved by NASCAR that have been installed or modified to enhance aerodynamic performance will not be permitted); and 20-2H (fenders may not be cut or altered except for wheel or tire clearance which must be approved by the Series Director) of the 2007 NASCAR rule book. The violations were found during the initial inspection process last Friday. As a result, Gordon and Johnson have each been penalized 100 driver championship points. Their respective crew chiefs -- Steve Letarte and Chad Knaus -- have each been fined $100,000, suspended for the next six Nextel Cup Series events until Aug. 15 and placed on probation until Dec. 31, 2007. In addition, Rick Hendrick, owner of the No. 24, has been penalized 100 car owner championship points as has Gordon, who is the owner of the No. 48. ________________ My only issue is that NASCAR, is, as usual, not consistent. They not only penalized them the same as Jr (which would be ok by me) they also didn't let them qualify (different than Jr_. Be consistent! Hendrick and DEI BOTH played with the gray areas of the rules of the COT and were caught. Both were penalized the 100 points and 6 race suspensions. But then Jr was able to fix his car and qualify, but the Hendrick teams were not. BTW, just to jab at ya Coach, because it's fun ...sorta shoots your theory about NASCAR favoring Hendrick out of the water though. They got a bit of a stiffer penalty than the Golden Boy (aka Jr).

It's about time they treat Gordon and Johnson the same as everyone else. You may consider it a stiffer penalty, but the truth is that there should have been. This isn't the first time either team was caught, so they should get a stiffer penalty. It's pretty well documented who the golden boy of Nascar is the way they've always protected Gordon.....and it's obvious that the fans know it....that's why ratings have dropped. Of course, with all three golden children with Hendrick next year, the monopoly on favoritism will be complete.

I'm not so sure Babe. To "this point" it appears that way. But I think the jury is still out. Jr's offense was "the first offense with the COT". Gordon and JJ's was "the second offense". Yes,different teams and drivers, yet the second time a COT violation has taken place. IF NASCAR keeps upping the anty every time another violation occurs in this situation, then that would be consistancy. They're trying to get the point across, and every time such a violation occurs,if they make the penalties stiffer no matter who is guilty of the infraction,IMO that creates consistancy. But that's a long shot! Because they've never really been very consistant to this point!

And I agree that they should be treated EQUALLY to all other teams. Where on earth did I ever say that they shouldn't? But they did treat them differently here.
This was, per the on-air talent (I haven't personally looked up the veracity of that statement), the FIRST time Letarte has been penalized for a rules violation. So why should his team's penalty be stiffer than someone who was in the same situation (aka Jr.'s situation)? And Knaus has been caught numerous times before, so why should his penalty be as light as someone who's been caught less?
That is why I question the stiffer penalty to, at the very least, Gordon's team in this instance. It's been since before Letarte's time that that particular team has been in a rules violation situation that got a penalty.
Frankly, I don't give a damn about Johnson and Knaus' penalties and they've been caught numerous times and it's to the point where Knaus should just be banned (close to it at least).
And my only issue with suspending Crew Chiefs. No, they aren't there at the track, but they are still in constant communication with the team. I heard it suggested on the radio (and thought it was a good idea), that a suspended Chief should have to sit in the NASCAR hauler for the duration of the race, so they are unable to communicate with their teams. You know, a TRUE suspension.
BTW, Golden Boy IS Jr.'s nickname. Wonder Kid is Gordon's. That was a nickname given to Jeff by Sr. if I remember my NASCAR lore correctly.
Also, NASCAR rating have dropped steadily since Sr.'s death. Think that might have something to do with it? I do. He was the sports most popular/loved or hated driver. After his death, I know NASCAR lost some fans.

What was Gordon's first offense on the COT? I can't recall.

Gordon's team has been caught before, though it was with a different crew chief. That was what I was trying to say. Golden Boy wasn't a nickname, just using it because Gordon is so protected and given preferential treatment by Nascar the majority of the time.

No,I must not have explained it properly. Let me try again. Driver A has a COT violation, his penalty is,let's say what Jr. got. Then there is another COT violation by driver B. NASCAR increases the penalty, because appearantly, the penalty given to driver A wasn't quite enough to get their point across. Then, let's say another violation occurs a month from now by driver C,they increase the penalty even more, because appearantly, the penalty given to driver B wasn't stiff enough to get their point across and so on. In other words, each time a violation of this manner occurs, they make the penalty stiffer,no matter who the driver or team is untill it finaly ends. I agree with you about Knaus. But I think NASCAR is writing a clean slate and starting at square one in this manner with the COT. (not that I agree with that) But my point is,IF they make the penalty stiffer each and every time such a violation occurs,no matter who the driver is,I would consider that is a consistant formula to try to resolve a reoccuring problem. I hope that came out a little clearer than my first attempt?

It's a little clearer, but I disagree with it. You should not penalize me harder for a rules violation, of say this board, just because I was the 2nd person to make the violation. I know, perhaps not the best example, but just using to illustrate a point.
And Coach~Perhaps a former Chief did get nailed for violations, but are we going to hold Romeo responsible for Butch's actions? Same type of scenario. You're trying to hold the team responsible for something someone else did YEARS ago. Evernham hasn't been with Gordon for quite a long time.

Wasn't it just last year that Gordon was caught with violations concerning the height of his car? I don't remember clearly, but I'm pretty sure he was.

I'm fully aware of what you're saying. And I'm not condoning that policy.
I'm just trying to make some sense out of all of this and throwing out a theory of how they "may be" approaching this problem.

Which is it Coach? Was he caught last year, or was he caught with a former Crew Chief? I honestly don't have the time to look it up right now. I'm working on an project for work. My posts are just me taking short breaks from my Excel files. (trying to keep my eyes going buggy!)

Well, I just thought of the height thing from last year. I think it was Gordon, but may have been Johnson. All those whiners look alike IIRC, Gordon was caught with his roof being too low. I could be wrong, only working off memory, but I'm pretty sure it was last year. The other instances of cheating were before this crew chief, IIRC....at least those that he got caught doing

LOL! I'd guess it was Knaus and Johnson. Just because they've had issues in the past. That's just me guessing though. And, as much as I don't like Bootie Barker, he does say something that is probably true in every garage "If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'" God, it pains me to quote him though. LOL! Saint~Just picture the kittie in this picture as me and who she's aiming for is you:

Well, if it has two Fs, then you have to wait 20 minutes or so in between.
