Trump chooses former WWE exec McMahon for small business

https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-chooses...--election.html

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is adding former wrestling executive Linda McMahon to his Cabinet as leader of the Small Business Administration.

McMahon and her husband, Vince, founded and built World Wrestling Entertainment Inc., now a publicly traded sports entertainment company. She stepped down as the company's chief executive in 2009 and earlier this year launched a joint venture, Women's Leadership LIVE, which promotes opportunities for women in business and public service.

She also poured $100 million of her fortune into two unsuccessful bids for a U.S. Senate seat in Connecticut in 2010 and 2012 and has become an influential Republican donor — including to the Trump campaign.

"Linda is going to be a phenomenal leader and champion for small businesses and unleash America's entrepreneurial spirit all across the country," Trump said in a statement Wednesday.

Trump said McMahon shares his vision of decreasing "burdensome regulations that are hurting our middle-class workers and small businesses."

"As an entrepreneur myself, I have shared the experiences of our nation's small business owners and will do my best to advocate on their behalf," McMahon, 68, said in a statement. "My husband and I built our business from scratch, building it to a publicly traded global enterprise with more than 800 employees."

The SBA, best known for the small business loans it makes and the disaster aid it provides to companies and entrepreneurs, is also tasked with monitoring government officials' compliances with contract laws. Its budget is generally under $1 billion.

McMahon's two Democratic Senate opponents had kind words for their former foe.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal called her "a person of serious accomplishment and ability" who can help small businesses as long as "she is not hamstrung by the dangerous economic policies espoused by other Trump-nominated Cabinet officials." Meanwhile, Sen. Chris Murphy called McMahon a "talented and experienced businessperson" who helped shepherd WWE from an idea into a successful business.

"Of course, I know firsthand what a fierce fighter Linda McMahon is, and though we haven't always seen eye to eye, I have confidence she'll bring that fight to the SBA on behalf of Connecticut small businesses," he said.

Some national small business advocates said they had little experience with McMahon but hoped she would understand the needs of small companies. Connecticut members of the National Federation of Independent Business had supported McMahon when she ran for Senate, NFIB spokesman Jack Mozloom said.

"Her views with small business aligned very well with our views. If that indicates what kind of SBA administrator she'll be, that'll be good," Mozloom said.

The Small Business Majority said it would have liked a nominee with more direct small business experience, but was optimistic McMahon would support companies and their owners.

"We hope that she recognizes the unique role that the SBA plays in providing much-needed capital and support to America's small businesses and that she is prepared to play a strong role advocating or small business needs throughout the government," said John Arensmeyer, the group's CEO.

The contract laws that the SBA monitors compliance with are aimed at ensuring small businesses get at least 23 percent of federal contracting money that is considered eligible for small businesses. The SBA also sponsors small business training and assistance at hundreds of centers across the country. And its Office of Advocacy's responsibilities include challenging government regulations that pose a burden for small businesses.

House Small Business Committee Chairman Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, called McMahon an excellent choice.

"I look forward to working with her and the new administration to roll back burdensome regulations and increase access to capital for America's 28 million small businesses," he said.

Trump wasn't McMahon's top choice for president. She first backed New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. But McMahon has known Trump for three decades, and contributed $5 million to Trump's family charity, almost all of it in 2007. He participated in WWE events, including a 2007 "Battle of the Billionaires," during which he shaved Vince McMahon's head.

After Trump secured the Republican nomination, McMahon became one of his most generous benefactors. Fundraising records show she gave $6 million to an outside group that aired supportive commercials and attack ads against Democrat Hillary Clinton. She also gave more than $150,000 to the Trump campaign and his Republican Party partners at the end of September.

McMahon told The Associated Press in September that she was confident Trump would be a good president and said the two were on good terms.

"Once you're his friend, he is loyal to the end," she said. "He's an incredibly loyal, loyal friend."

Trump says union head who accused him of lying has 'done a terrible job'

December 7, 2016

https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-says-union-head-accused-him-lying-done-023851959--finance.html

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Donald Trump clashed on Wednesday with a union official who accused the president-elect of lying about the number of jobs saved in a deal to keep air conditioner maker Carrier from moving some jobs from Indiana to Mexico.

Chuck Jones, president of United Steelworkers Local 1999, which represents workers at United Technologies Corp's Carrier plant in Indianapolis, in an interview on CNN criticized Trump for at least the second time in two days over the deal.

Trump, in a Twitter post on Wednesday, offered a sharp reply: "Chuck Jones, who is President of United Steelworkers Local 1999, has done a terrible job representing workers. No wonder companies flee country!"

On Tuesday, Jones told The Washington Post that when Trump spoke at the Carrier factory last week, "He got up there and, for whatever reason, lied his ass off."

