I have not watched much of Garrett at all. Just see that most have him picked as the top player in the draft. So I thought I would watch him against a good team and player in Robinson.
The plays were he was one on one against Robinson he got stood up. I didn't see a guy playing with leverage and power.
I will look at some more on Garrett but in this game I was not impressed.
There is a lot of hype on Garrett. Like he is a generational player.
I don't really know. Have not seen him. Just this one tape. Maybe he is.
The thing about edge rushers is speed, balance, leverage and power. You can not make it with one fast outside move. NFL linemen are really schooled on technique. If they get their hands on you; you have trouble. If you only have a swim outside move; they adjust.
To be great you have to be complete. When you see great rushers like Reggie White you see them dominate on every play. They are unstoppable with one guy.
There is a bunch of time before the draft I am sure Garrett will be discussed to death.
Alabama ran a ton that game and Garrett, if he does have a weak spot, is not a great run defender. He did do a good job if Bama attempted a roll out on his side, but the running game was unstoppable that day.
Also, Alabama did run a lot of quick patterns, play action and rollouts away from Garrett.
You don't select an OLB at #1 overall because he can stop the run, we need a guy that's going to get the quarterback! Lol. The best way to defend the run in today's NFL is to get to the quarterback on passing plays and keep the down and distance to where they gotta pass. Pressure helps to create turnovers which helps to limit rushing attempts against your defense as well. He's 260 pounds, setting the edge shouldn't be a huge obstacle for Garret. I'm interested more in seeing his combine numbers particularly his 40, bench press, and broad jump. He's put a full bag of moves inside and out on full display throughout his collegiate career, this guy could change the face of our defense overnight. Ogbah would benefit as well at DE playing in front of him. Jamie Collins we can move to the inside. Shelton is coming into his own, this defense could really be on the verge of turning the corner. Strip sacks and interceptions baby!
One of the better things about Garrett is that he's not been playing a bunch of non-NFL tackles. Just on his draft breakdown, you can watch him play against a bunch of left tackle prospects. Cam twice, Connor McDermott once, and Laremy Tunsil. You can also find his game against Dan Skipper on Skipper's page. These are all strong tackles, strong enough to play in the NFL, but maybe not fast enough to be LT (McDermott and Skipper are probably not). I think Garrett is certainly the quickest edge prospect we've had in a minute. His first step is immaculate and can really do damage against some tackles. I think he does a good job at converting a lot of that speed into power, if he can get about two solid steps before contact, he'll blow his LT up. But if he doesn't, he probably won't get off the block. He's pretty weak functionally. You'll watch him get blown out holes by running backs and tight ends a lot. There's a lot of games to dissect of his and a lot of talk that can happen. I hope to see some more soon
The play at :16 is Myles Garretts elite speed in a nutshell. He's not just a speed guy either. He plays powerful if needed too. He can be a bigger / stronger version of Dwight Freeny.
Ironically, I think in that clip he whips on Cam Robinson at 3:00

Myles will destroy the combine. He's going to test faster than most corners and safeties.
He certainly can be. But he will have to add a few lbs to not get blown up by tight ends and RB's. It's bad enough that if a tackle gets a hand on him, he really can't break free. But yeah, he certainly has top 5 potential.
He's 260 right now...how much more weight you want him to gain lol?
Enough for him to take on a 230 lb TE. He doesn't show a lot of strength on the tape from his base alone. He does a good job at converting his speed to strength, but it's hardly intrinsic for him.
Garrett just destroyed Cam Robinson on that one play. Man, Robinson had 2 hands full of jersey, and Garrett still went straight to the QB for the sack.
Hmm ... maybe we Take Garrett, then add a guy like Reuben Foster to pair with Kirksey inside ..... and then grab Adoree' Jackson at CB with their 1st 2nd round pick. Add those 3 guys and re-sign Jamie Collins and this defense could get really interesting in a big hurry. (hurry ..... as in adding major speed, and some real ferocity with Foster) The defense could get really interesting, really fast.

