that's a completely joke.

Freedom of the press means the networks get to decide what news we should receive.

Did you really just type that?

Keep in mind, the guy you are replying to was just fine saying the housing market lost 20-30% since 2006, yet repeatedly refused to cite any links.

So, yeah, I do believe he believes the press should be free to report any old lie they want.

Good point.

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm going to be reading the National Enquirer headlines from now on, they at least got the John Edwards affair and Limbaugh being hooked on OxyContin before anyone else.

Speaking of fake new sites, now look:

Gunman charged after threatening DC restaurant hit by fake news

https://www.yahoo.com/news/gunman-charged-threatening-dc-restaurant-hit-fake-news-030914425.html

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A man who took a rifle into a Washington pizza restaurant on Sunday "to self-investigate" a fake news report that it was operating a child abuse ring has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, police in the U.S. capital said.

Washington's Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement that Edgar Maddison Welch, 28, of Salisbury, North Carolina, was charged after the incident at Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington near the Maryland border on Sunday afternoon.

The suspect entered the restaurant and pointed a gun at a restaurant employee, who fled and notified authorities, police said. The man then discharged the weapon inside the restaurant. There were no injuries.

Two weapons were found inside the restaurant and a third one was recovered from the man's vehicle, police added.

They said the suspect during an interview with investigators "revealed that he came to the establishment to self-investigate 'Pizza Gate' (a fictitious online conspiracy theory)," the police statement said.

Last month, media outlets including the Washington Post and New York Times, reported about death threats against the owner of the restaurant after internet postings said the restaurant was operating a child abuse ring led by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her top campaign aide.

Police said there was no active investigation of child abuse allegations there. The attack on Comet was considered an example of how fake news reports that proliferated during the election year affected people's lives.

A Reuters witness at the restaurant with his 1-year-old child said it was crowded when the gunman entered, with many families dining.

The Reuters witness who was inside Comet at around 3 p.m. ET (2000 GMT) said he was paying his bill when he saw a man entering the restaurant's front door. "It appeared to us he had a long rifle with him. We scattered," he said.

What "fake news" site was it though? It says internet postings, and talks about an "online conspiracy theory". That could be anything from an internet forum, to one of those stupid "moon landing hoax" websites.

4chan and Reddit aren't specific to one party's idiots. InfoWars is just one in a long, long line of moronic conspiracy sites that all kinds of people reference.

Infowars is though wink and yeah, those are just two websites with various subgroups. They belong to the Republican subgroups. Not to mention that the Pizzagate stuff has been all over the 100 or so small fake news websites that you and I have no idea exist.

There are "news" apps I have downloaded that are filled with misleading news titles and/or filled with outright lies or opinions so lacking in fact to be dangerous to the casual user.

I don't depend on one site, no matter who it is, to form my news. I know that CNN and MSNBC and Fox all have their spin but I have found BBC, CSPAN, Christian Science Monitor to be pretty good. RealClearPolitics isn't a bad jumping off point to contrast and compare to other news sites. The Young Turks is pretty good starting point too.

Huffpost is God-awful terrible terrible "news" site and the people that comment on the articles are about as clueless as they come. If I go there, it's only to get a laugh. Huffpo can be better than the Onion at making me laugh.

I find humor and interesting viewpoints at inforwars. I take it for what it's worth.

Truth is unfortunately becoming relative and facts are becoming fiction. I weep for the future cause I know the snowflakes lack common sense and the ability to critically think.

Yep. I've found over the years my website list has extremely dwindled to a few news sites. The Dispatch, New York Times, The Intercept and Politico. Those are the morning stops usually. Sometimes I'll throw the Hill into there. Even then you have to remain skeptical of the news they're telling you. News agencies are a business first, not fact finders.

Today there is only one place in America to get the TRUTH from the News...

Twitter!

Trump speaks directly to the people because all the Press is pushing their own agendas.