Indiana state officials have agreed to give Carrier $7 million in tax breaks to encourage it to keep about 1,100 jobs in the state, although about 300 of the jobs are in the company's headquarters and were not scheduled to go to Mexico.

Only 800 of the positions are union factory jobs, and Carrier still plans to send an estimated 1,300 jobs to Mexico.

Some employees are disappointed, Jones said on CNN on Wednesday. "We had a lot of our members, when the word was coming out of 1,100, they thought that they would have a job," he said.

In more remarks on CNN later on Wednesday, Jones responded to Trump's Twitter post. "That's pretty low-down, low life," he said. "He doesn't like to be challenged, and I challenged him."

Trump, who made tough talk on trade a centerpiece of his election campaign, had vowed to impose hefty tariffs if Carrier did not reverse course on shifting jobs to Mexico.

Trump posted another tweet after Jones' later remarks on CNN. "If United Steelworkers 1999 was any good, they would have kept those jobs in Indiana," Trump wrote.

And you keep ignoring the deal.

At the tune of $700,000 of corp welfare a year for moving jobs offshore. Pretty good deal for Carrier right? And you called my numbers made up and that my math skills lacked...LOL Good one.

I'm glad you feel the deal was so great even though it really isn't. Let's see which company is next in line to get their grubby little hands on Trump's new handouts and his plan for corp welfare while privatizing our SS and taking that money to wage war.

I LOVE the DEAL cause it was a GREAT DEAL FOR AMERICA and the STATE OF INDI and the 1,110 who still have a job our going to have a MERRY CHRISTMAS .. and lets not forget all the others in the community that will benifit from it ...

I'm not IGNORING anything .. kind of ironic coming from someone who only wants to look at this from ONE LEVEL .. what the corp. got out of it and simply not take into account the people who have jobs, the rest of the community, the state and the rest of the country ...

Just cause the union head was left out of the ENTIRE PROCCES and was WHINING about it since 3 or 4 days before it was announced doesn't make it a BAD DEAL ... cause its simply NOT A BAD DEAL ..

I've posted the number ad nauseam .. not going to do it again .. if u don't understand the numbers and allow your hatred of Trump and anything he does to guide all your thought process when it comes to what he does .. there is NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT .....

i said i'd be nice for a week so i won't bring up your math skills .. *L* ..

If u wanna argue about his cabinet picks .. thats opinion .. even if u want to argue that this was wrong on a philosophical level and argue it set a bad precedent .. thats opinion .. you'd be dead wrong on that but its still an opinion ...

regardless if what u say the MATH DICTATES that this was a GREAT DEAL for all of us ... and thats NOT OPINION .. if u would look at the numbers I have pointed out a bunch of times on this thread alone U simply can't refute it ..

Just ONE EXAMPLE ... if each of the 1,100 employees whose jobs were saved pay $650 in state taxes over the course of the year ... that alone makes the 700k a year a BREAK EVEN PROPOSITION ....thats just SIMPLE MATH and can't be REFUTED ...

But u just keep focusing on the GREEDY CORPORATION and what there getting ..

And i agree .. ALOT if not MOST CORPS ARE GREEDY .. i would never argue that .. Cause its SIMPLY NOT TRUE ...

I can agree that some jobs are being saved. IMO It doesn't balance out with the revenue lost though. But we shall see. Thanks for being nice, it's becoming of you, even if it's only for a week. tongue

Trump's Labor Department appointment sends early warning sign to labor

https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-expecte...4--finance.html

So.....corporations are now literally running the government now, instead of just influencing it.

Okie dokie.

It seems to me Indiana had a choice: Do nothing and lose all the jobs, or do something and keep a lot of the jobs.

Let's say the deal only saved 800 jobs. First of all, that's 800 people that won't be suckling on the state, and federal teet for a period of time, so that's good.

Secondly, I know I read somewhere that the avg. pay for the jobs saved was $20 an hour.

To simplify, let's go with 800 jobs. Yearly pay of $40,000. That's a total of $32 million in pay.

Indiana's state income tax is 3.3% (of federal adjusted income). But, since I'm probably a little low on the $40,000 in income per person, let's just go with the 3.3% state rate. http://www.bankrate.com/finance/taxes/state-taxes-indiana.aspx

$32 million X 3.3% = $1,056,000 in state income tax the state is getting. Take the $700,000 out of that, and the state is still netting $356,000 MORE than they are "giving".

When the choices were: Do nothing and lose the tax income entirely, OR: Do something and still come out ahead...........what would you do?