I am hoping for Garrett w/the first pick; Adams the S from LSU] w/the Eagles pick; and Sidney Jones [the corner from Wash] w/the first pick in round 2.

That would be fine too ....though I don't think that Jones will last till our 2nd rounder.
I really want to bring pressure from the front 7, both in the run game and in the passing game.
I also think that Horton has proved capable of developing a FS.
I would be perfectly fine with your scenario though.

I'd be esctatic if the draft panned out like that. Jones or King out of Iowa would be awesome.
I can't help but feel if,somehow, we can get Reuben Foster, the defense would be set. Imagine those 4 on defense next year. Immediate impact.
I just have this feeling that both Jones and King will be gone before our 2nd rounder. I would be extremely happy if either guy were to fall to us at 33.
I agree with you about Foster. I love the idea of adding real difference makers at every level of the defense.
Plus, we would have Tennessee's 2nd, and all of the rest of our picks to address offense, and maybe to move around with.
I still could see a way that we trade from Tennessee's pick back into the late 1st. I would not be opposed to adding 4 of the top 33 players in this draft.

I didn't watch the whole video but Robinson far from ate his lunch. Bama was getting gaping holes up the middle, Garret was actually doing a nice job of getting off the line and sealing the corner. His team was getting beat by a far superior team, but it was far from his doing
You may be in the drivers seat but God is holding the map. #GMSTRONG
I had watched some of this game live and remember being disappointed in Garrett. I just watched the film breakdown. Cam owned him all night.
1st 6 minutes
1 penetration into the backfield whee Cam tried to cut block him and missed1 sack when no body even tried to block him. Definitely a missed assignment 1 tackle in the running game 1 play where he turns a sweep to his side back to the inside Several plays when he is blocked by the TE or Rb alone and doesn't break free
2nd 6 minutes
good penetration at 659 but beats the OG not LT 835 forces a run wide but beats the OG to do so 847 good read and react while getting penetration. Unfortunately misses the tackle Should have been a 10 yd loss but the rb gets back to the LOS 1018 really nice play this is the fastest i've seen him play 1140 beats Cam on an inside move to get a TFL
Overall, fairly invisible until after the game was well out of hand Most of his good plays came against #71 The TE Howard blocked him one on one multiple times this game and won them all
My hopes? That OSU noticed #71 as a vulnerability for when they meet up in the championship game
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no
1018 really nice play this is the fastest i've seen him play
On that play @ 10:17 mark, Garrett is unblocked at the LOS as Robinson blocks to his inside...it is supposed to be a trap on Garrett but 88 for Bama whiffs the block allowing Garrett the tackle for loss.
Watching several Garrett's games, many of his tackles for loss have been when teams attempted to trap him. Bama obviously felt that Robinson could handle Garrett one on one...and Saban was right.
I have seen him shed very few blocks On that play his speed is phenomenal If he would play like that all the time...
jest...no doubt the guy has a ton of talent but he chooses when he wants to use that talent. Getting him to buy into the rebuilding program here could be an issue.
If the front office is trying to change the culture, I'm not sure he is the kind of guy you can count on to do that. It's obvious, he decides when he wants put out..I wouldn't want that kind of culture on the team.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Browns have an "astronomical grade" on Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett.
As does everyone else in the draft, but the Browns will likely be in a position to do something about it with the No. 1 overall pick. Garrett is not an ideal fit in Cleveland, but they made it work this season with Emmanuel Ogbah and Carl Nassib. Garrett is a much better prospect than either of those players. The junior has yet to declare for the NFL Draft, but it would be a shock if he decided to return to College Station.
If you look back, I make that point in several posts in various threads. The caveat is, how bad was the ankle injury this year.
1, was it so bad that it was the driving factor behind the lack of all out effort
2, if the ankle injury was that bad, then he shows remarkable drive if it wasn't that bad then this is a problem
3, If the ankle injury is that bad, how well will it heal? Will it become a lingering problem?
So much that we have no way of knowing but that the FO should. Of course the FO should have known about Gilbert and Manziel but that's another story and another FO
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no