It will be his downfall eventually. Most of America isn't paying attention to his moronic tweets. Once the press stops covering his stupidity they'll catch up to fact that he uses it to distract from his weak mind and small ... Ahem... hands.

But what are you going to do? Ban the internet? Because you're going to have a whole lot of trouble trying to do that. And it goes back to my original question. What makes one site "fake" over the other. All of them will have some grain of truth to it and all of them will have been caught in some lie at some point. All of them also have moderate to extreme bias. So who's making the rules as to what's allowed and how far do you go?

Even legitimate news sites spin the news the way they want it spun. Look at CNN, Fox, and MSNBC right now.

CNN leads with pizzagate. Their secdondary stories are "Show waves" spreading acrioss Europe, and Carson's appointment.

MSNBC leads with Ben Carson agreeing to take a job with the Trump administration, a story about Trump risking a China Rift, and Congress fighting for good office space. crazy

Fox leads with a story about Jill Stein's recount. Their secondary stories are Carson, and the Michigan recount.

Even "legitimate" news sites will promote specific stories, while burying or ignoring altogether other stories.

Who needs the National Enquirer when you have Yahoo! You can click on many numerous sensationalized headlines or embellished details to get all the rumors, gossip and sordid "facts". What a lousy website and even lousier search engine they have become. The ONLY thing I like about Yahoo is their sports app for my phone. Everything else about that company has gone totally down a clog-filled toilet.

You do realize yahoo is mainly a third party website, right?

They run articles that were written from news organizations like Reuters, BBC, AP, etc. some of their articles are written by yahoo staff.

It's no different than logging on to MSN.com and reading the stories.

Certainly there is some of that. No question. You've named the three worst.

By and large ABC, NBC and CBS are fairly honest and balanced (except if they report something you disagree with LOL)

24hr news channels need 24hrs of news. They are going to spin the crap out of every story that comes across the wire. It's what they do.

It's only the gullible that believe everything they hear or read. And boy we have a bunch of gullible American's that believe in Trump.

Yes, but they still get to pick the articles they want and then they embellish the title to make it look much more exciting (or slanted) than it really is.

I used to have Yahoo as my homepage but I got rid of it. I got tired of clicking on stories that were "Shocking" that were really pretty stupid.

That's every site out there though does uses click bait headlines. At this point it's damn near unavoidable. Even Vice has done it a few times.

Sure.

I always get baited by an image from an article claiming to have new pics of Jessica Beal on the beach.

This is what happens in a dying industry. They sensationalize everything so you will click on it and give them ad revenue or use up one of your 10 free articles for the month. Journalism is dying right now, tanking like the 76ers or Browns. They are just no match for TV right now, even with smartphones helping them out. The American people are just not in the mood to read like they used to. You should see how much journalists are paid these days. They all have to move to LA or NY and then get paid pennies. It's so ironic.

I hate to say it, but I will. Some industries should just not be ran like businesses. Journalism is one of those industries. In a perfect world, journalists would be focusing on more longform, in-depth reporting all the time. Not just when it would be a good opportunity for a pulitzer prize. Essentially it should be their job to audit the government imo. Of course this is difficult for them as they don't usually have the contacts to do it, but they should try. What the Intercept is doing with Snowden's info is really good. If you want to see a modern example of what I'm talking about.

Yea, or AP posts. Kinda like our local paper these days (The Oregonian), which is primarily AP pulled off the the wires and totally not worth the $ for a hard copy subscription.

However, what I hate about Yahoo is the sensationalized headlines to get folks to open. It's lame and tacky.

Most newpapers pull from the AP as any good journalist gets offered a job in NY/LA (Why?) and national reporters are too much to cover. I haven't been able to re-see this article I read that said, most media jobs are offered in either NY or LA. I haven't found the link ever since I saw it, but it does make sense why journalists don't relate to most of the country. I mean, I doubt most journalists have had a happy hour where you could buy a drink for less than $1. I'd say journalists today are both spoiled and floundering because of where they live.