(politely explain if you feel my numbers are off)

Yep for the short term Indiana keeps a token portion of Carrier jobs in Indiana. Just enough for Carrier to collect their corporate welfare checks while the bulk of their mfg is phased out of Indiana and into Mexico. Then when the corp welfare eventually dries up, and it will, Carrier will pull stakes altogether leaving Indiana forever with more laid off employees to collect their welfare and unemployment which won't come as easy as Carriers Corp welfare has.

I draw 2 conclusions from that reply.

1. My numbers are fairly accurate. and
2. You would be in favor of all the jobs leaving now.

And actually, I'll make another statement. A number of years ago, our tiny wittle town had a company relocate to Mexico. Lost about 200 jobs. A couple of years later, that company moved back from Mexico - not here, but to Texas. Why? Because the quality from Mexico was so bad they were losing money.

Even have a good friend that was in charge of the shipping of the equipment to Mexico, knowing that in doing so, he was losing his job.

Hey - lose ALL the jobs today, OR, save many of them, while not losing money.

Take your pick: Which would you do?

So, I like trump pissing off the Chinese. Their responses have been very entertaining.

Let's hope he continues that.

So Trump nominated a guy who has spent his entire life in private industry, first as an attorney, then turning around, saving, and making profitable a large fast food organization.. as this is in his Wiki bio

In 1997, Puzder was also named Executive Vice President and General Counsel for CKE. Also in 1997, CKE purchased Hardee's Food Systems, Inc., which owned the Hardee's quick-service restaurant brand. Hardee's was a distressed brand and CKE was burdened by over $700 million in debt following the acquisition. The company underperformed and its market capitalization dropped to about $200,000.[10] Faced with serious financial and operational issues, CKE's Board of Directors named Puzder as president and CEO of Hardee's Food Systems in June 2000 and named him president and CEO of CKE Restaurants, Inc. in September of that year.[11] Puzder is credited with turning around both the Hardee's brand and CKE, allowing the company to survive, become financially secure and return to growth.[12][13][14][15]

In July 2010, the private equity firm Apollo Global Management took CKE private in a transaction valued at $1 billion. In December 2013, Roark Capital Group purchased CKE and retained CKE's management team including Puzder, who remains as CEO.[16] CKE currently owns or franchises over 3,700 restaurants in the United States and 40[17] foreign countries, generates $1.4 billion in annual revenue and, with its franchisees, employs over 75,000 people in the U.S.[citation needed]

But he's a threat as secretary of labor as this slanted article from Yahoo points out the things he has said that are contrary to what democrats want to do.

President Obama's first secretary of labor was a woman, Hilda Solis, with exactly 0 years in private industry and had never run anything other than political campaigns and held office and worked for non-profits.. but she was qualified to hold so much power over American industry..

I'm sure Hilda Solis is a fine woman but if I had a company, an industry, or an economy that I wanted somebody to have influence over.. Give me the guy who took a company on the verge of bankruptcy and turned it into a $1.4 billion a year company over the career politician any day.

You can slant it however you want, just don't complain about articles doing it.

If you're fine with it, that's cool. I'm sure you're fine with an oil tycoon running the EPA too.

If you don't see the conflict of interest here, then I dunno what to tell you.

Might as well have dick Cheney back. I'm sure you was cool with him being VP too.

And yes, I don't have a problem with obama picking somebody who decided to be a public servant all her life to that position. It kinda makes sense.

Somebody driven by profits to run the labor department doesn't.

I see this is yet another long list of things we will never agree on.

So you think DC's answers are slanted? Huh! Why would you trust putting someone in charge of an office with no experience?
Makes no sense. Would you do your banking with someone at taco bell? No experience but hey looks good and smells great. Yeah let s fill up the Government with people based on looks instead of experience, oh, wait...we already tried that..hows that working out? Anyway I can't understand why you think this is a bad move. Dude has experience and really understands the business, great move IMO.

Why would you put someone in charge of an office with no experience?

Please, by your own statement, enlighten the board as to why Donald trump got elected then.

By your own logic, why defend trump? He has ZERO experience in running a country. Has held no level of office anywhere.

Even Reagan was a governor before running for president.

So I'm glad we agree. Trump has no business being in office because he has no experience.

You said it.

I swear this board is filled with people who have no clue what they actually want.

Obama got slammed repeatedly because he didn't have much experience.......so the correct logic is to elect and support a guy with zero experience.

Then, they praise trump for wanting to drain the swamp, only to start making excuses as to the hires that scream corporate takeover. That's funny because people on this board constantly cry about politicians being bought, and big money in politics, yet turn around and don't say crap about the hires of people who do the BUYING, and are the REASON why there's so much money in politics.

Y'all defended a banker that works for the freaking Rothschild. And yet y'all sit there and honestly think these guys are gonna do what's right for the people?

Donald Trump just put a whole bunch of mini dick Cheney's into cabinet positions, and y'all are perfectly ok with that.

2000-2008, here we come. Conservatives have once again not learned anything from history.

Well, that one's easy. DT (Donald Trump) not Dawg Talkers brownie Has alot of experience running a business, and as you know the Government is alot like a business. Now theres things I'm sure he needs help with and thats why he is putting people in charge of some of those things. Hence, why we need people who know what their doing. Business or Government. He also brings a fresh set of eyes on an already corrupt system. Time to right the wrongs and get back to basics. Look I know your set in your ways and I'm not trying to change that, but for the love of pete, you have to be blind not to see the logic in this.

The government is not a lot like running a business.

Omg, this term is about to be a train wreck.

Sure it is. How do you deal with all the problems? Common Sense. We have gotten away from common sense. Now if you look at it from a profit stand point, then no it's not. But...You learn to deal with people in all kinds of areas and thats what he brings. Who better to lead than a leader? A proven leader no less. You want someone to tell you all you want hear, or you want someone to SHOW you how it's done and then go out and really do it? Take the bulls by the horn and get results.

Ummm that has nothing to do with running government like a business.

Common sense isn't a business or government trait. It's a personality trait.

Again, you don't have to run s business to learn how to deal with people. MLK dealt with people, and he didn't run a business.

And. You don't have to run a business to be a leader. Again, MLK.

And there's plenty of great leaders in own history and around the world who didn't run a business.

Government isn't a business, and has no business being ran like one.

Whether you like it or not, he wouldn't be where he is if he wasn't a leader. Hey I don't care at all for him, I think he is a game show host, but I voted for him because I think bil-hilary is worse. Got to give the man credit for building an empire.

Man, I guess I just aint getting through to you. It all comes down to dealing with people. My point is...His experience in all of these areas help him and us do a better job of running the Gov.

And you won't get through to me.

Sorry, but I'm tired of people complaining about big money in government, yet say nothing about Trump hiring the big money directly INTO government.

It's beyond hypocritical.

In a nutshell ...

The definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again and expecting different results ...

Look at the results/resumes of our govt officials .. FAILURE ...

There's two sides that equation Swish ..

Side 1 - Govt officials elected by we the people to SERVE US ..

Side 2 - Businessmen whose responsibility is to their businesses ...

Side 2 of that equation is building and/or protecting their business (there job) WHILE Side 1 of the equation is SCREWING the people that elected them and they PROMISED TO SERVE (not there job) ...

Seems pretty clear to me ...

Keep telling yourself that. Maybe someday he may be a leader, and maybe never. But child, he's not a proven leader.

Bleed, Swish is right, (boy that tasted funny coming out) about you not getting through to him.

There was a whole lot of people that didn't give Obama a chance, most were visionaries, but none-the-less wrote Obama off right away. Had Hillary won, I would have been in the write her off camp too.

So Swish has the right to write off Trump. I didn't want the guy from the start and didn't think he'd make it through the first round of primary votes but I was wrong. Now after seeing the kind of cabinet he's building I'm becoming impressed. I like his approach so far.

That said, Swish never will give him a chance and that's okay too. History will dictate who was right.

Why would you put someone in charge of an office with no experience?

Please, by your own statement, enlighten the board as to why Donald trump got elected then.

Because there is a difference between being elected and being appointed. You could run for President as soon as you turn 35 and you could win.. without an ounce of experience. And if you did, I would hope you would fill cabinet positions with people who had experience.

As you have said that running the government isn't the same as running a business... dealing with people and being a leader of people who are all rallied around the same cause isn't the same as leading millions and millions of people who can't seem to agree on much.

Obama got slammed repeatedly because he didn't have much experience.......so the correct logic is to elect and support a guy with zero experience.

Obama had zero business experience and very little political experience.. at least Trump has one of those. But Obama won so he got to be President..

I'm sure you're fine with an oil tycoon running the EPA too.

If you don't see the conflict of interest here, then I dunno what to tell you.

He's not an oil tycoon, he's an attorney who has worked with oil companies.. he's been a lawyer and involved in politics his whole life.. these are the kind of people democrats love..

So you don't like people from the private sector that Trump has proposed and you don't like lawyers and people from the public sector.. I think I'm seeing a pattern.

And yes, I don't have a problem with obama picking somebody who decided to be a public servant all her life to that position. It kinda makes sense.

It makes zero sense to have somebody who has never, not even once, started or run a business, had to make a payroll, sustained a business through a recession, etc.. and put them in charge of the labor department.

You can spin that however you want...
